PURSUED

LUKE 15:1-7 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT It never fails - that one particular thing that you are looking for is the one thing that you can’t find. The receipt that you need to make a return at the store seems to have vanished. You can find the receipts for every cup of coffee and every candy bar you’ve purchased for the last six months, but simply can’t find the one receipt you need. Aunt Mary is coming for a visit this weekend and you want to use the serving platter she gave you as a wedding gift 25 years ago. Eventhough you can find two dozen other serving dishes in the back of your cabinet, including three disposable ones left-over from a barbeque last summer, you just can’t find the special one that you are sure you saved for just this occasion. And when what we’ve lost is of real value, such as money or an important document, we set all our other tasks aside to search out what we’ve lost. Our desire to have the things we think we’ve lost will compel us to go after them, to search diligently, and to pursue those things until we find them. And then what a joy it is to be reunited with what we thought we might never see again! It is with that same passion and purpose that God pursues us, risking and giving all to pursue a loving relationship with us.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE The Parable of the Lost Sheep Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

THE HURCH CLASSIC WORSHIP SERIES: BIG “C”HURCH Do you learn by doing or do you learn then do? Do you try a new activity first, then observe to get better—and after you’ve tried it, maybe get some advice from others who are good at it? Or, do you major on studying up before you try it? The practice of the Christian faith has been a little more “learn by doing” from the beginning. Anselm of Canterbury, a champion of the faith in the 11th century, suggests that doctrine and theology don’t lead the way forward, but rather they come from “faith seeking understanding”. In other words, a living faith-relationship with God through Jesus Christ comes first. Then, as effective followers of Jesus—those who live and love like Christ—want to understand God more, they discover some guiding principles (doctrine and theology). The first generation of Jesus-followers practiced their faith, prayed; and they provide some guiding principles for us. We find that record in the Bible in the book of Acts. The early church—Big “C” Church— helps us as we follow the same Jesus. Certainly church life looks different today than it did 2,000 years ago . . . because daily

life is drastically different! What did the early believers experience as they came together in small communities and sought to live as faithful followers of Jesus? Those practices and beliefs unite all the little “c” churches across time and geography. These practices and beliefs are a part of the Big “C” Church (the spiritual body of Christ in all places) and they keep all of our local communities of faith on the same page, so to speak. In the coming weeks we will examine some of the biblical foundations of the Big “C” Church and find through church history, and our own experience, that we really have a lot in common with that early church. PUMC’S SPRING FOOD DRIVE CONTINUES As deliveries are in process, please place bags of food and household supplies in the Donation Depot across from the main office of the church. Checks are also welcome, made out to PUMC and marked for food drive. Thank you for helping to feed many hungry children and adults.

IMAGINE NO MALARIA Each year PUMC emphasizes the need for sleeping nets in many areas of the world. On June 10 and 17 there will be a display and more information about how you can keep families protected from this malaria. Learn more at imaginenomalaria.org.

INDIANA UNITED METHODIST’S SUPPORT MMDC When the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church (annual meeting of UM churches from all across the state) meets in early June in Indianapolis, the Mission & Justice Team will collect materials needed by the UMC Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC) in Illinois. The following items will then be distributed to education mission sites regionally, nationally, and globally. You may make donations of the following items in the PUMC Donation Depot (near the church office, inside door #2) between now and June 7. Thank you for your generosity!

• Blue or black ink pens • Glue sticks • 24 count Crayola crayon packages • Bicycle reflectors

ENCORE TRAVELS TO ZOO If you are 60 or older, you are invited to go with the Encore Senior Ministry group and visit the Indianapolis Zoo. We plan to leave PUMC on Monday, June 11, at 12:30 p.m. This should allow us enough time to arrive at the zoo for the dolphin show which is sure to please everyone! After the show, we will have time to browse thru the zoo before heading to find a place to eat. If you have a suggestion for where we will eat afterwards, please make it known at the time you sign up. Sign-ups will be May 20, 27 and June 3. Cost will be $15 to be paid at the Encore Desk in the main lobby when you sign up to attend. If you have questions, please contact Sue Hylton at 317.839.2946 or shylton@indy. rr.com.
