How to adapt home spaces to fit the new normal (NC) Did you take on a big home makeover during the pandemic? Working from home has been the main push for major alterations to homes across the country. In fact, nearly three in 10 Canadians have adapted their space in the past year, slightly higher than those who renovated, according to a recent survey by Aviva Canada. Some of the most popular changes are adaptations to a current living space for a workspace, a home gym and/or a space for homeschooling. The price tag for adapting spaces to better suit living situations during the pandemic is similar across the country, with the average cost coming in at $783 according to the same survey. But in our rush to make changes that suit our new lifestyle, many of us may have missed an important consideration — insurance. Especially if you’ve invested in a big makeover.
“If you’ve made major modifications to your home, keep in mind that finishing a basement, removing structural supports or building an addition could impact your insurance coverage,” explains Phil Gibson, managing director, personal insurance and data science at Aviva Canada. Only a quarter of those who have made at least one change in their homes in the past 12 months say they have already, or they intend to, update their content insurance. But almost two thirds haven’t. Three new EV chargers in Fraser Valley British Columbia’s network of public electric vehicle (EV) fastcharging stations is expanding with the opening of three new stations in the Agassiz and Chilliwack, making it easier for people commuting in the Lower Mainland to charge up their EVs. “More and more British Columbians are switching to electric vehicles to save on fuel costs and reduce air pollution,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “Through CleanBC, we’re working with our partners to expand our EV charging network across the province, make it easier for drivers to go electric and put B.C. on the road to a clean energy future.” Fast chargers allow EV drivers to get approximately 250 kilometres worth of charge per hour. Having them located in densely populated or hightraffic areas makes it easier than ever for people to commute in their EVs and save on fuel costs, while contributing to a cleaner environment. “We are giving Canadians the greener options they want to get to where they need to go. This is how we get to net-zero by 2050,” said Seamus O’Regan Jr., federal Minister of Natural Resources. These latest fast chargers are the result of a partnership between Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation and BC Hydro. “People in British Columbia are switching to clean electric vehicles in record numbers to reduce climate-harming pollution, save on fuel and maintenance costs, and enjoy a cleaner, better technology,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “Through CleanBC, we’re helping make EVs more affordable and more convenient to drive by significantly expanding fast-charging stations in the Lower Mainland and all across the province.” PAGE 6

Water conservation is everyone’s responsibility
A
s drought and water scarcity continues to rise for most of the southern half of British Columbia, the B.C. government is reminding everyone of the concerns about water supply security for users and the environment.
If conservation measures do not achieve sufficient results and drought conditions worsen, regulatory action may be taken under the Water Sustainability Act. This includes temporary protection orders issued to water licensees to avoid significant or irreversible harm to aquatic ecoAlthough some areas in the northern systems. Provincial staff are actively part of the province have recently
received healthy showers that alleviated most dry conditions, the rainfall received in some southern areas has not had a considerable effect on water scarcity relief. The scattered and short-term showers over the weekend may buffer drought effects, but are not enough for water systems to recover. The unseasonable heat and dry conditions forecast mid-week and lasting through the weekend will continue to exacerbate drought conditions for many southern areas.
