PLEASE SUPPORT!! For the past 15 years Cozy Covers has held an annual event for a clothing drive and over 15,000 items have been donated to various shelters, transition homes and other organizations within the Fraser Valley. Due to the virus, we chose to cancel our annual event. This year we want to financially support our communities. Our plan is to raise $40,000 by November 11th to support 16 organizations. This money is for socks, gloves and other necessary items. $25,000 will go towards a homeless shelter for the homeless community. We have raised $9500. Thank you for your support! Check out our GoFundMe page http://gf.me/u/y43z4g | For more information see our Facebook page www.facebook.com/cozycovers.

The number of uninsured people forced to skip their medications is growing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and as more people work on contract, are self-employed, or have jobs that just don't come with health benefits. Workplaces are improving – what to watch for in 2021 (NC) The pandemic has changed the way many of us work, but it’s just one of the factors transforming what tomorrow’s office buildings, factories and other in-person workspaces will look like. Here are some trends to keep an eye out for: Wellness: Whether you’re doing double duty as a parent and full-time employee or trying to distance your “work space from your “home space, work-life balance has become an even bigger challenge for many of us. But some organizations are making it easier for you to juggle it all. From flexible hours and on-site fitness centres to private pods for breastfeeding and sitstand desks with timers to encourage movement, work is becoming a place that supports not just your wallet but your overall well-being. Accessibility: As our society begins to realize the true benefits of diversity, our workplaces are becoming more physically accessible to better accommodate employees and guests with varying levels of mobility. Eco-friendly: Tackling climate change and minimizing carbon footprints are major goals for most organizations, and there’s no better place to start than in the workplace itself. Features like motion-controlled LED lighting, rainwater collection and drought-resistant landscaping are becoming more common at corporate facilities across the country.

My Journey to Canada: My Move from Lillooet to Richmond

L

eaving a community where my family had lived for 17 years was rather a difficult decision. However, due to a number of reasons, we had to make the move to Metro Vancouver. My family and I had built strong bonds and relationships with the residents in Lillooet. After spending 23 years in three of BC’s small communities, returning to Metro Vancouver, we had mixed feelings. Of course, during these 23 years spent outside Metro Vancouver, my family and I would visit Vancouver frequently due to one reason or other. However, moving to Richmond and working in Burnaby was extremely exciting and challenging. Our older son Barinder was all set to start his post-secondary education at UBC. Our younger son Balraj (Bobby) began his grade 10 at Richmond High School. I would start commuting from my Richmond home to Maples Adolescent Centre (The Maples) at the intersection of Willingdon and Canada Way in Burnaby. It was quite a change from a short walk to my workplaces in Hudson’s Hope and Lillooet. The Maples was run by the Provincial Health Ministry. However, the educational services there were provided by Burnaby School District at this Provincial Resource Program. As a school psychologist I thoroughly enjoyed myself working there for the next fourteen years. Though my family and I were away from Metro Vancouver for almost 23 years, yet, we would visit our relatives, friends and others here from time to time. However, living in this part of the province on a regular basis was quite a different experience. The demographics of Canada in general and BC in particular had undergone a major shift. Metro Vancouver had become very multicultural and multilingual during this time. The South Asian community in general and Punjabis in particular had become a major presence. Over the years, Sur-

rey had become a major centre for our community. Surrey’s Scott Road area and later 128 Street had become our major shopping, cultural and religious centres. This growth continues. Another major development for the Punjabi community in Metro Vancouver was the start of Nagar Kirtans by our Gurdwaras. The first major Nagar Kirtan was held by Khalsa Diwan Society, Vancouver to celebrate Vaisakhi and birth of the Khalsa in 1979. Free food, free drinks and other goodies for the spectators have made theses religious celebrations very attractive and enjoyable. More than 100,000 well-wishers come out to enjoy themselves every year in the Vancouver Nagar Kirtan. A few years later, Gurdwara Dasmesh Darbar on 128 Street and 85th Avenue began sponsoring the Nagar Kirtans in Surrey. Soon after that, Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara on Scott Road in Surrey began celebrating the Miri Piri Divas. Now these religious celebrations have become very popular not only in Vancouver and Surrey but also all over BC and Canada. Incidentally, the latest Nagar Kirtan in Surrey held in April 2019 is reported to attract up to half a million devotees. It is con-

Virtual Mediations – What to Expect

Cathy Rizzo Lawyer Simpson, Thomas & Associates ediation can be a great option for resolving your ICBC claim. The goal of mediation is to bring the parties together—including an ICBC representative—to discuss the issues and try to reach settlement, with the guidance of a neutral mediator. Traditionally, “bringing the parties together” meant that everyone was physically in the same room. The technology for virtual mediation has existed for some time, but many ICBC claim lawyers were concerned that the mediation process would lose its effectiveness if not done face-toface. The COVID-19 pandemic forced parties to embrace the use of technology and may have forever changed the way personal mediation session. Increased used of virtual mediation Our experienced ICBC claim lawyers have been using virtual mediations on an increasing number of personal injury claims throughout the year and we have been impressed with the results. Online mediation works and can be just as effective as traditional mediation. In fact, the way mediations run may be forever changed, as online mediation offers some great benefits. For example, online mediation can be less intimidating, allowing an accident victim to do the mediation in the comfort of their own home with loved ones close by, rather than having to go to an unfamiliar office and sit face-to-face strangers dressed in suits.

vent someone else from unexpectedly joining. • Parts of the mediation, including the opening session, will be done with all parties and the mediator in the same virtual “room.” Parties and their legal counsel can then have private, confidential discussions in separate breakout “rooms” as needed, which the mediator can join and “shuttle” between.

It isn't okay to be apologetic to talk about breastfeeding : Neha Dhupia Neha Dhupia is trying to ensure that the conversation around body image of women post-pregnancy, as well as a mother's right to breast freed, doesn't die down. "I've been lucky enough to find safe spaces in hotel bathrooms or someone's house or a trailer to breastfeed (her daughter) Mehr. But there are women, especially in rural areas, that are still grappling with such nuances, and struggling to talk about it. I'm not the first person to speak openly about breastfeeding. There have been others who have blazed a trail before me. But what I've tried to ensure is that the conversation doesn't die down. It's okay to talk about it, or be nervous, or even confused, but it is not okay to be apologetic about it," she said. Neha, who has her podcast NoFilterNeha going, mentioned self-

acceptance is important for every woman to deal with such transformative phase. "Women -- not men or the media -- control the narrative around their bodies during and after pregnancy. I put on 23 kilos after I gave birth to Mehr, but I refused to let society's ideals dictate my recovery. My husband (Angad Bedi) applied zero pressure on me to lose the baby weight. During my recovery and up until now, I've always given myself self-love and self-care. I've only just started dropping the pounds, but I'm okay being curvier too. I accept what my body wants to be," Neha signed off.

Speaking about the fit version of herself, Tanushree Dutta said, "During this period, I was living in the hills in the US. I had no access to Indian ingredients, and would hence eat Europeanstyle meals like soups, salads, and baked fish. For five months, I didn't even have sugar at home and did not consume milk. UFV president Dr. Joanne MacLean named to U SPORTS board of directors

D

r. Joanne MacLean, President and Vice-Chancellor at the University of the Fraser Valley since 2018, has been named to the board of directors for U SPORTS, the national governing body for university sport in Canada. MacLean is the president representative for the Canada West conference on the U SPORTS board, and will serve as treasurer during a two-year term. She is the first UFV president to serve on the U SPORTS board. Canada West’s previous president rep was Dr. Annette Trimbee of MacEwan University. “I am truly honoured to have this opportunity to serve the interuniversity sport community,” MacLean said. “U SPORTS is a tremendous sport organization in Canada, centred around the success of student athletes. It is a great reminder of why I chose to work in higher education. This is truly a chance for me to give back to my roots, and in a way, it feels like I have come full-circle in my career.” In addition to her strong resumé in academics and administration, MacLean’s expertise in the world of sport makes her uniquely qualified for this new role. MacLean spent 11 seasons as women’s basketball head coach at the University of Windsor, winning three Ontario University Athletics (OUA) coach of the year awards, and then went on to serve as athletic director at Windsor for a further six years. She participated as a coach and administrator at three World University Games, and was Canada’s Chef de Mission at the same event in 2003 in South Korea. She has also served on the board of Canada Basketball.

her undergraduate and master’s degrees in physical education at the University of New Brunswick in her hometown of Fredericton. She holds a PhD from Ohio State University, where she studied human resource management in sport and recreation, and administration in higher education. MacLean is the author of two books and over 70 peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and her research interests include human resources and performance management, sport governance, and the Canadian sport system. She was named a Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management in 2009. “We are thrilled that Joanne has been appointed to the U SPORTS board of directors,” said Steve Tuckwood, UFV director of athletics and campus recreation. “She has been in every role, from student athlete to coach to athletics administrator, to senior university leadership. She is wellpositioned to understand the challenges and opportunities for student athletes participating in U SPORTS.”

MacLean’s academic pursuits are also closely linked to sport. She earned For a complete listing of U SPORTS board members, visit usports.ca. PAGE 22

An opinion expressed or a demand that might have been made in early October but went nowhere could suddenly re-emerge and be finalised. There can be all sorts of challenges or expectations coming from others. They could simply be pushing you to find out where you stand and what you are prepared to make a commitment to.

An interesting conversation can arise with someone else. They could bring up a subject you thought you had dodged or escaped from. The difference now is that they will be looking for something to take a new direction. This could leave you in a situation of having to carefully analyse all the avenues you can take in the future.

Something you needed to pay attention to and perhaps unexpectedly in early October can now arise again, perhaps unexpectedly. This could be associated with health, general well being or daily routines. The opinion of other people could be involved and that is likely to be in a good way, providing a path to new beginnings.

A situation you have been working at putting into place to create greater underlying peace or security can move ahead at a very steady pace from one thing to another. It could be that you will finally get an agreement you have been looking for. This could be combined with you taking a bit of a risk with something new to you.

You should carefully weigh up the amount of work involved when it comes to making a decision to change the way something has been structured for a long time. Freeing yourself up to some degree is a much better choice than suddenly taking on a situation that is out of the ordinary but seems to provide a new start.

A decision you needed to make unexpectedly in early October could now present itself again. Other facts may have emerged in between time that will now enable you to see a new way of finalising things. You should not take any risks when it comes to financial commitments. There is more than one way to work around this.

You are in an excellent position to weigh up the best way to put a good foundation in place that will enable you to move into enjoying life a bit more from next year after having this underlying seriousness for the last 3 years. It would not be wise though to be convinced to make snap decisions when it comes to finances though.

The New Moon will be in your sign, very likely giving you the sense that something needs to change and that new directions need to be taken. This can be a 2 to 3 year process. Don’t be distracted by any unpredictable behaviour of somebody else or them rebelling. Your focus needs to be intently applied to your own situation.

New opportunities can be developing behind the scenes. If there is something you thought about finishing in early October but nothing came of it, you could either get a second chance or completely different ideas can suddenly emerge. Most important is to not lose sight of your wishes and what you can really afford to do.

New things that you didn’t expect could start to become important, especially if it means you can enjoy yourself more. This will probably mean you will need to free some time up for yourself when it comes to what has normally required your attention. This could prove to be quite a balancing act but one you can deal with.

Don’t take on any new responsibilities on impulse. There is a strong underlying desire for life to change and you could have a sudden insight on what is possible but burdening yourself is not the way you should go. You could sense the long- term future holds promise of greater peace or security. It does. Patience is required.

Future plans that you either first conceived in early October or attempted to put in place without complete success can now suddenly present as a real possibility. Coupled with this is something new which could have a lot to do with feeling more rock solid about what your priorities are and putting in whatever effort is necessary.
