Minister’s statement on Canada’s decision to challenge U.S. softwood lumber duties Katrine Conroy, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, has issued the following statement in support of the Government of Canada’s decision today to challenge the final results of the second administrative review of the U.S. anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders on softwood lumber from Canada: “On Nov. 24, 2021, the United States increased duties from 8.99% to 17.9% on most Canadian softwood lumber producers, an unwarranted move that nearly doubled the previous tariff. “We unreservedly support the decision today by the federal government to issue a Notice of Intent to challenge these unfair and unjustified duties

on Canadian softwood lumber under Chapter 10 of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement. “We have been working tirelessly to vigorously defend British Columbia’s softwood lumber industry and the 50,000 hard-working people in our forest sector against these unwarranted duties. “British Columbia is again urging the United States to reject these unfair duties on Canadian softwood lumber. “We believe that the upcoming challenge will once again result in a ruling in Canada’s favour, and we look forward to continuing to work with the federal government to advance our mutual interests on this vitally important trade file.”

Canada welcomes the most immigrants in a single year in its history

ARE YOU IN DEBT?

Government reaches target of 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021 With the significant exception of Indigenous people, all Canadians originally come from somewhere else. The story of immigration fills many chapters in the history of Canada—including the most recent one. To support Canada’s post-pandemic recovery and chart a more prosperous future, the Government of Canada set a target of welcoming 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, as part of the 2021–2023 Immigration Levels Plan.

From closed borders to domestic lockdowns, global migration has been upended by COVID-19. But the employees of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) rose to the occasion and processed a record half a million applications in 2021. To achieve this, IRCC added resources, embraced new technology and brought more processes online. These changes are all permanent improvements to Canada’s immigration system.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced that Canada has reached its target and welcomed more than 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021. Surpassing the previous record from 1913, this is the most newcomers in As we continue to struggle with the a year in Canadian history. pandemic, we made the most of the This historic achievement is par- talent already within our borders. ticularly significant in the face of The majority of these new permanent the pandemic’s many challenges. residents were already in Canada on PAGE 6

temporary status. Most notably, we launched new programs to engage essential workers, health care professionals, international graduates and French-speaking newcomers. Family reunification is another pillar of our system, and we reunited spouses and children while enabling more families to sponsor parents and grandparents. Finally, with many countries closing their doors to refugees, we continued to offer the world’s most vulnerable shelter in Canada.

Canada needs immigration to drive our economy, enrich our society and support our aging population. One in 3 Canadian businesses is owned by an immigrant, and 1 in 4 health care workers is a newcomer. Business, labour market experts and economists all agree that immigration creates jobs, spurs innovation and helps address labour shortages. New Canadians contribute to communities across our country every day, and we will continue welcoming more of them as we build the Canada of tomorrow.

3 simple tips to boost your health at home

Stay active – keep moving. We all know this one, but it’s important. There are countless online workouts and yoga classes to try for free or by subscription, but you can also dance while cooking or doing the dishes, take jumping jack breaks, or go for a walk to mark the end of your workday. Every move counts, and so try to bring the fun into everyday activities. Get the right set up – ease your pain After a couple of years of working from home, it’s time to get serious about your home office setup if you haven’t already. Though you may be back in the office part or most of the time, hybrid work is likely here to stay.

Whatever your workspace looks like, making it ergonomic is crucial. It’ll save you a lot of neck and back pain or discomfort, eye strain and visits to chiropractors. Do your research and ask your friends and family what’s worked for them to help you find the best fit. Make sure your home is safe – test for radon Radon is a radioactive gas that’s in all our homes. If your home has a high level of radon, all the time you’re spending at home these days could be increasing your exposure and your risk of lung cancer. Long-term exposure to elevated levels of radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. The only way to know the radon level in your home is to test. You can buy an inexpensive DIY kit or have a professional come in and do the test for you. Find more information about radon testing at canada.ca/radon.

you can teach them. Think of all the skills that you have accumulated over the course of your life, such as cooking, sewing, knitting and barbecuing, and even more hobby-based talents like fishing, golfing or piano. Ask your grandkids what interests them so you can pass it on. Make regular plans to enjoy these hobbies together.

Use technology to help you bond with your grandkids in a meaningful way. These days there are many amazing genealogy companies that, after purchasing and sending off an easy nasal swab kit, can help you discover an ever-growing database of family history. 4 tips for mindful eating (NC) With busy schedules, we’re all guilty of eating lunch on the go or sitting down for dinner in front of a favourite show. Mindful eating can help, promoting a healthy lifestyle that lets us reconnect with what our bodies truly need.

Our bodies need about 20 minutes to signal to the brain that it has received enough food. Give your body a chance to feel full by slowing down your pace. If you’re used to shovelling back your food in haste, try putting your cutlery down in between bites, taking a sip of water, engaging in conversation and chewing your food thoroughly.

3. Track how food makes you feel People respond differently to different foods. Some might feel great after a big bowl of cereal, others not so much. While we can make foods morally equal, they’re not all nutritionally equal and this can have an impact on how they make our bodies feel. For example, most cows’ milk you find in grocery stores contains a mix of both A1 and A2 proteins, and some people have trouble digesting the A1 protein. Fortunately, making simple switches can help you ward off digestive discomfort. Try a2 Milk, which comes from Canadian cows that naturally produce milk with only the A2 protein and research shows can be easier to digest.

Mindful eating is the practice of paying attention to food. It involves slowing down to truly experience a meal and then paying attention to how the body feels — the tricky part is doing all that with observation instead Then, after a meal, take time to check in with yourself. Brain boosters for older adults (NC) There are plenty of things we do to keep our bodies healthy, like eating well, staying active and reducing stress. But how can we help keep our brains in tip-top shape too? It turns out that all the activities you do for a healthy body are also good for your brain because they contribute to lowering several risk factors associated with dementia, like mid-life obesity, smoking, harmful alcohol consumption and social isolation. Here are a few brain-healthy tips to

think about: Be active and eat well You can’t see the impact of exercise on your brain the way you can see it with your body. However, blood pumps through the brain when you exercise, and that can help keep your brain cells healthy. Go for a brisk walk, or dance in your living room to get your heart rate going. Fuelling your body and brain with a

well-balanced diet will also keep you going strong.

New DriveBC webcams help drivers plan ahead People can “know before they go” to better prepare for their driving routes, thanks to 13 new cameras and 33 more views added to the DriveBC webcam network in 2021. New cameras are installed annually at locations throughout B.C. so drivers can plan for traffic and weather conditions on the route ahead. UFV 2021 Year in Review. Returning to campus in challenging times It was a year of being apart, and then together, with care, at the University of the Fraser Valley as the university community navigated the second year of post-secondary education during a pandemic. To cap off the year, UFV again faced challenges as the November floods and highway closures disrupted in-class learning once again. Classes in January began as they had in the previous semester: mostly remotely, unless the learning required a physical presence in the classroom, lab, studio, or shop. End-of-year shows, Convocation, and other special events were mostly held online or postponed for another year. But the work of the university continued; almost 3,000 students graduated in June, and thousands of new students began their first classes in September. Zoom events and special lectures were well attended as people continued to adjust to new ways of interacting with their university.

For the fall semester, UFV returned to in-class, face-to-face learning, while continuing to offer up to 30% of its programming in a remote format. UFV recognized numerous award winners through special remote ceremonies, including student medalists and honorary degree recipients. The Governor General’s Gold Medal for top student in a master’s degree program went to Ryan Buhrig of Surrey, who earned a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice. The Governor General’s Silver Medal for top bachelor’s degree student went to Tanner Boos of Chilliwack, who completed a Bachelor of Science. The Governor General’s Bronze Medal for top student from a two-year program went to Alona Gu-

rieva of Langley, who earned an Early Childhood Education diploma. The Lieutenant Governor’s Medal went to Faria Firoz of Chilliwack, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Dean’s Medalists were Anmol Sharma (Science), Samantha Stables (Health Sciences), Yuki Yamazaki (Professional Studies), Sharon Timmermans (Integrated Studies), Isabelle St-Martin (Applied and Technical Studies), Gurgina Dinsa (Social Sciences), and Arsalan Sadiq (Humanities).

Andy Sidhu was reappointed for a second term as UFV Chancellor. The UFV Board of Governors and Senate officially approved a new Integrated Strategic Plan entitled IYAQÁWTXW: House of Transformation. The framework (i.e., mission, vision, values, goals, and strategic imperatives) provided by the integrated strategic plan will serve as the foundation for all areas across the university.

Student speakers were Monik Jaura (Health Sciences), Veronica Kobes (Science), Pip Robertshaw (Professional Studies), Terisha Mitchell (Applied and Technical Studies), Belle UFV celebrated the opening of a Hernberg-Johnson (Humanities), and Shakespeare Reconciliation Garden on the Chilliwack campus and an IndigPaul Jaku (Social Sciences). enous Garden on the Abbotsford camUFV presented honorary doctorates pus, which features several carvings by to four Canadians who have made a Indigenous artist Rocky LaRock. significant contribution to their field There was a UFV connection to the and Canadian society. discovery of more than 200 ‘targets Retired general and huof interest’ that are likely unmarked manitarian Roméo Dallaire, graves on the grounds of the former filmmaker Andrée Cazabon, Kamloops Indian Residential School. teacher and LGBTQ activDr. Sarah Beaulieu, an archeologist ist James Chamberlain, and and faculty associate of the CHASI helicopter pilot and aviation Hub at UFV, worked in collaboration entrepreneur Cathy Press with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First were honored by UFV in a Nation, using ground-penetrating radar private ceremony on June 4. to locate and identify the sites. On the programming side, UFV introduced new international business minors, an online career mapping tool, and several micro-credentials. The College of Arts announced plans to provide 1,000 work-integrated learning opportunities for students by June of 2022. Students were involved in many activities, including the Hubbub celebration of CityStudio experiential learning projects, the Enactus club for business students, Student Research Day, and end-of-year art exhibits UFV’s Cascade athletic teams were sidelined from competition for the first half of the year due to COVID-19 restrictions but were able to relaunch in the fall of 2021. The men’s and women’s soccer teams made the playoffs, and the men’s squad advanced to the Canada West Final Four. The men’s golf team were silver medalists at the Canada West championships, while the women placed fourth. The men’s and women’s basketball teams got off to strong starts in conference play, while the volleyball teams made their debut in Canada West. Schedules for the basketball and volleyball teams were disrupted when the Cascades were unable to travel due to highway closures. In November 2021, UFV was again faced with challenges as the disastrous storms and flooding closed transportation routes, including Highway One between Abbotsford and Chilliwack, and impacted many in the university community. UFV suspended classes for a week and then moved to remote learning for the remainder of November. UFV cooperated with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and the Abbotsford Community Foundation to launch the Abbotsford Disaster Relief fund, which to date has raised more than $2 million to aid in recovery efforts.

3 key steps to remember before buying or selling your home (NC) Entering the real estate market is big moment for anyone. And, whether you’re buying or selling your first home or your fourth, it’s also a major transaction. Taking a few simple steps can help make the process as smooth and successful as possible. Here are three to remember:

Cut down winter costs with these energy-saving tips (NC)By finding ways to save on energy during these months, you can combat impact on your wallet and help your home operate more efficiently, which is better for the environment, too. Kickstart your energy savings with these three tips: Lock in warmth The first step toward saving energy in your home is to stop the heat inside from escaping. Check for drafts and extra space around your windows and doors where you can feel cold air and apply weather-stripping or sealant. Curtains and blinds can also play a leading role. Allow natural heat and sunlight in by opening them in the morning and closing them in the evening to trap warmth. Your ceiling fan can also help your home feel warmer. Change its rotation to pull cold air upwards and push warm air near the ceiling down. Be water savvy

Winter home maintenance: A checklist

Saving can be as simple as finding ways to make everyday tasks more energy efficient, such as doing laundry in cold water and only running the dishwasher when it’s full.

If there is anything you feel unclear about when it comes to somebody else, you should set out to discuss it. This could clear up presumptions or uncertainties on both sides. An opportunity can present itself which will allow you to make future plans that can be pleasure orientated or that will satisfy your priorities more so.

Your interest will be moving forward in a manner that will open you up to greater freedom and enjoyment in the long term. Other people involved might be expecting more than you can realistically manage. There will be challenges but as long as you focus on the details or work that needs to be done you will eventually get there.

You could realise the amount of work involved in something you thought was important, isn’t worth it. You may need to change your priorities based on the expectations of somebody else. Before you do, you should consider the amount of control or the limitations that come with this. Your independence can’t be put aside

Work hard on finalising things that need to be put into place so that you will be free to enjoy yourself more. It will not hurt to question any pressure somebody else is placing on you to perhaps get things done more quickly. It might simply mean pointing out the amount of work involved if matters are to be dealt with properly.

Anything that has been important to you on a personal level during the last two years can now reach a stage where you feel you are in a better position to do things your way. You might get some opposition from somebody who thinks they know better but there will be ways of either getting support or working around them.

Follow what you believe is the most balanced approach when it comes to putting things in place or dealing with family matters. Don’t be influenced by somebody attempting to make you feel guilty or perhaps sorry for them. You need to act on what you consider you can handle because it will work best and be the most efficient.

It may be necessary to make a final decision to end something that has proved inefficient or a big time wasting exercise, otherwise it can hold you back over the next 2 years. You need to weigh up opportunities that you know you can enjoy against accepting limitations that can result in restricting potential future growth.

Being prepared to be serious, as well as putting in the effort required to get a good foundation in place that you can continue to develop long term has every potential to reap successful rewards. It might take a while to be as financially satisfying as you would like but if you are determined to persist, your rewards will materialise.

In any situation where discussion will take place be cautious as to the underlying agenda of those involved. This is not a time for you to be forthright with your ideas to get things going. You need to see what is put forward. That way it will become obvious as to where there is support, as well as the opportunity to have your say.

Catching up with friends or acquaintances and be most relaxing and enjoyable as long as you ensure your responsibilities don’t suffer. There is no reason to spend more money than you feel comfortable about. Stand your ground in any situations where somebody else expects you to accept the way they want to do things.

Finances could encourage you to reconsider something that was an important priority, especially if it involved travel or that it was for reasons of getting away from it all. You could enjoy the feeling of having money behind you for when the unexpected arises. Being able to let your mind wander can be a relaxing practice.

There is little point in attempting to avoid responsibilities, especially with people who have authority in some way. You will benefit more from being prepared to negotiate in such a manner that you give assurances you will see things through. From your standpoint, you need visualise yourself taking these future directions.

Tahira Kashyap fought for herself and all of us : Saiyami When Tahira Kashyap’s debut feature film Sharmaji Ki Beti went on floors earlier in the year, leading lady Saiyami Kher saw it as a moment of triumph. It took four years for the film, also starring Divya Dutta and Sakshi Tanwar, to go from the drawing board to the set. In an earlier interview, Kashyap had revealed how she stood her ground while prospective producers suggested that she include a romantic track to make the film more bankable, and seek more saleable stars. Her search for like-minded collaborators ended when she met producers Atul Kasbekar and Tanuj Garg. Recounting her casting, Kher says, “A few years ago, Tahira

came home for the narration of Sharmaji Ki Beti. She was convinced that I fit the part. Atul Kasbekar and Tanuj Garg were also on the same page. It all felt too good to be true. But like films, our lives also have these twists and turns. Tahira was unwell; it was scary, and heart-breaking. Obviously, the film went on hold. Then COVID [struck] and the world shut down.” Kher says that the movie saw the light of day due to Kashyap’s resilience. “Through all the ups and downs, Tahira fought for herself and all of us. It never felt like this was her debut feature.

I've realised health is indeed our biggest wealth : Zareen Khan

I'm a sum of all my decisions : Priyanka She has been in the acting business for 18 years and it has not been easy. Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who is currently creating waves internationally with her powerful performances, says she is a sum of all her decisions and is proud to be where she is today. Priyanka made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with ‘The Hero: Love Story of a Spy’. She was later seen in movies such as ‘Fashion’, ‘Krrish’, ‘Barfi!’, ‘Agneepath’, ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Mary Kom’. It was in 2015, when she made her debut in Hollywood with the show ‘Quantico’ and since then there has been no stopping her. Her latest international release is ‘The Matrix Ressurections’ starring Keanu Reeves. Talking about her over a decade-long-journey, Priyanka said: “It’s been a lot of walking, I can tell you that.” She shared that she had her share of ups and downs. “It’s been a lot of walking forward. It’s been a lot of ups and downs. It’s not been easy. I am a sum of all my decisions and I am very proud to be where I am,” Priyanka added. Looking forward, Priyanka has recently wrapped up shooting for the series ‘Citadel’. It also stars Richard Madden and Roland Moller. The series will also inspire spin-offs set in Italy, India, Spain and Mexico, all of which will explore the deeper layers of the storylines and will centralise into the main series.

Actress Zareen Khan is having a lowkey year end. Her mother has been unwell and she's been with her, making sure her mother is well looked after. We asked Zareen how she would sum up 2021 if she looked back at it and she says, "Health is indeed our biggest wealth and I have realised the same in the last two years. My mother, my rock and best friend, has been unwell for the past one year and it has been a trying time. This year, I wish to be her Secret Santa and give her all the happiness that I can and make her troubles disappear."

'Let's pray for a safer world' For someone who loves travelling, Zareen enjoys heading to snowy places, but she hasn't been anywhere of late. She hopes to do that once things are better next year. Says the Bollywood actress, "Let's pray for a safer world and that things improve in the pandemic. We all have seen such a tough time and I really hope we can overcome that and go back to the times that were." On the work front she's looking forward to more in 2022. "I'm a positive person and I'm gearing up for the new year," she adds.

I told Deepika it wasn’t a long role, but significant one : Kabir Khan Last week’s release, 83 has Ranveer Singh at the front and centre offering a retelling of India’s victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The actor, who portrays then-captain Kapil Dev, is aided by a strong ensemble cast that makes up the onscreen Indian cricket squad. While the spotlight is naturally on them, Deepika Padukone does justice as Dev’s wife, Romi Bhatia. Casting Padukone in such a brief role might be an unusual decision, but director Kabir Khan says she was the only choice to essay the part. “When I was writing the screenplay, I realised Kapil is incomplete without Romi. There is a strong energy behind him in the form

Tusshar Kapoor turns author with 'Bachelor Dad' of Romi. I had access to Deepika and could ask her to play the role, but [the fear was that] I may end up overcasting. When you cast a superstar like Deepika and the screen time [offered] is not much, you can go wrong,” admits the filmmaker. But the more he studied Romi’s character, the more he saw Padukone in it. “Deepika has such great energy on screen. So, I wanted her to establish that energy in the film. I told her it was not a long role, but a significant one. She was so moved by the story that she said, ‘I want to be part of this.’” Padukone’s belief in the material also led her to come on board as one of the producers.

Actor-producer Tusshar Kapoor announced his debut book "Bachelor Dad", which will shed light on his journey to fatherhood. Kapoor opted for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and became a single parent to son Laksshya Kapoor through surrogacy in June 2016. The 45-yearold actor said the book, published by Penguin India, will paint an "honest picture" about his life. "I've been lucky that I've had the support of some amazing people on this journey but my decision to become a single father also raised several questions which I have tried to address on various media platforms, though the message has often been lost in translation," Kapoor, known for the "Golmaal" film series and "Shootout at Lokhandwala", said in a statement "Perhaps that's why I'm feeling joyous now, because part of my objective to write this book was to share an honest picture about my life, and that will finally be fulfilled," he added. The actor said the book is his story in his "voice" and hopes readers feel inspired to be more "honest and a little more brave".
