MARCH 25, 2018 NEWDAY PRAISE WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M.

FRIDAY: LOVE

LUKE 23:32-43 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT Most journeys we take, we take with a destination in mind.... a warm beach in Florida for spring break; a mountain cabin for summer vacation; the outlet mall for Christmas shopping; the coffee shop to meet a friend. The journey itself is usually secondary to the destination and the event that awaits us there. We tend to plan the journey to make it as short and swift as possible. We are all about getting to where we are going! As we journey with Jesus to the cross, we find his pace of travel is deliberate and that each encounter holds meaning. As we travel with him we discover what it means to be obedient and humble followers of Jesus. We learn of Jesus’ deep humanity and how we can influence others for him. We feast at the table with him and enjoy his friendship, and ultimately, we learn what it is to love. Love gives itself for the benefit of others. Love came in Jesus, that in his sacrifice on the cross, we can have a whole and lasting life. As we walk the final hours of Jesus’ earthly life with him, we witness the depth of his love for his Heavenly Father, for the world - and for us.

Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiahof God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him,[d] “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
