LOOK IN

1 SAMUEL 3:1-10 REV. CHARLIE WILFONG Some people can concentrate on an important phone call with other loud distractions in the background. Others can focus on the televised big game and seem to be oblivious to family conversation around them. Have you ever been listening so intently to one thing that you miss another? It’s referred to as “selective hearing.” It can help when we’re required to focus on something important. It can hurt when we screen out something helpful. How do you hear God? Are you listening? Is God’s a voice you have “filtered out?” How can we recognize God’s voice in a world full of loud and insistent distractions?

PARKING LOT REPAIR BEGINS SOON The first Transforming for Tomorrow (transforming4tomorrow.org) project will kick-off in just a few days! On August 27, weather permitting, contractors will be on site to repair and resurface the existing parking lots on the east and south sides of the property. These parking areas will be closed August 27-31. This work will not only make the property more attractive and inviting, it will be safer and easier for everyone to navigate, including those among us with limited mobility and all the moms and dads and their little ones who are in and out of this building through the week. What you need to know to navigate the property August 27-31: Access to the property and the church building will be from Raymond Street only. Please enter the property on the Dunn Street Extension (northwest corner of property). Limited hard-surface parking is available on the west side of the church. Park in the grass on the west side at your own risk. Please be cautious entering and exiting the property – there will be twoway traffic on this narrow lane. All church business (with church office, programs, rehearsals, small groups, etc.) enter Door #9 (West Main Lobby Door under the portico). See below for information regarding Weekday Children’s Ministry instructions.

Thanks to everyone who came out on August 19 for a fun afternoon of painting the Transforming for Tomorrow logo on the PUMC parking lot before it is resurfaced. It was a great way to share our enthusiasm about what God is doing here at PUMC with the community!

Monday through Friday of this week Door #9 will be unlocked and staffed 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Evening programs and events (Mon. – Thurs.) will also enter through Door #9, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Weekday Children’s Ministry families will enter and exit through Door #2, per usual. Access to Door #2 will be via foot from the parking on the west side of the building, around the south end of the building, and along the walks to Door #2. * PLEASE NOTE: Families must have their access card/fob to enter the building during this week. No one will be in the church office to ‘ buzz’ families in who forget their access devices. Thank you for your generous support that makes this project possible, and for your patience as this improvement gets underway, so that all of a person’s experience at PUMC — from ease of parking, wayfinding signs, an inviting appearance, security for children, up-to-date restrooms, and more — matches our words of grace and welcome. If you have any questions at all, or require special help accessing the building during this time, please contact the church office at 317.839.2319.

DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDIES BEGIN SOON! PUMC offers many Bible studies, Sunday School classes, and small groups throughout the year. But each fall brings a special opportunity for study and spiritual growth in Disciple Bible Study Classes – a unique, intensive course in reading Scripture and building faith. In each Disciple course, groups of 10-12 people make a nine-month commitment to daily Bible reading and weekly class participation. Each weekly class session includes a short DVD presentation by a biblical scholar, and time for discussion and exploration of scripture and of what it means to live as a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. If you’ve never taken a Disciple course before, you’ll want to begin with Disciple I. Disciple I does not require any previous knowledge of the Bible. But whatever understanding you bring is valued, and Disciple encourages you to grow. If you have already taken Disciple I, there are three other Disciple courses, each focused on a different section of the Bible. Beyond those, Disciple extends to a course on how Jesus Christ is portrayed in the four Gospels (Jesus in the Gospels), and a deep study of Christian doctrines and practices in Christian Believer. Information about Disciple Bible Studyis in the Main Lobby and on pumc.org during the month of August. Stop by the display table or the website to sign up.

CALL FOR COFFEE CANS FOR ANGEL TREE One valuable resource that is needed for PUMC’s Angel Tree Ministry every year is coffee cans. We decorate these cans for use in delivering home-baked Christmas Cookies to the Angel Tree children. Ideally, we would like to have metal coffee cans, but we realize that they are hard to come by. A viable alternative are round 240 and 270 cup plastic coffee cans. (We cannot use square cans or 210 cup plastic coffee cans.) Please drop off clean, empty coffee cans at the Donation Depot near the church office to help with this important part of the Christmas Angel Tree Ministry.
