Enhanced safety measures, delayed return to school to support safe, in-person learning

full return to school for students in kindergarten to Grade 12 will be delayed until Monday, Jan. 10, in order to give public health and B.C. schools additional time to adapt to the impacts of the Omicron variant on communities and schools, and to implement enhanced safety plans to support the continuation of in-class learning. During this time, schools will be open for limited numbers of students in particular need. Districts will be communicating out to families about how this process will work. “Schools have safety protocols in place that have kept students and staff in school over the past two years, but as the pandemic changes, our protocols must change, too,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer. “That’s why schools will be implementing enhanced public-health measures to ensure we can continue the in-person learning that is so important for well-being and mental health.” The delayed return is supported by an Order from the Provincial Health Officer, which applies to all public and independent schools in British Columbia. While students will return on Jan. 10, staff will return on Jan. 3 and 4. This will allow schools to implement enhanced safety measures and proactively implement continuity of learning plans.

Indigenous rightsholders and education partners, including teachers, parents and school administrators. As the ministry has done throughout the pandemic, safety measures for schools will continue to be updated as needed in consultation with public health.

How to sleep through the night (NC) Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep to be their best. But many of us don’t get enough. That can cause irritability, depression, high blood pressure and slow reaction time. Here are a few things you can do at any age for a restorative night’s rest.

like sleep apnea or if you grind your teeth at night. In these instances, a simple machine or night guard can boost your quality of sleep immensely. 5. Mind when you eat.

Having a heavy meal within an hour or two of lying in bed can cause heart1. Set a routine. burn or stomach discomfort and make Try going to bed and waking up you have to pee. But don’t starve at about the same time every single day. You’ll get into a rhythm so waking and sleeping feel natural. If you like a lazy weekend morning, try slow-start activities like reading or listening to music yourself either: a hungry, grumbling stomach can also keep you up at night.

with a cozy cup of tea or coffee. 2. No napping. As tempting as it might be, taking a nap in the afternoon means you might not be as tired when your bedtime comes around, which will make it harder to fall asleep. 3. Stop with the screens. Turn off the tv and put down your phone about two hours before your bedtime. The light from your devices is thought to interfere with your body’s natural rhythms. 4. Check your health.

It can be as simple as writing down your tasks for tomorrow or doing a short meditation before going to sleep. Whatever you do, try to keep your worries out of the bedroom so you can drift off peacefully. 7. Check your genetic profile. According to a recent study by The DNA Company, 35 per cent of people have a gene that leads to interrupted sleep patterns. They suggest that variations in our genes affect our sleep in other ways too, such as making some of us feel stress for longer periods than others. By getting your genetic profile, you can learn how your genes affect your sleep so you can find the most effective tips for you.

Most Common Personal Injury Claims in Winter and How to Prevent Them

Winter can be a dangerous season as temperatures begin to drop. Injuries, hospitalizations, and liability claims increase in winter months due to certain common accidents. So what are these common accidents? And most importantly, what are the steps you can take to prevent them?.

Most Common Accidents Personal Injury Lawyers See In Winter The increase in personal injury claims in winter is related to the harsher weather. Snow, ice, and rain can create treacherous conditions. Shorter, darker days during the winter season increase the challenges by reducing visibility. The most common accidents personal injury lawyers see in winter are: 1.

Motor vehicle accidents.

Impacts of climate change underline work to build a cleaner B.C. In a year marked by the escalating impacts of climate change, the Province took important steps to drive down carbon pollution and build a stronger, cleaner British Columbia for today and generations to come. This work was headlined by launching the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030, a stronger and more ambitious plan to reduce climate pollution, protect B.C.’s communities and build a more sustainable economy. “With extreme flooding and out-ofcontrol wildfires, British Columbians felt the impacts of climate change all around us this year,” said Premier John Horgan. “The scale of the climate emergency we’re living through demands we act with even greater urgency, and with our ambitious CleanBC plan, we’re working to protect communities and build a stronger, cleaner economy. Our government is bringing people and businesses together to rise to the challenge and seize the opportunity to create a brighter future everyone.”

with interim targets to reduce climate pollution and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Stronger regulations will nearly eliminate industrial methane emissions by 2035. With a commitment to increase the price on carbon pollution to meet or exceed the federal benchmark, the Province is also supporting people who may have trouble making the switch to cleaner choices with the climate action tax credit. Making homes and vehicles more efficient New net-zero requirements mean no new climate pollution will be added to the atmosphere from new buildings built after 2030. The strengthened CleanBC plan also encourages using low-carbon building materials in construction, such as mass timber.

I like creating memories wherever I go Anjini Dhawan The winter season is getting folks to enjoy the cold weather and of course, travel a little, too. Anjini Dhawan shares why she loves this time. Says the actress, “Winters are the best! I love dressing up during this time and I love that I can finally get out my thigh high boots and cute sweatshirts. Curled up in my blanket with some hot chocolate watch movies and be cozy. I’m currently in Dubai and enjoying it here.” Anjini seems to have made the city her go-to place. She adds,

“I’ve literally gone to Dubai twice in two months! It’s one of my favourite getaways only because it’s so close by and you literally feel like you’re in a completely new place when you are here. I love the food, I literally only eat, eat, eat when I’m here,” she laughs, adding, “A lot of my friends were there, too so it was fun meeting them after a while! We had a few fun beach and shopping days.” She’s also been posting a peek into her travel album on Instagram. Says

Harsh Kapoor is the most knowledgeable person about cinema : Janhvi Kapoor Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor followed up his debut, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Mirzya, with the vigilante drama Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. While he earned critical acclaim for his role in Vikram Motwane’s much-loved project, AK vs AK, his film Spotlight by Vasan Bala, a part of the anthology Ray, earned a Filmfare OTT Awards nomination for the Best Film. The star has never shied away from taking an unconventional route. While there is no mystery about Harshvardhan Kapoor's taste in films, Janhvi Kapoor spoke about the same during a recent interaction. The young star said, "Harsh Bhaiya is the biggest movie buff. I think he is the most knowledgeable about cinema - world cinema, Hindi cinema." Janhvi Kapoor cheekily also asked Anil Kapoor, "I think a lot of Chachu's (Anil Kapoor) successful decision off late have been attributed to Harsh Bhaiya, right?" To which Anil Kapoor happily agreed and said, "I have gained a lot from Harsh and his new-age vision and taste." Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor has been the force behind many story lines, displaying his understanding of cinema. The newage star has been a part of films like Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Ray and AK vs AK. Meanwhile, his last offering, Spotlight from Ray, earned massive acclaim from inside and outside the industry.

I won’t be your normal actor : Harnaaz Sandhu

Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu doesn’t mince words when accepting that she has her heart set on Bollywood. “I am actor by profession, and I have been part of theatre for 12 years,” says the beautypageant winner, who brought home the coveted crown 21 years after Lara Dutta last bagged it for India. Sandhu has featured in Punjabi films like Yaara Diyan Poo Baran and the yet-to-be-released Bai Ji Kuttange. She made her television debut with the show, Udaariyaan. With her latest win propelling her into the limelight, she now hopes to venture into the Hindi film industry. “However, I don’t want to be a normal actress. I want to be one of those who are very influential, and who break stereotypes by choosing strong characters, being wise, and inspirational.” But even as she plans to train attention to her acting career, Sandhu says she will be equally devoted to using her platform to further several causes. “Obvious [issues] plaguing our society are climate change and women empowerment. They are close to my heart. I have seen my mother [advocate] for the causes. I plan to use my win to not only [celebrate] my crown, but also address the responsibility that come with it.” Although she bagged the top spot at a beauty pageant, the Chandigarh-born model is irked when people attribute winners’ success to their physical appeal alone. “There are a lot of people who say [I] won because [I] have a pretty face. But I know the amount of effort that went behind it. Instead of indulging in argument, I’d rather work hard to make them realise [my worth]. This is the stereotype that I want to break. This [win] is a lot like an Olympic [win]. When we appreciate a sportsperson who represents the country, why can’t we [appreciate] beauty pageant winners? However, mindsets are changing, and I am happy to be breaking stereotypes already.”

Vaani preps for a fresh innings Well aware that she was set to take on one among the riskiest roles of her career as a transgender woman in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, Vaani Kapoor is evidently glad that her efforts bore results. “My heart is filled with the love and appreciation I have received from viewers. What a great way to finish 2021! I am looking forward to my journey,” says the actor. Up next is Shamshera, in which she collaborates with Ranbir Kapoor. The March 18 release is a period drama, also featuring Sanjay Dutt. this film, I will showcase another side [of my skill-set]. The film has a dream team. Working with a director like Karan Malhotra was great because I have learnt a lot from him. Associating with an actor of Ranbir’s calibre was great too. Hopefully, audiences will appreciate the work we have put forth as a team.”

New DriveBC webcams help drivers plan ahead People can “know before they go” to better prepare for their driving routes, thanks to 13 new cameras and 33 more views added to the DriveBC webcam network in 2021. New cameras are installed annually at locations throughout B.C. so drivers can plan for traffic and weather conditions on the route ahead. This is especially important during winter and as drivers plan trips on unfamiliar routes due to road closures resulting from November’s washouts. Some of the new cameras and views added to the network include: Balfour Inland Ferry Terminal: located on Highway 3A in the West Kootenay area. The old camera was replaced and provides improved views of the Balfour inland ferry terminal lineup, with an additional south-looking view of the ferry loading ramp. This was done to support the ongoing terminal upgrades. Kootenay Bay Inland Ferry Terminal: located on Highway 3A in the West Kootenay area at Kootenay Bay Ferry Landing. Feel unsafe driving in a snowstorm? How to build confidence (NC) As Canadian drivers, we still need to get to our destinations whether the forecast calls for clear skies or a major storm. But if you feel unsure driving in heavy snow, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey, one in five Canadians feel unsafe driving on winter roads, and 42 per cent are particularly concerned about black ice.

Outdoor activities to do with your kids this winter (NC) Many of us are dreading another pandemic winter cooped up at home. But instead of worrying, now is the time to plan some fun things to do with the family outside the house when it’s cold or snowy. Here are some creative ideas kids and parents are sure to love:

Fortunately, there are ways to stay in control of the situation as you navigate treacherous weather. Here are some tips from the experts at OK Tire:

Embrace friluftsliving We’ve all heard of hygge, the Danish idea of a cozy home. This year, you can try another Scandinavian concept called friluftsliv. Part of Norwegian culture, it literally means “free air life” and is all about being one with nature even when the weather isn’t ideal. Go for a walk in the park and pay attention to your surroundings, whether it’s the soft song of winter birds or the beauty of a fresh snowfall. Try something new There are plenty of fun winter sports we’ve heard of but never given a try. Why not challenge the whole family to explore a new activity? Curling, snowshoeing and ice fishing are easy enough for almost all ages and can be quickly learned while practicing social distancing. Not feeling too

sporty? You can try snow sculpting or painting a gorgeous wintry landscape. Go on a local road trip While a vacation to a tropical beach may be out of the question, there are many beautiful and exciting places to explore in your own province. Whether it’s a day trip or weekend getaway, look for something an hour or two away that piques your interest, like a vast lake, hiking trail or frozen waterfall Before hitting the road, make sure to keep your family safe by installing winter tires on your vehicle. While not all tires are created equally and performances vary, the differences become greater when a tire wears. So choose one built to last, like the Michelin X-Ice Snow, which has been tested and proven in Nordic test centres under the most rigorous and extreme winter driving conditions.

4 tips for staying healthy this winter (NC) Most of us are venturing out of our homes more often this winter, with schools and offices reopening. This means it’s important to do everything we can to stay healthy for an enjoyable season. Here are some tips to remember: 1. Eat a balanced diet. What we put in our body fuels us and helps protect us. Even though the holidays and hibernating on the couch during weekends can tempt us to reach for processed snacks, balance out indulgences with more nutritious foods. Fresh fruits and veggies are

available throughout the season, so be 3. Try partnering up with a friend therapist or dermatologist. or family member to get some quality time together and maintain motivation. 4. Drink fresher water.

Canadian private and public drinking water supplies are generally of excellent quality. Whether it’s supplied by a municipal system or a private water well, water can carry contaminants that are harmful or cause the water to taste off. Use a DIY at-home test kit from My Water Quality to make sure your water is pure. Simply follow the instructions and use the courier service that is included with the testing kit to ship your sample to an accredited laboratory. An easy-to-read report card will arrive within five to 20 days and provide you with all the results.

If there is anything you feel unclear about when it comes to somebody else, you should set out to discuss it. This could clear up presumptions or uncertainties on both sides. An opportunity can present itself which will allow you to make future plans that can be pleasure orientated or that will satisfy your priorities more so.

Your interest will be moving forward in a manner that will open you up to greater freedom and enjoyment in the long term. Other people involved might be expecting more than you can realistically manage. There will be challenges but as long as you focus on the details or work that needs to be done you will eventually get there.

You could realise the amount of work involved in something you thought was important, isn’t worth it. You may need to change your priorities based on the expectations of somebody else. Before you do, you should consider the amount of control or the limitations that come with this. Your independence can’t be put aside

Work hard on finalising things that need to be put into place so that you will be free to enjoy yourself more. It will not hurt to question any pressure somebody else is placing on you to perhaps get things done more quickly. It might simply mean pointing out the amount of work involved if matters are to be dealt with properly.

Anything that has been important to you on a personal level during the last two years can now reach a stage where you feel you are in a better position to do things your way. You might get some opposition from somebody who thinks they know better but there will be ways of either getting support or working around them.

Follow what you believe is the most balanced approach when it comes to putting things in place or dealing with family matters. Don’t be influenced by somebody attempting to make you feel guilty or perhaps sorry for them. You need to act on what you consider you can handle because it will work best and be the most efficient.

It may be necessary to make a final decision to end something that has proved inefficient or a big time wasting exercise, otherwise it can hold you back over the next 2 years. You need to weigh up opportunities that you know you can enjoy against accepting limitations that can result in restricting potential future growth.

Being prepared to be serious, as well as putting in the effort required to get a good foundation in place that you can continue to develop long term has every potential to reap successful rewards. It might take a while to be as financially satisfying as you would like but if you are determined to persist, your rewards will materialise.

In any situation where discussion will take place be cautious as to the underlying agenda of those involved. This is not a time for you to be forthright with your ideas to get things going. You need to see what is put forward. That way it will become obvious as to where there is support, as well as the opportunity to have your say.

Catching up with friends or acquaintances and be most relaxing and enjoyable as long as you ensure your responsibilities don’t suffer. There is no reason to spend more money than you feel comfortable about. Stand your ground in any situations where somebody else expects you to accept the way they want to do things.

Finances could encourage you to reconsider something that was an important priority, especially if it involved travel or that it was for reasons of getting away from it all. You could enjoy the feeling of having money behind you for when the unexpected arises. Being able to let your mind wander can be a relaxing practice.

There is little point in attempting to avoid responsibilities, especially with people who have authority in some way. You will benefit more from being prepared to negotiate in such a manner that you give assurances you will see things through. From your standpoint, you need visualise yourself taking these future directions.
