What was the most exciting, most ‘electric,’ most emotional experience you’ve ever had? Maybe you were a teen at your first rock concert and you were moved to tears. Maybe it was when you arrived at a long-dreamed about vacation destination like Disney World or the Grand Canyon and you were so full of anticipation that you couldn’t sit still. Maybe it was your wedding day and all the love and the hope you had for the future bubbled over to make for an unforgettable day.
On that day of Pentecost that we read about in the book Acts, chapter 2, we find that something so exciting, so hopeful, so out of the ordinary was happening that people were having truly fantastic experiences… the air was electric, it sounded like the “rush of a violent wind” and filled the entire house! “Tongues, as of fire” appeared among them. Their language was even changed! “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” and the church was born!
