STAY POSITIVE: ENCOURAGEMENT 2 CORINTHIANS 7:5-7 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT

A few well-chosen words have the power to change our day for the better. When your friend (the one that knows about the big presentation you have to make at work today) texts you just to let you know, “You are so good at what you do! You are going to do great today!” your mood can go from anxious and nervous to confident and calm. Before the last final of the semester, a note from your roommate on your bathroom mirror encouraging you to power through one more test, can give you just the boost you need to make it through. A simple, “You are awesome,” from a colleague, friend or spouse, can lift your spirits and give you just what you need to finish the task at hand. And when we’re at our best, we encourage others when they are down, frightened, unsure or otherwise concerned about something. When we encourage others, we reflect God’s very nature, because not only does God encourage us when we need it, it’s part of God’s character to be an encourager. When our words encourage others, our words are full of the Holy Spirit. When our actions encourage others, we are acting like Jesus. When our giving encourages someone, we’re giving like God gives. Encouragement goes beyond being nice and flattering others. True encouragement helps others grow, heal, and move forward by filling their hearts with God’s courage and hope. Moms are especially good at encouraging others. On this Mother’s Day, we thank God for his spirit of encouragement in our lives, and especially as we experience it through the godly women we know.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE When we arrived in Macedonia, there was no rest for us. We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside. But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus. His presence was a joy, but so was the news he brought of the encouragement he received from you. When he told us how much you long to see me, and how sorry you are for what happened, and how loyal you are to me, I was filled with joy!
