SMART PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Life is transitory/uncertain. We don’t know what future has in store for us. It is important to make our family secure by taking necessary steps for our family after we cease to exist. This will ensure that our loved ones are protected from financial and legal problems during the time/emergence of any unforeseeable circumstance. see more on page 14

Insurance Advisor BRINDER GILL 11 years of Experience

PLEASE SUPPORT!! For the past 15 years Cozy Covers has held an annual event for a clothing drive and over 15,000 items have been donated to various shelters, transition homes and other organizations within the Fraser Valley. Due to the virus, we chose to cancel our annual event. This year we want to financially support our communities. Our plan is to raise $40,000 by November 11th to support 16 organizations. This money is for socks, gloves and other necessary items. $25,000 will go towards a homeless shelter for the homeless community. We have raised $9500. Thank you for your support! Check out our GoFundMe page http://gf.me/u/y43z4g | For more information see our Facebook page www.facebook.com/cozycovers.

iving and working in northern BC for five years was a very enjoyable experience for me. However, despite all of the positives of living up north, my family and I missed our relatives, friends, cultural activities and of course, our community. By 1973 our community had changed drastically. Vancouver’s Main Street, between 48th and 52nd avenues, had become an attractive shopping centre for the South Asian community. A variety of businesses had sprung up there. As our community grew so did these businesses. People from all over would make it a point to visit the popular “Punjabi Market”, as this section of Main Street became known. Naturally, my family and I also had an urge to move closer to Vancouver. Thus, it was a pleasant surprise for me when I received a job offer to teach in Lillooet. This small yet historic “B.C’s Little Nugget” is less than four hours by car from Vancouver.

My Journey to Canada: Lillooet

After spending the summer with my brother and family in Vancouver, my family and I made our way to Lillooet in order to begin my teaching job at Cayoosh Elementary School in September, 1973. The town, at that time had a bustling saw mill –Evans Forest Products, one of the main employers in town. Also, there were other major employers like BC Forest Service, BC Rail, Government Agent’s Office, Court and others. Lillooet is the regional centre for surrounding communities and the Aboriginal community. Tucked between Fraser River on one side and the mountains on the other, this community has an ideal and very scenic setting.

“Guaranteed Rugged”, Lillooet is a great place to visit. A circuitous route provides the visitor with unique view. A visitor can travel to Lillooet by taking Highway Number1 through Hope, Yale, Boston Bar and Lytton. The Fraser Canyon offers a very impressive view of the Fraser River Canyon,

the mountains and a lot more. The return visit through a very scenic Duffy Lake route through Pemberton, Whistler and Squamish is amazing and beautiful.

Lillooet is a historic town. It is mile 0 of the Gold Rush Trail to Barkerville. During the gold rush days of 1850s, Lillooet was a flourishing community. It has a very rich First Nations heritage, gold rush and mining history. This area’s unspoiled mountains, valleys and lakes are a delight for the visitors to enjoy. The Lillooet area was home to the jade mine. It has been reported that in late 1950s and early 1960s, Lillooet shipped more nephrite jade worldwide than any other place on earth. Lillooet’s Golden Mile of History takes one from Bridge of 23 Camels to BC Railway Station, Lillooet Museum, Mile 0 Cairn, The Mining Rocks, The Miyazaki House, Town Hall, Hangman’s Tree Park, The Camel Barn, Ma Murray’s Old Newspaper Office and the Old Bridge. This Golden Mile through downtown Lillooet gives the visitor an impressive view of this community’s historic past. When my family and I arrived in Lillooet, we were welcomed amongst others, by a number of members of our community. There were around 30 Punjabi families living in Lillooet at that time. The men folks were employed at the local lumber mill. Thus, it was a very pleasant surprise to see them. Lillooet’s mayor at that time was member of a Punjabi pioneer family. Johnder Basran must be one of a few Punjabis, after Mission’s Naranjan Singh Grewal to have that distinction. Basran and I became good friends and worked to-gether on a number of projects designed to serve the community. As a matter of fact, it was Basran who encouraged

PAGE 6

Friday, November 6th, 2020

me to become actively involved in the community. Within less than two years of my arrival in Lillooet, he convinced me to seek election as an Alderman (City Councillor). Thus, it was an honour for me to be elected to the Municipal Council. As a member of Lillooet’s Municipal Council from mid 1970s to 1990, I had the privilege of spearheading a number of initiatives including a campaign to save the Old Bridge from demolition. This historic structure, built in 1911, is a major landmark of the community. It is very satisfying to learn that to date, this bridge has been serving as a popular tourist attraction for locals and visitors alike. Also, with the support and encouragement of my fellow councillors at that time, I had the honour of initiating and leading the yearly celebration of Lillooet Days. The Lillooet Days festivities have been transformed into Apricot Tsaquam Days which is now celebrated towards the end of July.

Blood Donation by Sikh Nation

5

Since 2007

E

very November a blood donation campaign known as “Blood Donation by Sikh Nation” takes place across the world, with the objective of saving lives

the lives lost in the state sponsored genocide in 1984, where Sikhs were victims to brutal violence and aggression all across India. The aim of the event is to not only remember the

whilst standing against hate. This movement came to fruition in the year of 1999, starting in the beautiful country of Canada and slowly spreading across the globe. The campaign offers an opportunity to remember

loss of innocent lives, but to create a united front against all violence and hate. A common expression is “blood is thicker than water”, we all have blood running through our veins and by donating we are creating a bond

“BRIDGING COMMUNITIES

with each other and together we stand in the face of oppression while saving lives. The Blood Donation Campaign represents a look to the past and a view to the future, coming together as humans around the world. As of December 2019, this campaign has saved more than 150,000 lives within Canada; helping humanity regardless of race, economic status or any other societal factor. The Sikh Blood Donation Campaign is a volunteer operated campaign which expresses peace and invites people around the world to participate in this humanitarian campaign. 2020 is a year like no other, as the world has been introduced to the Covid-19 virus. This pandemic is responsible for shutting down the world, but it will not shut down the Blood Donation by Sikh Nation Campaign. As always Canada is in need of blood and it is the obligation of the campaign to provide once again. Covid-19 may have slowed down the world, but it has done the opposite for blood donors, who are now more eager to be donating blood. The blood donation campaign will continue even in these tough times,

as donation is a key pillar in the Sikh faith. The question for 2020 isn’t whether the campaign will continue or not, rather it is how the campaign will be different. In the previous years the campaign was on a walk-in basis, where a gathering of donors was present, this year however, due to Covid-19 the campaign has been organized on an appointment-based structure. Working with Canadian Blood Services, the campaign is taking all of the necessary precautions to ensure that the safety of donors and the CBS staff isn’t compromised. The Blood Donation by Sikh Nation campaign is working shoulder to shoulder with CBS and prides itself in doing so. CBS has created a platform on their website on which donors can schedule their appointments according to their availability. Volunteers of the campaign will be working around the clock to book appointments for donors. Appointments will be adequately separated so that there is enough time to sanitize and clean stations in between. Safety is a priority, which will not be compromised.

Smart Planning for the Future is Very Important and the insurance agent should be able to reach you in a timely manner. It will be possible only if they have your updated address, contact number and email. Always keep your contact details updated with the Insurance Company and the bank.

Life is transitory/uncertain. We don’t know what future has in store for us. It is important to make our family secure by taking necessary steps for our family after we cease to exist. This will ensure that our loved ones are protected from financial and legal problems during the time/emergence of any unforeseeable circumstance. By taking below mentioned necessary steps we can get our affairs in order by having Life insurance, disability insurance and critical illness insurance, which may save your family from any financial crisis even you are not there to protect them. Also, if you are working in a field involving physical risk it is essential that you purchase coverage for disability insurance. If by chance, the insurance premiums cannot be deducted from your bank account due to nonsufficient funds or any kind of technical reason/error, in order to keep your policy active, there is a grace period. After that grace period, your policy becomes voided and necessary steps need to be taken to reinstate it. In this situation, it is very essential that the insurance company PAGE 14

True Fit Dental in Newton quickly recognized the struggle that many of their customers had during the past few months. They were unable to visit due to living in seniors facilities or merely struggling to leave the house. Sarwar Sarwari had the solution. “I always strive to be one step ahead, thinking about how to improve and make our service accessible to everyone in need. The idea of a mobile service was emerging in my head and slowly shaping from a dream to a concrete plan. Little did I know it would happen much faster than intended. Today, we are steadily adjusting to new ways of being as we are pushed out of our comfort zones. My dream became a reality, and I am very excited about Sure Fit (the True Fit mobile van) bringing smiles to those unable to visit our True Fit clinic for various reasons. Sure Fit is a fully equipped clinic on wheels. Our team of professionals is perfectly capable of delivering services to patients at the convenience of their own homes, care homes, hospitals, and remote locations. Thoroughly following required health standards, by bringing Sure Fit to our patients, we try to eliminate their exposure to high-risk surroundings as much as possible without compromising the quality of the services provided. This is my helping hand to everyone and my community, and I feel very blessed with this opportunity. And don’t we all need more smiles today and every day? Let’s keep bringing them to everyone.”

SURREY DENTURIST GOES MOBILE Registered denturist Sarwar Sarwari, of True Fit Denture Centre, has had the van up and running for a month Registered denturist Sarwar Sarwari has had the idea for a mobile denture clinic, but COVID-19 “expedited” that idea this year. Sarwari, who owns True Fit Denture Centre in Newton, said he’s been going to care homes for appointments, but as the coronavirus

PAGE 21

pandemic hit, that all changed. “But because of COVID, obviously, we’re not allowed to go into care homes,” said Sarwari. “Those people who were in dire, or desperate, need of a essential services, we can’t go in because we didn’t have a solution.” He said cross-contamination became an issue if he was visiting multiple residents or facilities. Then Sarwari went back to his idea of going mobile. “What if we bring the patient out – we can’t bring him here (to the office) – so we come to them,” he explained. “It keeps the number of COVID potentials down. That’s number one because that’s our demographic. Our demographic is elderly, the most vulnerable of our society.” It took Sarwari about three months to get the van, retrofit it and set it up as a mobile denture clinic. Sarwari said the van has been on the road for about a month now, and he’s made visits to three facilities with it. Originally, Sarwari said he wanted five vans on the road, but it would have been a “huge undertaking.” He said he’s now got two other vans on standby, with this first one working as a pilot project. Asked when he could potentially see another van up and running, Sarwari said he would know by Christmas. He said it comes down to three things: Is the van fulfilling the need?; Does it make monetary sense?; and how will this second wave of the virus impact government protocols? If businesses or operations start to shut down again, Sarwari said, “we might have to expedite that and be on the wheels in three different places.” But so far, Sarwari said the mobile denture clinic is serving its goal, which was to “be a helping hand” to those who couldn’t come to him.

WSO CONCERNED BY RENEWED CENSORSHIP OF SIKH SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT

T

he World Sikh Organization of Canada is deeply concerned by renewed attempts to censor Sikh content on social media platforms. Dozens of Sikh social media pages and posts have been censored on Facebook and Instagram over the past 24 hours. This censorship campaign coincides with the commemoration of the 1984 Sikh Genocide. An earlier campaign to censor Sikh content took place in June 2020, as Sikhs commemorated the June 1984 Indian army assault on the Sri Darbar Sahib complex. In the current wave of censorship, content related to the Khalistan movement and prominent historical figures in the movement has been targeted in addition to posts critical of the Government of India. A new direction or new position taken by somebody else could make you feel left out in some way. It could also be that they will become more assertive in a subtle way when it comes to commitments expected of you. This could make you realise that the time has come for you to reassess your own situation up to mid November.

The opportunity to come to an agreement can arise but you need to be prepared for the other party to either change their mind or want to alter something about it, not that far down the track. For this reason you should not take any chances, hoping for the best. There is too much that is not obvious just yet, so be patient.

Something you have needed to be detailed about since late September can now reach a turning point in which you could realise a more balanced way of creating a well-structured situation. It can be a challenge to ensure you are able to maintain some level of enjoyment when a lot of pressure is applied for just the opposite.

Attempting to put something new in place at home or in relation to family matters can generate reactions you didn’t necessarily expect. It will certainly bring things out into the open and you will know what you are dealing with. Not that this needs to daunt you or put you off. You are quite capable of creating ways around it.

There could be something from the past that you will consider re-establishing especially if you feel present ideas will be difficult to carry forward in the future. The amount of time and work something generates may get you thinking about better ways around it. This might need to happen in stages rather than all at once.

Matters involving finances may need to take a new direction. This might be generated as a result of greater insight as to someone else’s expectations. You need to resist any pressure to take risks. It will be through you seeking out information for yourself that you will eventually gain a sense of peace and security.

The New Moon this week falls into your own sign. It will encourage you to look at the way your life has become structured, especially in the last 3 years and its value to you personally. Anything you think needs changing doesn’t have to be acted on instantly but it is important you make some decisions by the end of the year.

Don’t be surprised to find yourself changing your mind on something you thought was a certainty since late September. This could have a lot to do with matters that are out of your hands. Best just to step back and see what presents itself up to mid November. It will be from then until early December decisions can become final.

Any new directions taking place that involves a group of people or perhaps a friend could certainly present some challenges. Amongst them can be some similarity to something that has happened before. If this entails any risk to financial security you need to tread carefully. Be careful of convincing yourself just because you want it.

You could take a new approach to something that was important to accomplish, especially if you have experienced greater personal pressure than you originally anticipated. Generating more time for pleasure in the future could now become a priority. Not that all responsibility will be dropped but it can be tempered.

It can seem there is a driving force to set new goals for the future though exactly how that can be managed will not be clear. You could gain some insight into the expectations of somebody else and opportunities this could provide for you. Being in a position to move forward and make definite decisions won’t come until early December.

You could feel your priorities are not being considered when it comes to the desires of somebody else. They could feel it is time to make a new start or move forward, especially if money is involved in some way. You are not in a powerful position when it comes to resisting and you need to be sure you are not being unrealistic.

Asian giant hornet found in Abbotsford

bbotsford-area beekeepers and residents are being asked to report if they see any Asian giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia), following the discovery of one hornet in the 7000 block of Bradner Road on Monday, Nov. 2, 2020. Though Asian giant hornet activity declines rapidly as colder temperatures arrive, people are encouraged to report possible findings. This can be done through calling the Invasive Species Council of BC at 1 888 933-3722, via the council’s Report Invasives mobile phone app or at: https://bcinvasives. ca/report Single hornets were found in White Rock and Langley in 2019, and on 0 Avenue in Langley in 2020. A nest has never been found in the Fraser Valley or Lower Mainland. Survey efforts in the Fraser Valley in 2020 have focused on surveillance and trap monitoring along 0 Avenue with the support of local beekeepers and oth-

PAGE 30

er organizations, as well as in Nanaimo, where a nest was located and destroyed in 2019. In October 2020, Washington State Department of Agriculture entomologists eradicated an Asian giant hornet nest following multiple findings of single hornets in the same area of Blaine. A sting from an Asian giant hornet can be very painful and cause localized swelling, redness and itching due to the larger amount of venom injected. However, the hornets are not interested in humans, pets and large animals. Asian giant hornets hunt insects for food and will only attack people when their nest is disturbed.
