APRIL 15, 2018 NEWDAY PRAISE WORSHIP | 8:45 & 10:00 A.M.

A BOUT WITH DOUBT JOHN 20:19-31 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT

There’s no doubt about it. We all have doubts. I doubt that I’ll get that job... promotion... raise. I doubt that I will ever travel to exotic locations around the world. I doubt that I can ever give up smoking. I doubt she’s telling me the truth. I doubt that my spouse really loves me. I doubt... I doubt... I doubt... What would it take to erase some of your doubts? Would you have to see that first pay stub to believe you really got the raise? How many days without cigarettes would it take to convince you that you had really kicked the habit? Is there anything your friend can do to convince you she’s telling you the truth? After Jesus’ resurrection the disciples had trouble believing that he was alive. One in particular, Thomas, wanted physical proof that Jesus was alive. He wanted to touch the nails’ scars in his hands and put his hand in the wound in Jesus’ side before he would believe. Thomas asked Jesus for what he needed to believe. You can, too. The road to faith often begins at doubt. Let’s travel together and see what we discover.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE JESUS APPEARS TO THE DISCIPLES When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

JESUS AND THOMAS But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”

THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

JOHN 20:19-31 (NRSV)

CLASSIC WORSHIP SERIES: EXPERIENCE THE RISEN CHRIST In PUMC’s church-wide study earlier this year, we considered the questions John Wesley and the earliest “Methodists” used to grow as followers of Jesus—to grow in love for God and neighbor. It is helpful to revisit those questions often. During these weeks following Easter, when we celebrate Jesus coming back alive from the dead and his continued life among us, the first Wesley question is especially helpful. “Is Jesus real to me?” If Jesus is alive from the dead and continues to live, have I experienced him? Do I know him? How can Jesus be real to me? What we find in the Gospel of Luke helps us understand how we can “Experience the Risen Christ”. Invite a friend to join you for this Classic Worship series that begins today, April 15.

LAST SATURDAY LUNCH You are invited on Saturday, April 28, for a nourishing lunch and some great fellowship. Lunch is provided by members of PUMC. This is a free meal to all the community served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Clayton Hall. Please enter through Door 14.

CALL FOR COFFEE CANS FOR ANGEL TREE

PUMC CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS:

VINCE CARR

The next 2018 PUMC Concert Series event is coming up. Former PUMC organist Vince Carr returns to present “Bloomin’ Pipes!” on April 29 at 4:00 p.m. This is his first full-length recital in Indiana since he was appointed as the newest organ professor at Indiana University in 2017. Join us for this engaging and exciting concert featuring Vince… and a few other surprises!

One valuable resource that is needed for PUMC’s Angel Tree Ministry every year is coffee cans. We decorate these cans for use in delivering home-baked Christmas Cookies to the Angel Tree children. Ideally, we would like to have metal coffee cans, but we realize that they are hard to come by. A viable alternative are round 240 and 270 cup plastic coffee cans. (We cannot use square cans or 210 cup plastic coffee cans. Please drop off clean, empty coffee cans at the Donation Depot near the church office to help with this important part of the Christmas Angel Tree Ministry.

Encore Senior Ministries WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Come join the fun! A team from PUMC will once again be going to Henderson Settlement the week of May 20 in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. The volunteers will be working construction, helping in the Thrift Store, Library, greenhouse, adult classrooms, and painting or landscaping. This is a chance for you to experience the joy of giving to others while also being entertained one evening by a group of Appalachian musicians, eating homemade ice cream, meeting new friends, and playing games in the evenings. Or if you prefer, you can just relax and wind down in a comfortable soft chair reading or watching TV. Morning devotions start each day and the week is celebrated on Thursday evening with a review of memorable experiences by volunteers and a meaningful Communion service. If you would like more information or have an interest in participating, please contact Don Sanders at 317.839.7192 or hendersonsettlement@pumc.org. Learn more about the Henderson Settlement at hendersonsettlement.com.

Encore was privileged to have Tamara Jessup, Executive Director of Mental Health America of Hendricks County, speak at our last luncheon. She explained that their organization supports many who would otherwise be forgotten by providing gifts on special occasions and necessities through their recently opened Choice Pantry. While they receive gifts from various organizations at Christmas time, their clients have needs throughout the year. Encore will have a plastic tub available at the Encore Desk in the main lobby to gather your contributions to help meet some of their needs. They are particularly in need of blankets and lap robes; however, there are many items that are listed on the handout that is printed for you to take home with you as a reminder to pick up an item or two to add to the tub. The tub will be available until mid-June. Thank you for your generosity in making this Encore mission successful.

IT’S TIME FOR KINDERBELLS! At PUMC, Mother’s Day is the time for young children to ring bells for worship. If your child is 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 years old, they are eligible to par ticipate. Rehearsals will be in the sanctuary at 6:30 pm on May 2 and May 9. Then on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018, the children will gather in the bell room at 9:40am to rehearse and be guided at the proper time to ring at both New Day Praise and Classic worship at 10:00am. Following their presentation, we will guide your children to the Education wing to join their classes. If you have questions or would like to register your child, contact Lynn Blosser at 317-2930013 or lblosser@pumc.org.
