New plan makes it easier to switch from fossil fuels to made-in-B.C. clean electricity The Government of British Columbia and BC Hydro have launched BC Hydro’s new five-year electrification plan.

BC Hydro estimates that if the electrification plan is fully realized, customer rates will be about 1.6% lower by 2026 compared to The plan will make it easier and more what they would be if there were no affordable for people to efficiently plan. use more of B.C.’s clean electricity in place of fossil fuels to power their “When we switch to using clean B.C homes and buildings, businesses and electricity, we’re actually choosvehicles. ing water power to run our homes, vehicles and businesses instead of “From heat waves to wildfires, we are gasoline, diesel or natural gas, and already seeing the devastating effects that’s a smart choice,” said Bruce of climate change. Here in B.C., we Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines have accomplished a lot with North and Low Carbon Innovation. “BC America’s most progressive plan to Hydro’s electrification plan will help reduce carbon pollution – but the us reduce emissions and keep rates scale of the crisis means we must lower, attracting new clean investact with even more urgency,” said ment and innovation to B.C. and Premier John Horgan. “Working generating economic development together with BC Hydro, we will and good, sustainable jobs.” help more people and businesses become less reliant on fossil fuels and If actions in the plan are fully realuse more affordable, made-in-B.C. ized, it will result in incremental hydroelectricity. BC Hydro’s Electrification Plan – A clean future powered by water – proposes new programs, and incentives to advance the switch from fossil fuels to clean electricity in homes and buildings, vehicles and fleets, businesses and industry, and attract new energy-intensive industries to British Columbia. BC Hydro plans to invest more than $260 million to implement the plan over the next five years, including nearly $190 million to promote fuel switching in homes and buildings, vehicles and industry, and more than $50 million to attract new industries to B.C. that are looking for clean power to run their businesses and reduce their carbon footprint. The plan also includes programs to reduce the time required to get customers connected to BC Hydro’s grid. As more customers increase the use of electricity, BC Hydro’s energy sales will increase, providing more revenue to cover its fixed system PAGE 6

“One of the biggest advantages we have to cut carbon emissions and create new economic opportunities for people in B.C. is through our abundant renewable energy,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “We need to electrify more of our daily activities – like driving, heating our homes and powering our industries – with clean power. BC Hydro’s electrification plan sets out significant new actions to help us meet our CleanBC climate targets and build for a netzero emissions future.” The plan builds on existing BC Hydro and provincial rebates and customer supports for the installation of heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers and electrification measures from CleanBC, and new recommendations from Phase 2 of the BC Hydro Review, including the discounted CleanBC Industrial Electrification Rates that were announced in January 2021. With as much as $20 million in incentives and study funding

to support the production of hydrogen, the plan also helps to advance the B.C. Hydrogen Strategy released in July 2021. The electrification plan complements BC Hydro’s long history of Power Smart energy efficiency and conservation programs (demand side measures) that help customers reduce their energy use and save money on their bills. “With a legacy of conservation at our core, we take pride in helping our customers use resources wisely, find efficiencies and manage their costs,” said Chris O’Riley, president and CEO, BC Hydro. “And now, with a

global focus on climate change, we have an incredible opportunity to also take advantage of our clean electricity to power homes, businesses, vehicles and industries. We’re here to help people and businesses make the switch from fossil fuels to being powered by water.” BC Hydro’s electrification plan was filed with the B.C. Utilities Commission as part of BC Hydro’s Fiscal 2023-25 Revenue Requirements Application on Sept. 1, 2021.

“The restaurant industry has shown incredible strength and resiliency throughout the pandemic,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “In tough times like these, people look to each

other to find support and guidance, and that includes government. This extension helps one of the hardest-hit sectors stay open as we slowly and safely emerge from the pandemic.” The food delivery service fee cap is being extended under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act and will immediately follow the expiry of the current temporary order put in place on Dec. 22, 2020, under the Emergency Program Act. The current order was set to expire at midnight (Pacific time) on Sept. 28, 2021. The order will continue to cap fees charged to restaurants from food delivery companies to 15%. An additional cap of 5% will also be extended for other related fees associated with use of the service, such as online ordering and processing fees. This will ensure companies cannot shift their delivery costs to other fees. “The pandemic has impacted all sectors of our economy,” said Adam Walker, Parliamentary Secretary for the New Economy. “The cap on food delivery fees has provided stability

for local restaurants while ensuring that delivery drivers are fairly compensated for their work.” Along with extending the food delivery service fee cap, government continues to work with the restaurant industry to ensure a safe dine-in experience with the launch of the BC Vaccine Card. More than three million people have signed up for the card since the requirement to show proof of vaccination at restaurants and other events and services went into place this month. “This is welcome news for B.C. restaurateurs,” said Mark von Schellwitz, vicepresident Western Canada, Restaurants Canada. “During the past 18 months, takeout and delivery sales has become a lifeline for restaurants and will continue to provide a critical revenue stream on our road to recovery. We appreciate the B.C. government listening to our hard-hit industry and extending this measure.” Small-delivery service businesses that serve less than 500 restaurants will continue to be exempt from the order. The order also prohibits delivery companies from reducing compensation for their drivers, allowing employees to continue to be paid their regular wages. “The extension of the food delivery service cap will have a significant positive impact on restaurants like ours that use delivery companies to service their customers,” said Warren Erhart, president, White Spot Hospitality. “We appreciate the collaboration on this initiative as we work together to find solutions in these challenging times.” The revised order is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2021, at which point it will be reviewed, taking into account the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

You could feel you are being overlooked. Something that was discussed last week that seemed firm could now become less so. It would be best to allow matters to float until mid October. Then you can rely on promises being kept. All you can do right now is put your priorities forward. You could benefit from recommendation.

Involvement with others can be easygoing and pleasant, even though it may be difficult to work out where things stand. You can take the opportunity to question future possibilities but expect difficulty when it comes to getting some straight answers. You must remain focussed on routine obligations already in place.

Somebody else may decide to put something you were looking forward to, associated with leisure or pleasure, on hold for the moment. This is likely to eventually go ahead. From mid October onwards will be more reliable. Future prospects can be stable, though you should not try to do too much at once.

Anything you want to restructure that requires agreement from somebody else could have some hold-ups to mid October. This does not mean that your ideas are not accepted but rather they feel they need time to further contemplate your suggestions. Meanwhile focus on enjoying any social opportunities this week.

Something might need another look, especially when it comes to the finer details. You could discover details you have previously missed. You could also become aware of structuring matters that would bring greater balance, agreement, even pleasure when it comes to things that need to be managed on a regular basis.

Think twice before you spend money on anything that might give you pleasure to have but don’t really need. This might include keeping an eye on your daily spending. You will get greatest pleasure from communication with others that is creatively or spiritually orientated, even sharing opinions on what you have watched or read.

You could realise there could be better ways Don’t overlook something that doesn’t seem

especially if you realise it is not suiting you entirely on a personal level. There is no rush to have this sorted right now. You have got until mid October.

eventually discover the fact. There is a lot going on behind the scenes. Best you be patient, as matters will eventually surface. Enjoy what you can right now.

Any situation involving you with a group of people could have its challenges. Involved in this can be people saying or promising one thing but then doing another. The lack of control you have can be very frustrating. You will be on the same wavelength with somebody so all is not lost. Work through it to mid October.

You should not waste time, up to mid October in clearing up any work that you have got behind with or sorting out matters that you decided to leave until later. You can be busy socially, not because you have necessarily planned it that way but rather that it falls into place through circumstance. Be sensible with money matters.

Initiating future plans involving somebody else can be easy. Don’t try to do too much, too soon though. A slow steady pace will be more successful. Part of this can include keeping some of your thoughts under wraps at the moment. You need to see how things unfold to mid October when future possibilities can become clear.

Guard against having a vision of the future, which is unrealistic when it comes to the input or involvement of other people in any of the circumstances. There could be some tension between what your priorities are and the intentions they have. Moving forward on this with any certainty may not be possible until mid October onwards.

Jobs, skills-training project supports therapeutic market garden As many as eight eligible British Columbians will receive work experience and skill-enhancement courses as they develop and build a therapeutic market garden, thanks to a Community and Employer Partnerships (CEP) project. “This new CEP project provides participants with skills and experience to find and keep jobs in the agricultural sector on Vancouver Island,” said Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “In addition, the therapeutic garden will provide a healing environment for those recovering from addiction to learn new skills as they focus on their recovery.” The Province is providing almost $150,000 to The Mustard Seed Street Church in Victoria to deliver its Therapeutic Market Garden program at Hope Farm Healing Centre in Duncan. How B.C. counts its daily COVID-19 cases in hospitals All COVID-19 patients in B.C. who require any form of hospital care are counted as one case in daily totals when they first enter a facility.

included in reports on overall hospital capacity and critical-care capacity. These cases do not directly contribute to the epidemiological picture of the pandemic, but importantly, make a significant contribution to public awareness and understanding of hospitals’ readiness to provide care. The Ministry of Health looks at hospitalizations and critical-care beds to ensure the sustainability of the system. It looks at those numbers in the context of the overall capacity to ensure the system is running efficiently at or near capacity, but not over capacity. The ministry frequently provides information on hospital and critical-care capacity to the media and the public. The BC Centre for Disease Control’s surveillance reports and the numbers in the daily report have a different function. They report the

number of people with COVID-19 who require hospital or critical care. This gives an understanding of the severity of illness and only counts the individual once even if they are hospitalized more than once or have several stays in critical care. These data help determine if, for example, the Delta variant causes increased rates of hospitalization or leads to more people needing critical care. This helps to understand the impact of the pandemic on the population (e.g., what percent of people with COVID-19 require hospital care) and plan public-health measures. PAGE 35

Supports extended for youth from care Eligible youth and young adults who have transitioned from government care will continue to benefit from more flexible access to the Agreements with Young Adults (AYA) program, as government extends COVID-19 emergency measures to March 2022. “All youth transitioning to adulthood need support and strong relationships to help them thrive, and young adults from care can benefit from additional support to set them on a positive path,” said Mitzi Dean, Minister of Children and Family Development. “We know what a tough time this has been for young people, and that’s

why, in response to feedback from youth, we are extending our pandemic measures and making access to mental-health services more flexible so that more youth can get the help they need.” The Province is providing easier access to life-skills, education, mentalhealth and rehabilitation supports through AYA and extending the emergency measures until March 31, 2022. These measures allow eligible young adults to take part in a wider range of programs to support their goals, like learning how to manage their money, connecting Indigenous peoples with Elders in their community, or working on their mental well-being, all with fewer required hours of participation per week. “The pandemic has increased the need for mental-health services, but many young adults said it was hard to find 10 hours a week to dedicate to mental health,” Dean said. “Based PAGE 36

on this feedback and to ensure more young adults can receive support, the hourly requirement has now been reduced to five hours a week.” In addition, all youth who are transitioning to adulthood can continue to access housing supports to stay in their homes until March 31, 2022. Those who are eligible for the AYA program can apply to participate in both programs at the same time. Eligible young adults using the emergency housing support may be eligible to receive up to $350 per month through AYA, based on their needs and the length of their program. Social workers continue to work with youth to transition to adult services as appropriate, including Community Living BC. “We are so glad that the flexible access to the AYA program has been extended again,” said Lorena Bishop, executive director, Federation of BC Youth in Care Networks. “Young people transitioning from care, like all young people, need a safety net as they enter adulthood. It has been very beneficial for youth from government care to have some of these essential supports that they need. This is an important step to creating a comprehensive support system for youth leaving government care.” Ministry staff and delegated Aboriginal agency workers are ready to help any young adults who have questions about their eligibility for the AYA program or need additional flexibility in their services. These interim measures further complement government’s Economic Recovery Plan, as well as its COVID-19 Action Plan to provide income supports, tax relief and direct funding for people, businesses and services.

A lot can happen between script and final product : Tina Desai Actress Tina Desai is gaining visibility for her portrayal of Ananya Ghosh in the web series ‘Mumbai Diaries 26/11’. But the model-turned-actress made her debut with ‘Yeh Faasley’ in 2011 which was not a success. Tina says coming to the world of cinema with no mentor, it is tough to judge the right project to get the right kind of visibility. Tina Desai said “I have started my career in cinema from scratch. I did not have much understanding of judging the right project. My first film was a disaster. When I heard the script narration initially, I found that story and my character very interesting. Eventually, post-release of the film, I realised that it is not just about a good story. How the film is made and released, also about executing the idea can make a difference. “I think if made and

presented well, even an ordinary story could also look extraordinary. I gradually understood the importance of production value and other aspects of films and choosing the right project, therefore. A lot can happen between the script and final product, through filming, editing, and most importantly presentation.” She further added, “For an actor like me, finding that one opportunity, that comes as a full package of – good character, great story, that is backed by a big production house because that gives a great release – is tough for me to find.” The actress appeared in shows like ‘Table No. 21’, ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, and ‘Sense8’.

Marriage is not necessary for one's happiness : Sayani Gupta Actor Sayani Gupta does not really believe in the institution of marriage. "I have a different idea of companionship... I used to believe in the institution of marriage.. it works for certain people and does not work for some. I feel marriage is not really necessary for one's happiness. You really don't need a man to live happily ever after. You can live with your friends.. you can live with your siblings... you can live alone and enjoy your own company. It really depends upon person to person. Maybe after five years, I will be saying something else because it's an evolving thought," Sayani said. On the work front, Sayani recently lent her voice to an audio show - 'Buri Nazar'. The show, which also features Supriya Pathak and Rithvik

Dhanjani, is a story between a mother, a daughter and a boy that she falls in love with. Sharing her experience of working on the project, Sayani said, "It's always wonderful to do audio projects. It's fabulous collaborating with Supriya ma'am and Rithvik. I enjoyed every bit of the process. Telling the whole story just through your voice..isn't it amazing." 'Buri Nazar' is streaming on Audible

Vasan Bala brings unique cinema to the table : Sikander Kher It’s filmmaker Vasan Bala’s master work that drew Sikander Kher to Monica, O My Darling—a noir film set to release soon on Netflix. He believes that Bala brings a unique sense of cinema and pop culture to his films. Enjoying the new learning curve of his career and hoping to collaborate again soon, Kher says, “Vasan sir’s writing and direction [makes the film] a masterpiece. The kind of unique cinema he brings to the table is refreshing. He is so hands-

When it comes to seeking justice, she is unstoppable : Esha Gupta Almost a decade after playing a cop in Prakash Jha’s Chakravyuh (2012), Esha Gupta has donned the khaki uniform again for Nakaab. The web series sees her portray a cop who has to fight the corruption in the system as she investigates the mysterious death of an actor. “The role required me to push my boundaries. While incredibly intelligent, she is a victim of patriarchal conditioning, and has lacked a voice. But when it comes to seeking justice, she is unstoppable. I was floored by the sheer range of this part,” says the actor, who is joined by Mallika Sherawat and Gautam Rode in the MXPlayer offering. Before facing the camera, Gupta says she trained with women cops. Crediting the writers for etching out a “wholesome” character, she adds, “She is vulnerable, but has grit, which is different from what I played in Chakravyuh.” She is currently shooting for Ashram 2 in Jaipur.

on and intricately involved in every aspect of the work including, cinematography, props, costumes and music. It is a privilege and an honour to work with him and I hope our paths cross again soon.” Kher was last seen in Aarya that earned an International Emmy nomination recently. Monica, O My Darling that revolves around the man who tries to make it big with some unlikely allies and a diabolical plan also features Huma Qureshi, Rajkummar Rao and Radhika Apte.

Playing 'Raja Bhojraj' enriching experience : Jay Zaveri Actor Jay Zaveri is a wellknown face on television and to his credit are shows like ‘Ishq Mein Marjawan 2’, ‘Meri Hanikarak Biwi’ and others. Now the actor appears as Raja Bhojraj’, husband of ‘Mirabai’ (Lavina Tandon) in ‘Vighnaharta Ganesha’. Scriptures revolving around Lord Ganesha form the narrative. ‘Mirabai’ is the focus of the current track. ‘Raja Bhojraj’ comes back from the battlefield badly wounded. ‘Mirabai’ fulfils the duty of being his wife. She takes proper care of him without making any contact. Expressing his experience Jay Zaveri says: “The entire sequence was tough and demanding. The battle ended with my character being badly wounded in the battle. ‘Mirabai’ had to constantly take care of ‘Raja Bhojraj’. I feel that playing ‘Raja

Bhojraj’ has been a very enriching experience. When I kept reading about him, I could feel the depth of the story before portraying his character.” Nonetheless, “‘Raja Bhojraj’ always acknowledged Mirabai’s devotion towards Lord Krishna and ensured that he supported her. Alswo, It is ecstatic to be a part of the show and to essay the character of such a nobleman,” he adds. Later on, ‘Mirabai’ was saved from an accident. Her husband ‘Bhojraj’ saved her at the right time. But after breaking the promise of not touching Mirabai, ‘Raja Bhojraj’ goes into depression and due to this, his condition starts deteriorating. He is seen praying to ‘Mirabai’ to help him get salvation. Raja Bhojraj later passes away after Mira’s prayers and his soul gets absorbed in Lord Krishna.
