A LETTER FROM PASTOR CHARLIE VBS and our ‘One Thing’ It’s coming! Vacation Bible School (VBS) is right around the corner-June 12-15, 5:00-8:00 p.m. for Kindergarten through Grade 5. It will be a fun time. This year’s theme, The Armor of God Boot Camp, is an invitation to all to join the Lord’s Army. Are you serving Christ (the Commander-in-Chief) or are you a prisoner of war of the enemy? Register your Recruits (students) online at pumc.org. You can also serve as a Drill Sergeant (volunteer) and register online, too. Find the VBS article in this Circuit Rider to learn more.

Join the Lord’s Army! PUMC staff will work hard to create and post a social media blast and other digital outreach to invite, inform, and involve the community at large in this quality, fun event. All of the client families in our Weekday Children’s Ministries will also receive an invitation-- Play ‘N Share, 1

Preschool, Stay ‘N Play, and Kids Connection. I lift up VBS because it’s fun and because we have identified our “One Thing” as “Serving the Children of Plainfield”.

Our “One Thing” is “Serving the Children of Plainfield” “One Thing” is shorthand for the Vision-- the future. And it’s not everything we do, but it is PUMC’s “one specific, concrete, major, missional objective in the community”. In other words, Serving the Children of Plainfield will be the one place and way that we help in the community with such power, focus, excellence, and effectiveness that the love of Jesus comes to be clearly revealed through our help. It will be the way PUMC is known to be the best church for the community. We are growing toward and living into this vision of the future. And this summer’s VBS will be one way we will Serve the pumc.org

Children of Plainfield. Our VBS is designed to be a community event rather than solely for the benefit of PUMC families. There will be much publicity. It will be the kind of event you will want to invite people to attend because of the hospitality, the fun, and the quality of the event itself. VBS would be a great introduction to PUMC for those who have not yet attended. And, as we’ve mentioned before, bringing friends along with you as you attend and volunteer is more effective than issuing an invitation.

Matthew 19:14. Matthew 19:14 has been a part of my daily prayers for a long time now. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” Join the Lord’s Army and help with VBS. Regardless your circumstance, you can pray, make donations in cash or kind, volunteer, bring others, and more. It can be life-changing for everyone involved, not just the children. Go in peace. God with God. And be well. Shalom,

Serving the Children of Plainfield

A LETTER FROM PASTOR ELIZABETH Church Is… The word “church” holds different meanings for different people. Some would finish the sentence, “Church is...” with descriptions of a building or an organization. Some would talk about the services and programs that a congregation provides. Some would talk about worship, or about the feelings they associate with the ‘church.’ And some would nostalgically

recall the faith experiences of their childhood. In NewDay Praise Worship, worshipers were asked to complete the sentence:

Church is….. Responses were thoughtful, insightful, heartwarming, and encouraging and included, among others: • Refreshing • A safe place • Revealing • Family 3

• My battery charger • Inspiration • Where hope, peace, and acceptance wrap around each of us • My anchor • A fun place! When the Bible talks about the ‘church,’ it usually uses the phrase the “body of Christ” suggesting that the church is not just a place, an activity, or a feeling, but is in fact something that is vibrant, alive, growing, moving, and impacting its members and the world at large. In a physical body, each part is important. And so it is in the church, the body of Christ. Without each one present, the church is less than God designed it to be. With each of us, the body has all it needs to be Christ present in the world. In NewDay Praise Worship we celebrate every week the God that brings us together, the love of Jesus present among us, and the presence and power of the Holy Spirit working in and through each person present as we gather, worship, and serve as the body of Christ. pumc.org

We’ve recently added seating in the Worship Annex – including additional soft seating - to accommodate your friends and family. The coffee is good and the people are warm and welcoming. We think they will have a great time here. In NewDay Praise Worship we seek to create a space and an experience where people who don’t know Jesus can meet him, those who do know Jesus can grow in that relationship, and everyone can find a warm welcome and a safe place to ask questions and talk about faith. I hope you’ll join us soon! Blessings,

2017 On Confirmation Sunday we are often reminded of the seeds of faith that have been planted in our young students as they come forward to be Baptized or Confirmed. We sometimes forget that Confirmation is not graduation, and Baptism is rarely if ever our first or last act of faith. It is perhaps easier for us to see children as the ones with a lot to learn, and we expect to see the tangible results of their learning and maturing in the form of good grades and expanding skills. However, seeds of faith are planted in all of us, seeds needing nurture and intended to grow strong and blossom over a lifetime. On Sunday, May 21, Plainfield UMC confirmed eleven young people in their faith and received them as members of Plainfield United Methodist Church. We give God the glory for the seeds of faith he has planted in each of these students and join God in encouraging their growth in the years ahead. 7 pumc.org

Vince Carr served as organist at PUMC in the early 2000’s while a student at Indiana University and went on to receive his Master’s from Yale. To mark the completion of the pipe organ, Vince played music for Classic worship on May 21, 2017, and will begin as full-time music faculty at IU this fall – a tremendous honor for Vince!

My Pet Rock by Marge Welker

When I lived on the farm I was about 10 years old. We had a creek running through our farm and I would go down to the creek with my little bucket and hunt for rocks. I would spend hours walking and looking for special rocks. When my mother saw my bucket of rocks she would just shake her head. With this in mind, my three friends, Charlotte, Margaret, Sally, and I decided to take a vacation. We went to New York, Boston, and Portland, Maine. On the way to New York we stopped to rest near a large creek. I decided to go down the bank and look for rocks. To my surprise there were thousands of colorful and odd shaped rocks. The girls were rushing me to get going, but as I left a particular rock caught my eye. I picked it up and put it in my pocket. I call it my pet rock. Jesus tells this story about a rock… “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.” (Matthew 7:2425 NRSV) On what are you building your ‘house?’ 20

Notes to the Congregation I am filled with joy as I think back to when I first came to PUMC to lead the Wesley Children’s Choir and the Handbell Choir. Sharing music with all ages and personalities has been wonderful. Serving God through music ministry has been a blessing. It was even more special that Ken and I pumc.org

could share this together. I am filled with joy and peace as I look back on these past twentysomething years and anticipate just what God will show us in the coming days and years. Through prayer and waiting for his answer I know it is time for us to finish this chapter in our lives. We will still be part of the PUMC family and be encouragers as much as we can in all the ministries in this special place. With affection, Oma Buckner Retiring Bell Choir Director Thank you John 15:12-17 I love the beauty and simplicity, and at the same, the unfathomable spiritual depth in which the writer of the 4th Gospel speaks. His words speak straight to the heart and spirit. In the 15th chapter of John’s Gospel, Jesus first calls his disciples “friends,” because of their love for each other, as the Master first loved them. It’s important to have a few good friends in life. I am blessed, as I know you are, by enduring relationships. Dear friends at PUMC, it is in the spirit of Christ’s love, I am appreciative that my family and I are blessed by your generous gift of the beautiful woven prayer blanket presented on Easter Sunday for our son Matt.
