FEBRUARY 18, 2018 NEWDAY PRAISE WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M.
FRIDAY: OBEDIENCE
JOHN 12:1-11 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT A typical American family vacation, title of a Beatles song, a television series about the making of the Roman Empire, the story of Jesus’ final days prior to the cross... what do all of these have in common? Eight Days. The stories of Jesus in the Bible teach that Jesus begins his final journey to the cross on the Friday before Passover when he enters Bethany, and claims his work finished the following Friday in Jerusalem while dying on the cross. A handful of scriptural snapshots reveal Jesus’ actions and teachings in those eight days prior to his death on the cross. In the weeks leading up to Easter in NewDay Praise Worship, we will examine Jesus’ final days, re-discovering the ancient story and discovering its place in the world today. Friday: Obedience We begin the eight-day journey with Jesus having a meal at the home of friends in Bethany. While there, a woman uses expensive perfume to clean Jesus’ feet. Such an extravagant act creates debate among his disciples about what is an appropriate use of such a resource. Jesus helps us understand that the only appropriate use of any of our resources is in service and obedience to Jesus himself. How are you using what God has given you?
8 DAYS FRIDAY | OBEDIENCE
JOHN 12:1-11 (NRSV)
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, since it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were believing in Jesus.
