Hey, Where’d My Income Go? Oh yes, the Baby Boomers are at it again, getting ready to retire and open up the jobs and opportunities for the next generation. The “Boomers,” for decades the largest percentage of the population in North American history, have changed every industry and every financial vehicle they have touched. Some for good, and some for bad. We witnessed them changing the dynamics of the automobile industry (yes, you can blame us for the mini-van), you witnessed us change the food industry (yes, blame us for the industrialization of food), you even witnessed us changing real estate demand. Oh ya, and invented a whole new music genre. Now we are changing the demand curve in the financial world. Us baby boomers (generally defined as those born between 1945 and 1963) are aging, looking to slow down or even retire. However, this is occurring at the exact time that interest rates are at record lows, returns on bonds and GIC’s are far below inflation. Many Boomer’s income replacement plans aren’t turning out quite as expected, especially given the dramatic increase in income tax rates on passive investment income. In previous generations, the retirement income plan seemed rather simple, take your savings put it in a nice 7-10% yielding bond and live off the avails of your hard work.

there are so many people with cash to invest (either within or outside of their RRSP’s) the few products that do offer the combination of income and safety get bought up quickly, thus lowering the yields they pay. A vicious circle continues. For example, look at how low the current yield is on government bonds in Canada and the US. Alternative Investments This is why so many baby boomers are turning to real estate ownership or alternative real estate investments to help fill that income role in their portfolio. When done correctly, property, or investments based on property, can provide a hedge against inflation, can provide strong and growing income, potential for leveraging of capital and in some cases capital appreciation. If you are a part of the population who are looking for the income replacement, and stabilizing of portfolio I do encourage you to investigate ownership of well chosen, well investigated well managed property or financial vehicle based on real estate.

I say well-chosen and well managed on purpose as, just like all investment choices, there are good, bad and ugly products out there. City seeking community input on Social Development Infrastructure Study and COVID-19 recovery

T

he City of Abbotsford has partnered with Helpseeker, a leading Canadian social enterprise with expertise in social planning, to tackle persistent and emerging community and social issues. Input is required from community members to help shape the City’s Community Social Development Infrastructure Study and its key policies; particularly during the COVID-19 recovery. A survey will be available until August 15, 2020. Some of the areas of focus will include:

· Taking action on poverty and income inequality While municipalities do not have a mandate for housing or homelessness, the aim of the study is to research local needs and trends, best practices and to build and strengthen the collaborative approach across housing, health, and community service to improve outcomes for individuals and families. This will also ensure specific attention to Indigenous, ethnocultural communities and an intersectional approach to analysis that considers gender, age, and sexual orientation.

New food hub opens opportunities for business in Fraser Valley Producers and processors in Surrey and the Fraser Valley can now develop and grow their processing businesses at the newly opened Plenty & Grace Food Hub & Innovation Centre. “B.C.’s food and beverage processing has grown significantly in the last year, and we are working hard to build on that success,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “This facility creates economic opportunities for farmers, primary producers and food processors in the Fraser Valley. This builds on our government’s work over the last three years to build a truly resilient food system as we restart our economy from COVID-19.” The B.C. government has partnered with Plenty & Grace Co. Ltd. to develop the third regional food hub operating in the province. The Surrey hub joins Commissary Connect in Vancouver and the Sea to Forest Food Hub in Port Alberni in the BC Food Hub Network. The Province committed $750,000 for the development of this new food hub.

The Plenty & Grace Food Hub & Innovation Centre will primarily support the production of plant-based value-added products. The commercial processing facility is certified by the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency and will help local, small- to mediumsized producers and processors sell their goods in local markets and retail outlets, as well as markets outside of British Columbia. Services offered at the facility include co-packing, food business consulting, research, lab analytics, distribution and B.C. ingredient sourcing. The BC Food Hub Network is part of the Province’s Feed BC initiative, increasing the use of B.C. food and bringing more opportunities to all aspects of B.C.’s food system. Feed BC is a priority for the Ministry of Agriculture, which is committed to encouraging more agriculture and seafood production and food and beverage processing in British Columbia.

Abbotsford’s Saniya Kaushal Authors Book “you are not ugly” to Help People Overcome their Insecurities

A

fter collecting many years worth of experiences and spending several months editing and re-framing, Saniya Kaushal has finally revealed her book, “you are not ugly.” This poetry book features over 150 poems around the themes of bullying, name calling, racism, mental health, judgements, and self-esteem. The 19-year-old recalls having a “clouded image” of herself growing up as she was a victim of name calling. She dedicates this book to anyone who has ever questioned their self-worth.

“Everyone has insecurities,” says Kaushal. The purpose of the book is to help people who have endured bullying, name-calling, racism, and painful judgements, to overcome and build their self-esteem. She wants to encourage people to be kinder to themselves and to others. For Saniya, her biggest support system was her family; they are who she says have always helped “build her [me] up,” Through this book, she sees an opportunity to help build others up. The book is divided into three sections;

feel, listen, and overcome. Each section covers the emotions of someone on the path to recovery, whilst guiding and facilitating their journey. “Overcoming is the happy ending” she says. The book’s cover is also designed and illustrated by Kaushal. The front cover photo is a hand-drawn shattered mirror symbolizing broken confidence and self-esteem. The back-cover photo is a bottle of glue, which symbolizes the recovery of confidence and self-esteem. Available as a paperback and e-book worldwide, the book has sold over 100 copies in a very short amount of time. As a university student, now headed to Ireland for medical school, Saniya hopes that she can continue to write to empower people.

Turn kids’ passion for video games into a learning experience

(NC) It can feel like every time we look up, there’s a new video or computer game taking our children’s social circles by storm. While gaming for the fun of it in moderation is okay, there are also ways to mix in engaging STEM learning opportunities by leaning into what they love, rather than restricting it.

Encourage the use of educational games. This may sound like a hard sell, but there are some really fun educational games out there. Shangar Kaur Phulka

It is with great sadness that we would like to announce the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Sardarni Shangar Kaur Phulka. Bibi Ji passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 18 2020 at the age of 88. She was in the comfort of her home and surrounded by her family members when she took her final breaths. Bibi Ji was the wife of the Late Sardar Gurmit Singh Phulka. Sardar Gurmit Singh Phulka was a member of the Indian Army serving proudly and with great honor for 20+ years. He was also a well-known in the local villages as an extraordinarily strong man and excellent kabaddi player. After Gurmit Singh's unfortunate passing in 1972, Bibi Ji raised her 4 kids on her own as a single mother. In 1983, Bibi Ji immigrated to Canada and ever since then she has been living in Abbotsford, British Columbia with her family. Despite the struggles she faced as a young widow, Bibi Ji was known to have a very generous heart and was always finding ways to serve her community. She took great care in instilling strong values that both she and Gurmit Singh held in her children. Those same values have now carried on throughout generations to become their legacy. Bibi Ji is survived by her 4 children: Amarjit Singh Phulka, Harjit Singh Phulka, Kamaljit Kaur Khakh and Simarjit Kaur Khakh. She also has 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. The Phulka family is well renowned in not only Abbotsford, but across Canada for their success in the nursery business and amateur wrestling accomplishments. Everything that this family has accomplished has been due to the love and support Bibi Shangar Kaur Phulka bestowed on them. She has been the catalyst for not only her children's success, but her grandchildren's as well. It's important to sometimes not do anything: Radhika Apte Bollywood actress Radhika Apte feels "it's important to sometimes not do anything and take a break"."There is so much going on in the world, I am just happy staying put and not thinking of the future because there is much uncertainty out there. I am just taking each day at as it comes," Radhika said. The "Andhadhun" actress shares she is spending most of her time during the lockdown "doing nothing. But eating well, sleeping a lot, exercising, walking and watching and reading. The only thing I have missed is seeing my mum, my family." The actress, who confirmed she hasn't

I am ok with any platform as vehicle resumed working, recently launched of my creative expression : Bhumi

a new watch The Iconic Link Lumine from Daniel Wellington. Radhika has been associated with the brand as its ambassador for three years now.Speaking about her personal style, Radhika shares: "I love its simplicity and elegance... I am somebody who loves minimalism. I like to keep it very clean and simple."Asked if she swears by brands, the actress replied: "I don't really swear by brands as such. Like, I was a brand person earlier; actually my work made me more aware of brands, and designs and fashion. Also, certain important things like skincare and haircare, I have tried and tested so many things and have personally taken interest in so many products of different brands."

There's no denying star kids get more opportunities : Avinash Tiwary Avinash Tiwary made an impressive debut in 2018 with the romantic drama, Laila Majnu and was also acclaimed for his performance in Bulbbul that recently streamed on Netflix. Tiwary revealed how star kids are given more opportunities and his opinion on nepotism. However, he first talked about the box-office game that happens in Bollywood and said, "If I?make money at the box office, I have liquid money in my hand. People will say this guy has gone and earned money for the industry. They will definitely respond to you, and do things for you. When you don't make money, why would they want to look at you?"The actor

also reasoned why there's no merit in the nepotism debate that has been going on for long. He said, "It's very simple. This industry provides a livelihood to so many people, and 95 percent are outsiders. Then what is the industry supposed to do? There is no merit to this debate. As a matter of fact, there;s a privilege that insiders will have. If I'm an insider, I'll make use of my privilege, and why not? If I'm lucky for someone, that can be a privilege too. You can't be complaining or cribbing about privileges."

Gender has nothing to do with household chores : Twinkle Khanna

Why should women be expected to do all household chores? asks Twinkle Khanna said the actress-turned-author emphasised that household work should be shared between family members and noted how her husband, actor Akshay Kumar, has taken charge of kitchen duties during the lockdown. "Men and women should share responsibilities. I feel responsibilities should not be

shared according to gender. They should be shared according to skill sets. If you put someone like me in kitchen, I would be miserable. I find cooking stressful, and it is a genuine problem," said Twinkle. "But my husband and son cook. They enjoy cooking. They put on some music and come up with fabulous dishes. I am the one who is awful at cooking. I like to organise things, I order groceries, wash utensils. Cooking is not my cup of tea. Every household should divide up chores according to people's skill sets. Gender has nothing to do with it," she pointed out.

Bhumi Pednekar's upcoming film "Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitaare" is heading for a digital release. The actress welcomes the decision and says she is okay with any platform being the vehicle of her creative expression. "As an artist, I only look to entertain the audience every time I am on the screen and I am okay with any platform becoming the vehicle of my creative expression. In this day and age, producers will do what is needed and we must all support each other's decisions," Bhumi said. She said that she feels her upcoming film will reach out to a much larger audience with the decision to release it on an OTT platform.Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, "Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare" also stars Konkona Sen Sharma. Bhumi is a huge fan of Konkona's brilliance and Alankrita's sensitivity." 'Dolly Kitty…' is a very special film. Konkona, as we know, is a phenomenal person and actor, and Alankrita (Srivastava) is a very special director. (Producers) Balaji (Motion Pictures) as an institution has always supported content that has broken barriers. A very big reason why I am this fond of Ekta (Kapoor). So, for me, being a part of this film was a super enriching experience as an actor," she said.

People have adapted to the new normal : Ashna Kishore

"Happu Ki Ultan Paltan" actress Ashna Kishore has resumed shooting for the comedy show with necessary precautions and safety measures. She feels that the COVID-19 scare is still there but people have adapted to the new normal."I have started working and others have resumed work too. So, I think they are taking proper precautions, and then they are stepping outside their houses. But just in case people are going out just for the sake of fun, then I think that's bad because you never know where you can get the infection from. Normal life has been twisted a little, so if you want to enjoy this new normal, please take all precautions," she said.Since the news of the outbreak surfaced, it has been advised to maintain social-distancing. The actress feels that people who are not following it are not just putting themselves at risk, but their families

too."I have seen a lot of people not following social-distancing, which is neither good for them nor for their family. I feel it is very dangerous because if someone gets infected, he or she will put others at risk too. Unless and until all of us follow the precautions, we are just increasing the risk of infection. It's better to do good things and influence others," she said.Ashna also feels that we need to learn to live with Covid-19 now and should maintain a hygienic life to avoid any risk of infection. She said: "I think people should live a hygienic life, and it is a must especially these days. We should wash our hands frequently and should always take a bath whenever we come back from somewhere. And if you are stepping out, you should always carry a mask, gloves and if not gloves then carry a sanitiser."

You can have a clearer idea of the results or success that is possible with something you could have started out with 2 years ago. Anything that has gone through hold ups since late May can now move forward to early August. If you feel there are obligations that need to be dropped now is the time to take definite action.

There could be some frustration when it comes to money matters, especially if a past situation wasn’t properly dealt with. The need to communicate or do a lot of running around can step up from now to early August. Anything that has been held up or has not been clear can move forward. Avoid taking on too much though.

Attempting to enjoy yourself socially could be disrupted by the expectations of somebody else or restricted because of obligations connected to the needs of somebody else. A sense of being able to move forward when it comes to finances can result in less of a worry from now to early August. Avoid impulsive spending.

You can either move forward with personal decisions from now to early August or anything you have been attempting to make a decision on can become apparent. Something that requires other people to be involved could become clearer. What you would like from the situation in the long term could fall into place easily.

Health matters, not necessarily your own, could interfere with social plans that have already been put in place. You could be quite happy to isolate yourself and get on with work that has been put to one side for too long. There is much you can accomplish. Things will begin to go your way more from late July to early August.

Any situation involving you with a group of people that has experienced hold ups could now move forward. This week could be the beginning of a lot activity with other people. Don’t feel you need to be involved just because it is expected of you, especially if this will cause difficulty with responsibilities you must see to.

Having to move back to a situation you thought you had moved on from can cause some aggravation. It may seem that you get little choice right now. All you can do is move forward with decisions from now to early August that are connected to the responsibilities you are happy to accept. See what pans out by the end of the year.

A way forward when it comes to the future may become clearer from now to early August though it may be necessary to gather more information. This could be generated because of somebody else doubting your ideas. In the end though the detail and work involved will be up to you so you need to decide if you want this.

You need to be careful when it comes to your finances and anything expected or recommended through other people. If you feel you are being pushed into something you don’t want, especially if it will cost you money, don’t be afraid to put a hold on it. This may not be the best time to splurge out on a holiday either.

You can be very busy with other people. If they have been holding back when it comes to making a final decision on something, they will move forward from now to early August. If there is something you want to have done at home that requires other people to get involved now would be the time to move forward on that.

This is a good time to get moving when it comes to get on with the job of getting rid of things you have been thinking about for some time especially if this will make things easier for you on a daily basis. You could also make a decision to develop your fitness level or pay better attention to improving your eating habits.

The opportunity to involve yourself in things you enjoy could present itself perhaps in an area you had given up on or didn’t think would go ahead. This could bring you into contact with people you have not seen in a while or that have some sort of connection to situations you have been involved with in the past. Much to enjoy.

WE BELIEVE IN ABBOTSFORD. and we think you should, too.

Picture the difference between celebrating Canada Day alone, and a gathering with family and friends, music and food, conversations and connections. That’s the difference Abbotsford Tech District will make for the Fraser Valley tech sector. It will create a gathering place for innovation and entrepreneurship by BC-based startup companies, with a focus on agricultural technology and aerospace. More young people will be able to stay in Abbotsford for education, affordable homes, and family-supporting jobs that embrace our agricultural roots to grow our future. Everyone will benefit as a multi-billion-dollar private sector investment strengthens the local economy. To learn more, go to www.abbotsford.tech.
