LET THEM SEE YOU
MATTHEW 5:14-16 REV. ELIZABETH GILBERT Sometimes it’s quite obvious when we look at someone who they are and what they do. The person in a white coat in a medical building is obviously the doctor. The man or woman in the blue uniform at the scene of a car accident is obviously a law enforcement officer. The person wearing the apron behind the counter at your favorite coffee shop is obviously the barista. Sometimes it’s less easy to identify the people around us. When we’re lost it’s hard to know who is the friendly, helpful person in view that we can go to and ask for directions. When servers in the restaurant all wear the same uniform, it can be hard to identify which one has already been at your table. In a crowd of people, it’s nearly impossible to know who is the accountant, the cashier, the writer, the teacher, or the lawyer. And how do people know who you are? And especially who you are as a follower of Jesus? You don’t likely where a sign on your chest or a logo on your hat identifying you as “Christian.” Jesus said people would know his followers by the way they are with others; that people would know his followers by they way they love and the way they shine. Like a light on a stand and a city on a hill, the world knows we belong to Jesus by what is reflected in our words and actions. With the JJ Weeks Band in “Let Them See You,” we pray, “God, let them see you in me.”
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
MATTHEW 5:14-16
PARKING LOT REPAIR BEGINS SOON The first Transforming for Tomorrow (transforming4tomorrow.org) project will kick-off in just a few days! On August 27, weather permitting, contractors will be on site to repair and resurface the existing parking lots on the east and south sides of the property. These parking areas will be closed August 27-31. This work will not only make the property more attractive and inviting, it will be safer and easier for everyone to navigate, including those among us with limited mobility and all the moms and dads and their little ones who are in and out of this building through the week. What you need to know to navigate the property August 27-31: Access to the property and the church building will be from Raymond Street only. Please enter the property on the Dunn Street Extension (northwest corner of property). Limited hard-surface parking is available on the west side of the church. Park in the grass on the west side at your own risk. Please be cautious entering and exiting the property – there will be two way traffic on this narrow lane. All Church Business (with church office, programs, rehearsals, small groups, etc.) enter Door #9 (West Main Lobby Door under the portico). See below for information regarding Weekday Children’s Ministry instructions.
• •
Monday through Friday of this week Door #9 will be unlocked and staffed 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Evening programs and events (Mon. – Thurs.) will also enter through Door #9, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Weekday Children’s Ministry families will enter and exit through Door #2, per usual. Access to Door #2 will be via foot from the parking on the west side of the building, around the south end of the building, and along the walks to Door #2. * PLEASE NOTE: Families must have their access card/fob to enter the building during this week. No one will be in the church office to ‘buzz’ families in who forget their access devices.
PARKING LOT INFO MEETING AND PAINTING PARTY TODAY! Today, Sunday, August 19, you are invited to a Tranforming for Tomorrow (T4T) Parking Lot Information Meeting and Parking Lot Painting Party. At noon, join T4T leadership in the sanctuary to learn more about the upcoming parking lot repair and resurfacing. Get all the details and ask questions. Then at 12:15, join the T4T Communication Team in the east parking lot to help paint a giant Tranforming for Tomorrow logo. This will be a fun time to prep for the project and share the excitement we all have about this project with the community. All ages are welcome. Children can paint, too, with the help of their parents. To join the painting party....
• • •
Wear old clothes (painting is messy) Bring your own small container for paint and paint brushes or small rollers. *Check in at the “Paint Table” in the east parking lot.
Hot dogs, chips, soda and water will be available. And T4T leadership will be present to chat and answer questions.
Thank you for your generous support that makes this project possible, and for your patience as this improvement gets underway, so that all of a person’s experience at PUMC — from ease of parking, wayfinding signs, an inviting appearance, security for children, up-to-date restrooms, and more — matches our words of grace and welcome. If you have any questions at all, or require special help accessing the building during this time, please contact the church office at 317.839.2319.
