JANUARY 7, 2018 NEWDAY PRAISE WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M.

MORE

EPHESIANS 3:14-21 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT January always brings New Year Resolutions in some form or fashion. It’s a season that lends itself to new starts, new goals and objectives, new - or renewed - hopes and dreams for yourself, your family, and your future. Maybe for you this year the objective is to lose weight, or exercise more, or get healthy. Your hope might be to find the perfect mate, the perfect job, or the perfect house. You might be planning to start back to school this year, or start a new hobby, or start being on time more often. Our New Year hopes, dreams and ambitions generally grow out of a desire for more... more health, wealth, satisfaction, or happiness; more time for relaxing, working, being with family, or travel; more energy, more peace, more patience, or more motivation. But in organizing our futures around our own hopes and dreams for more, we might be missing out on the ‘more’ that God has for us. God hopes even greater things for us than we can hope for ourselves. With God, there is more to us, for us, and in us than we can imagine!

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family[b] in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

EPHESIANS 3:14-21 (NRSV)

2018 Key Leadership

DEDICATION OF ELECTED LEADERS Dear friends, you have been called by God and chosen by the people of God for leadership in the church. This ministry is a blessing and a serious responsibility. It recognizes your special gifts and calls you to work among us and for us. In love we thank you for accepting your obligation and challenge you to offer your best to the Lord, to this people, and to our ministry in the world. Live a life in Christ and make him known in your witness and your work. Do you this day acknowledge yourself as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ? Leaders: I do. Will you devote yourself to the service of God in this world? Leaders: I will. Will you so live that you enable this church to be a people of love and peace? Leaders: I will. Will you do all in your power to be responsible to the task for which you have been chosen? Leaders: I will.

Let us pray. Almighty God, pour out your blessings upon these your servants who have been given particular ministries in your church. Grant them grace to give themselves wholeheartedly in your service. Keep before them the example of our Lord, who did not think first of himself, but gave himself for us all. Let them share his ministry and consecration, that they may enter into his joy. Guide them in their work. Reward their faithfulness with the knowledge that through them your purposes are accomplished; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Dear friends, rejoice that God provides laborers for the vineyards. Will you do all you can to assist and encourage them in the responsibilities to which they have been called, giving them your cooperation, your counsel, and your prayers? Congregation: We will.

GRIEFSHARE BEGINS AT PUMC If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, to death you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before. GriefShare begins February 21 at PUMC to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. GriefShare is a thirteen-week, Christ-centered, biblically-based support group experience. A grieving person can join at any time during the thirteen weeks and the group is open to anyone seeking support in their grief. Each session shows a video presentation followed by small group discussion about the video. The video presents experts, ministers and Christian counselors discussing grief and recovery subjects helpful to persons who are grieving. Real people share their stories of what has helped them deal with the pain of losing a family member or friend through death. During the week between meetings, group members complete a Bible study and practical exercises to help them heal from grief. To register for PUMC’s GriefShare group, or to learn more, please make a note on the Connection Card today or contact PUMC’s GriefShare leader, Shannen Shortt, through the church office.
