Abbotsford Community Leaders Provide 100 Hampers of Essential South Asian Food to the Archway Food Bank

W

hen the economic impact of COVID-19 first hit in early summer, many families in Abbotsford were struggling to put food on their tables. This is when an independent group of local community leaders and volunteers came together to fundraise and deliver food to those who were the most vulnerable to the pandemic. “We collected a significant amount of food and delivered what remained to the Abbotsford Food Bank who helped distribute it amongst those who needed it the most” said Dave Sidhu, general manager of the Patrika Media. After a couple months of their donation, the group was contacted by Archway Food Bank Community Partnerships director, Matt Loewen, who expressed the urgent need of culture appropriate food items for South Asian families. “With more and more families feeling the economic impact of COVID-19,

many of them are turning to the Abbotsford Food Bank, and although the food bank never turns anyone away, there is a lack of groceries such as “Aata” flour, lentils and other staples that South Asian Families are used to” said community leader Markus Delves of Quantum Properties. The group re-assembled and joined forces with Carl Jamieson of Abbotsford Maximum Collision who collected and donated over $4000 with help from local businesses including The Honda Way, Curtis Tire, Taylor of Split Red Lentils, and 4Kg bag of Insurance, Fraser Valley Cresting, Yellow Lentils. Bigfoot Crane Company, & Atlas “We are grateful for the support we Sign and Awning. are receiving. Rice, 1 L of Cooking Oil, 4Kg bag

The group hopes to continue efforts in providing culturally appropriate food for families. They are hoping that other local businesses take inspiration from their donation and come forward to support their community. “There is more to be done,” says Jag Khangura of Abbotsford Maximum Collision, “I would urge everyone to donate to the food bank as there are many families that are in desperate need of food.”

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, For the last few months, the farmers of India have been engaged in a very serious struggle for their survival. The historic agitation/protests against the Indian Government’s Farm Laws are a clear reflection of the frustration, anger and concerns of farmers. It is first peaceful agitation of its kind at such a large scale in post independent India led by farmers from Punjab and Haryana. The farmers are fighting for their very survival. These laws, if implemented in their current form, will give big agro business conglomerates control over agricultural produce. These laws would exempt the corporate families from state level regulation, licensing, stocking, processing and marketing of agricultural produce. Consequently, the farmers’ protest has attracted wide spread support. Also, sympathizers with the farmers’ cause around the globe have enthusiastically come out in their support. In this context, the protests all over the world, including Canada, are very much appreciated by the protesting farmers in and around New Delhi in India.

There is no doubt that changes and improvements are required in India’s agricultural marketing system for the benefit of millions of small farmers. Most of them own less than five acres. However, these Farm Acts do not serve that purpose and may do more harm than good to them. These Laws pave the way for large corporate farming. What the farmers need is a system that will enable them to have better bargaining power and expanded involvement in the value chain through storage, processing and marketing infrastructure. In view of the on-going protests against these Laws the government has offered to amend them. However, the farmers want these three Laws repealed and work from scratch to remedy the situation. The farmers and their supporters have been suffering for long. It is about time for the Indian government to accede to their demands and move on. Sincerely, Balwant Sanghera Richmond, BC

Help pave the future at UFV If the University of the Fraser Valley helped shape your life’s path, you are invited to pay it forward by helping to pave the future of UFV. The university is currently planning a revitalization of its entrance way between Buildings A and B on the Abbotsford campus, making it a more welcoming and accessible environment. It will feature attractive landscaping, bench seating, and a new plaza featuring custom-engraved paving stones. Alumni, past donors, and those who believe in the transformative power of education are invited to order a paving stone to commemorate their relationship with UFV. Proceeds from paving stone orders will go toward toward bursaries and scholarships that are supported by the Alumni Association. “We know that UFV holds a special connection for many members of our community. his holiday season is challenging for everyone, and post-secondary students have a free, 24-7 counselling and referral service available to them through Here2Talk. “The holidays will look different this year, and we remain committed to providing the supports students have called for to ensure they are addressing any mental health issues, as they arise,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “It’s OK to not feel OK and there is help available 24-7 because loneliness, stress, anxiety and mental health needs aren’t on a schedule.” Here2Talk is a free mental health counselling and referral service that provides year-round, 24-7 mental health support services for all B.C. post-secondary students regardless of whether they live in Canada or abroad. CuwtIaF mubfrk! TIPS TO STAY MENTALLY WELL DURING COVID-19 Many sacrifices are being made during the pandemic to help bend the curve of COVID-19. This prolonged period of physical distancing and social disconnection, especially during the holiday season, has left many stressed and lonely. “It’s normal to feel anxious and afraid. Some of us are struggling more than others. We have to recognize that none of us are the same person we were prior to the pandemic,” says Dr. Marietta Van Den Berg, psychiatrist and physician quality lead for Fraser Health. “But, we have to remember we are not the first generation to experience a pandemic, crisis or war, and we will get through this together.”

First, the United Kingdom (UK) voted and officially left the European Union (EU) in January, 2020, leaving itself open to a rise in tariffs on imported goods, and by default, inflation (The Balance, 2020). Second, in tandem with this “British Exit”, Ambani is expected to offer a” $20 billion stake in retail” to Amazon, a corporation that has made most of its revenue in India off of its online grocery stores (Bloomberg Quint, 2020).Taking the listed events into consideration, it seems as if the only people who stand to greatly benefit from the privatization of India’s long-standing public grain market are corporations like Amazon, their investors and countries looking to secure cheap goods. Both countries’ predicaments and Amazon’s presence in both countries then goes on to explain the UK’s new found focus on strengthening it’s trade “partnership” with India, as a relationship between the UK, Ambani and corporate grocers like Amazon will result directly in affordable goods lining the shelves of UK stores. All the while, the three black bills passed by congress will make the lives of Indian farmers hell on earth, as there will be no safeguards in place to ensure that ALL farmers are (a) protected from contracts with “land grab” clauses, (b) are guaranteed a “living wage” and (c) are able to maintain/use sustainable farming practices.

I feel lucky and privileged : Sara

Bollywood GenNext star Sara Ali Khan is happy with the way her career is going. Ever since her debut in the 2018 release Kedarnath, she has worked with bigwigs such as Abhishek Kapoor, Rohit Shetty and Imtiaz Ali, and she is all set to end the year 2020 with the David Dhawan directorial Coolie No. 1 opposite Varun Dhawan. The film is a remake of 1995 hit of the same name starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. "I feel lucky and privileged. I think films are a director's medium and you are as good as your director, and I have luckily had the opportunity to work with extremely versatile and amazing directors," said Sara, daughter of Bollywood stars Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh. The 25-year-old actress added: "I will

only say that I am thankful and grateful. I hope I keep getting opportunities to work with creative people like I have." Coming up after Coolie No. 1 is Aanand L. Rai's Atrangi Re. Sara stars with Akshay Kumar and Dhanush in the romantic drama.

Broke down while filming intense shot : Nushrratt Bharuccha

After winning praise for her act in Chhalaang, Nushrratt Bharuccha has shifted gears to horror with Chhori. The movie, directed by Vishal Furia, is adapted from his Marathi hit Lapachhapi (2017), which had a pregnant woman driving the narrative. Shooting for the film that addresses age-old societal beliefs and practices hasn't been emotionally easy for the actor."I broke down on the sets yesterday while shooting for an intense scene. When the director said cut, he was surprised to see me crying and came running to check on me. I don't know whether it was exhaustion of the past many months or simply my emotions [getting the better of me], but I couldn't stop crying," reveals Bharuccha.Though she is thrilled to add a horror mystery to her resume, the actor admits she can't sit through films belonging to the genre. "Whenever a scary scene is playing out, I cover my eyes. I want to know the story and how it ends, but I can't handle the scary visuals. So, it was a huge challenge for me to pick Chhori."

Bollywood debutante and former beauty queen Manushi Chhillar wants to turn her terrace into a sustainable garden because she thinks the future of complex, modern society lies in environmentally friendly living. "I want to have a fully sustainable garden at my home because I think the future of complex, modern society will be all about self-sustenance and environmental-friendly living. I have started planting different kinds of trees at my home and I can't wait to see it all come together," she said."My dream garden is actually at a very nascent stage currently and it will take months of work for me to slowly bring it together," Manushi added, giving a sneak peek of her home garden.Manushi, who is a vegetarian, wants to grow fruits and vegetables in her home garden. "Since I'm a vegetarian, this garden will definitely be at play for a 'home garden to table' concept of living. I want to grow several varieties of fruits and vegetables in the near future and I'm quite excited to take on this

If Anil Kapoor had his way, he would have joined forces with Anurag Kashyap in the early 2000. But the universe had its own plan — his wish has been fulfilled this year as they share screen space in Netflix's black comedy, AK vs AK that sees the actor and the filmmaker play themselves. The Vikramaditya Motwane-directed film has Kapoor in desperate search of daughter Sonam after Kashyap abducts her. In the mockumentary's trailer, Kapoor is seen asking Kashyap to make a film with him. Ask the actor if he has ever reached out to a filmmaker for work, and he says, "I am a hungry

journey of learning more about organic, sustainable living," she said. Manushi is all set to break into Bollywood with the Akshay Kumar starrer "Prithviraj", based on the life of Prithviraj Chauhan. The film is directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, who helmed the television epic "Chanakya" and the period d r a m a "Pinjar".

Most of the biggest stars today are outsiders; only good work and talent sell : Tamannaah Bhatia Tamannaah Bhatia says that the nepotism debate that has plagued the film fraternity does not bother her. The actress in her recent interview opened up on the ongoing insider vs outsider debate in the film industry, saying, "It doesn't matter if you're from the industry or not." In an interview, Tamannaah said, "Yes, I'm not from the industry, I don't have a godfather or a mentor. I've done everything on my own. I feel extremely grateful for the kind of opportunities, love and adulation I've got from the audience. It was something I never expected. So if you're dedicated, hardworking and talented, you'll survive. Good efforts count." She adds, "Luckily I

actor. There have been times when I have told a director that I want to work with him, and he has misunderstood it, thinking, 'Iska time kharab chal raha hai. Iss liye kaam maang raha hai.' I have smiled through such situations, knowing that my call fed his ego. On other occasions, if a filmmaker is new, he may not know how to approach a star. In such cases, one can break the ice by approaching him. Either way, I don't have an ego. If I find a good director, I will go up to him."In a classic case of art imitating life, the senior actor shares that he had, in fact, reached out to Kashyap during the latter's early days. "I had the honour of giving the mahurat clap for Paanch. As soon as I saw the rushes, I shamelessly approached Anurag, and told him that I want to do a film with him. He wrote not one, but two films for me — Allwyn Kalicharan and Grand Hotel. Unfortunately, neither of the movies was made. Then, I pursued him to write the dialogues for Nayak [2003]."

got a film like Baahubali that still is one of the biggest hit films in India. I feel it doesn't matter if you're from the industry or not. In fact today, more than ever, it's a great time for everyone, especially outsiders because of the kind of content being generated and work is being distributed purely on the basis of talent. I think being an insider doesn't promise you more than an opportunity. Most of the biggest stars today are outsiders. Only good work and talent sell." Tamannaah Bhatia also spoke about her views on the casting couch and the Bollywood drug nexus controversy. She said, "As I said, the film industry is an easy target... All sectors of work have problems. In fact, I feel actors are far more responsible and aware because they are always in the public eye. It makes them more socially aware and responsible. So celebrities are way more careful." Bhatia is a successful actor both in the north and the south. In Hindi, she made her debut in 2013 with Himmatwala and went on to do films like Humshakals, Entertainment, and Khamoshi. Tamannaah will be seen alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Bole Chudiyan

You are entering the next stage with something that took a new direction in late March. Much has likely changed in that time that could now see you questioning the level of responsibility you are prepared to take on. This could also be an opportunity for moving to a higher position. Priorities have altered in some way.

There has been a major shift when it comes commitments. Not all will necessarily be clear just yet because much can still be going on behind the scenes. It would be wise to contemplate just how much you are prepared to handle long term. That way you will be better prepared for opportunities that can come up without warning.

You can feel as though you have moved on, or need to, from heavy expectations placed on you by others. It will be easier for you to recognise where your own priorities and their expectations cause you problems. Be straightforward about what you want. The response you get will give you a clear idea of their true ideas.

More activity on a daily basis with others will be the case from now to early January. There could be some selfishness on their part, so be careful about the level of responsibility you could automatically take on. It is up to you to set some boundaries. This is something you will have to get used to for the next 3 years.

Major changes of direction involving other people in a substantial way are just beginning to take shape in your life. You could experience being recognised more because others are serious or prepared to make a commitment. It would be wise of you to consider, from now to early January, the level of independence you wish to maintain.

Now is the time to give serious consideration to something you would like to dramatically alter, mainly for pleasure or greater relaxation in the long term. There could be many details to work on for the next 3 years, as well as perhaps altering what have been daily routines. You will realise who it won’t please by early January.

New directions connected to other people that began around late March that have had an impact on you is now entering into a new stage that will become much clearer. It may not be easy to get your mind around it to begin with. It could make you realise that you need to make your own decisions based on what you will enjoy.

You have entered quite a serious cycle for the next 3 years when it comes to what is important to underpin your life. This can include family or your home. Any changes you have had to make to normal routines since July could be part of it. Something you may never have had to deal with before though, is rebellion from somebody else.

Something you expect to enjoy may not run smoothly. For this reason, you should not be tempted to spend more money than is absolutely necessary, especially if somebody else expects it. Taking communication in a social situation to a changed level than usual or generating different topics to discuss could work out very well.

Mercury, the planet of thought and communication has moved into your sign where it will remain until 8th January. This will likely see you thinking about the changes that have taken place in your life over the last 3 years. As a result, you can feel driven right now to lay down new foundations that will give you greater control.

Life has now set out on a path of major new directions on a personal level as you have just begun a new 30 year cycle, a new 12 year cycle, with a new 20 year cycle kicking in this week. You need to think about what is important to structure in your life from now to early January. You now have greater mental determination than ever.

You are going to have to get used to many things happening at a slow pace. You will get a window of opportunity to move things forward from mid May to late July next year. You should put any alternative ideas forward this week but be prepared to deal with challenges. This might be connected to finances in some way.

Quiche with Bacon and Broccoli

Easy Caramel French Toast Submitted by: Mary Marlowe Leverette Readers.com Customer

Submitted by: Meggan of Culinary Hill www.culinaryhill.com

“This is my go-to breakfast dish when family gathers for the holidays.

“For as long as I can remember, my mom has prepared Quiche

I don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is visiting

with Bacon and Broccoli for brunch on Christmas morning. It’s the only time of the year that she makes it, and nothing puts me

or opening gifts, so I came up with this recipe that can be made ahead. And the caramel topping means no syrup is required!”

in the spirit of the season more than eating this dish. The best part? It’s only five ingredients! Serve with fresh fruit and leftover Christmas cookies for the perfect holiday brunch!”

Ingredients:

Ingredients: Serves 8 people

1 c. firmly packed light brown sugar

1 pkg. crescent rolls

1 c. butter

12 eggs

2 Tbsp. light corn syrup

1 lb. bacon, fried and crumbled

12 1-inch thick French bread slices

1 c. chopped frozen broccoli, thawed

6 large eggs, beaten

12 oz. Velveeta cheese, cut into ¼-inch thick slices

1 ½ c. milk 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract ¼ tsp. salt

Directions:

Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat an 8½x11 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Unroll crescent rolls over the bottom of the pan to form a crust. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs until beaten. Pour over crescent rolls. Sprinkle bacon and broccoli evenly over the top of the eggs. Cover with slices of Velveeta cheese. Bake for 50 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean. The quiche should be lightly browned and puffy. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Combine sugar, butter, and corn syrup in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat until smooth and thickened, stirring constantly. Coat a 13x9x2-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Pour butter mixture into the dish. Fit bread slices tightly into the dish, trimming if necessary. In a medium bowl, combine eggs, milk, vanilla, and salt, whisking together well. Pour egg mixture over bread. Cover and refrigerate for 8 hours. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes or until lightly browned. Slice into sections and serve upside down. Garnish with whipped cream or whipped butter.

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

1 c. whole wheat pastry flour (Bob’s Red Mill)

Pastry 1 c. flour ½ c. butter 3 Tbsp. powdered sugar

¼ c. packed brown sugar ¼ c. granulated sugar ½ c. butter, room temperature 1 egg

Filling 2 eggs, slightly beaten 1 c. sugar ¼ c. flour ½ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla ¾ c. chopped walnuts ½ c. sweetened coconut, shredded ½ c. quartered maraschino cherries

¼ tsp. almond extract ¼ tsp. vanilla extract ½ c. sliced almonds 1 c. semi-sweet or milk chocolate, chips or baking chocolate (Higher quality chocolate will make your bars more delicious! I used Ghirardelli chocolate chips.)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease an 8x8 square pan with cooking spray. With hands, mix flour, butter, and powdered sugar until smooth. Spread thin in the prepared pan with fingers. Bake about 25 minutes until golden brown. For filling, beat the eggs in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Stir the rest of the filling ingredients into the slightly beaten eggs. Spread over the top of the baked pastry crust. Bake 25-28 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool before slicing into small bars. Enjoy and share with your friends and family!

butter, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract until well combined and mixture resembles cookie dough. Spread mixture into an ungreased 8x8 pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the edges are slightly browned and cool completely. (Make sure the bars are completely cooled or the chocolate will not stick to the crust, and it will create a big mess.) Melt chocolate over a double boiler or in microwave (be careful not to burn chocolate) and spread evenly over cooled crust. Sprinkle with sliced almonds. Let cool completely. Cut into 1x2-inch bars. Enjoy!

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

SUPPORT ABBOTSFORD REGIONAL HOSPITAL AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Fraser Health launches online booking tool for outpatient laboratory service

Starting today, Fraser Health patients can book lab appointments online for 14 locations across the region. This new approach will help to improve patient experience, decrease wait times and reduce the number of people in waiting areas. As COVID-19 continues to impact our communities, the appointment booking tool expedites and simplifies the process for lab appointments. While Fraser Health encourages people to book appointments for outpatient laboratory service online, walk-in appointments are still available. It’s important to note that certain testing services do require an appointment due to special requirements, such as fasting. To book a lab appointment online, visit www.fraserhealth.ca/labs. Appointments can be booked online for the following outpatient laboratory locations:

Outpatient laboratory services do not provide testing for COVID-19. At this time, it is critically important for people living in the Fraser Health region to use the COVID19 assessment tool and get tested as soon as you have COVID19-like symptoms, even mild ones. Please do not wait - book an appointment at one of our test collection centres which are operated in partnership with local Divisions of Family Practice. People living in the Fraser Health region can find information about test collection centres by visiting Fraser Health’s website. To book a COVID-19 testing appointment, complete a COVID-19 test booking form.

Keep family traditions alive (NC) The holidays are here and while this year may feel a bit different, it’s important to keep our family traditions alive. Every family has their own set of traditions t h at h a s b e e n passed down from generation to generation, as well as new ones created each year.

can do you a world of good, So go Many of our customs are centred build that snowman or organize a around food – whether it’s mom’s snowball fight – two great socially decadent chocolate yule log, nana’s distanced activities. You can also savoury sausage rolls, or nonna’s famous cappelletti soup, you don’t have to miss out on those special treats just because our celebrations might need to change.

Let’s go virtual. If you’re unable to gather with friends and family, take your traditions online. Prepare for your virtual get-together by hanging your stockings and decorating your tree. Organize an epic gift exchange and traditional potluck. You can make a few porch drops ahead of jumping online with your crew for some festive cheer. Or you can share your favourite recipes ahead of time so that everyone is able to enjoy the same dishes. Secret’s out of the bag. Secret family recipes are a seasonal staple, but at some point all recipes need to be passed down to the next generation so the traditions can live on. This year, have the keeper of those precious family recipes host a virtual cooking class to walk close family members through the steps so that everyone can still enjoy the coveted dish this year. Keep active. Holidaytime can be stressful and we may be eating a little more than normal, so it’s important to try to maintain regular physical activity. Spending time outside with family

bundle up for a walk around your neighbourhood to see all the twinkling lights or go skating at a local outdoor rink. Sip smart. With multiple virtual events planned you’re likely going to find yourself enjoying foods and beverages with higher sugar content. Eggnog and other festive drinks contain more sugar than you may realize. Enjoy them, but in moderation. Have one of your favourite cocktails, then switch to sparkling water flavoured with fresh fruit and herbs, such as cranberries and rosemary for a festive touch. If you’re looking for more tips and simple ways to boost nutrition, Loblaws registered dietitians are here to help. To book a session to learn how to eat healthier during the holiday season and into the new year visit loblaws.ca/dietitians.
