"B.C. Indo-Canadian Banquet Hall Owners are being Discriminated in NDP’s Decision to Shut Down Stand Alone Banquet Halls": Mindi Virk

M

indi Virk, the owner and operator of Aria Banquet hall expressed his deep regrets in the decision made by the BC NDP government to shut down all independent banquet halls in midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to the announcement made on September 8th to immediately close all nightclubs and stand alone banquet halls, Mindi and his team were mandated to allow only 50 people at their banquet hall. “It doesn’t make any sense,” he says. “Banquet halls have at least 15,000 square feet of space if not more, and we aren’t allowed to accommodate even one eighth our capacity, yet restaurants that are not even one fourth of our space are allowed to seat half their capacity. Within an 8 hour time period, restaurants can serve an upward of 400 people.”

Mindi claims that the NDP’s decision is discriminating against IndoCanadians, since most stand alone banquet halls are situated in Surrey, BC and are owned and operated by Indo-Canadians. “Why is it that this decision only effects stand-alone banquet halls? Why doesn’t it effect hotel banquets rooms, and golf course banquet halls? I had phone calls from hotels with ballrooms asking me to send our business their way” says Virk. The repercussions of this decision extend beyond Aria Banquet Hall. The Indian wedding industry is vast, and the government’s decision has impacted a large number of wedding vendors including videographers, photographers, Indian caterers, décor artists, makeup artists, and jewelry & costume designers. In addition, Mindi claims that Indian banquet halls hire over 1,200 people who are now left jobless, many who are international

students working to support their tuition fees. Earlier this year, Mindi and his colleagues sent a proposal to Provincial Health O f f i c e r , D r. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Health, Adrian Dix to allow banquet halls to accommodate more guests provided that all attendees have 8ft of space between them. They did not receive a response until the announcement was televised. The next day, they received a response saying that their proposal would not be accepted. Mindi is especially bothered by the fact that schools were opened a week after the announcement, where classrooms are much smaller than banquet halls.

“I am starting to think the government is finding ways to attack Indo-Canadians. A large proportion of taxis are owned and operated by Indo-Canadians, and despite their promises prior to the election, the NDP’s introduced Uber. Around the same time, they passed a legislation that limited the size of houses that are built in farming land, while knowing full well that Indo-Canadians live in multi-family homes.” PAGE 3

Supports extended for youth aging out of care

Y

outh in government care will be able to stay where they are and those who have recently aged out of care will receive extra support, as government extends and builds on COVID-19 emergency measures. “This pandemic is not over. I want youth in care to be assured that they will be able to continue receiving the supports they count on and won’t have the added stress of aging out during these challenging times,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development. “Especially right now, youth in our care need and deserve to feel supported and safe and our government wants to make sure that happens.”

supports and rehabilitation supports through the Agreements with Young Adults (AYA) program. This includes allowing young adults in the program to take part in a wider range of lifeskills programs and cultural learning options, as well as online programming, with fewer required hours of participation per week. As of Oct. 1, 2020, more flexibility is being granted for young adults to access mental health and rehabilitative supports while participating in the AYA program — along with a lower hourly requirement for these programs. “We’ve heard from youth and youth advocates that easily accessible lifeskills and mental health supports are an important stepping-stone between aging out of care and living as an adult and we saw that these initiatives we brought in during the pandemic proved successful in reaching a broad range of youth from care,” Conroy said. “Not everyone is ready to go to school or start working right away, so we’re making it easier for young adults to get the supports they need to thrive.”

To ensure youth who are set to age out of care continue to have a safe place to stay during the pandemic, youth currently living in foster care, contracted residential agencies or with relatives through the extended family program, will be able to stay in their placements past their 19th birthday— and youth on Independent Living Agreements and Youth Agreements will continue to receive financial supGovernment first announced emerport past their 19th birthday — until gency measures in March with a March 31, 2021. ment by Pinnacle Living Lands, which will transfer ownership to the City of Richmond upon completion. The centre is expected to be open for families in spring 2021. “The YMCA is grateful to once again work alongside the Province of B.C. and the City of Richmond to deliver quality child care to families in this community,” said Kim Adamson, general manager of child care development, YMCA of Greater Vancouver. “We know critical learning takes place in the first six years of a child’s life – learning that requires a nurturing and caring environment, and we will certainly have that at Sprouts Child Care Centre. Our passionate and dedicated early childhood educators are looking forward to providing each child with every opportunity to connect with others, learn and develop the skills needed to become confident kids today and contributing, engaged adults in the future.” An additional 4,110 spaces, funded through the 2017 Budget Update and the Early Learning and Child Care agreement with the Government of Canada, takes the total to more than 24,500 spaces since July 2017.

“The pandemic has highlighted the importance of child care, not just for children and families, but for our communities and the economy,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development. “These more than 3,600 new child care spaces are part of the fastest creation of child care spaces in B.C.’s history and show our ongoing commitment to building a child care system that benefits families across the whole province.” Investing in child care and early childhood education is a shared priority between government and the BC Green Party caucus, and is part of the Confidence and Supply Agreement. “Quality, accessible, public child care is a crucial component to B.C.’s economic recovery. This investment is needed now more than ever,” said Sonia Furstenau, MLA for Cowichan Valley. “Expanding access to public child care and early childhood education spaces has been foundational to this minority government, and the new licensed spaces are one step closer to ensuring all of our children have access to high-quality education and are set up for success.”

I'm not worried about when work will start : Sonakshi Sinha Actress Sonakshi Sinha says she is not fretting about getting back to work, or how the industry will change in the Covid era. The actress shared that she is loving the lockdown life for now. "I am just going to admit that I am loving lockdown life. In the last 10 years, I haven't gotten a break for so long, where I have been able to spend time with myself, understand what I want from life, do the things I like to do and just be one with yourself, sort your head out, contemplate and understand what's important and what's not important in life. I'm really loving it," Sonakshi said. "I am not worried about when work will start, and how it will be. I know it's going to be difficult going back to the set, with 'what you are touching' , 'don't touch your face', and with people in PPE kits. I did one photoshoot and it was so strange being around people who are covered up head to toe and you are the only one open. You are like 'keep your hands to yourself and don't touch your face', sanitise every five minutes. It's really weird," she added. The actress is "keeping that

People should talk of kalaripayattu, the Indian martial art : Vidyut Jammwal

Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal says his vision is to popularise the indigenous martial art kalaripayattu through Indian cinema.Vidyut is a trained martial artiste and has learnt kalaripayattu since the age of three."I don't have a vision yet about how it should be presented, but my vision for Indian cinema is that people should talk about kalaripayattu, the martial art. It is an original Indian martial art," Vidyut said."When I go and pursue an award from Jackie Chan, and when they talk of kalaripayattu, the Indian martial art, I feel proud. My vision for Indian action cinema worldwide is that we need to present this," he said about popularising kalaripayattu on screen.Vidyut, who rose to fame with the "Commando" franchise of films, notes many things that are popular globally today actually originated in India."When I lie down on spears, they say, 'Shaolin monks bhi karte hain (Shaolin monks also do this)'. Shaolin monks isliye karte hain (Shaolin Monks do it) because they learnt it from an Indian guy called Bodhidharma. I just want everybody to be aware. People should know that martial arts is an Indian skill, and that's my vision," he said. The actor was recently seen in the digitally released film, "Khuda Haafiz". He will next be seen in the film's second chapter.

worry aside and doing what makes me happy at the moment", she said, explaining it refers to "my art and painting, endless conversations with friends and spending time with family". "Right now, everybody is in the same boat. It will start when it has to start and we will move on with this and get over it," she added.Talking about her binge-watch list, Sonakshi said: "I watched so many things that I am fed up of watching anything now." "I watched 'Talaash' again because I am doing a show with Reema Katgi and I love that film. I want to read but I don't have the patience to sit down with a book. When I do my cardio, I need to have something in front of me to watch otherwise I hate doing cardio. I wish we had finished Reema's web show. It was such an exciting role for me. I can't wait to get back," she said in an episode of the show "Zoom Happy Space With Rudrani".

Realised rules of this industry were unfair : Anangsha Biswas

Actress Anangsha Biswas says she has realised that the rules in the Hindi film industry are unfair and proudly calls herself an outsider.Actor Sushant Singh untimely death on June 14 has sparked a heated debate about "insiders and outsiders" and nepotism in Bollywood."I am a theatre actor, I'm trained in acting from Sydney. In my initial years I thought I would learn and prove my talent, and get ahead in my career. Soon I realised that the rules of this industry were unfair," Anangsha said. She added: "No matter how much I worked hard, it boiled down to who I knew in the industry, and unfortunately I knew no one." Anangsha says she wants the industry to be fair."I'm an outsider and I'm proud to be one, I never wanted things to be easy but, yes, I did wish for it to be fair. I am after all as good as the opportunities I get to showcase," she said."I'm okay to lose a

Don't think your size defines your fitness : Manushi Chhillar

Beauty queen-turnedactress Manushi Chhillar says fitness for her is all about finding a balance, and that is actually a personal experience because each individual has their fitness goals."For me, fitness is all about finding your balance. It's an extremely personal and individualistic experience because each individual has their own fitness goal. I love my cheesecake and I also like to train like a machine, so that I can enjoy it," Manushi said."I think I have always wanted to push myself because I do believe we all have a lot of room for growth and become the best version of ourselves," she added.Manushi says society should not hail skinny as a sign of being fit, because the idea sets unreal fitness goals. "Perfection is also individualistic and I don't think your size defines your fitness. Each one of us wants to see ourselves in a certain way, has a certain body type and wants to feel great about it. That's what's important," she observed. She said that fitness is as much internal as it is about external beauty, adding: "I'm glad that I have realised what works for me and what doesn't." part to a better actor but it hurts to lose a part because of lineage or connections. Except a few good ones, our country's casting directors don't even call us for auditions. One either has to suck up to them or be seen in influential parties, which in my humble opinion is derogatory for an actor's talent," she added.Anangsha feels a talented person cannot be stopped. "I have over the years taken a lot of brickbats but I'm not a person who gives up. I don't crib, I feel you

cannot stop a talent, though you sure can delay them. I am hopeful that things will change and I humbly hope I can be an active part of that change," she said

Rasika Dugal gears up for 'Out Of Love' season two

She will be shooting for season two of her hit web series, Out Of Love.In the first season, she essayed the role of a physician, Dr. Meera Kapoor, whose seemingly perfect life is rocked by the revelation of her husband's infidelity. The season ended as Meera adapts to a new life as a single parent.About the second season, Rasika said: "I was excited to play a part which was driving the narrative of a series and to experience the rigours of a long shooting schedule where you are in almost every frame of the show." "Being Dr.

Meera Kapoor and attempting to experience the emotionally tumultuous ride that she is on throughout the season is a journey that any actor would desire. And the appreciation from the awards and the audiences has been a huge bonus. The second season will present Meera with a set of different challenges and I can't wait to sink my teeth into the material of this season. I will be in Coonoor for two months for the shoot. Council Takes Next Step on Mission’s Waterfront

D

istrict of Mission Council has approved an amendment to Mission’s Official Community Plan that defines the waterfront comprehensive planning area—a first step that will lead to future area planning guided by input from residents, landowners, businesses and community stakeholders.

“Developing the waterfront presents many technical challenges, such as flood protection, contaminated land, and water and sewer servicing. This is why we need to work together,” said Mayor Alexis. “A clear plan reduces financial, public safety and environmental risks that could come back to the taxpayer if these challenges are not fully considered across the entire waterfront area. A plan will create the certainty we need to move forward sustainably and collaboratively.”

“Mission is defined by its waterfront and this inclusion of the Waterfront Comprehensive Planning Area designation in our Official Community Plan is historic,” said Mayor Pam The Official Community Plan is a liv-

Alexis. “This step shows how we are making meaningful progress on one of Mission’s key priorities. When the land use planning starts, we want to see a public consultation process happen where everyone helps define the “big picture” of this defining area. We have a remarkable opportunity here, and this is our time to shape the future of our community together.” Revitalizing Mission’s waterfront has been identified as a priority in the Official Community Plan bylaw with conceptual plans dating back to 1992. By identifying these lands for future planning, Mission initiates the first steps to the revitalization of these lands that will reflect community attributes most valued by residents, such as waterfront access, recreation opportunities, and the creation of local jobs. ing document that sets out the longterm vision for Mission’s neighbourhoods and provides clear direction on how the District will manage change as it grows now and into the future. The Waterfront Comprehensive Planning Area includes almost 300 acres of land and will guide a future for the waterfront that presents a vibrant new destination that is complete, walkable and reconnects Mission to its waterfront. The third and final reading of a bylaw to add the Waterfront Comprehensive Planning Area designation to the Official Community Plan Bylaw took place at a Special Council Meeting on September 21. Strong in-class student participation for September restart As the second full week of school comes to a close, early attendance numbers show more than 85% of K-12 public school students returned for inclass learning, with increased staffing and supports, according to a Ministry of Education survey. “It’s been incredible to see so many students being able to connect with their teachers, support staff and classmates again, and that school districts developed remote options for other students across B.C.,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education. The Ministry of Education surveyed school districts and independent schools to find out what investments they were making and how they were supporting students and staff during the pandemic. To date, 44 public school districts and 129 independent schools have reported to the ministry. In the summer, Fleming directed school districts to connect with families in their community to determine their return to school plans – and to confirm if they planned for their child to attend school classes. As part of this, all school boards were given the authority to offer remote options to students within their districts, as well as the tools needed to increase their existing programs to meet any demand. If a

family needed alternative learning options, school districts were expected to work with families to provide remote options that keep children connected to their school communities. Every school is following the strict provincial health and safety guidelines co-developed for K-12 with the teachers, school leaders, the Office of the Provincial Health Officer, parents and Indigenous rightsholders. Each district is using additional provincial and federal funding to meet its local needs and configurations of its schools. In preparation for the September restart, many school districts hired staff and added staff hours. Of the school districts that have responded to date, 1,526 new positions have been created:

To support students who are either learning remotely, or for secondary students in some regions who are having a blend of online and in-class learning, districts created locally developed programs and made investments in new technology. Thousands of laptops and tablets have been purchased for remote or online learning. School District 39 (Vancouver) used restart funding to purchase 2,000 devices for students, School District 61 (Greater Victoria) purchased 1,660 new devices and School District 44 (North Vancouver) purchased 1,100 devices.

As part of implementing the health and safety guidelines, there are over 20,400 hand-sanitizing stations available for students and staff. Of the survey respondents, 88% upgraded their air 624 additional teachers hired in 34 filtration systems. school districts and 157,000 additional The ministry has also provided fundstaff hours; ing for 1.5 million non-medical masks, 73 educational assistants hired in 12 enough for every public-school staff school districts and 5,100 additional member and student to have at least staff hours; two masks. To support families, funding has allowed districts like School District 61 (Greater Victoria) to expand the number of students receiving meal programs, and School District 59 (Peace River South) brought in family support workers to assess the needs of families living in remote communities, ensuring they are connected to meal programs close to home. School districts also created local solutions for mental health support. School District 71 (Comox Valley), has added four youth and family counsellors, provided trauma-informed training for all staff, created a community resource guide and is hosting a webinar series. School District 62 (Sooke) is providing all staff with trauma-informed training, and it has also implemented a mental health literacy program for secondary students. The Province is making a first-of-itskind, made-in-B.C. mouth rinse gargle sample collection available for schoolaged students who require a COVID-19 test. This new saline method doesn’t require a health-care professional to collect the sample, and it is intended to encourage more students to get tested if they have symptoms.

Something from the past that you might want to go back to will require a lot of attention to detail. This could also mean putting new methods or means in place. This could be a choice you are making for yourself when it comes to what has been your responsibilities or commitments, especially if boundaries have been lacking.

You can become suddenly enlightened in relation to something that needs to be settled or put in place. This could involve family. Don’t be tempted to take risks where there is little clarity. Work out what you want to enjoy in the future and what could be altered in practical terms to set yourself down a new path towards this.

Get to work on anything at home that could do with newness in some way. Others might encourage this in some way though you could discover that they don’t support some things that are a priority to you. It might also be that you feel you are expected to do more than you want to, especially if it interferes with enjoyment.

Communication with others could take a new direction, especially when it comes to listening to your ideas. There could be differences though when it comes to what you want to put in place. You will want to wind back on responsibilities, not increase them. Don’t spend impulsively on something of instant appeal. Think.

Before you jump into any obligations you need to weigh up exactly how they could affect your personal position. It could also be that something pleasurable may have more commitments attached than you initially realise. A new direction might develop with a situation that is running smoothly. Don’t try to change anything.

The New Moon this week occurs in your sign, providing you with the opportunity to take a new direction with anything important to you personally. Remain confident about the way you feel with any slight risk that might be involved. The opinions of somebody else may lack understanding when it comes to what is important to you.

Stay focussed on what you think needs to be established or put in place. This can involve home or family matters but not necessarily. This can bring to an end a lack of clarity that has existed with regular routines or matters. There is no need to respond to any impatience of somebody else. Let matters take their own course.

Involvement with friends or any situation with a group of people is likely to be enjoyable, especially when it comes to the exchange of ideas. You could learn something new or hear about connections that might prove useful to you later. Take your time considering your options, if somebody expects an instant response.

New opportunities can arise in relation to your work, either present or something you might be seeking. At the same time you could feel pushed to become more innovative when it comes to generating a future direction that gives greater peace or balance. Don’t be afraid to utilise people who are in a position to help. They will.

New directions or future goals that could be pursued can become very obvious. You should feel very comfortable when it comes to having the ability to cope. It is best to do things in small steps – this way you will have greater control of the obligations attached. This will limit you from taking on too much at once and burdening yourself.

Somebody who is quite sure of themself could resonate in a surprising manner with you. This won’t necessarily mean you will feel as though you completely understand them but you should feel comfortable. This might encourage you to think about what you would like to head towards in the future, which could be next year.

New directions involving other people can generate opportunities for you to experience the fulfilment of priorities quite easily. Some differences of opinion may arise but even this does not need to produce difficulty. It might mean you will have to consider something out of the ordinary that will result in being more efficient.

Another example you may qualify for today is from your own insurance policy. feel safe and connected at school.” Building on the ERASE and A Pathway to Hope initiatives, the new Mental Health in Schools Strategy embeds positive mental health and wellness programs and services for students in all aspects of the education system. This includes culture, leadership, curriculum and learning environments. The MHiS Strategy is the result of extensive research and collaboration between education and community partners. “We know that when it comes to the health and well-being of young people, starting early and addressing small problems before they become big ones can make all the difference down the road,” said Judy Darcy, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “COVID-19 has impacted

everyone in B.C., and our students deserve access to vital supports to help them thrive – now more than ever.” Improving mental health in schools is an integral part of government’s plan to build the comprehensive system of mental health and addictions care that British Columbians deserve, as outlined in A Pathway to Hope. For the 2020-2021 school year, the government has invested $3.75 million for new and existing mental health activities for students, families and educators. Since September 2017, the Province has committed to an investment of $13.9 million in funding for school district mental health initiatives and grants spanning four years.

“Children and teens face social and emotional challenges that are even more complex during the pandemic,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development. “I am proud to work with the Ministry of Education to promote positive mental health and wellness. Together we are making life better for B.C.’s kids.” People in British Columbia may be experiencing an increase in mental health and substance use challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially those with preexisting conditions. Help is available for people of all ages, and people are encouraged to seek support. To learn more about the new Mental Health in Schools Strategy, visit: erase.gov. bc.ca
