AUGUST 5, 2018 NEWDAY PRAISE WORSHIP | 10:00 A.M.
REFLECTIONS OF YOUNG DISCIPLES
PHILIPPIANS 2:1-18 REV. BOB PREUSCH, DEREK WRIGHT, KRISTIN WESLEY, AND BEN CRUM
Scripture calls Jesus-followers to be of the same mind and same love.... not that we all agree with each other, but that we all align our hearts, words, and actions with those of Jesus. Regardless of all the ways we are different, we are united in our common life with Jesus. Even the young people among us are called to a life of love and service in Christ’s name. At PUMC youth have opportunity to grow and serve in faith in a number of programs, activities and ministries. Their stories are each unique, but share a common theme - God’s work in their lives through God’s Son Jesus. In NewDay Praise Worship on Sunday, August 5, we will hear a few of these stories and be inspired to align our own hearts, words, and actions with these young disciples and with Jesus.
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without murmuring and arguing, so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world. It is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. But even if I am being poured out as a libation over the sacrifice and the offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you— and in the same way you also must be glad and rejoice with me.

TRANSFORMING FOR TOMORROW PRAYER Please join leadership in praying this prayer each day: Gracious and loving God, we are grateful for your extravagant blessings and benefits in our lives. Thank you for the life, ministry, and witness of this congregation, Plainfield United Methodist Church. Because of the faithfulness of past generations, we have experienced the nurturing embrace of the love and grace of your Son, Jesus. Thank you for the opportunities we have to surrender our time, talents, and treasures to your service so that life among us may be as you intend. For the higher purpose of truly demonstrating your love to all whom we influence, reach, and encounter, we sacrifice our personal preferences. As you have been with your pilgrim people from the beginning, we stand in your promise to be with us through our journey.
JUSTFAITH@PUMC JustFaith@pumc is a new small group that will be meeting on Sunday mornings starting on September 9 at 11:00 am. This group is for adults of all ages. Please join us in the Koinonia Room, the first classroom to the right just south of the main lobby. Email leader Mike Rorher at JustFaith@pumc.org if you have any questions.
Continue to inspire us with the unconditional acceptance of your Grace, dear God. Guard us in all of our work and witness with the transcendent Peace of Christ Guide us as we step forward with the Hope of your Holy Spirit into the fruitful future which you have promised and prepared for us. Grow in each of us the ability and willingness to give generously so that the future you envision for this congregation comes to be fully realized. We pray together in the name of the One whose selfless, unconditional love we hope to clearly reveal in all of these things, your Son, Jesus Christ Amen.
