EXPERIENCE THE RISEN CHRIST IN THE BREAKING OF BREAD LUKE 24:28-32 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG

Most of us experience it at least once a year. The blessing of a shared meal at Thanksgiving can be transforming. Often family and friends gather from diverse places with diverse opinions and approaches. Just consider the controversies of “stuffing vs. dressing” or “pumpkin vs. apple pie.” Yet at that table—at that meal—differences fade into the background, if only for a moment. We accept each other in a way that rises above the day-to-day realities we consider so important. The unifying power of a meal has been observed from ancient times. The story of Jesus is punctuated with many transforming meals. The risen Christ can help us find each other and himself at the table.

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES We welcome Jeff Rogers to grace our morning worship with his fabulous trumpet playing. He and Jaime Carini will provide several musical offerings this morning. These arrangements of hymns for trumpet and organ were composed by James Curnow, who originally created them for Philip Smith, Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. The prelude is a setting of “O Worship the King,” a hymn tune that speaks to the variety of attributes that God possesses: glory, power, and love, among others. The postlude on “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” reminds us of the timeless hymn tune and text, both crafted by German reformer Dr. Martin Luther. The communion anthem, “Be Thou My Vision,” is quiet and meditative, reminding us that when we keep God as our “best thought by day or by night,” we experience the peace that only He can give. Jeff joins the Chancel Choir on their anthem, “The Strife is O’er,” arranged by Gordon Young. The style of this piece is inspired by the music of 16th-century composer, Giovanni Palestrina, who lived and worked in Rome. The sectional nature is what musicians call ritornello form, where an instrumental section alternates with a solo section. The solo sections here feature the choir singing a verse of the hymn. This anthem is appropriate to the season as we continue to celebrate the resurrection victory of Christ on this sixth Sunday of Easter.

STAFF NEWS & UPDATES

BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR THE CHURCH!

PUMC’s Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce that after a lengthy discernment process, the duties of Director of Music and Director of Children’s Ministry will be assigned to Jacob TipantasigWolverton in addition to his duties as NewDay Praise Worship Leader. This combination of duties will be full time effective June 1. The committee is enthusiastic about the education, training, and experience that Jacob brings to oversee and organize both the music and children’s ministries. This arrangement of responsibilities in one person raises some logistical questions, but Jacob, Pastor Charlie, and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee have a workable vision for those challenges that are exciting and that will take this ministry well into a vital and growing future.

On Pentecost (May 20 this year) we celebrate the ‘birthday of the church’ when the first believers received the gift of the Holy Spirit and the church was born! (Find the story in Acts 2.) You are invited to a church-wide celebration of this special day on the church calendar. Join PUMC for cake, singing, and gifts on Sunday, May 20, 9:35-9:55 a.m. in the east parking lot to celebrate the church, PUMC, and our life together as a community of faith. (Note 8:45 worship will conclude early to allow everyone to participate, and the party will conclude in time for everyone to make it to 10:00 worship and Sunday school.) Gifts of “Birthday Bags” will be received to be donated to the local food pantry. Please bring a birthday gift bag, cake mix, frosting tub, candles, and one additional item (such as paper plates or napkins), assembled or separately, so neighbors that use the local food pantry will have what they need to celebrate a birthday in their own home.

On Sunday, May 20, make your way to the east parking lot at 9:35 a.m. and find the table of your birthday month. Hosts will You may be in touch with Jacob at welcome you, help you meet others that jwolverton@pumc.org. share your birthday month, and together we will celebrate the birthday of the church!

The PUMC Bible Explorers’ (Grades K-5) Kindness Tree is growing! It now has helping hands! Students traced their hands and wrote ways to help others as ways to show kindness. These have been added to their Kindness Tree in the Main Lobby. In class, Bible Explorers have been learning how Barnabas and Timothy helped Paul spread Jesus’ message of kindness and love, and they are discovering how they can also spread Jesus’ message of kindness and love. You are invited to visit Bible Explorers any Sunday morning, 10:00 a.m, in the south wing of the church.
