s many as eight eligible British Columbians will get employability and occupational skills training to prepare them for jobs as professional logging truck drivers in the Okanagan.

They will also receive nine weeks of on-the-job work experience with local employers and two weeks’ follow-up support to assist in their job search.

“Offering training that meets industry needs is a key component of Okanagan College’s mission to transform lives and communities,” said Danelle Greebe, director of continuing studies and corporate training, Okanagan “Projects like this one support people College. “The CEP project will proto find new opportunities in a grow- pel this work forward.” ing and high-demand sector,” said Funding for this project is provided Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social through the Project Based Labour Development and Poverty Reduction. This is a new Community and Employer Partnerships (CEP) project from the Government of British Columbia. Participant recruitment is focused on youth living in the region.

“Graduates of the program will have the skills they need to find goodpaying jobs, while employers will have access to qualified employees.” The Province is providing almost $325,000 to Okanagan College in Vernon to deliver its professional truck driver training program. Participants will receive 15 weeks of employability, occupational and soft skills training, including Airbrakes and Class 1 Drivers Learners Licence training, to prepare them for the Class 1 licence exam, Mandatory Entry Level Training and BC Forest Safety Council Professional Industry Driver theory and mentorship programs. CEP. CEP’s investments are targeted toward projects supporting an inclusive economic recovery. CEP supports B.C. job seekers’ training and work experience, leading to employment in available jobs, and aids businesses and communities in addressing labour-market challenges. CEP invests $15 million annually in communities throughout B.C. Full-time, group-based learning for this project starts on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021. Project activities run until Feb. 25, 2022. Anyone interested in finding out more about this or other CEP projects can contact their local WorkBC centre.

“The B.C. government has a dedicated team working closely with ranchers and farmers to respond to emergencies like wildfires and to create programs that help preserve their businesses and our local food supply,” said Lana Popham, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “The losses B.C. farmers and ranchers have experienced this year have been heartbreaking, and recovering from them will take time, commitment and support, for which the B.C. government will be there for the whole way.”

The governments of B.C. and Canada are creating a federal-provincial AgriRecovery response to help producers who are experiencing extraordinary recovery expenses due to fire and drought. “We are working closely with the Province to get B.C. farm families the support they need as soon as possible,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “By unlocking more AgriStability funds through interim payments and invoking late participation, we can get more cash in hand for farmers who are making tough decisions in a difficult situation. We will continue to support farm families to get them through the challenges we face today, and position them for a sustainable future, since we know climate change will continue to pose challenges.”

implementing “late participation” in the federal-provincial AgriStability program for 2021. The program provides funding to farmers who have experienced income declines due to crop or livestock losses or market conditions. Late participation means B.C. farmers not enrolled for the 2021 program year can apply to enrol until Dec. 31, 2022. Farmers enrolled in the AgriStability 2021 program year will be eligible to receive a much higher interim payment within a few weeks of completing the application forms. Increasing the maximum interim payment from 50% to 75% of the estimated final payment will improve cashflow for farmers and help them continue operations this year. B.C. ranchers and farmers who have suffered a decrease to their available feed supply and require emergency support as a result of this summer’s wildfires may also be eligible to receive hay through the Emergency Feed Program established by the Province, ensuring continued care for their animals. The 2021 Wildfire Emergency Feed Program will provide emergency feed support for up to 14 days for commercial livestock businesses unable to access their normal feed supply, or if their current forage has been burned or is unsafe. The program will also support businesses forced to use forage or feed resources normally required to feed livestock through the rest of their yearly production cycle.

Agricultural producers who require emergency assistance or information, including assistance with livestock relocation, emergency feed, permission for re-entry into evacuation-order zones, or other emergency issues related to the wildfire situation, should contact their First Nation or local authority for the area where their operation is located. Local authorities and First Nations are responsible for emergency management decisions within their areas of jurisdiction and are supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries and the Emergency The Province has also taken steps to Management BC Provincial Regional provide farmers and ranchers with Emergency Operations Centre. additional and immediate support by

Dr. Navreen Gill- Federal Liberal Candidate for Abbotsford Dr. Navreen Gill has dedicated her life to the service of others and believes in rolling up her sleeves to make a direct impact. She became a Family Physician to help those around her who were in the most need and to care for her community. During the pandemic, Dr. Gill expanded her practice to include hospital medicine to do her part in serving on the front lines of public health for Canada and the Fraser Valley. Born and raised in Abbotsford on the traditional, ancestral and unceded shared territory of the Stó:lō people and the Sumas First Nation and the Matsqui First Nation, she’s a proud alumna of W.J Mouat Secondary and graduated from the UBC Family Medicine Program in Prince George. Dr. Gill is once again putting herself forward to serve and to help those around her by running in this election. She believes in proactive politics, and believes that complex challenges deserve thoughtful, evidence-based solutions that will benefit generations of her neighbours – now and in the future. I’m Navreen Gill, a family doctor, and I volunteered to work in-person with acute care covid-19 patients during the pandemic. As a physician, I took comfort in the extraordinary leadership of the Liberal government. I have always been passionate about helping people and I’ve been inspired to help my community on a larger scale by running to be your Liberal MP.

My patients come to me in their most vulnerable moments. I am able to see first hand what they need. And I go home at the end of the day, thinking about all the extra, not medical stuff that I wish I could help them with. I cannot describe the sense of relief I felt when I was able to provide resources to my patients, who were in desperate need during the pandemic. This Liberal government did that. I was born and raised in Abbotsford. This community is the reason I am who I am today. And I want to give back the investment, compassion and leadership to my neighbours that you have always given me. It is a privilege to help – really help people – everyday. I want to take everything I’ve learned as a doctor, a carer, and use that to be this community’s voice in Ottawa, to fight for proactive politics that will increase the quality of life for us all, not just now but for future generations.

New supportive homes coming to Mission The Province, through BC Housing, is teaming up with the City of Mission and Mission Community Services Society (MCSS) to develop approximately 50 new supportive homes for people experiencing homelessness in the community.

supportive housing due to its proximity to community and health-care services. The city will be reaching out to the community to ask what improvements can be made to the other neighbourhood park, Kinsmen West Park.

“Our government is working quickly with our partners to develop supportive housing for the people who need it most,” said Bob D’Eith, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission. “Everyone deserves safe and stable housing, and this new project will give vulnerable people in Mission the supports and services they need to move forward with their lives.”

“This housing is long overdue, and it will fill an important gap for people who want to live independently with easy access to supports,” said Paul Horn, mayor, City of Mission. “We have been very successful in partnering with BC Housing and MCSS in the past, and this project is the next step in that collaboration. We still have work to do, but this is a muchneeded project, and we are excited to see it happening.” BC Housing and MCSS have submitted a development variance permit application for the site. If approved, BC Housing will update the community with the proposed construction timeline.

MCSS, an experienced non-profit housing provider, will operate the homes, located at 7460 Hurd St. The society will provide residents with support services, including daily meals, life-skills training, employment assistance and counselling, physical and mental health resources, and access to addiction treatment and recovery services. At least two staff members will always be on site. “MCSS is proud to partner with BC Housing to offer more supportive housing in Mission,” said Michelle Puffer, executive director, MCSS. “We believe this addition to the housing continuum already in Mission will continue to help support our vulnerable population in achieving a stable housing environment, and that this will enable clients to keep positively moving forward.” The development will transform Dr. Humes Memorial Park into modular homes for people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. The City of Mission identified this site as an appropriate location for much-needed

“This new project will help address the lack of housing options for people in Mission facing complex challenges,” said Pam Alexis, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission. “Too many people have been forced to live in shelters or on the street. Thank you to our project partners for working with us to help finally provide those in need a place of their own to call home.” BC Housing, the City of Mission and MCSS will set up a community advisory committee to oversee the supportive housing’s integration within the community and address any questions raised by people in the neighbourhood. BC Housing will provide more details about the project and address questions from the community during information sessions on Monday, Sept. 13 and Tuesday, Sept. 14. Top 5 Tips on Dealing with Aggressive Drivers Aggressive driving increases the chances of being hurt in a major accident. Surrey lawyers at Simpson, Thomas & Associates have represented many accident victims who have been seriously injured by aggressive drivers. Following too closely, ignoring traffic control devices, failing to yield the right of way, improper passing, abrupt lane changes – these are just some of the examples of high-risk, aggressive driving that can cause car crashes. It is important to know how to respond or diffuse the situation if you encounter an aggressive driver. Here are our top 5 tips on dealing with aggressive drivers: 1. Yield the right of way if an aggressive driver does not: There are many instances where the rules of the road require a give-and-take – fourway stop intersections are a prime example. When aggressive drivers don’t wait their turn, they put everyone else on the road at risk of a major accident. Surrey lawyers at our firm have seen cases where aggressive drivers challenge for the right-of-way when turning left at an intersection or when exiting a parking lot, causing a crash that injures other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. If you encounter an aggressive driver, take the proverbial high road and yield the right of way. 2. Leave space around your vehicle so you can react to an aggressive driver: Allow enough room around your vehicle so that you have time and space to respond if faced with a driver who engages in risky driving behaviour. For example, when approaching a red light at an intersection, leave extra room ahead of your vehicle so that you can pull out or forward in the event that an aggressive driver approaches to quickly from behind or stops too close to your vehicle. PAGE 20

3. Keep your vehicle at a safe speed: When another driver is tailgating your vehicle, the instinct is often to increase your vehicle’s speed to put some distance between vehicles. Others may respond to tailgating by slowing their vehicle’s speed significantly to encourage the aggressive driver to pass (or worse, block the passing lane to “annoy” the aggressive driver). Instead, drivers should maintain a safe speed, signal, and change lanes when appropriate to allow the aggressive driver to pass. Don’t let another’s risky driving make you a risky driver too. 4. Stay calm and avoid confrontation: If you encounter an angry driver or driver who makes a mistake such as cutting your vehicle off or taking your parking space, do not respond with aggressive behaviour such as yelling, excessive honking, or rude hand gestures that may escalate the situation or ignite a “road rage” incident. You should stay calm and be polite, even if other drivers do not. 5. Report aggressive drivers or dangerous driving: If the situation warrants, you should report an aggressive driver to the authorities. Make note of the driver’s licence plate and call the non-emergency police phone number when it is safe for you to do so (remember, do not use your phone while operating a vehicle). Considerations for installing an electric car charger at home (NC) Electric vehicle purchases are growing in popularity. Researchers predict that by 2030, half of vehicles in Canada will be electric. But before buying an EV and charging station, there are some things to keep in mind. Choose the correct charging level. You’ll need to select the appropriate charging level for your home so you don’t overload the circuitry. Level one requires a standard 120volt household outlet, while level two requires a 240V branch circuit, just like stoves and dryers. Level three is not designed for homes.

Upon completion of work, make sure to confirm that the business files a notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority. 4 tips to cut your cleaning time in half

Call us today

604-287-8600

(NC) If cleaning is your least favourite chore but you love a tidy space, you’re probably looking for ways to cut down your housework time without sacrificing that fresh home feeling. The key to managing household tasks and maintaining the home of your dreams is having an easy-to-follow, time-saving routine. The following tips can help you cut down on your cleaning time:

3. Place a doormat inside to catch any leftover dirt on the way into the house. On grocery days when the household is running in and out to bring in the week’s food, dirt can get stuck on shoes and tracked throughout the house. A doormat will stop messes in their tracks before they make their way down the hallway and into the kitchen.

1. Invest in high quality cleaning cloths and dusters. When you want to remove dust, thicker fabrics are key for grabbing and holding onto it, rather than spreading particles around that settle somewhere else. One quick swipe is all you need for a surface free of dust and other irritating allergens.

4. Leave vacuuming and mopping until the end of your cleaning routine to pick up any dirt or dust that has been swept off higher areas. Use a powerful cleaning tool like the Tineco iFloor 3, which is available at Best Buy and combines mopping and vacuuming in one easy step, saving you tons of time.

2. Fabric softener is a great multipurpose item that most people ignore. Apart from using it to keep your clothes smelling clean and fresh, you can mix it in with some water for a quick air, home and fabric freshener or put a few teaspoons into homemade cleaning solutions for a refreshing- smelling kitchen or bathroom.

Suitable for hard-sealed surfaces such as vinyl, hardwood and tile, the tool can suck up everyday juice spills, muddy paw prints or crumbs. Your floors will dry almost instantly, free of streaks. When done, give it a quick charge and activate the self-cleaning mode, leaving it ready for your next major spill.

You could come up with some novel ways to make things more interesting when it comes to routines that must be dealt with in life. This could also include saving money in some way. Social activity and greater interaction with other people can pick up significantly from now to mid September. Watch what you eat though.

An excellent time for putting your ideas into play when it comes to getting a good structure in place. This could include matters associated with the home or family. You need to have confidence in your own ideas and not allow pressure coming from the expectations of others to stand in your way, if that is what they attempt to do.

A good time for successful interaction with other people on either a personal or work level. This could lead to a busier time with perhaps a lot more social activity up to mid September. You might also need to be mindful of not allowing this to distract you from important commitments. Be mindful of impulsive spending.

Much can fall into place easily for you this week. The main thing is to enjoy whatever you are doing, even if there are responsibilities or what seems to be some sort of limitations attached. There will probably be some work to do or the need to get a regular routine in order. Properly done, it will allow you to have future choices

The need to be straightforward with your ideas can arise. You could feel as though you need to fight for what you believe. This could be because of undue pressure from somebody else, who want their way, especially if there is any expectation for you to drop something. The turning point can be support from another person.

Mental clarity when it comes to any changes you might want to make personally for the future is one thing but you need to be prepared to fight for what you want. Be firm about anything you feel either needs to be dropped or altered dramatically when it comes to regular routines. It might be time others shared these things.

September. This will provide you with the opportunity to make things more pleasant for yourself, which could include spending some money on yourself. Don’t worry too much

hesitate in pursuing what you want. It might mean letting go of something that has been in place for a long time. It could also mean an increase in the level of responsibility you will

need to handle. Someone with authority will be willing to listen to any changes to regular routines that need to be streamlined and perhaps made more efficient. If there is something you want to be able to expand in the future then limitations to this that you can see will need to be discussed. Focus on bringing balance to priorities to mid September

You will not be happy with any situation that you feel has too much control over what you can do, especially if this seems to be an ongoing future thing. Taking more control of your personal circumstances has been a major lesson one way or another in your life since 2008. Inventiveness will find a way around things now.

Pay close attention to people you are dealing with on any level. Be careful of gaining a false sense of security because of those who are genuine because there can also be people who are secretive. Be wary of questions you are asked where you have little information about their opinion. Ask them why they want to know.

You can be dealing with others who will want to move swiftly ahead, which you could find impatient. If any information they are giving you is too technical, don’t let this put you off asking them to make it clearer. You need to be sure that anything you have to do will not put too much pressure on your normal activities.

Guru Randhawa to turn actor, explore multiple genres Singer-composer Guru Randhawa, who is all set to try his luck as an actor in Bollywood, is eager to explore different genres and not just limit himself to any one particular genre.Talking about it, Guru Randhawa said “I’m personally a big fan of Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio movies. This is my first film and I want to give my 100% to it, I would try and like to explore different genres like romantic, thriller etc in movies and not to get stuck with one.” Opening up on why he decided to try his luck in acting, the singer expressed: “Well, it was all very instinctive. I mean, there wasn’t a fixed process and I think it is a series of events that leads to one particular big event. It all fell in place one thing after the other. We signed this film last month and since then I’ve been excited to see my journey and the road ahead.” His debut film is a Hindi musical drama that showcases the tumultuous journey of a young musician. If Guru

Randhawa tastes success as an actor, would he like to continue both acting and singing? “I would like to do both and I think for me they will go hand in hand,” he replied. However, the musician is not ready to give up if his initial projects as an actor do not make it big. “That’s destiny but my hard work will be constant always,” he shared. Quizzed if he has taken any formal training in acting, the singer replied: “Over the years I have been playing different roles for my threeminute music videos but now only the duration of the movie will increase. I’ve learnt so much from Mrunal, Nushrratt, Nora (actors who have featured in his music videos) as they act on the big screen. It’s always a pleasure to learn from such talented people.” “The hard work and effort will be constant and will always be. I think I’m ready for my Bollywood debut,” Guru concluded.

Pandemic taught me to feel grateful for life : Nimrat Kaur

Actress Nimrat Kaur says living amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has taught her to feel grateful for every little thing in life. Opening up on her experience of living through the pandemic, Nimrat said “During the first lockdown, I was at home all by myself but this time I actually wasn’t completely by myself. So I had a little relief in that sense. I was at a place where I did have some company and I could walk around in some fresh air from time to time. But it’s been such a challenging time.” Recalling the time of the second

wave, the actress shared: “My heart goes out to people who have lost their loved ones and those who suffered so much. In May, when we had just closed the shoot, fled the scene and went back to our homes, those times were so difficult. Everyday one would hear of someone passing away, losing their battle to the disease. It’s been such a trying time.” “I have never felt more grateful for my loved ones, family, friends, relatives, people at my work. I am full of gratitude for every little blessing and will never take anything for granted. Just the fact that we wake up alive with fresh air in our lungs, that’s something to feel grateful for,” Nimrat expressed. On the work front, Nimrat recently wrapped shooting for her upcoming film ‘Dasvi’ where she features alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Yami Gautam. In the film, the actress will be seen playing a politician. “I play very unlikely and interesting kind of politician. It was an unfamiliar territory for me. I play somebody who belongs to a rural set up in north India. It is like a straight out of real life character and her journey,” Nimrat informed without divulging much details about the role.

In his 39-year-long journey in the world of acting, Jackie Shroff has starred in over 200 films in several languages and has dabbled in almost all genres possible. The actor calls himself an open book and says that he is not opposed to doing anything when it comes to movies. Jackie, who is fondly called as ‘Jaggu dada’ by his fans and friends, is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming thriller ‘The Interview: Night of 26/11’, where he will be seen playing a war correspondent. Jackie said: “I think directors saw ‘Devdas’ in me, ‘Sai Baba in me, ‘Mission Kashmir ’ in me…It’s not a conscious choice, it’s just the

Conviction of telling story sells film to actor : Neha Sharma Actress Neha Sharma, whose latest release is 'Vikalp', a short film directed by Dheeraj Jindal, says it is the conviction of telling a story that sells a film to an actor."The conviction of telling a story is what sells a film to an actor. In his debut film itself, Dheeraj had that clarity of vision and a distinctive voice. I knew I had to work with him. I am so glad we did 'Vikalp', which is frankly a fantastic project," Neha said.'Vikalp' is about a small town girl with many aspirations who has moved to a metro city to fulfill her dreams. The director, who has previously helmed short films such as "The School Bag", starring Rasika Duggal, finds runtime is irrelevant. Jindal said: "I am of the belief that format, runtime are irrelevant and the power of a story is what eventually shines in a film. I love the short films I have made because they had to be punchy and potent at the same time. I am so grateful to Neha for trusting my vision. We had a ball of a time working together." 'Vikalp' starring Neha Sharma and Anshul Chauhan in lead roles, released on Large Short Films.

I can play roles in any genre : Jackie Shroff kind of roles I kept getting over a period of time.” “I have just been an open book and I am not opposed to doing anything. I am not like ‘I want this or that’. So, I have been lucky. I am an open book. I can do anything,” the 64year-old added. ‘The Interview: Night of 26/11’ is directed by Laurens C. Postma, and also stars Anjum Nayar. Jackie shared details about his role.

Negative or grey characters interest me the most : Pranitaa Pandit ‘Kavach’ actress Pranitaa Pandit says she is looking for meaningful and substantial roles for her upcoming shows. And she wouldn’t mind doing a cameo if it has a long-lasting impact on the audience. So, what kind of roles interest her? “Something that is impactful and interesting. It can be any regular character in the show. If the role is substantial, I am absolutely ok to even do a cameo. But it should be like driving the plot, bringing a major twist. Even if it’s not the lead, it has to be a character around which the content revolves in a way. Negative leads or grey characters interest me the most, and the other kind that I enjoy a lot are comic roles,” says

Pranitaa, who has done shows like ‘Kasam’, ‘Kawach’, ‘Uttaran’ and ‘Jamai Raja’. She feels there are no more reservations around married female actors or young mothers getting substantial roles on television now. “Absolutely, I don’t think there should be any taboo attached to being a mom now. All of us are ageing gracefully. So, it’s amazing that a lot of mothers are getting substantial roles,” she says. Talking about content, Pranitaa is happy how television is opening up to real and relatable stories and approach. “Television has evolved in terms of content, but I would still say that we need to do much more. Same, ageold concepts are still being explored by some. Good that many are experimenting.
