“The classroom is an essential part of a child’s social, academic and mental development, and that’s why we are working hard to ensure students can safely spend the next school year with their teachers and classmates,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education. “We were the only jurisdiction in Canada that brought students back into the classroom provincewide before the end of the school year and this has given us valuable information that we are using to develop our plans, ensuring health and safety at schools remain paramount.” On the advice of the provincial health officer, students will be organized into learning groups, a consistent group of staff and students. This will reduce the number of people each student or staff

member will come into contact with, reducing the risk of transmission and ensuring quicker contact tracing by health authorities. All boards of education and independent school authorities will continue to be required to implement a suite of health and safety measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, following the recently updated guidelines from the BC Centre for Disease Control. "We know how important it is for children to be back in school – to both support their emotional and mental health and their ability to socialize and to learn,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer. To support and ensure the health and safety of students and staff during this pandemic, a onetime investment of $45.6 million as part of the BC COVID-19 Action Plan will support school districts and independent schools for the start of the school year. This investment will ensure the increased cleaning of high-contact surfaces, increased number of hand-

hygiene stations and the availability of masks upon request, among other safety measures. Staff and students (or their parents/guardians) must also assess themselves daily for symptoms of COVID-19. If any student or staff member has even mild symptoms, arrangements will be made for that person to return home. The ministry is developing operational guidelines that will further assist school districts and independent schools with their planning for September. An education steering committee including teachers, parents, Indigenous rightsholders, support staff, principals and vice-principals, school trustees and the public health sector has also been established to identify best practices and find solutions to potential issues.

Families will hear from their school district or independent school throughout the summer with updated health and safety guidelines for elementary, middle and secondary schools, as well as learning groups, schedules, enrolment and registration information with the final details being submitted to the ministry and posted online by the districts on Aug. 26, 2020. “The safety of students and staff is paramount and government will continue to make science-based decisions, following the expert advice of Dr. Henry and her public health team,” Fleming said.

Joining UFV as community partners are the First Nations Health Authority, Fraser Health, and the Divisions of Family Practice of Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Mission, which represents family physicians in those regions. Current areas of research being pursued by Hub researchers include the use of robotics and artificial intelligence in addressing social isolation

in youth and older adults, fire safety in on-reserve communities, workflow analysis and team-based care in longterm care facilities, data collection on cannabis, and grief and work in a pandemic.

Our commitment to our community partners is to support a responsive, nimble, and flexible approach to research and ultimately the utilization of the results of those efforts,” Dow says. “It’s really all about bridging the university with the communities we serve through knowledge mobilization. We want to collaborate with our partners as we answer the question ‘given what we know, what should we do?’” The Hub is multidisciplinary with projects already drawing on the expertise of faculty and students from a variety of disciplines, including nursing, psychology, sociology, kinesiology, economics, and computing sciences. The Hub has partnered with Dr. Cindy Jardine, UFV’s Canada Research Chair in Health and Community, tapping into her federally funded research on the health information needs and gaps faced by families visiting friends and relatives in their countries of origin, as related to contagious diseases like COVID-19 and international travel.

PAGE 6

“The synergy on this project was a great proof of concept as the Hub’s partnership with the Divisions of Family Practice provided the access to physicians that was a key component to the project,” says Dow. After a visit to the HUB, UFV President Joanne MacLean is excited about its potential. “The Hub will be an important space for our students to engage in research and for UFV to build relationships with our communities,” she said. “It is a true partnership, in that community stakeholders had an idea, the university responded with the establishment of the Hub, and community partners combined their annual funds for innovation to provide the seed funding.” After completing graduate programs, UFV alumni Leah Bishop and Spencer Huesken have returned to UFV as research associates, with recent BA graduates Esther Jimenez Atochero, Chelsea Novakowski, and RuoYu Xiao turning their undergraduate research experience into positions with the Hub. Dow sees great potential for the Hub. “Our approach is centred on bringing researchers, students, and community partners to the table as we try to address some of the most critical challenges facing our communities and it is that spirit of collaboration and humility that will guide our practice,” she notes.

“BRIDGING COMMUNITIES”

Letter to the Editor This is an open letter to the City on racial justice by Abbotsford Interfaith Movement founder, Harold Rosen. Dear Mayor and Council, The Abbotsford Interfaith Movement applauds your good service to our City. We especially appreciate the Official Community Plan and the possibility of a City of Centres with diverse yet integrated neighbourhoods. We find it encouraging that there has been notable focus on diversity-inclusion, along with better monitoring of civic and economic practices in the direction of sustainability. No doubt, you are currently attending to the double challenge of the coronavirus and the racial justice protests. Some of our members attended the Abbotsford ‘Black Lives Matter’ protest in the old downtown area on June 5, 2020. This demonstration was peaceful and friendly, while generating the collective sense that effective action must be taken to remedy systemic injustice. It is our sincere desire to contribute to racial justice in Abbotsford, and we urge that this is a very timely matter in both the national and continental context. We wonder if the City might organize a Diversity Inclusion Conference to examine such attitudes and practices as prejudice, implicit bias, white privilege, and discrimination – in an inter-agency and multi-disciplinary context. Perhaps it is also appropriate to re-consider Indigenous rights and the processes of Reconciliation. As an Interfaith Community, we are aware of diverse yet complementary imperatives on racial justice. “The hurt of one is the hurt of all, and the honour of one is the honour of all” said Chief Dan George. “Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?” asked the Jewish Scriptures. “God has made of one blood all nations… Love one another” pronounced the Christian Scriptures. “God has made you diverse. So vie with one another in good works, rather than beliefs” declared the Islamic Scriptures. “All humans are one. Our mis-understanding creates difference” affirmed the Sikh Scriptures. “The Creator does not favour this nation nor that nation. All alike are His family” proclaimed the Baha’i Scriptures. As Canadians we are bound in a wellconceived body of legal documents and principles. These include the

Constitution, the Citizenship Act, the Human Rights Act, the Multiculturalism Act, the Criminal Code on Hate Crime, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. These all promulgate equality under the law, forbid discrimination, while enjoining respect for the dignity and worth of every person. Given these parameters and the traditional guidance of humanity’s faith traditions, we offer several additional questions and suggestions for your serious deliberation. Can the Council administer some preliminary public hearings addressing questions of community security, hate crime, and ethnic relations? In Abbotsford, what are the patterns of hate-related offences – patterns among perpetrators, victims, settings, means, methods and content? Who can assist with preventing such offences? That is, what agencies, professions, social units can play especially constructive roles in reducing such incidents?

What programs or projects have been addressing hate-related incidents, and what is their track-record, experience, and degree of effectiveness? Would the Council consider setting up a new set of Truth and Reconciliation circles, to bring better understanding and healing between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians?

Could there be some Neighbourhood Conferences for Young People, offering grassroots diversity education along with befriending opportunities? Perhaps initiatives such as these could be integrated with aspects of the Official Community Plan. Of course, agencies and institutions such as the Police Department, Matsqui First Nation, Sumas Indian Band, Archway Community Services, the University of the Fraser Valley, the Human Dignity Coalition, Faith Communities and the Abbotsford Interfaith Movement could be called upon as co-planners.

WE SPECIALIZE IN VISITOR VISA INSURANCE!

Whatever the case, we hope you will reflect on these matters, and we stand ready to assist you in any way you deem appropriate. In Gratitude and Faith, Executive of the Abbotsford Interfaith Movement

A recent donation of $5,000 from Community Futures South Fraser increased the funding available for the current pool of applicants that applied in June, allowing more grants to be disbursed. I'm completely open to doing shows and films on OTT platform : Zareen Khan If there's one actress who has tried out varied genres and successfully nailed her stint in each one of them, it would be Zareen Khan. The beautiful heroine who made her debut opposite superstar Salman Khan, might not have had an easy road, because she didn't have the privilege or entitlement that many others enjoy, but she's consciously made some calculated choices that have worked wonderfully for her. Her films and characters - from Veer to Hate Story 3 to Housefull 2 - show a complete graph for a performer.Right now, Zareen has taken a quantum leap

from her contemporaries and played a character that many of her peers would shy away from. In her next film Hum Bhi Akele Tum Bhi Akele, the talented star will be seen playing a homosexual character, trying to reduce the stigma around the LGBTQ community in the country. The film, that was being readied for a theatrical release, is now planning to take the digital route. With the situation in the country, there's more emphasis on projects that are being made for the OTT platforms and Zareen is ready to take the plunge. She asserts, "I'm definitely open to doing web series. If a great offer comes, why not? I'd love to be a part of it. There are a lot of misconceptions about me not being comfortable with the digital space. But I'm willing to try that space out for sure, especially given the kind of great content these platforms are showcasing today. It's been our only source of entertainment right now throughout the lockdown.

Actress Anjali Patil is quite excited about her upcoming film that is slated to release on a digital platform.he film "My Client's Wife", also featuring Sharib Hashmi and Abhimanyu Singh, is a suspense drama. " ‘My Client's Wife' is an intelligent thriller. The story is peppered with twists and turns and my character is wickedly grey," said Anjali. Excited about her film premiering on an OTT platform, she added: "We live in a digital world, even more so now. With everyone staying in, it is a brilliant effort to deliver some truly "different" movies to people. I'm gung-ho about the film coming digitally." Added Bhasker Tiwari, producer of the film: "The plot is the superstar of our film. Not very often has this kind of a concept been experimented with in India. It is

an ode to (Alfred) Hitchcock."Sharib, essaying the role of a no-nonsense lawyer in the film, said: "Once I read the script, it was a no brainer that I'm all in. An added bonus was the opportunity to work with Abhimanyu and Anjali. "Abhimanyu, who plays the devious husband Raghuram, said: "About my role or the film, the lesser you know the better. amilies in Abbotsford and Langley will soon have access to over 400 new licensed child care spaces as part of the Province’s ongoing commitment to increase child care through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

“These hundreds of new licensed child care spaces are being created right in the hearts of two strong, growing communities,” said Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care. “Parents in Abbotsford and Langley are working hard to build the futures they want and deserve for their families, and these new spaces will provide them with more opportunities to thrive and achieve their dreams.” Childcare BC’s New Spaces Fund is supporting the following six projects to create 427 new licensed child care spaces for families:

Although parks have wide open spaces, most visitors are often confined to trails that can become crowded in certain areas like viewpoints. Overuse of trails leads to environmental impacts, such as trail widening, soil erosion, altered hydrology and damaged vegetation.

“We strongly support BC Parks reopening these six popular parks, while working to manage visitation and conserve nature in the places we love,” said Bruce Passmore, executive director, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, B.C. chapter. “With many people staying home this summer, the demand for outdoor recreation continues to surge, putting more pressure on our park system. We welcome solutions that will help manage overcrowding in certain areas and strengthen our opportunity to protect vital ecosystems.”

Beginning Monday, July 27, 2020, people can get a free BC Parks day-use pass and visit certain areas in six of the busiest parks, including: Backcountry campers with camping permits are not required to reserve a day-use pass, but Mount Robson Park: Berg Lake Trail should carry proof of their camping permit Stawamus Chief Park: Chief Peaks Trail if they are using one of the select trails that Cypress Park: upper mountain trails, includ- require a pass. Youth at risk in Metro Vancouver who are living with mental health and addictions challenges will get the counselling support they need and deserve, thanks to continued funding for Dan’s Legacy Foundation.

Funding will be used to improve access to the foundation’s trauma-informed and

culturally sensitive counselling services. The services are holistic and combine cognitive behaviour therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy and mindfulness. They also include life-skills workshops on self-regulation, such as diet, exercise and positive thinking.

The Province has allocated $288,000 in grant funding to the foundation. The funding will ensure four of its current therapists, whose positions were made possible by provincial funding in 2018-19, will be able to continue to provide much-needed trauma-based “We’re working hard to ensure mental health and addictions that youth who struggle with mental health and addictions counselling for youth. have access to safe and inLast year, through previous clusive counselling services, support from the Province, including those through Dan’s Dan’s Legacy supported more Legacy,” said Katrine Conthan 250 youth at risk, dou- roy, Minister of Children and bling its intake from the pre- Family Development. “We vious year. You can have a clearer idea of the results or success that is possible with something you could have started out with 2 years ago. Anything that has gone through hold ups since late May can now move forward to early August. If you feel there are obligations that need to be dropped now is the time to take definite action.

There could be some frustration when it comes to money matters, especially if a past situation wasn’t properly dealt with. The need to communicate or do a lot of running around can step up from now to early August. Anything that has been held up or has not been clear can move forward. Avoid taking on too much though.

Attempting to enjoy yourself socially could be disrupted by the expectations of somebody else or restricted because of obligations connected to the needs of somebody else. A sense of being able to move forward when it comes to finances can result in less of a worry from now to early August. Avoid impulsive spending.

You can either move forward with personal decisions from now to early August or anything you have been attempting to make a decision on can become apparent. Something that requires other people to be involved could become clearer. What you would like from the situation in the long term could fall into place easily.

Health matters, not necessarily your own, could interfere with social plans that have already been put in place. You could be quite happy to isolate yourself and get on with work that has been put to one side for too long. There is much you can accomplish. Things will begin to go your way more from late July to early August.

Any situation involving you with a group of people that has experienced hold ups could now move forward. This week could be the beginning of a lot activity with other people. Don’t feel you need to be involved just because it is expected of you, especially if this will cause difficulty with responsibilities you must see to.

Having to move back to a situation you thought you had moved on from can cause some aggravation. It may seem that you get little choice right now. All you can do is move forward with decisions from now to early August that are connected to the responsibilities you are happy to accept. See what pans out by the end of the year.

A way forward when it comes to the future may become clearer from now to early August though it may be necessary to gather more information. This could be generated because of somebody else doubting your ideas. In the end though the detail and work involved will be up to you so you need to decide if you want this.

You need to be careful when it comes to your finances and anything expected or recommended through other people. If you feel you are being pushed into something you don’t want, especially if it will cost you money, don’t be afraid to put a hold on it. This may not be the best time to splurge out on a holiday either.

You can be very busy with other people. If they have been holding back when it comes to making a final decision on something, they will move forward from now to early August. If there is something you want to have done at home that requires other people to get involved now would be the time to move forward on that.

This is a good time to get moving when it comes to get on with the job of getting rid of things you have been thinking about for some time especially if this will make things easier for you on a daily basis. You could also make a decision to develop your fitness level or pay better attention to improving your eating habits.

The opportunity to involve yourself in things you enjoy could present itself perhaps in an area you had given up on or didn’t think would go ahead. This could bring you into contact with people you have not seen in a while or that have some sort of connection to situations you have been involved with in the past. Much to enjoy.

Tips for savouring a summer weekend getaway

NC) As we adapt to the changing world around us, we cherish our weekend getaways – from camping to cottage trips – more than ever. Despite the beauty of our country, we often only have a brief few months to truly appreciate the great outdoors. This summer, make the most of these experiences by creating lasting memories to keep you warm through to next season. Before heading out for a countryside retreat or rugged escape, it’s important to remember some key tips to make these moments count: Bring fun options. Rest assured that everyone can have a great time regardless of weather, lunch menus or lake temperatures. For those who tend to shy away from adventure, remember to pack a board game and deck of cards. Meanwhile, hiking boots and a karaoke machine are stellar entertainment ideas for extroverts. Pack the essentials. While a getaway is all about escaping, don’t forget a key essential – an extra battery pack or a phone with a long-lasting battery. Unplugging is important, but a working phone is crucial in case of an emergency.

Megan Henwood and Callum Bottrell are young farmers with a vision of creating a mixed farm, producing vegetables, duck eggs and grains to supply their food truck operation. Land matchers provide personalized support services to new farmers and landholders to help them better understand regulations, evaluate opportunities, access resources and find a land match partner.
