Supportive homes proposed for New Westminster Updated Dec. 8, 2021, for clarification The Province, through BC Housing, is partnering with the City of New Westminster on a proposal to create approximately 52 new supportive homes for people experiencing homelessness in the city. “There’s a critical need to provide more supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness in New Westminster,” said Jennifer Whiteside, MLA for New Westminster. “Through this proposed housing project, we are working to provide over 50 vulnerable people in the community with safe and secure homes and the supports they need to begin rebuilding their lives. This project is part of the significant efforts our government has underway to tackle the housing crisis and build the homes people urgently need.”

It’s part of the city’s new Crisis Response Bylaw Amendments procedure that fast-tracks urgent housing and time-sensitive crisis services. The proposal is going through an expedited Rezoning and Official Community Plan amendment process. The project was considered at a municipal rezoning hearing on Dec. 6, 2021, and would open in spring 2023, pending approvals.

500k from Sale of Peardonville Community Hall Donated to the Archway Starfish Pack Program The Peardonville Community Association Society has donated $500,000 from the sale of their hall to the Starfish Pack Program of the Archway Food Bank.

children accessed the Summer Starfish Packs. Throughout the school year, 12 volunteer groups with more than 75 members pack bags with two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners and snacks, which they then deliver straight to the schools to go home with students each weekend.

“Our Peardonville Community Hall Committee choose the Starfish Program as it represents most closely the mandate of the original Peardonville Society objectives,” said June Ross, a member of the Peardonville Committee. “The main fundraisers and programs were for children. Stemming from the 2nd World War, the neighbourhood women became part of the Women’s Institute whose motto was “no child should ever go hungry” and the Starfish program fits that motto perfectly.” “Words cannot adequately express how grateful we are for this donation,” said Rod Santiago, the Executive Director of Archway Community Services. “This will do so much to enhance the food the children receive each week, the number of children we can help and live on as ongoing endowment.” How the Funds Will be Used Half of the donation will be invested into an endowment fund called the Mollie Peardon Kissock Starfish Foundation through the Abbotsford Community Foundation. Each year, the interest will be given to the program, ensuring that the legacy of the Peardonville Community Association Society lives on.

Unbeknownst to them, the Society had been dissolved back in 1947 after failing to file the required Annual Society reports for two executive years during the World War II. Since the Society was no longer active, there was no legal owner of the hall. Five former and current members of the community, including descendants of the Peardon family petitioned the Supreme

The program has expanded to over 20 cities across BC with each location managing their own team of volunteers and fundraising campaigns. Learn more at Starfishpack.com/Abbotsford. No playing second fiddle for Tara Sutaria It ’s easy to get lost in the brouhaha surrounding a star kid’s launch. But Tara Sutaria harbours no such fears. Even though all eyes are on Ahan Shetty as he makes his Bollywood debut this weekend with Tadap, Sutaria — who plays his love interest in the Milan Luthria-directed film — is confident that her role will grab the audiences’ attention. “My character here is different from what I played in Marjaavaan [2019] and Student of the Year 2 [2019], or for that matter, from the roles that other actresses are doing. It is strong and well-written. Tadap is Ahan’s launch [vehicle], but I was happy to see that Ramisa [her character] is present throughout the story and [influences] it. I am grateful to Milan sir for that.” A fan of tragic love stories, the actor remembers being moved by the script narration. Little did she know that she would be joined by Shetty junior in the drama. “I didn’t know who was [the lead]. Milan sir asked us to perform a scene. Ahan and I did it, and it was liked by everyone,” she recounts. Tadap, a remake of the Telugu film RX 100 (2018), is among the first few films to be theatrebound after the shutdown. “Someone was discussing the films to be released in theatres. When Tadap was mentioned, it hit me that it’s a big deal for our film to release so soon after the pandemic.”

Dhanush wins Best Actor for 'Asuran' at BRICS Film Festival Actor Dhanush’s stellar performance in director Vetrimaran’s Tamil film ‘Asuran’ fetched him the Best Actor Award at the BRICS Film Festival, which was held alongside the 52nd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) that came to a close here . Interestingly, Dhanush had won a National Award for the same film earlier this year. While Dhanush was adjudged the best actor, Lara Boldorini was awarded the Best Actor (female) at the festival for her performance in the Brazilian film ‘On Wheels’. The Best

We had no right to the title :John Abraham In October, when Akshay Kumar announced his next, Gorkha, one wondered if it was the same film that John Abraham and Nikkhil Advani had been working on for the past year. While Kumar ’s film is reportedly based on the life of Major General Ian Cardozo, a reputed officer of the Gorkha regiment of the Indian Army, little is known about Abraham’s action thriller. All the makers have divulged so far is that it is designed as a tribute to the Gorkha regiment. Abraham sets the record straight, stating that their script is currently being drafted. “Our story is completely different. We will call it something else now; it was tentatively

Film Award was shared by two films – South African film ‘Barakat’ and the Russian film ‘The Sun Above Me Never Sets’. While ‘Barakat’ has been directed by Amy Jephta, the Russian film has been directed by Lyubov Borisova. Chinese Director Yan Han was awarded the Special Mention Award for his film ‘A Little Red Flower’ at the festival. This is the first time that the BRICS Film Festival has been conducted alongside the IFFI. The BRICS festival had films from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa participating in it.

titled Gorkha,” says the leading man, unperturbed by the clash of titles. Abraham indicates that the team of the Aanand L Rai production beat them to acquiring the name. “One needs to register the title. This has happened to me in the past when I have lost the title despite being on the waiting list. In this case, Aanand L Rai justifiably has the title and is going forward with his film. We had no right to it.” For the actorproducer, it’s a happy coincidence that the name will be used for his dear friend’s project. “I am happy that the movie is being made with my favourite person, Akshay Kumar.”

Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha is extremely happy as her recent outing as a pregnant woman in 'Chhorii' has been receiving praises from the audiences. "Chhorii is indeed one of the most important films of my career, and the kind of love the film is receiving is super encouraging. I'm really glad that with Chhorii, I could put out a responsible message that is the need of the hour," she said. Directed by Vishal Furia, 'Chhorii' is a horror drama. Working on the film was not easy for Nushrratt. "It was equally daunting and enriching experience to single-handedly headline such a film. It will remain one of the most difficult films I've done so far," she added. Nushrratt will next be seen in 'Janhit Mein Jaari', and 'Ram Setu'.

50th Anniversary of 54 Missing Indian POW in 1971 Indo-Pak War! It’s been 50 years since the most devastating 1971 war between India and Pakistan. The war started on Dec. 3rd. and ended on Dec. 16th. when the Pakistan forces surrendered to the Indian Forces and Bangladesh was born out of Northwestern part of Pakistan. It was a moment of jubilation for Indians and Bangladeshis but not so for the people of Pakistan. Winning or losing the war always ends with large number of casualties with physical and psychological wounds and even more drastic, are deaths of the brave soldiers. As per reports there were almost 93000 Pakistani soldiers captured by Indian forces and about 2238 Indian soldiers believed to be captured by Pakistan forces during the 1971 war. When the POWs were repatriated, India released all 93000 of them but Pakistan released all but 54 that were unaccounted for. The Pakistan government denied any information on the 54 that were unaccounted. Subsequently the Indian government declared them as “believed to be killed in action on April 1974. It was not until Dec, 1974 when Mr. Mohan Lal Baskar who was also jailed in Pakistan in 1968 was released that it came to light that the 54 POWs were seen in Pakstani jails. The list of the missing soldiers was also shared with a British journalist Victoria Schofield who also covered Mr. Bhutto’s trial. Some more reports kept filtering that more and more Indian prisoners from different crimes were released from Pakistani jails. Advocate of the Missing Defense Personal Relatives Association PAGE 22

Changes to Provincial Court Family Rules will improve access, support families British Columbia families going through separation will soon have more access to parenting supports and courses, as well as continued support for different ways to attend court appearances, as a result of updates to the rules governing family court.

divorce reduce conflict and work toward earlier, more collaborative resolutions, keeping the children’s best interests front and centre. The updates are being made based on feedback received since the introduction of the Provincial Court Family Rules in May 2021.

Beginning Jan. 4, 2022, prior to appearing in Provincial Court family matters, participants will be required to take the Parenting After Separation or Parenting After Separation for Indigenous Families course. Currently, this is a requirement in only 21 of the 89 court registries in the province.

In addition to these changes to the Provincial Court Family Rules, the Province is working with the Provincial Court to design and launch a pilot project in Kamloops in May 2022 for informal trials for family law matters. The idea behind the informal trial pilot is to create a new trial process where a judge can take a more facilitative role to managing the conduct of the trial to better assist participants, especially those who are representing themselves.

This project is part of the significant efforts our government has underway to tackle the housing crisis and build the homes people urgently need.” If approved, the proposed supportive housing project would be built on provincially owned property at 68 Sixth St. The modular building would include approximately 52 studio homes, each

If there is anything you feel unclear about when it comes to somebody else, you should set out to discuss it. This could clear up presumptions or uncertainties on both sides. An opportunity can present itself which will allow you to make future plans that can be pleasure orientated or that will satisfy your priorities more so.

Your interest will be moving forward in a manner that will open you up to greater freedom and enjoyment in the long term. Other people involved might be expecting more than you can realistically manage. There will be challenges but as long as you focus on the details or work that needs to be done you will eventually get there.

You could realise the amount of work involved in something you thought was important, isn’t worth it. You may need to change your priorities based on the expectations of somebody else. Before you do, you should consider the amount of control or the limitations that come with this. Your independence can’t be put aside

Work hard on finalising things that need to be put into place so that you will be free to enjoy yourself more. It will not hurt to question any pressure somebody else is placing on you to perhaps get things done more quickly. It might simply mean pointing out the amount of work involved if matters are to be dealt with properly.

Anything that has been important to you on a personal level during the last two years can now reach a stage where you feel you are in a better position to do things your way. You might get some opposition from somebody who thinks they know better but there will be ways of either getting support or working around them.

Follow what you believe is the most balanced approach when it comes to putting things in place or dealing with family matters. Don’t be influenced by somebody attempting to make you feel guilty or perhaps sorry for them. You need to act on what you consider you can handle because it will work best and be the most efficient.

It may be necessary to make a final decision to end something that has proved inefficient or a big time wasting exercise, otherwise it can hold you back over the next 2 years. You need to weigh up opportunities that you know you can enjoy against accepting limitations that can result in restricting potential future growth.

Being prepared to be serious, as well as putting in the effort required to get a good foundation in place that you can continue to develop long term has every potential to reap successful rewards. It might take a while to be as financially satisfying as you would like but if you are determined to persist, your rewards will materialise.

In any situation where discussion will take place be cautious as to the underlying agenda of those involved. This is not a time for you to be forthright with your ideas to get things going. You need to see what is put forward. That way it will become obvious as to where there is support, as well as the opportunity to have your say.

Catching up with friends or acquaintances and be most relaxing and enjoyable as long as you ensure your responsibilities don’t suffer. There is no reason to spend more money than you feel comfortable about. Stand your ground in any situations where somebody else expects you to accept the way they want to do things.

Finances could encourage you to reconsider something that was an important priority, especially if it involved travel or that it was for reasons of getting away from it all. You could enjoy the feeling of having money behind you for when the unexpected arises. Being able to let your mind wander can be a relaxing practice.

There is little point in attempting to avoid responsibilities, especially with people who have authority in some way. You will benefit more from being prepared to negotiate in such a manner that you give assurances you will see things through. From your standpoint, you need visualise yourself taking these future directions.

Archway Community Connections Offers Gift Wrapping at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre Shoppers at the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre can save time this holiday season with the Gift Wrapping Booth organized by the Archway Community Connections program. Proceeds will support educational classes, relationship building, social activities, and community events to help newcomers build connections in their community. The gift wrapping service was cancelled last year due to COVID which affected the activities the Community Connections program was able to offer. “We rely on this fundraiser to provide extras like our annual International Women’s Day gathering,” said program Supervisor Elise Marier. “We’re grateful to all the volunteers who have already signed up and look forward to helping make the holidays a little less stressful for anyone who brings in presents to be wrapped.”

EV skills-training course begins at Camosun College Automotive technicians in Victoria can align their skills with the low-carbon economy through an electric vehicle (EV) maintenance training pilot program at Camosun College. “With more than 60,000 electric vehicles on the road, British Columbia is leading the country in the transition to EVs,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “We’re supporting this transition by helping auto technicians develop the skills they need to work on EVs throughout the province. This will give British Columbians the confidence to go electric knowing their EVs can be serviced by a professional.” In March 2021, the Province announced $440,000 for the expansion of EV Maintenance Training program through the CleanBC Go Electric program to three additional B.C. colleges in partnership with Trades Training BC. The program provides Red Seal automotive technicians with the skills they need to work on EVs, supports the growing demand for EVs in B.C. and prepares British Columbians for good-paying jobs in the burgeoning clean-energy economy.

The program is being piloted as two one-week in-person courses at Camosun College’s Interurban campus in Greater Victoria and is offered regularly at the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s (BCIT) Burnaby campus, where the program was launched in 2020. Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus and the College of New Caledonia’s Prince George campus held course pilots this year.

We are working toward a cleaner future for B.C. and that’s why we are supporting Camosun’s efforts to offer this important training.” Quick Facts: British Columbia was the first place in the world to have a 100% zero-emission vehicles law and is leading North America in uptake rates of EVs at nearly 10% of new light-duty vehicle sales in 2020. Trades Training BC is a consortium of 15 B.C. public post-secondary educational institutions created to promote trades training in British Columbia. Trades Training BC's primary function is to encourage students and others considering career retraining to explore trades as a viable career option.
