The program included chief guest Amrik Virk, Minister of Technology, Innovations and Citizens Services. Virk highlighted some of the innovations in technology and BC’s leadership in this field. Keynote speaker Dr. Andrew Petter, President and Vice Chancellor of Simon Fraser University commended the South Asian Community for being actively engaged in promoting ties between Canada and India. He touched upon the frequent exchange programs between SFU and various organizations in India. For the past few years, the Indo-Canadian community in general and the SFU India Advisory Council in particular have done a commendable job in bringing India and Canada closer to-gether in the academic field. Dr. Petter thanked the community for its on-going support and commitment.

over the next two years for SFU to offer Punjabi classes at its Surrey Campus. Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) had been urging SFU to offer Punjabi at its Surrey Campus for quite some time. In this context, Dr. Petter had promised to offer Punjabi at its Surrey Campus if the community/ PLEA could contribute $10,000 each year for three years. Thus PLEA is very thankful to I-CBA and the generous donors for making this commitment. The community has risen to the occasion. Now the ball is in Dr. Petter and SFU’s court. PLEA is very hopeful that Punjabi classes will get under way at SFU Surrey in Sptemeber, 2016. Once we hear more from SFU, PLEA would launch an information campaign and co-ordinate with SFU to ensure that there are enough students to make these classes viable. Usually, 25 students are needed in order to get a class started. This is a great start. PLEA is looking forward to collaborate with SFU and I-CBA for very successful Punjabi program at the SFU Surrey campus.

In addition to the already great work being done by I-CBA, it made another remarkable contribution to a worthwhile cause at its latest function. I-CBA director Kanwarjit Sandhu disclosed that as a result of its efforts and very generous contributions by prominent businessmen like Arvinder Balwant Sanghera Bubbar and many others, I-CBA has P r e s i d e n t , P u n j a b i L a n g u a g e raised $10,000 for this year and has Education Association committed to raise $10,000 each year

Abbotsford Recognizes National Tourism Week

he City of Abbotsford is joining dozens of communities, cities and regions around British Columbia to recognize National Tourism Week - May 29 to June 4, 2016. BC’s visitor economy has been one of the province’s top performing business sectors over the past two years, expanding faster than the economy at large and outpacing traditional sectors such as agriculture and fishing. In Abbotsford, the number of overnight visitors that stayed in paid accommodations in 2015 increased 12% from 2014, generating revenue that was 19% ahead of the prior year. When you combine hotel room revenue with the money that hotel visitors, as well as visiting friends and family, spent on goods and services like gas, food and retail, the overall Abbotsford visitor economy generated an estimated $30 million dollars of economic activity in 2015. “As we’ve seen throughout the Province, tourism plays an important role in creating a vibrant, well-rounded economy” said Abbotsford Mayor, Henry Braun. “We know that many of the visitors to our community enjoyed a wide array of authentic, healthy experiences that Abbotsford is known for. We look forward to welcoming many more this year, especially during the BC Summer Games here in July.”

Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour added, “British Columbia is experiencing incredible growth in tourism. We saw a 7.9% increase in international tourists as 4.9 million international visitors came to our province in 2015. With a strong U.S. dollar, many British Columbians are also opting to experience B.C.’s world-class tourism through a staycation and exploring BC. It is indeed a time to celebrate Tourism Week in Canada and such an important industry that’s helping B.C. be an economic leader in Canada.”

“The Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC) is excited to be celebrating National Tourism Week with our member partners across this province. While TIABC continues to advocate for the interests of BC’s $14.6 billion industry, we also take the opportunity to celebrate the tremendous success and importance of the visitor economy Mayor Braun will recognize the to our province” said Walt Judas, achievements of local tourism opera- TIABC CEO. tors, employees, Tourism Abbotsford and other stakeholders by taking over Operators and communities around the Tourism Abbotsford twitter account BC are sharing their Tourism Week celebrations on social media using the on Wednesday, June 1st. hashtag #BCTourismMatters.

British Columbia touted as tech hot spot in Japan

remier Christy Clark and B.C. technology companies are in Japan to promote the sector’s world-class capabilities as a leading technology hub and to form new partnerships with Japanese investors and technology companies. As part of Premier Clark’s trade mission to Asia, leading Japanese venture capitalists, investors and technology companies attended a British Columbia government technology investment seminar in Tokyo to hear presentations from four B.C. tech companies: DWave Systems, H+ Technology, Press Reader and Vanedge Capital. “On this mission, we are embarking on a new chapter in our trade relationship with Japan, showing major Japanese investors and technology companies what B.C. has to offer,” said Premier Clark. “Our province is home to world-class innovators and technology companies – combine that with our proximity to Asia, competitive business environment and multicultural society, and there is no limit to what B.C. and Japanese companies can achieve by working together.”

computing and encouraging B.C.Japanese collaboration to propel this industry forward.” British Columbia’s technology companies have secured new deals and partnerships in Japan. For example, Greenlight Innovation, a leading global supplier of battery and fuel-cell testing equipment, confirmed a recent agreement with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology to sell an electrolyser testing unit for advanced research on energy-storage devices. In addition, Japan-based Toray Composites (America), Inc., a subsidiary of Toray Industries, signed memberships at the University of British Columbia’s Composite Research Network (CRN) for future research and collaboration. Toray’s membership will be a major contribution to British Columbia’s aerospace sector, giving other member companies the opportunity to connect and work with the multinational corporation on joint projects.

Another major highlight of Premier Clark’s mission to Japan was participating in the 2016 Canadian-Japanese Scientific and Cultural Exchange meeting on Quantum Computing via Quantum Annealing, hosted by B.C.- Premier Clark also opened the BC Technology Investment Seminar in based D-Wave. PATRICK GIESBRECHT INSTALLED AS THE BC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAIR The first Chair to come from Ab- 2011, followed by the elected posibotsford tion of BC Chamber of Commerce Director in 2013, Patrick Giesbrecht (Abbotsford, BC) Beginning with was appointed as the Chair of the BC the role of President of the Ab- Chamber of Commerce, by Minister botsford Chamber of Commerce in Steve Thomson (Minister of For-

ests, Lands, and Natural Resource Opportunities), at 9:00pm last night. Giesbrecht is the first BC Chamber Chair to come from Abbotsford. “Patrick has been actively involved in the public engagement pro-

cess through the Chamber Network and will bring a depth of experience to his role as BC Chamber Chair,” says Allan Asaph, Executive Director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. Giesbrecht assumed his new duties on May 31st at the BC Chamber of Commerce’s Annual General Meeting in Kelowna. During his address, Giesbrecht was applauded for focusing on a ‘new chamber for a new generation’. He was quoted as saying, “We have had the opportunity to learn from some amazing men and women. I stand here today knowing I stand on the shoulders of giants. I wouldn’t be here taking on this role if I weren’t passionate about what we do or felt a deep purpose in how we serve our members and fulfill our mandate to be the voice of business in BC. However, I recognize that we are at a crossroads. We are witnessing the coming of age of the largest generation ever, which we refer to as the millennials—larger than the baby boomers. Millennials represent the future of our network in BC and around North America. They are entrepreneurial and local businesses, have strong values, crave community and love causes. Seemingly, we are perfect for each other and it’s a great opportunity for us to grow, but we need to speak their language and bridge this generational gap.” Josh Bach, President of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, states, “It’s great to have our Abbotsford Chamber past President at the helm of the BC Chamber. Patrick has been passionate about business issues for many years, and is well connected to help our BC Business community move forward. We look forward to working together with the BC Chamber for the benefit of business.” Patrick is the principal of Giesbrecht and Company, a public and government relations firm serving medium to large organizations throughout BC. Giesbrecht and Company specializes in advocating to municipal and regional governments for market, social housing, and industrial developments in addition to developing and executing public relations campaigns, focused on risk management, crisis communications, public and stakeholder engagement, and media relations.

Artist Mayo’s Meticulous Pilgrim and the Emerge’s Art on Demand open for summer at The Reach

(Abbotsford, BC) – Two new exhibitions opening at The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford will enhance your local summer arts experience. The public is invited to meet artists Tony Mayo and Jenny Hawkinson and Sarah Neilsen, and join the Reach team for viewing and refreshments at the Exhibitions Opening Reception on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 7pm at 32388 Veterans Way.

Meticulous Pilgrim: The Craftsmanship of Tony Mayo demonstrates Mayo’s diligent and dexterous approach to art-making which is informed by a lifetime of travel and collecting. Presenting works that have been created over the past 25 years, this exhibition foregrounds Mayo’s commitment to craftsmanship. The artist refines and finishes his sculptures, paintings and drawings beyond what the human eye can normally see. In some cases, these works take hundreds of hours to complete using small hand tools often crafted by the artist. Aside from his exacting process, Mayo’s work is characterized by his unique choice of

materials. Most of his sculptures are comprised of natural materials collected during his travels. To date, Mayo has traveled to 93 countries across the globe and collected materials that range from precious gems to hippopotamus teeth. This exhibition will appeal to the artistic aficionado and the armchair tourist alike.

Chantal New, who remarks, “As a first time curator, I am very excited to be working with such great artists who are addressing a theme that I explore in my own artistic practice. Both Hawkinson and Nielsen’s work evoke strong emotion and embrace a truly west coast atmosphere.”

Theoretical physicist Derek Harnett receives UFV Research Excellence Award

r. Derek Harnett’s research explores things we can’t see and that might not exist.

ies of physics. Following his Honours BSc in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Victoria, he earned a Master of Applied Mathematics from

And it’s vital. A world-recognized expert in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) sum-rule methods, Harnett’s work isn’t easily understood by the layperson, but it’s heralded within the physics community. His research — fuelled by insatiable curiosity and funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada — paved his way to receiving UFV’s 2016 Research Excellence Award. A member of UFV’s Physics department since 2003 who lives in Chilliwack, Harnett’s nearing the end of a year-long sabbatical spent as a University of Saskatchewan adjunct professor. Working with graduate students on calculations that take months to complete, his commitment to the next generation of physicists is rivaled only by his passion for his work — the practical implementation of which might not be known for hundreds of years.

the University of Waterloo, then a PhD in Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics from the University of Western Ontario.

“Regarding some aspects of QCD, we’re at the rubbing-balloons-on-yourhead stage.” Basically, Harnett investigates how quarks stick together and bundle themselves into composite objects known as hadrons, the most familiar examples being protons and neutrons. However, QCD seems to allow for a richer collection of hadrons than what has actually been observed in experiment. Whether or not these so-called “exotic” hadrons exist is an open question. His research focus over the past few years has been on using QCD to predict properties of these unobserved states in order to provide guidance for future experimental searches. Harnett’s earlier research pioneered the use of Gaussian sum-rules to predict hadron properties, and he discovered an important aspect of instanton effects in scalar gluonium sum-rules, resolving controversies that have surrounded this topic for almost 20 years.

“Early pioneers of electricity research started by wondering why balloons stuck to walls after rubbing them on someone’s head. Then, a couple of hundred years later, that information becomes useful and you’re treating brain cancer with electron beams, or you’re holding a smart phone, or “This is discovery science; it’s really you’re carrying around a tiny flash directed at a fundamental understanddrive that can store nearly ten million ing of the ground floor of strong interbooks,” he explains. action studies,” he says. “Before you can harness the knowledge, you have to acquire the knowledge.” “Theoretical physics is probably one of the most difficult fields to convey knowledge to the general public, as it employs mathematical models and abstract concepts that cannot be easily understood by the masses,” Lee says. “Yet, theoretical physicists include the brainiest of human kind, including Plato, Aristotle, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Bohr, Schrodinger, Dirac, and Hawking, among many other brilliant minds. Among theoretical physicists, there is a unique breed that looks into the realms of the subatomic, i.e., to the core of matter, into ‘particles’ unseen and difficult to prove. This is where Derek Harnett is beginning to make ripples. Derek’s research excellence is not only doing all the metaphysical thinking and analysis of quantum particles, but passing on the knowledge to students. Although hard to comprehend, he uses terms in a way that the average undergrad student can understand.” Though originally interested in engineering when he left his Kitimat home for the University of Victoria, Harnett was quickly drawn to the complex myster-

Hello centre grounds, you are busy! Agrifair is the place to be July 29 to 31, 2016 “It’s not the same Agrifair as we have had the past couple years. So much has changed - if your still saying “ it’s the same every year” you are very wrong!”, stated Vice President Stephanie Nelson. Our centre grounds includes a grassy area, gravel area and pavement area and this year the area has never seen so much action! The grassy area has been turned into a place to sit, relax, have a burger and watch some good old fashion entertainment.

PAGE R4

Grab a burger, a pop or cold spirit, sit under a shaded area and be entertained by Richard’s Racing Pigs & Ducks, next up - the West Coast Lumberjack show. The kids will have a blast! And parents can take a “aw” moment.

can make every family happy. Shooting Star Amusements is NEW to Agrifair and with a new midway comes excitement, they old saying “what do they got that the other midway didn’t?” guess you will have to come see to find out!

There will be plenty to see and do just in this area, and with misting tents to help keep everyone cool - what a great place to chill this will be. But if you need more action, the all new Shooting Star Amusements Midway will fill the gravel and pavement in front of the Cadet building. Plenty of rides to thrill every one of all ages at a price that

As well, the center of the fairgrounds will feature Twisters Gymnastics showing off the amazing sport personalities they host and giving the inexperienced a chance to see what it’s all about! Twisters has partnered with Agrifair for several years to show off their area, so much fun to try new things! M Kish, Assistant Manager stated “we are so

thankful that Twisters opens their doors during the fair, we really feel it is important to support each other and what a better way than to show off what they can do to our guests.” NEW this year the educational ConeZone will be split into two areas. One will include the educational road safety awareness area with Segways. Parents and youth can experience the road safety rules and come away with a new appreciation of the yellow vested traffic personal. Not only that though you can try the “pay as you play” drift-

ing go-kart area. Your own personal “Tokyo drift arena!” But lets not forget the Cadet building - home of wrestling! “Who knew wrestling was so popular? Why fix what ain’t broke”, stated President Ernie Silveri. “For the past six years we have worked with Mike Hammond of ICW & ECCW and every year there is standing room only in the building.” Last year Mike, better known as “Democrat The Authority”, brought midget wrestling to the fair. We can’t wait to see what he will do this year.

Fire Crews Respond to Fire at 33499 Marshall Road ABBOTSFORD, BC: May 27, 2016 – At 11:50am on May 26, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service responded to a report of smoke in a building at 33499 Marshall Road. Upon arrival AFRS teams found smoke coming from a unit in a Townhouse complex. Crews arrived at the Marshall Road address to find dark smoke exiting the townhouse unit. Crews made their way to the basement and found a mattress and surrounding contents on fire. AFRS teams were able to contain the fire to the basement bedroom. Crews then conducted a search of the building looking for any unaccounted for occupants and found two family pets, a dog and a cat, in the building. The dog was in good condition, however, the cat was suffering from severe smoke inhalation. Crews applied oxygen via an animal O2 mask and the cat was revived and doing well.

Total estimates of damage include; smoke damage to the entire unit and water damage to the basement area. Fortunately, very little smoke damage occurred in the two adjacent units. Abbotsford Police attended on scene to assist with traffic and investigation operations. The cause of the fire is unknown, but is not being treated as suspicious. Fire investigators are currently liaising with the BC Electrical Safety Officers to try and determine the exact cause.

Abbotsford, BC – Sun’s out, the flowers are blooming, time to celebrate spring and cultivate the art of living tastefully with your Reach Gallery Museum friends at Tanglebank Gardens! The passionate arts and heritage ladies at The Reach would love nothing better than have you join them at their 4th annual Broads Brunch @Brambles Bistro fundraiser on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11:30am. It’s a joyous occasion where broads gather at beautiful Brambles Bistro (at 29985 Downes Road) to enjoy lively camaraderie over a sumptuous culinary buffet prepared by the skilled bistro chefs, and sip sparkly Mimosas. It’s when Tanglebank’s green thumb queen, Brenda Falk and The Reach’s curator of historical collections cum gardener, Kris Foulds dig their fingers deep into the dirt to show you how to create a thriving Spring Garden Art Container. It’s where prizes include the newly

GOLF: Cascades men’s team in the hunt for Golf Canada national title

T

he University of the Fraser Valley men’s golf team is looking to carry momentum from a fantastic spring season into the Canadian University/College Championship in Parksville, B.C. this week. The tournament, conducted by Golf Canada, brings 20 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams from across the nation to Morningstar Golf Club. The event runs Tuesday through Friday, and the Cascades’ five-man roster for the week is comprised of Connor O’Dell (Maple Ridge, B.C.), Zach Olson (Strathmore, Alta.), Connor McLellan (Chilliwack, B.C.), Kaleb Fisher (Abbotsford) and Nathan Bahnman (Abbotsford). The UFV women’s squad did not qualify this year. The Cascades men come in red-hot, having won all four of their events

this spring – a match play exhibition vs. the MacEwan Griffins, the Olympic College Invitational, the Skagit Valley Cardinal Classic, and the Southwest Oregon Invitational. Their 2015 fall season was highlighted by winning the PacWest conference silver medal and the CCAA national bronze medal. “It’s a really strong field, and a really challenging golf course,” Cascades head coach Chris Bertram said. “But we’ve had some good success thing spring – guys are playing really well right now, and if we play to our abilities, we should be right in it on Friday.” Live scoring will be available through the Golf Canada website, and daily Cascades recaps will be posted at ufvcascades.ca.

While choosing a movie, I think, will I enjoy it : Shraddha

If I would direct a film, I would not act in it : Aamir

Most actors would love to jump in the direction bandwagon while still acting but Aamir Khan says that if he directs a film, he would not act in it he said, "As an actor you tend to trust your director, but in my initial days I have worked with directors where our sensibilities didn't match." "So, I suffered throughout the shooting of the film. So, after that I am very careful with the choice of directors that I make... If I would direct a film, I would not act in it," he added. Aamir will next be seen onscreen in the film 'Dangal' where he plays the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat.

PEOPLE THOUGHT I CAN'T ACT : LISA Model-actress Lisa Haydon says "People did not perceive me as someone who could act and 'Queen' was my opportunity to show them that I am not just a model as I can play a character too," "I believe in something called the big break. ’Aisha' was a small role but 'Queen' is like my first film. People started believing in me after that," she added. Lisa made her acting debut with the 2010 film 'Aisha', but

her portrayal of Paris-based freespirited Bohemian single mom in Vikas Bahl starrer 'Queen' was what won everyone heart. When asked how she looks at the competition in showbiz, Lisa said: "I don't really feel like that. If there is a project that is meant for me, it will come my way. I know nobody can do what I do. I don't believe in competition and there is enough work for everyone."

My best role is yet to come: Randeep Randeep Hooda is at the received end of rave reviews for his rendering of Sarabjit Singh in biopic ‘Sarbjit’, he is well known for doing unconventional roles and executing them with aplomb. But he feels that his best role is yet to come. “Of course, it (playing Sarabjit on screen) has been my most Herculean task. I am glad people are appreciating it. But as an artiste, I would say that my best role is yet to come,” Randeep underwent amazing and excruciating transformation for Sarbjit, he says he enjoys the process of preparing for the film more than executing it. “I like the process of preparation and rehearsal more than executing and watching it. That is the real life experience, rest is just execution,” he said. “My aim in life is not just to see myself on screen, or get

Shraddha Kapoor has successfully delivered back to back hits at box office recently. She credits this success to the choices she made."I have been trying to do different kinds of films that cater to different kinds of audiences. Honestly, I do projects that people are likely to enjoy. Also, while choosing a movie, I think, "Will I go to watch this one in the theatre, and will I enjoy it?" said . "It feels great that most films that I've done have done well at the box office, and have received so much appreciation. I feel blessed to have made the choices I have," she said. When asked about how she handles the idolization and success she said, "The fact that people have been watching my films suggests that I share a special connection with the audience. That's something I cherish the most. I love being loved by them. That bond will always remain special.

awards, or to be featured in magazines. I am not too materialistic either.” “It is the life experience I get by involving myself in somebody else’s point of view, situation and life, and understanding another human being,” he added. As far as being successful is concerned, Randeep said there is no measure to check it. “One never knows if one has truly succeeded. Larger opinion of people has to be taken into consideration. Personally, I feel that I could have done this (role) better or something could be changed,” he added

ACTING GIVES ME A KICK : RADHIKA APTE Radhika Apte is brilliant artist and she believes that its her love for acting that brought her to the film industry and not the fantasy of becoming a big Bollywood star "I did not come to Mumbai because I wanted to be a star. I came to Mumbai because I genuinely love acting and it gives me a kick. That is my only intention," "Bollywood is a business more than an art industry. One has to play the game others play to carve your own path. For me, my journey is not planned. I have been here for a while. I work because I really love working," she said.

Phobia is her first solo film "This is my first solo film. I was fine with the whole concept. But physically it was traumatic at times to shoot in the same closed location for long hours. The toughest part was to film the panic attack sequences. It takes a lot from your body as you have to breath in a certain manner." Her choice of role shave been unconventional but it wasn’t a conscious choice "As an actor our job is to do a lot of different roles. If one is doing same kind of roles throughout their career then they are not an actor anymore," she added. '
