Get ahead of your seasonal allergies (NC) Spring has sprung, and likely so have your seasonal allergies. There’s never a good time for itchy eyes, constant sneezing, a runny nose and general fogginess, but this year especially, these symptoms may leave people around you to worry that you’re sick.

Cover up when being active outdoors

If you’re among those who might normally be sneezing and coughing your way through the spring and summer, get ahead of those anxiety-ridden and uncomfortable moments by getting to the bottom of what’s causing your allergies before they start.

We carry a lot of pollen into the home with us. Wash your bedding more frequently during spring, summer and fall; keep your windows closed; and remember your pets can track pollen into the house, too.

Check the pollen forecast

Your local Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacist can be your first line of defense. They can help assess your symptoms and recommend an over-the-counter medication or product. If this isn’t enough to kick your symptoms, your pharmacist can write you a prescription for a medication in all provinces except British Columbia and Ontario. If your symptoms are more severe, pharmacists in these provinces can work with your doctor to make sure you have the right treatment option.

Be on top of this, as it can change daily and really affect your symptoms. If you’re planning on exercising, try doing so inside on warm, windy days rather than going for that run. When you’re outside, protect yourself Wear sunglasses or a hat; not only do they look good and block the sun, they also help keep pollen off your body and out of your eyes.

If you’re doing activities like cutting the lawn or gardening, put your mask collection to good use and cover your nose and mouth. Protect yourself from pollen

SUPER SINGH: BHUPINDER SINGH PARMAR

Field Hockey superstar, Bhupinder Singh Parmar, “Super Singh” was once just a little boy with a dream and a passion for his love of the sport. But after much dedication, practicing of his skills, Parmar became one of the most celebrated field hockey players in Hong Kong and across the globe. Parmar was born in Daroli Kalan near the Adampur area of Punjab. He lived in his paternal village of Maiyo Patti, and Jalandhar city until he was about the age of 12. His family then relocated to Hong Kong to be united with his grandfather who had been there since World War II. Hong Kong was a culture shock at first; while adapting to the new lifestyle, Parmar took solace in that he was always able to carry a little piece of home with him when he picked up his field hockey stick. It was what bought him peace amongst the chaos of a new beginning in a completely different country and culture. As he assimilated to the culture of Hong Kong, he began pursuing the sport competitively, and started playing for his school team where he became a distinguished forward and defense player. As the Punjabi and Sikh population grew in Hong Kong, so did the prevalence of the sport of field hockey. As such, Parmar was presented the opportunity to join Khalsa sports club, an adult competitive field hockey association, while he was still in school. “I believe in giving my 100% without worrying about the results” says Parmar. It was this dedication and passion towards the sport that had him practicing several hours a day to perfect his power hits and accuracy, which led him to become one of the most admired players in Hong Kong field hockey history for taking corner penalty shots. Soon, Parmar became a regular in Hong Kong and Southern China

newspapers. His skills were noticed by national hockey officials, which led him to play for the Hong Kong national junior team at the age of 21. Impressed with his penalty corner shots, and power & accuracy hits, it wasn’t long before he moved up to the national senior team to play as a defender. On the senior team, Parmar continued to rise up the ranks. From being featured in magazines and newspapers around the globe, to being referred to as “Supersingh”, and becoming the captain of the national Hong Kong field hockey team, he saw all the glory of an accomplished sportsman. But even then, he stayed grounded and remembered his beginnings, “I was always very proud of playing for my local Khalsa Sports Club and I was always representing my Hong Kong school team at the national levels.” After much success though, Parmar eventually retired from playing the sport after a series of injuries, including severe injuries to his knees during his peak years. The injuries did not keep him away from the sport however, as he continued his passion through becoming an international umpire and umpired at sporting events such as the Asian games in Thailand and the Asia Cup in Malaysia. In 1997, Parmar and his family immigrated to Canada. Here, they focused on building a bright and secure future for their children. While he cannot play the sport professionally anymore, Parmar never shies away from picking up the stick to hit a couple of shots. “My advice to all the youth out there is to pursue their dreams. Play your sport with passion, and give it your all without worrying too much about the results.”

With Ricky Martin on Grammy-nominated song was 'pinch-me : Neha Mahajan

Power with women to change how she's represented : Rani Mukerji Actress Rani Mukerji says the power lies with women to change the perception about how they are represented in every aspect of filmmaking. On the occasion of Women's Day on Monday, Rani added that if women celebrated each others success, they would be heard all the more."In my journey in the Hindi film industry, I have realised that the power is with the women to change the perception about how women are represented in every aspect of film-making. We have to support each other, root for each other and empower each other, so that the road is smoother for others who want to make a name for themselves in the male-driven industry. We have to celebrate each other and our successes collectively to ensure that we are all heard all the more," Rani said. She considers herself fortunate to have got the opportunity to bring fantastic characters to life. "As an artiste, I have been fortunate enough to play some really fantastic self-reliant women on screen and live their inspiring stories closely. Like me, many actresses over generations have tried to change the conversation about how women are portrayed on screen," she said. Rani feels

Actress and sitarist Neha Mahajan played the sitar for the song "Mi Sangre" in Ricky Martin's album "Pausa", which has bagged a Grammy nomination this year. Neha feels lucky to be part of such a collaboration, more so because the song talks about world peace and inclusivity. "I got a call from Ricky Martin's associates Mireille Bravo. I was offered to play the sitar part in the song, but before that I was sent an English

blessed that through her films she was given an opportunity to change the conversation of female representation in India. Rani's last two films were "Hichki" and "Mardaani 2". She says she wants to continue finding unconventional scripts as these while representing women on screen."I have throughout my career made conscious decisions to portray strong women characters on screen who led by example for society. I have chosen to play women characters who can command respect, because of their uninhibited life choices," she said. "I will be inclined to pick projects that have a powerful story to tell through the eyes of a bold, upright woman who doesn't fear voicing her opinions and is confident about being herself," she summed up.

Actress Kriti Sanon is the "outsider" in Bollywood who changed the game for herself without a bloodline or godfather. She is glad that people believed in her.Right from her first film, the actress has only worked in projects that are either backed by big production houses, have a good script or are studded with big names. She feels that while she took baby steps as she navigated her way in the industry, her patience has paid off.the actress talks about how her life changed when she had moved from suburban Delhi to Mumbai's glamour world. "I took baby steps. I was not running very fast," says Kriti, and she continues: "When you come into the industry, there is not so much that you know. You have a set of managers and agencies that tell you what is good and what is not. I have always been very opinionated, to an extent that sometimes my managers

translation of the song 'Mi Sangre', as it is originally in the Spanish language. Initially, I wondered if it was a prank call. But then after I crossed-checked I realised how big the opportunity was for me. I had a 'pinch-me' moment! We all have grown listening to and admiring Ricky Martin," Neha said. The song has been nominated in the Best Latin Pop or Urban Album category at the 63rd Grammy Awards. Neha is also an actress, who appeared in Deepa Mehta's film "Midnight's Children" and web series "Leila". She will next be seen in the film "Koi Jaane Na".

These days there is a thin line between positive and negative leads : Freddy Daruwala Actor Freddy Daruwala is known to be among the most good-looking villains in Bollywood. Having been part of big commercial projects as Holiday, Force 2, and Commando 2, has only helped him become a popular face. However, he feels the scope for villains in a film story is restricted nowadays."I never thought of myself as a villain or a hero. These days there is a very thin line between positive and negative leads, but casting directors don't see your potential to be a positive lead and as a result, you get typecast," Freddie said."I would love to play a negative or positive lead. It's just that when you play a positive lead, you get many choices of scripts because the project is building around you and your character. When you play a villain, there are not many scripts that explore the character. Times were different in the 1980s or

have gotten irritated because I have a strong mind and I end up not listening to them." The actress, who started her career with "Heropanti" in 2014, reveals that while there was a lot of nervousness in her before the big debut happened, she now knows that the dilemma will always resurface before every release. She adds: "Even when I did my first film, there was a lot of restlessness before release. I was in a new city, had done B-tech and was coming to a city where I didn't know anybody. It does get restless and insecure on whether it will happen or not. At that time, it's important that to find one or two people, like I did with my agency, who believe in you. They told me to wait and not be in a hurry because the first film is very important. My patience paid off."

the 1990s, where there were just one villain and one hero and there used to be a tussle between them. Nowadays, the situation or society becomes the villain. The content has changed," he adds. The actor will soon be seen in "The Incomplete Man", in a positive role, which fights to get justice for a rape victim. "I am not saying I want to come out of that image. My fans like me, so I don't have to work hard to change the image. Luckily, the performances I have given, people have liked me. It has not been difficult for people to get convinced that I can do something different," he says. "If I keep sitting and waiting for roles to be a villain, then I am limiting myself and even if I sit and wait for the role of a hero, I am limiting myself," says the actor, who will also be seen in a pivotal role in upcoming series "Inspector Avinash".

'In the mood to dance and whistle and scream and jump' : Pulkit Samrat Actor Pulkit Samrat sure is in a festive mood lately, though one is not sure if it is because he has a big release lined up, or because he is at a wedding. In a new picture the actor posted on Instagram, he seems to be attending some sort of a festivity -- most likely a wedding. The actor is seen whistling and dancing at the ceremony."In the mood to dance and whistle and scream and jump..!" he wrote as caption. Pulkit is right now gearing up for the release of the upcoming movie "Haathi Mere Saathi". The R a n a Daggubatistarrer

jungle adventure is slated to be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages. The film highlights the issue of global warming and deforestation that impact wildlife and human population, and is directed by Prabhu Solomon. The Hindi version of the film also features Zoya Hussain, Shriya P i l g a o n k a r, Paras Arora, Ankit Sagar and Tinnu Anand.

New fund helps local governments deliver on housing priorities

A

new program supporting local governments to improve their development approvals process builds on the Province’s commitment to help people and communities get the homes they need built faster. “The ongoing pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for local governments and has heightened the need to further increase the supply of new, affordable homes for people in their communities,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Housing providers, the development sector and local governments all have a role to play in improving current development approvals, and this Development Approvals Program

complements what local governments are already doing to get people the right housing for their communities quickly and efficiently.” The $15-million Local Government Development Approvals Program is part of the Province’s ongoing work to give local governments the tools necessary to meet housing needs in their communities. It helps local governments look at best practices and innovative ways to support non-profit housing organizations, developers and other stakeholders to deliver essential and diverse types of housing to people around the province. Examples of projects that will qualify for funding include: upgrades to a digital or online development application process to make it easier for applicants to apply; developing a pre-application workshop or seminar to help developers better understand the application PAGE 22

requirements and speed up the process; and conducting internal reviews of current development approvals processes to identify opportunities for improvement.

Is My ICBC Settlement Taxable?

Anthony Thomas Lawyer and Founding Partner Simpson, Thomas & Associates As we are in the midst of tax season, if you settled a claim with ICBC last year, you may be asking yourself if it is taxable. The simple answer is no, but the full answer is more complex – tax implications depend on what head of damage we are talking about and how much you receive.

Municipalities, regional districts and the Islands Trust will be eligible for up to $500,000 for projects that improve their development approvals process. Where that is the case, the settlement can include a tax gross up, which is essentially extra money to address the tax implications of investing settlement funds over the long-term. In some cases, a structured settlement may be best, as it can minimize or even eliminate taxes on the settlement. Instead of a single, lump-sum payment, payments are made monthly for a defined number of years and over the individuals lifetime. These payments are tax-free, and do not have to be reported on income tax returns. Enhanced Care confirms improved crash benefits Care, recovery and wage-loss benefits for people injured in crashes will be even more generous than originally proposed, under the new Enhanced Care coverage regulations. “Extensive consultation with medical, health-care and disability advocacy stakeholders has strengthened Enhanced Care, which will ensure people get the care they need, when they need it and for as long as they need it,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “The regulations we’ve finalized prove that, along with more affordable auto insurance, British Columbians will have much better benefits starting May 1.”

said Nicolas Jimenez, president and CEO of ICBC. “Importantly, you will choose your own doctor and healthcare provider to lead your care, and they will work with ICBC to develop your customized recovery plan and get you back on the road to recovery.” Drivers who are responsible for crashes will still pay higher auto insurance premiums. Although there will be a ban on most lawsuits related to bodily injury caused by a vehicle, dangerous drivers convicted of certain Criminal Code offences, such as impaired driving, could still be sued in a civil claim for certain damages and may be prevented from receiving some Enhanced Care benefits. Enhanced Care is also making auto insurance more affordable for British Columbians. When it comes into effect on May 1, customers who buy full basic and optional insurance from ICBC will save 20% on average. Most customers will also be eligible for a one-time, pro-rated Enhanced Care refund. PAGE 23

There should be plenty to occupy you but this could easily distract you from matters going on behind the scenes. It would not be wise to presume you know what can be expected from somebody else, especially if money is involved. Making your priorities clear does not necessarily mean they are accepted. You must follow up.

What you would like to do and what you feel you can do without stirring up too much controversy can be two different things. This could unwittingly bring you to a point where you need to be realistic. There will be commitments attached and while you are capable of handling them you may need to ensure there are boundaries.

Before you enthusiastically rush into something take a good look at the responsibilities attached, as they may not be as easy as they are portrayed. This you could discover from Mid May. Keep your longer-term goals in focus with the view of maintaining your independence when it comes to any future choices.

Get as much rest as possible as your energy level will not be high. Finding some quiet time to yourself will give you the opportunity to contemplate the way a matter can be tackled that should be moving forward but is unclear. Knowing the true desires or expectations of somebody else can be difficult to tap into right now.

Expect a busy and active time involving other people. It might be difficult to work out exactly what they are looking for or expecting from you. You should avoid taking on commitments for this reason, especially if they cannot be changed. Focus on your own priorities and any actions necessary to put things into motion.

Someone else can be charming yet mysterious. You cannot afford to take them on face value, especially when it comes to what they believe will be future development. Employing your natural analytical skills will enable you to realise where things don’t add up. You should not waver from whatever you want to establish for yourself.

The days may seem to drift by without accomplishing what you intended. You may wonder where the time went. Distractions can come from unexpected expectations of others. This will be difficult to curb if you feel guilty about not responding to them. You can certainly make things more enjoyable but you must be determined.

What starts out as fun involving somebody else can turn out to be more for their benefit than yours. This could make you realise that you cannot afford to put any more time into it. Your focus needs to be on matters you want to put into place that will bring underlying security and benefit. This could include home and family.

You are in a good position to put your ideas forward. There is likely to be something about this that will not follow normal protocol. Even so, some sort of traditional aspect can be maintained. Be sure you have all angles covered because anybody you might need to challenge will be prepared to fight for their position.

Attempting to make final decisions on any matter can be difficult. You might be trying to push something too quickly. More time and energy probably needs to be put into the details, especially if it needs to satisfy somebody else. An unexpected opportunity can arise either connected to something you want to buy or work.

You should be full of optimism because the opportunity to pursue something important to you can present itself. This could come about in an unusual way or it could mean you need to go after it in your own way. The only thing you have to watch is spending money on impulse and taking things on face value. Investigate.

There can be much to enjoy on a personal level this week. It may be hard to feel motivated when it comes to general routine but it won’t hurt to be lazy for once. You need some time to think and contemplate so that you can take advantage of the active cycle you have until 23rd April to start putting things in place for solid results later.

Minister’s statement on safe return to campus this fall

Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced “I also know some people will be Education and Skills Training, has feeling nervous. Your safety is our issued the following statement re- top priority. At every step, we’re garding post-secondary education in going to be working with Dr. Henry and all our partners to make sure the fall 2021: right measures are in place to keep “Today, Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial people safe. health officer, advised the presidents of all public colleges and universities to prepare for a full return to on-campus education this September. “This year has been incredibly hard, and I’ve heard from many students, faculty and staff who are eager to return to campus when it is safe. That’s why I’m encouraged by Dr. Henry’s advice that a return to in-person instruction can be done safely this fall for all students, staff and faculty. In fact, it’s important to do so for people’s well-being. PAGE 32

“This is just the beginning of a process. Last year, my ministry worked closely with health and safety experts, student groups, labour, Indigenous partners and post-secondary institutions to develop the Go Forward Guidelines that enabled the current hybrid model of post-secondary education: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/ assets/gov/education/post-secondary-education/institution-resourcesadministration/aest_postsecgoforwardguidelines.pdf

ing with Dr. Henry’s office, the Steering Committee for the postsecondary COVID-19 Go-Forward Guidelines and experts from across the post-secondary sector to plan for a safe return to in-person learning this fall.

“The guidelines will provide highlevel guidance to post-secondary institutions for a safe resumption of on-campus learning. Institutions will then work with their local medical health officer and WorkSafeBC to develop more detailed safety plans for each institution.

“It has been a challenging year for post-secondary students, faculty and staff. I would like to acknowledge the significant efforts public colleges and universities made to continue “In the coming weeks, we will use meeting the needs of students during that same successful process, work- the pandemic, while successfully

preventing the spread of COVID-19 on B.C. campuses. “While we update the guidelines to ensure on-campus safety, I encourage students and families to start planning for in-person instruction on a campus of their choice in September.”
