Farmers plant seeds to grow crops. The yield of a crop is the total amount of the crop grown. Today’s scripture lesson is a parable about different types of yields based on different types of soil and the condition of that soil. The teaching today is about how to get the largest yield of the best crop. Today we also learn why some seeds do not make it to harvest. This lesson is a metaphor about discipleship and what is needed to get our hearts (soil) prepared to gain the largest yield. When one’s heart is prepared and tilled and the weeds are kept out then we have the most growth and gain. When we allow Jesus to be the Master Gardener then we ensure a successful harvest. We also find that Jesus is not only the Gardener but also the Vine and the seed that we can be part of if we only believe. When we become fully mature, Jesus is the Planter and the Seed that yields the increase that we need.
