A LETTER FROM PASTOR CHARLIE Get Their Name

G

et Their Name is the title of the church-wide study which we are offering in February. It will also impact Sunday morning worship and messages. I’m excited about it for many reasons. I know the authors of the original book on which the study is based: Bob Farr, Kay Kotan, and Doug Anderson. Yes, that’s the same Doug Anderson who has preached for and helped lead our Consecration Sunday so well for the last two years. I’m also glad that we will be involved in this study because it treats an important yet uncomfortable topic with biblical integrity and practical direction for faithfulness. Evangelism has become an awkward topic. Evangelism has become an awkward topic because we characterize it in an extreme and sometimes argumentative way. When we hear the word, we imagine judgmental and condemning preaching or personal confrontations like, “Do you know Jesus?” In order to avoid these unfaithful expressions, many abandon the biblical practice of evangelism for the work of offering tangible help with no message of Christ. I call this “giving water with no word.” This February, we will have the chance to rediscover 1

and reclaim the faithful, biblical heart of evangelism. Share your story. The core teaching for faithful evangelism is found in the book of Acts. Following Jesus’ resurrection and the gift of the Holy Spirit, which birthed the Christian Church, the apostles were telling about Jesus on a routine basis. The authorities arrested them, scolded them, and instructed then not to teach about Jesus. Their response in Acts 4:20 is key for us: “we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard.” The best faith-sharing is telling what you have seen and heard, what you have experienced of God, and what Christ means to you. It’s not about figuring out what the other person needs to know, do, or believe. Those tasks are for the Holy Spirit. Just share your story of your life in Christ. So, when and with whom should I share my story? We will learn who we are in Christ so that we can be authentic witnesses to Jesus— telling our own experiences of Christ—in the world. That means building new relationships with (continued on page 3) pumc.org

A LETTER FROM PASTOR ELIZABETH Happy New Year!

T

hat’s the greeting often heard this time of year. We’ve quickly moved beyond the Christmas celebration and are anticipating a brand new year. Back in the day we would have taken the old calendar off the kitchen wall and hung a new one. We would have filed our full and used daily planner, having first transferred important birthdays, anniversaries and reminders from the previous year’s planner into the new one. We might even get a jump on our tax planning and set-up new files for the new year’s bills and receipts. In the digital age, these tasks take care of themselves and the new year rolls over without much effort on our part. And yet, a fresh, new year stretches out in front of us. Surely there is some way to mark the movement of time, celebrate what has been, and move into the new year with intention. NewDay Praise began with a new format in a new worship space with a new vision just one year ago. We will mark the movement of time, celebrate what has been, and move into this next year with intention with a celebration on Sunday, January 8. Join us in worship for music and praise - and of course, Serving the Children of Plainfield

a cake – as we thank God for his goodness and presence over the last year. Scripture proclaims the power of God to make things new not just every year, but each and every day… The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 (NRSV) If you need a new start, a new perspective, or a new plan in this New Year, join us in NewDay Praise. We’ll spend worship during the month of January celebrating the power of God to make all things new. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19 (NIV) Every Sunday at 9:50 a.m. people of different backgrounds and generations join together at NewDay Praise Worship to celebrate God’s promise of each new day - of new life itself - lived (continued on page 5) 4

(continued from page 5) with and for God. Live praise music, a relevant message, and genuine hospitality are the heartbeat of this worship experience. Attire is whatever you find to be comfortable. Soft seating, café tables and chairs, and other seating make the space engaging and comfy. Worship includes live music, some singing (if you want to and you are in to that kind of thing), and a message that helps connect the Bible and the story of Jesus to our everyday, real world, lives.

In NewDay Praise we seek to create a space and an experience where people who don’t know Jesus can meet him, those who do know Jesus can grow in that relationship, and everyone can find a warm welcome and a safe place to ask questions and talk about faith. Do church a little differently this Sunday, join us in NewDay Praise! Blessings, Pastor Elizabeth Gilbert

Bible Explorers Dig Into Faith in 2017

P

UMC values children, their families, and faith experiences that are age-appropriate, meaningful and fun. In PUMC’s children’s ministries you’ll find that careful attention has been given to provide children a safe, comfortable, and engaging learning experience. On Sunday mornings, children may be taken directly to their classroom where parents will meet caring teachers, provide helpful information about the children, and register their children for secure pick-up: Infant/Toddler Care is provided during all Sunday morning worship and classes (8:15 a.m. – Noon). Classroom (# 5) is in the hallway south of the sanctuary and main entrance. 3’s – Pre-K meet Sunday mornings 9:50 - 10:45 a.m. in room # 20/22. Children participate in interactive learning through Bible story-telling, games, snacks and crafts. Bible Explorers, Kindergarten – Grade 5 start their Sunday mornings in room # 107 with a small breakfast, high energy worship, games, and Bible lessons. Guided by an adult leader, the children then move to grade level groups for a deeper dive into the lesson and prayer time. Contact PUMC Children’s Director Amanda Norton at anorton@pumc.org or 317.839.2319, ext. 229, to learn more. 8 Serving the Children of Plainfield

Summer Church Camp Scholarship Drive

H

ow important is summer camp? The effects of networking technology, combined with a confusing moral environment and high pressure commercial marketing focused on youth, have made it tougher than ever to grow up Christian in America. United Methodist summer camps provide youth with a safe haven that encourages faith discovery and discipleship growth through a fun and spiritually engaging experience. Plainfield United Methodist Church has a long tradition of encouraging youth and children to participate in United Methodist summer camps. In 2016 PUMC provided scholarship support to Serving the Children of Plainfield

fourteen campers. Continuing to offer such support depends upon the generous contributions of the PUMC community of faith. PUMC scholarships are available to youth and children from 3rd grade through high school. Will you prayerfully consider contributing generously to the PUMC Camp Scholarship Fund? Contributions may be forwarded to the church office and made payable to “Plainfield United Methodist Church.” Please include a note clearly designating the contribution to “Camp Scholarship account # 2151.” It would be most helpful if your contribution reaches PUMC by March 15. Thank you for your generosity! 10

Work Team to Costa Rica in 2018

P

UMC is sending a mission work team to Costa Rica in 2018. You can help them get there with a simple purchase that you may already be making... Many people now send gift cards for a variety of celebratory events--birthdays, anniversaries, etc. When you give these kinds of gifts you can also support the Costa Rica work team. It’s simple: • Purchase a gift card (known for this purpose as scrip) through PUMC. You (or your gift recipient) receive the full face value of the gift card. But through special arrangement with various providers, the Costa Rica mission team receives a percentage of your purchase, sometimes

up to 11% of face value. • Give your gift card as a gift, or spend it yourself! To purchase, contact Lee Ann Overbey at CostaRica2018@gmail.com. To learn more about this gift card program or the 2018 Costa Rica mission trip, please contact trip organizers Lee Ann, Mike Rohrer, or Steve Brizendine, through the church office. The Blessing of Helping by Marge Welker

A

boy named Pete was at school one winter day getting ready to go home. The teacher helped him to get his coat on, and then he started his walk home. As Pete was walking, he saw something red in the snow. He went over to have a closer look and realized that it was a little red robin. He said, “What are you doing here? You are supposed to be flying south.” The bird said, “I have a broken wing and cannot fly!” Pete picked up the bird with his gloved hands and helped him to get warm. Pete nursed the bird back to

health, and soon it was time to let him go. Pete took the bird outside, opened his hands and the bird flew away! Pete turned to his mother and said, It’s a great feeling to know you have helped one of God’s creatures! (Luke 10:35-37) January is the first month of a new year – a good time to plan your future. Forget the last year, only keep the good memories. Prayer from unknown author: When we fear the future, O God, help us remember that all our days are in your hands. 016 has been an exceptional year of ministry and mission at PUMC. Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity in response to God’s leading. As a congregation, we celebrate, among other things this last year: • a completed fundraising campaign for the new pipe organ which is also paid in full • another successful Consecration Sunday that indicates 2017 giving to God through PUMC will be more than $1,050,000. This is about a 4.47% increase in giving over the previous 12 months • a renovation and repurposing of several rooms in the church and Clayton Hall to accommodate an expanded worship ministry Thank you for all you’ve given toward the effective ministry and mission of PUMC in 2016! Glory to God! At the December Church Council meeting, the Council approved a 2017 Basic Ministry Budget

equal to expected giving of $1,052,736. Budget requests were about $140,000 greater than this approved budget. With prayful consideration, adjustments were made to balance the budget with expected giving. A number of the items that were not funded in the 2017 approved budget will likely be presented in 2017 for special giving and funding requests outside of the budget. Thank you for considering these requests as they are made in 2017. As of this writing, 2016 actual giving is anticipated to fall about $44,000 below anticipated giving for the year. Careful spending and delayed building maintenance will allow us to to not overspend giving that has been received. A detailed budget and balance sheet is always available in the church office upon request. God has blessed us in more ways than we know. Glory to God for his love and grace. Thank you for your continued generosity and participation in this ministry. If you have questions, please feel free to drop me a note or email at finance@pumc.org.
