C.A.L.M.

PHILIPPIANS 4:4-13 DONNA WILFONG Everyone has it. Everyone experiences it in one way or another, at some point in time. Anxiety. Anxiety seems to be a combination of worry, nervousness, fear, or unease. It’s a feeling that often involves the future. Something may not go well. Anxiety can come to visit around parenting concerns, finances, relationships, employment, extended family, or just about anything else that we do or consider with concern. It’s not comfortable. It’s not fun. Left on its own, anxiety can cripple our ability to think clearly and respond appropriately. Is there anything we can do about it? Does the Bible have anything to say about it? Does God help us with it? There is good news.

CLASSIC WORSHIP NOTES The Prelude today is a piano arrangement of the hymn “Morning Has Broken,” an appropriate opening to worship on the seventh Sunday of Easter. As you listen, recall words from verse three: “Praise with elation, praise every morning God’s re-creation of the new day.” Praise continues to be the subject of our two congregational hymns. Let us welcome the new day with cries of “Jesus Christ Be Praised” as we acknowledge the glory of the risen Christ. The Kinderbells Choir, under the direction of Lynn Blosser, brings their own special offering in the opening anthem. You may recognize some of the tunes that they ring: “Deep and Wide,” “I have the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy,” and “Jesus Loves Me.” Participation in this Choir offers the very youngest children the opportunity to serve through their ministry of music. Philip Wilby’s anthem, “God Be In My Head,” is a prayer asking God to be in our head and understanding, in our eyes and looking, in our mouth as we speak, in our heart and thinking, and at our end in our departing. This quiet, meditative text feels like a lullaby in Wilby’s setting, because he uses a gentle rocking rhythm to convey comfort and peace. Take this prayer as your own as the choir sings it. Finally, the Toccata, by Theodore Dubois, will tickle your ears with its brilliant sounds from the main organ as well as the antiphonal organ at the rear of the sanctuary. Listen for the dancelike interplay between the voices.
