A LETTER FROM PASTOR CHARLIE 2016 Glory Sightings Senior Pastor Charlie Wilfong delivered the following report to the UMC District Superintendent on the occasion of PUMC’s Annual Charge Conference in November, 2016. The report has been updated to include some information unavailable at the time the original report was prepared. Grace and Peace to you! Ministry with Plainfield UMC over the last year has been an experience of many Glory Sightings; that is, instances in which we have seen God at work for good among us and through us so that Jesus might be more clearly revealed in our life and in our witness. I list the highlights of some of PUMC’s Glory Sightings here in no particular order. • Our $575,000 pipe organ restoration project is fully funded and paid. Glory to God! • On Sunday, October 2, we hosted “Plainfield Pops”, the first public concert of the inaugural year of the Plainfield Concert Series with over 500 in attendance. Utilizing a full choir, full orchestra, and our new pipe organ, we enjoyed an evening of Broadway Show tunes. Glory to God! 1
• Our second Consecration Sunday took place on November 13 with one off-site worship service at Plainfield High School including a meal following worship. Rev. Doug Anderson brought the message as our Guest Leader. Anticipated income for 2017 is 4.47% greater than what was received over the prior 12 months. Glory to God! • 2016 was the highest giving year on record for the Basic Ministry Budget with gifts of $1,015,628.60. Glory to God! • On September 18, we burned the mortgage taken out on the education wing in 1994 with singing, rejoicing, and ice cream. Glory to God! • We purchased adjacent property to our northwest, which holds promise for future expansion. Glory to God! • Having reorganized our worship life beginning in January to host NewDay Praise Worship in the renovated worship annex of Clayton Hall in the middle hour and to add a Classic worship service in the third hour in the sanctuary, we have enjoyed an increase in worship attendance. Total pumc.org
attendance increased 1.36% over 2015 and included one more Sunday over 500 than in 2015. NewDay Praise Worship enjoyed an increase of 24.07% over 2015 and included twice as many Sundays over 100 than in 2015. Glory to God! • Christmas Eve Worship increased 2.25% over 2015 with noteworthy increases in the 4pm Children’s service and 5pm NewDay service--20.39% and 93.88% respectively. Glory to God! • We had staff transitions in the positions of Director of Kids Connection and Facilities Manager. Our staff serves with grace and excellence! Glory to God! • With the help and support of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee, the staff enjoyed an all-day offsite retreat in September. • For our next church-wide study in February, 2017, we are preparing to explore Get their Name by Bob Farr and Kay Kotan. We anticipate over 300 participants will engage this study. Glory to God! • We are thrilled to enjoy relationships with new members. In 2016 we received 27 new members of whom 12 were received on Profession of Faith. Glory to God!

(continued from page 2) • At its September meeting, the Church Council elected an ad hoc team of staff and laity to guide in discovering and clarifying PUMC’s core values. This will help us effectively fulfill our vision of Serving the Children of Plainfield. Glory to God! • With the help of a wonderful worship staff team, I have enjoyed planning and preaching some exciting worship series this year, including: “I Am” for Lent, “Start Your Engines” for the 100th running of the Indy 500, “Key Lessons from the Old Testament”, “Broadway Backstage: show tunes spotlight sacred truths”, and “Not a Silent Night” for Advent. Glory to God! • Other new exciting ministries and missions include: • Nearly 1,200 in worship for 2016 Christmas Eve. • Family Promise homeless ministry. • Youth mission trip
to Minnesota. • Community Sunday with Van Buren Elementary School guests. Glory to God! Powerful ongoing ministries • Fish Fry. • Weekly homeless feeding ministry and Last Saturday Lunch. • TnT (Tuesdays and Thursdays) Van Buren Elementary School enrichment program. • Adult Sunday School. • Confirmation experience and instruction. Glory to God! Again, these are just the highlights that come to mind at this writing. God is moving in exciting ways to grow our discipleship and witness to Christ. Thank you for the opportunity to serve this vibrant and exciting community of faith! Shalom,

A LETTER FROM PASTOR ELIZABETH Thank you for being a friend… “Thank You for Being a Friend” is a song written by Andrew Gold, who recorded it for his third album, All This and Heaven Too. The song reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. It might be best known as the theme for the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls. The lyrics celebrate the value of a true friend… Thank you for being a friend Traveled down the road and back again Your heart is true, you’re a pal and a confidant As I think about the many friends I’ve had in my life, I’m so thankful for all of them. Some have been friends for only a season, walking with me through a particular phase of growing up or parenting or career development. Some stand out in my memory or have a special place in my heart because of an experience we shared or a challenge we tackled together. Those friends who are maybe most dear to me, though, are those who have helped me know Jesus more fully, have encouraged me to grow in faith, and have shared their own faith journey with me in ways that Serving the Children of Plainfield
were real, honest, and personal. Scripture gives us advice about how to be this kind of friend to others…. As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:12-14 (NRSV) Worship in NewDay Praise in February is all about friendships. On Sunday, February 5, invite a friend to join you for Football Sunday. On this national game day in worship we will hear from NFL players about their faith on and off the field. It will be fun, inspiring, and a great way to start your game day activities. On the remaining Sundays of February we will partner worship themes with the small group all-church study for February, Get Their Name, a study that (continued on page 5) 4
(continued from page 5) encourages participants to grow in their faith and invite others to experience the same joy they know in Jesus in ways that are natural, genuine, and easy. In NewDay Praise we seek to create a space and an experience where people who don’t know Jesus can meet him, those who do know Jesus can grow in that relationship,
and everyone can find a warm welcome and a safe place to ask questions and talk about faith. Do church a little differently this Sunday – invite a friend – and join us in NewDay Praise! Blessings,
Game Day in NewDay, February 5 Sunday, February 5, is game day across America. Invite a friend to NewDay Praise Worship to hear from some NFL players about their life with Christ, on and off the field. And help make this a ‘souper’ Sunday for some hungry people. Bring canned soup to donate to the local food pantry.

Hospitality Hints and Habits for Your Small Group Grow your small group welcome and reach in 2017! As you seek to welcome newcomers into your small group, consider these hospitality hints: • Make sure your room has up-todate signage and that your current curriculum and activities have been recently published. (Contact Eiric Shriner at eshriner@ pumc.org with current info.) • Station a friendly class member just outside the classroom door before and just after the start of class to welcome and greet everyone, especially newcomers. • Always have a couple of empty chairs in your classroom. This signals to newcomers that you were expecting them – and keeps the expectation in the group that newcomers are always welcome! • Make a specific welcome to your guests and introduce them to class members. • Wear your name tag. • Make a timely, personal follow-up early in the week to answer questions, offer assistance, and invite your guest to return. Thanks for making your small group a place of welcome and hospitality! If you are looking for a small group to check out or join, find a class listing in the info rack in the south lobby, ask any pastor or staff member, or email Ken Loudenback, at kloudenback@pumc.org.

Bible Explorers Journey through the Bible During the last year in Bible Explorers, lessons took students through the Bible where they learned lessons from the creation to the crucifixion. This year, students will become familiar with the books of the Bible. Students will learn • how each came to be • the importance of each book • major themes, characters and stories Like any book, it’s helpful to know its background, when it was written, what kind of writing it is (fiction or non-fiction, for example), and who wrote it. But it’s especially important to study the Bible as it is the most important book we will ever read. It teaches us how to live our lives, comforts us in times of need, helps us to know who God is, and gives us some insight into our future on earth and with God. Students have completed their “Books of the Bible” folder that they will use on Sunday mornings. This folder will hold all the information we learn about each book, including a card with key verses, main stories and fun facts for each book. Join the Bible Explorers any Sunday at 9:45 a.m. for a small breakfast, meaningful worship, fun games and new friends! Do you want to contribute to a child’s faith journey and make a loving difference for that student? There are many ways to contribute on Sunday morning! From the Infant –Toddler room through Grade 5, there is a place for you! Please contact Director Amanda Norton to explore opportunities, anorton@pumc.org.

Help Support Costa Rica Work Team (2018) PUMC is sending a mission work team to Costa Rica in 2018. You can help them get there with a simple purchase that you may already be making... Many people now send gift cards for a variety of celebratory events-birthdays, anniversaries, etc. When you give these kinds of gifts you can also support the Costa Rica work team. It’s simple… • Purchase a gift card (known for this purpose as scrip) through PUMC. You (or your gift recipient) receive the full face value of the gift card. But through special arrangement with various providers, the Costa Rica mission team receives a percentage of your purchase, sometimes up to 11% of face value. 11
• Give your gift card as a gift, or spend it yourself! • To purchase, contact Lee Ann Overbey at CostaRica2018@ pumc.org. To learn more about this gift card program or the 2018 Costa Rica mission trip, please contact trip organizers Lee Ann, Mike Rohrer, or Steve Brizendine, through the church office. Thanks for letting your gift giving provide an extra gift of support for mission in Costa Rica! You can also provide financial support for this mission trip when you shop at Kroger. Up Next in the PUMC Concert Series The PUMC Concert Series was launched in fall 2016 as a means by which we open our doors to the entire community – an opportunity to experience the magnificence, beauty, power and inspiration of God through music and art. The next event on the PUMC Concert Series is a Lenten Choral Evensong. But, “what is Choral Evensong anyhow, and what should I expect?” you might be asking. Our PUMC Concert Series includes Choral Evensong right in the middle of the season of Lent, a date intentionally selected so you may experience the beauty of God in the heart of Lent. Choral Evensong is a mixture of concert Serving the Children of Plainfield
and worship services – a musical/ spiritual mash-up of sorts. The PUMC Choir, organ and clergy will present a one-hour experience that incorporates beautiful music, congregational hymns, and reflective prayers. It will be reverent, it will be luxurious. It will not be “of this world,” but inspired by a higher power. It will touch all of your senses. Are you curious? Invite others to join you in experiencing something brand new, yet rooted in tradition from our Methodist heritage. The Sunday, March 19, 6:00 p.m. event is free and open to all and is held in the sanctuary. 14

Church Council Report
Nikki Schoultz, Committee Chair, churchcouncil@pumc.org
The Church Council met for its regular monthly meeting on January 11. The Council welcomed new chair Nikki Shoultz, and new members Mike Simek, Christie Wright, and Jennifer Finesilver. Senior Pastor Charlie Wilfong provided a brief orientation for the 2017 Council. In addition to hearing devotions and praying, receiving regular reports from committee chairs and lay leaders, the Council celebrated Glory Sightings, evidences of God’s work for good around us. Additionally, the Council received the following reports and made the following actions: The Church Council celebrated the one year birthday of the ‘new’ NewDay Praise Worship. A few measures that celebrate God at work in this ministry include: • 2016 average worship attendance increased 24% over the 2015 average, jumping from 54 weekly average to 67 weekly average. The number of weeks that attendance topped 100 doubled from the previous year in 2016. • Christmas Eve worship nearly doubled from 2015 to 2016. • There have been few weeks
Serving the Children of Plainfield
when we have not received first-time guests in NewDay Praise this past year. We have on record at least 65 adult first-time guests this year. The Values Clarification Task Force reported that they have met twice with facilitator Christin Nevins. Through prayer, conversation, and discovery activities, the group has identified the following as a preliminary list of core values that PUMC might claim as both operative and aspirational: • Love (kindness, grace) • Respect (welcoming, accepting people where they are) • Authentic Community (relational, local) • Service (responsibility, humility, stewardship) • Authenticity and Integrity • Excellence, innovation, creativity Finance Committee reported that 2016 giving met 2016 expenses at $1,015,628. This is the most that has been given to the PUMC Basic Ministry Budget in any given year. In 2016, 97% of dollars pledged were received. Thank you for your ongoing prayerful support of the ministry and mission of the Church Council and PUMC. 16
Finance Committee Update Bill Edie, Committee Chair, finance@pumc.org
Wow! What an exciting year 2016 was for PUMC! The pipe organ went through a complete renovation fully funded by the congregation. NewDay Praise Worship started in the Worship Annex and just celebrated a one-year birthday. We just completed the budgetary year after our first Consecration Sunday – God and all of you were faithful to promises made that November Sunday in 2015. In 2016 giving to PUMC’s Basic Ministry Budget was $1,015,628. This is the most that has been given to the Basic Ministry Budget in any given year. And we also celebrate that in 2016, 97% of dollars pledged on Consecration Sunday were received. Glory to God! Or as Pastor Charlie would say, “Can I hear a WOOOO HOOOO!” The congregation of PUMC is very generous, not only of its financial recourses but also of its love, time and service. Because God gives, we give. Thank you for your generosity! And 2017 is shaping up to be another exciting year at PUMC. As new chair of the Finance Committee, I welcome any questions you may have about any of the church finances. A copy of the budget is always available at the church office for review. Drop me an email at finance@pumc.org with any question you might have. Thank you for all you do in and through PUMC for the Glory of God! Here’s a big WOOO HOOO to you! God Bless!

Love
by Marge Welker Over the years I have written many articles for February, including one on the ground hog and whether it sees its shadow, one on Valentine’s Day, and one on Presidents’ Day. But this year the theme is love - what a powerful word! It affects an entire family. Love in a family means to give to meet another’s needs. This also includes your neighbors and friends. And God loves you, too, and he wants to be in your life. We can read John 3:16 (NRSV) to see how much God loves us: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to show our love for one another in our daily lives. Be with us and guide us toward your ways. Put your love in our hearts. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

New Adult Study LAND OF CONFLICT
An Arab and Jewish Conversation What began thousands of years ago as a promise to the nation of Israel has become a web of conflict between Arab and Jewish residents of the contested land that borders Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and the Mediterranean Sea. What should followers of Christ think about the conflict in the Middle East? In this 4-part video-based program, you’ll take a journey to the land of the Bible, modern Israel, with host Mart De Haan for conversations with guests Nizar Touma and Avner Boskey, as they discuss the impact this dispute has on their Arab and Jewish communities and as they address tough questions that arise about the role of followers of Christ in this controversy. Please join the group in the Wesley Room (room 21), located in the south education wing on Sundays at 9:45am. See you there! pumc.org

Sunday Morning Small Group Takes the Flag in March Starting Sunday, March 5, the 11:10 adult small group will be studying Take the Flag. This is a series based on seven flags used in auto racing. Together we’ll read the book, watch the DVD segments and discuss ways God signals us in our race of faith. You don’t have to be a fan or know anything about auto racing. The flags are used as metaphors for how God can and does speak with us in everyday life. This series was written by Pastor Rob Fuquay, senior pastor of St. Luke’s UMC in Indianapolis. Join the group to examine ways God has communicated with ordinary people, like each of us, and to consider how God may be talking with us through everyday life. The book is available online in both print and Kindle versions. The 11:10 small group meets in the Koinonia Room. Contact Mike Rohrer through the church office for more information.
