Written in the midst of a time of powerful social change, the authors hope this work contributes to the kind of education and learning that will nurture empathy and unity, thereby supporting us in being the best neighbours we can be to one another.

Taking charge of your finances

If keeping up with bills and financial obligations has become a challenge, you’re not alone. There are ways you can begin to take charge of your personal finances once again. Know your options If you're having trouble paying for ongoing expenses or anticipate challenges in making ends meet in the near future, contact your financial institution to find out how they can help. During the pandemic, many banks provided their customers with financial relief programs, including the option to temporarily defer mortgage payments. While many of these programs have ended, banks continue to encourage customers to discuss other relief options with them.

Set a budget A budget can help you stick to a debt repayment plan and establish spending priorities. It can also incorporate a savings plan tailored to your needs. You can use the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s free interactive online budget planner to create a personalized budget. It includes tips, advice and alerts to help you take charge of your finances. Try to avoid taking on more debt If you must borrow money, make sure you understand the cost of different credit products before you decide, and borrow only what you need. Certain credit products are more expensive than others due to their high interest rates and fees. For example, a payday loan should be your absolute last resort, as they often have very high fees. Nominations open to honour excellence in B.C. education In recognition of World Teachers’ Day, nominations are now open for the Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education. The awards honour B.C. teachers, support staff workers, administrators and school district leaders who have made outstanding contributions to their students and school communities. “Every day in our province, education professionals put the needs of students first in order to best support their personal growth and academic potential,” said Premier John Horgan. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers, support staff and administrators have worked tirelessly to ensure students stay safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. These awards allow us to celebrate education professionals who have gone above and beyond in classrooms and schools across the province.”

the Public Health Office (PHO) and BC Centre for Disease Control to allow children to safely attend school on a full-time, in-person basis,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education. “We know there is a high level of concern among some parents, students, teachers and boards of education, especially in regions of B.C. where transmission rates are higher. We are listening to the concerns of people and, on the advice of the provincial health officer, taking further action so that families, students and staff feel secure.”

As announced in August, regional medical health officers (MHOs) may recommend additional health and safety measures in response to local and regional conditions. MHOs will continue to work with school districts to recommend any additional regional measures as required. These measures build on the existing K-12 health and safety guidelines, which were developed in consultation with all education partners. The guidelines include daily health checks, hand washing, staying home when sick and improved ventilation systems. The guidelines also contain strategies for schools to help create space between people, including staggered recess, lunch breaks and class transition times, managing the flow of people in common areas, and using available space to spread people out.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 4, 2021, all students in B.C. schools will be required to wear a mask when inside a school building, including while at their desks and on buses. This builds on the existing guidelines that currently apply to all students in grades 4 to 12. Government will continue to be responsive to changes in the pandemic “This pandemic continues to evolve and will continue working with parand so do we,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, ents, teachers, school districts, First provincial health officer. “We need to Nations rights-holders and all educamake changes to fit the situation as tion partners to make sure schools are it’s arising. B.C. improves access to addictions recovery People living with substance-use challenges will benefit from the Province’s renewed commitment to the BC Addiction Recovery Association (BCARA), making recovery possible and accessible. “We want people facing addictions to get services when they need them,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “I’m grateful for BCARA’s work to offer quality care for everyone, so people are supported when ready to begin their healing journey.” The Province is investing $50,000 to support the BCARA as it hires staff and establishes best practices for the operation of treatment and recovery residences. The non-profit includes leaders from addiction recovery services throughout the province and aims to provide leadership, collaboration, training, education, research and advocacy for the sector, ensuring recovery-oriented and safe services are available for people in B.C. PAGE 14

“We are grateful for the support of this important resource for our sector, particularly when we are in the midst of a dual health crisis,” said Brenda Plant, board chair, BCARA. “Our vision is to provide leadership to our members, to ensure enhanced recovery-oriented and research-informed addiction services are readily available and to work with government in the development of sector-focused policies, standards and regulations. With this funding, we will be able to increase our capacity to deliver on our vision and ultimately support individuals in British Columbia with substance-use challenges along their recovery journey. Our board looks forward to working with our government partners and with our newly appointed executive director, Sherry Mumford, to advance these goals.”

development of regulations and standards for registered supportive recovery services to strengthen consistency throughout the province. The Province works with partners such as BCARA to improve treatment and recovery services by encouraging consistent quality and standards across the board. This joint work is one more step on the journey toward building a comprehensive system of mental health and addictions care.

BCARA was formerly known as the Recovery Council of B.C. It grew from the early work of the B.C. Centre on Substance Use, recognizing recovery as an integral part of the interventions for people affected by addiction. BCARA provides a voice for providers in responding to the toxic drug emergency. Year-end funding from the Province, through The Province is working to improve the Ministry of Mental Health and the safety, quality and oversight of Addictions, established BCARA as treatment and recovery services in a non-profit society in 2020. Micro-credentials a gateway to support B.C. workers As the needs of B.C.’s workforce continue to change and grow, more British Columbians will have access to microcredential learning opportunities in a range of industries, preparing workers for highdemand, good-paying jobs. “Micro-credentials support lifelong learning by enhancing access to post-secondary education through shorter, competency-based training opportunities,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “Our government recognizes the need for opportunities to up-skill and re-skill, and these micro-credentials will assist workers who want to transition to in-demand jobs. I’m proud of our post-secondary institutions for stepping up to the challenge and delivering these courses to help meet the needs of a rapidly changing workforce.” A total investment of $5 million will support the development and implementation of additional microcredentials at public post-secondary institutions for British Columbians who want to take advantage of employment opportunities in growing sectors throughout the province. This funding will support the development and implementation of an additional 35 micro-credentials aligned with government and labour market priorities to be delivered to 7,500 learners over a three-year period. “As our economy continues to recover from the pandemic and adapt to our new world, we need to provide more up-skill opportunities to better support the needs of our workforce,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “Micro-credentials are a bridge for workers to enhance their skills and take advantage of job openings in high-demand fields.” Micro-credentials recognize standalone, short-duration learning expe-

They are more readily accessible to non-traditional and marginalized learners, thanks to their shorter time frame, flexible delivery and more focused content. A new micro-credential framework established through ongoing consultation with key industry and educational partners has been developed to provide guidance and clarity about how micro-credentials fit within the current post-secondary system. The framework promotes communication between industry and post-secondary institutions, re-skilling and upskilling for the future economy and workforce and encourages consistent and co-ordinated development of micro-credentials across the public post-secondary system.

“When we consulted with the business community on our StrongerBC Economic Recovery Plan, they told us a PST rebate would help them make the kind of capital investments that would not just be about short-term recovery, but also longterm growth,” said Selina Robinson. “As the program deadline approaches, we see there is still a need, so we are staff employed and continued to keep extending the program to give more our community fed. You could feel you are being overlooked. Something that was discussed last week that seemed firm could now become less so. It would be best to allow matters to float until mid October. Then you can rely on promises being kept. All you can do right now is put your priorities forward. You could benefit from recommendation.

Involvement with others can be easygoing and pleasant, even though it may be difficult to work out where things stand. You can take the opportunity to question future possibilities but expect difficulty when it comes to getting some straight answers. You must remain focussed on routine obligations already in place.

Somebody else may decide to put something you were looking forward to, associated with leisure or pleasure, on hold for the moment. This is likely to eventually go ahead. From mid October onwards will be more reliable. Future prospects can be stable, though you should not try to do too much at once.

Anything you want to restructure that requires agreement from somebody else could have some hold-ups to mid October. This does not mean that your ideas are not accepted but rather they feel they need time to further contemplate your suggestions. Meanwhile focus on enjoying any social opportunities this week.

Something might need another look, especially when it comes to the finer details. You could discover details you have previously missed. You could also become aware of structuring matters that would bring greater balance, agreement, even pleasure when it comes to things that need to be managed on a regular basis.

Think twice before you spend money on anything that might give you pleasure to have but don’t really need. This might include keeping an eye on your daily spending. You will get greatest pleasure from communication with others that is creatively or spiritually orientated, even sharing opinions on what you have watched or read.

You could realise there could be better ways of putting things in place. Anything you have organised or planned related to home or family matters might need to be altered, especially if you realise it is not suiting you entirely on a personal level. There is no rush to have this sorted right now. You have got until mid October.

Don’t overlook something that doesn’t seem right when it comes to somebody else. If they don’t want to go along with you they are unlikely to be upfront about it. You could eventually discover the fact. There is a lot going on behind the scenes. Best you be patient, as matters will eventually surface. Enjoy what you can right now.

Any situation involving you with a group of people could have its challenges. Involved in this can be people saying or promising one thing but then doing another. The lack of control you have can be very frustrating. You will be on the same wavelength with somebody so all is not lost. Work through it to mid October.

You should not waste time, up to mid October in clearing up any work that you have got behind with or sorting out matters that you decided to leave until later. You can be busy socially, not because you have necessarily planned it that way but rather that it falls into place through circumstance. Be sensible with money matters.

Initiating future plans involving somebody else can be easy. Don’t try to do too much, too soon though. A slow steady pace will be more successful. Part of this can include keeping some of your thoughts under wraps at the moment. You need to see how things unfold to mid October when future possibilities can become clear.

Guard against having a vision of the future, which is unrealistic when it comes to the input or involvement of other people in any of the circumstances. There could be some tension between what your priorities are and the intentions they have. Moving forward on this with any certainty may not be possible until mid October onwards.

Problem is in glorifying a toxic character : Radhika Madan

Radhika Madan is excited and relieved in equal measure that Shiddat, which was held off due to the pandemic, has finally reached the audience. The Disney+Hotstar offering is a classic story of opposites attract as her pragmatic Kartika falls in love with the emotional Jaggi, essayed by Sunny Kaushal. “Kartika has some shades of grey as well. She has complicated the concept of love

so much that she doesn’t know what to do with it when it comes her way. In the world of dating apps where relationships start with swipes, and we want one person to tick all our boxes, we are not leaving enough room for love to bloom,” says Madan. In telling an intense love story, director Kunal Deshmukh and the cast had the responsibility of ensuring that the characters don’t tread into a toxic zone. As the leading lady, Madan says she is mindful of how love should be depicted on screen. “The problem is not with playing a toxic character, but in glorifying him/her. With Jaggi, we ensured that he is pure. He isn’t a stalker. He is child-like, and is not afraid to be vulnerable. The motivation of the character is important.”

Felt validated as an actor : Nushrratt

After playing the girlnext-door in her films, Raj Mehta’s Khilona in the four-part Netflix anthology, Ajeeb Daastaans showcased Nushrratt Bharuccha in a new light. “The character was a career-high for me. I did this film purely for the joy of it. The feedback I received when the film released filled my heart with gratitude. Now, the respect is on a global scale,”

says the actor, who has been nominated in the Best Actor category at the Asian Content Awards held during the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). “Success of any kind validates you as an actor,” says Bharuccha, adding that being nominated among other talented artistes affirms her choices. “It tells me that I [managed] to cut through the

I am my only mentor : Vikrant Massey Like many of his colleagues, Vikrant Massey, too, spent a major part of the lockdown this year watching a lot of content online. Interestingly, through 2020-2021, several of his films were released digitally, and in most of them, he was seen as the leading actor. When asked whether he feels disappointed that he couldn’t see himself on the big screen playing these prominent parts, the Haseen Dilruba actor says, “You do feel disheartened as you shoot for a film thinking it will release in a theatre and you will get to see yourself on the big screen. However, I am thankful that there was a medium that was able to showcase fresh content during these tough times. So many of my projects were released on OTT. In the end, it is all about reaching out to people to communicate with them through your stories, irrespective of the medium. Watching films in a theatre, unanimously with the community, has been a part of our staple diet for

Taapsee Pannu-starrer a highly anticipated film shares a story of an incredibly fast runner who dreams of crossing the finish line and winning many accolades for her country. The primary issue that the movie tackles is gender testing in sports. The film’s trailer has been very

years. It’s an experience in itself and I hope we get to witness it soon.” From acting in television shows, films and web shows and playing character roles to essaying main leads in films — Vikrant has come a long way. Yet, the Chhapaak actor stays away from the conventional route Bollywood heroes take to remain in the news. “It probably doesn’t come naturally to me,” he says, adding, “Looking fashionable all the time, splashing glamourous pictures and being active on social media is something I am not a pro at. These peripherals are very important today. I have been in the industry for more than a decade, yet I don’t have a massive number of followers on social media. It’s not something I am whining about, but it is something that I recognise as an important aspect today. I am working on it, but within my comfort zone. I would rather focus on catering to my audience through my priority, which is acting.”

well received. People are eager to see Taapsee in another impactful role, tackling another indiscriminately issue against women. Talking about the issue of gender testing in sports, Taapsee Pannu shared in an interaction, “I met Nanda, who had the story with him for this film. He had made a very beautiful AV of the story for my reference. When I saw it, I was honestly shocked because I like watching sports and follow it a lot too, but still, I had no idea about the gender testing issue that the film highlights. I had to Google it. I was completely shocked after I got to know the details about this particular issue." Highlighting the same, Priyanshu Painyuli who plays Taapsee’s partner in the movie further added, “I got to know about the gender testing issue through Rashmi Rocket. While shooting I checked with our director Akarsh, that are we taking creative liberty for the movie or is this truly happening and I was shocked to know that this is truly happening. We are hoping that through our movie, this issue is highlighted to a larger section of the society.”

Actress Bhumi Pednekar says she wants to do films that portray women correctly and she is thankful to the directors she has collaborated with because they shared the same vision for societal change. Bhumi started her journey in Hindi cinema with the hit film ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ in 2015. She was then seen in films such as ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’, ‘Son Chiriya’, ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’, ‘Bala’, and ‘Sandh Ki Aankh’ among others. The actress is now looking forward to her upcoming line up, which includes ‘Mr. Lele’, ‘Badhaai Do’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’. The actress said: “I have always been super confident of my film choices. I have always wanted them to be different and unique, preferably

with a message and most importantly, portray women correctly.”Bhumi added: “As a woman, I feel it is my duty to choose scripts that portray women with a lot of dignity. I’m happy that I have got the chance to play such characters. This is due to the fantastic scripts that have come my way.” The actress feels “hugely fortunate” that she have got directors who had an amazing vision of portraying women in a certain way that impacts society positively. She said: “I’m fortunate for all the opportunities that allowed me to play such characters. These stood up for themselves and society. I connected with my characters at a deeper level and maybe that’s why people loved them too.”
