What about your other vaccination status? (NC) Vaccines have been at the forefront of almost every conversation over the past year, but do you know if you’re up to date on your routine vaccinations? The reality is that one-in-five adults over the age of 55 aren’t up to date on their vaccinations or are unsure of their status. This is concerning, as Canadians are busier than ever with demanding work lives and commitments taking over their evenings and weekends. Stress, whether from being busy or a fear of missing out, can take a heavy toll on your body and immune system, and it may contribute to some diseases. Easy healthy food resolutions that are achievable all year long (NC) The start of the year is a great time to re-evaluate our lifestyle habits. This includes the food we eat, so we can make sure that we’re nourishing our bodies. While it can seem hard to get started, try these simple and achievable resolutions for 2022.

Top health and wellness trends in 2022 (NC) The core elements of staying healthy, such as eating well and exercising often, may never change. WHAT YOUR SWEAT SAYS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH: SFU RESEARCH Sweating it out through exercise may be a New Year’s resolution but it could also help to provide new insights into the state of your health, according to new sensing technology being developed at Simon Fraser University. SFU researcher Woo Soo Kim is part of an international research team that is developing a low-cost, 3D-printed wearable sweat sensor. The research is being carried out in SFU’s Additive Manufacturing Lab in collaboration

health factors, including stress and nutrition. “The chemical composition and physical information derived from sweat are of great value in terms of how it reflects human health status,” says Kim. “Direct sweat collection from the skin surface is an easy-toperform, straightforward method that avoids privacy concerns in physical implementation. These features mean that sweat has the potential to become a widely accessible sample type that

According to Kim, innovation in technology design over the past decade has seen the rapid development of wearable sensors—including sweat sensors. These wearable sensors can assess an individual’s health by analyzing the chemicals and other health information contained in sweat. Unlike collecting and testing other biofluids such as saliva or blood, the method is non-invasive and does not require assistance. These sweat sensors can monitor human biochemical information during exercise, including ions or lactate levels, which can serve as indicators of hydration and overall physiological and psychological wellness. The data collected can also play a role in assessing various

can be monitored in a non-invasive manner.” While there is a growing range of low-cost wearable sensors that can collect and analyze sweat to assess a person’s health, Kim’s 3D printable model integrates mechanically flexible electro-chemical sensors and wireless communication functions. Typically, sensors can be attached to the skin using a flexible material such as foam, fabric, flexible plastics or rubber and ideally, be powered by wireless chargers. Sweat metabolites can provide important information that can effectively be used to evaluate the wearer’s overall health condition, notes Kim. However, he cautions that further research is needed to verify the correlation between information from sweat and blood, using in-vivo validation tests to advance meaningful bio-medical applications.

Local Charity’s Christmas Campaign Reaches 92% of Goal! The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle portunities that help people find a way Campaign in Abbotsford/Mission out of poverty, permanently. has raised more than $152,000 during the three-week campaign, just shy of their $165,000 goal. The funds come at a critical time as the organization is experiencing an increase in demand for programs and services during these difficult times. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Salvation Army has seen an increase in the number of individuals and families requesting services in the community. “This year has been tough for a lot of people,” says spokesperson Rob Studiman, Community Ministries Director. “Because of almost two years of living in a pandemic, a lot of people are still struggling. We are seeing a greater need and we rely on the public to help us meet the demand.” “The people in Abbotsford and Mission have been incredibly generous this holiday season,” comments Majors Ruth & Ian Gillingham. “Every year we ask them to help their community and every year they step up to meet the demand and we can’t thank them enough.” Every dollar raised through the Red Kettle campaign will stay in Abbotsford and Mission and will be used to fund vital programs and services. The Salvation Army works to provide the necessities: food, clothing, and shelter, while offering life-changing programs, such as Pathway of Hope, Supportive Independent Living, 12 Step as well as volunteer and part-time work op-

“Despite having to shorten this year’s Christmas Red Kettle Campaign due to the devastating flood, we came very close to reaching our fundraising goal. The last few weeks of 2021 brought unimaginable loss to many in our community. The community’s response to support one another was amazing! We are incredibly grateful to all those who contributed time and finances to support our fundraising effort. Thank you to all the merchants, kettle hosts and donors for making this possible. Your kindness and generosity enable us to continue to serve those in need locally”, shares Carolyn Pollard, Kettle Coordinator. With money still being counted, the organization is hoping to meet its provincial target of $5 million. Nationally the organization is hoping to achieve its goal of $21 million. Along with individual donors The Salvation Army is thankful for the ongoing generosity of numerous corporate partners, including Walmart, Costco, BC Liquor Stores, Canadian Tire, Save-on-Foods, Sobeys, Great Canadian Superstore, and many more, who give and generously allow Christmas Kettles to be placed at their stores.

Afghan human rights defenders arrive in Canada For 2 decades, Canadians have worked side by side with Afghan nationals to improve security, democracy and human rights in Afghanistan. Now Canada is welcoming people who face risks as a result of this vitally important work. The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced the arrival in Canada of over 250 Afghan refugees, including 170 human rights defenders, as government-assisted refugees. Canada has a long and proud tradition of standing up for human rights at home and abroad. In July 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) launched a human rights defenders immigration stream, making Canada one of the few countries in the world with a dedicated, permanent immigration program for those who protect

and promote human rights. The work of human rights defenders is essential to promote and protect the human rights of people around the world, and too often, they put their own lives at risk. Many of those arriving today have worked for decades documenting human rights abuses in Afghanistan and intend to continue their work in Canada with the assistance of Canadian and international non-governmental organizations. This latest group of arrivals is part of Canada’s humanitarian commitment to welcome vulnerable Afghan refugees—including women leaders, human rights defenders, persecuted PAGE 18

religious or ethnic minorities, LGBTI individuals, and journalists and people who helped Canadian journalists. The humanitarian program complements Canada’s special immigration program for Afghans who worked for Canada during and after our military mission. So far, Canada has welcomed approximately 6,750 Afghan nationals as part of the government’s commitment to resettle Afghan nationals. In the coming days, these newest refugees will be welcomed into their host communities and will quarantine with the support of local service provider organizations as they begin their new lives in Canada.

Should you be concerned about your indoor air? (NC) On average, people spend about 90 per cent of their time indoors. Indoor air can contain all kinds of particles, including dust, pet dander, and chemical pollutants and smoke entering from outside, or produced indoors by using incense, smoking

or cooking. A portable air cleaner, remove particles by pulling the air more commonly referred to as an air through a filter. purifier, is one way to help improve If you’re considering purchasing a indoor air quality in your space. unit, follow these tips for choosing Air purifiers work by removing very the best one: small particles in the air. Designed Look for a unit tested by Consumer to clean a single room, air purifiers Reports or certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). Check the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). As a general guideline, the smoke CADR should be equal at least two-thirds of the room’s area. If your room has higher than 8-foot ceilings, or if the outdoor conditions are extreme (from wildfire smoke, for example), consider a higher CADR. Consider an air purifier with a highefficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which can trap smaller particles than a non-HEPA filter can. Some devices also include an activated carbon or other absorbent filter to remove gases such as volatile organic compounds.

Follow manufacturer instructions for placement and operation to ensure good airflow. Generally, higher fan speeds and longer run times will increase the amount of air filtered. Consider selecting a unit with a lower noise rating. Avoid air purifiers that produce ozone, such as electrostatic precipitators and ionizers, as ozone can impact your health. Air purifiers that use UV light or photocatalytic oxidation also produce ozone and are not effective at removing harmful particles from the air. If you choose an electronic air purifier, make sure it is tested and produces low levels of ozone. The California Air Regulatory Board lists units that have passed testing for ozone emissions. Don’t forget to clean or replace the filter as recommended by the manufacturer. Find more information on keeping a healthy home at canada. ca/healthy-home.

Sweet dreams are made of these: 3 designer tips for a dreamy bedroom (NC) Getting a restful night’s sleep isn’t just important to our energy, it plays a key role in our overall wellbeing. To help you create a bedroom that encourages you to rest and relax, Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour and design expert, shares her top tips for a serene space. Make space for sweet dreams. If your goal is a tranquil bedroom, decluttering is a good place to start. “It’s easier to feel calm and relaxed when your space is free from clutter,” says Grech. To help store your favourite items, consider adding smart storage solutions into your space. “Bed frames with storage drawers and even using a chest of drawers as a nightstand are clever ways to add concealed storage to your bedroom.” Once you’ve tucked away all the items you need, but don’t need to see, out of sight you can focus on highlighting just a few favourite pieces for a calming, intentional esthetic.

Whether you want a space that gives you a spark to wake up, or a bedroom that invites you to cocoon under the blankets, there is a colour that can help create the ideal ambiance. “If you want to relax and unwind, consider soft, warm colours like Pale Moon OC108 that are often used for cozy and intimate spaces, or cool hues like Hint of Violet 2114-60 that create calm, yet refreshing atmospheres,” suggests Grech.

Looking for a bedroom that gives you energy to get out of bed in the morning? “Deeply saturated paint colours such as Mysterious AF-565 or Wild Flower 2090-40 energize and en- classic white paint is a perennial favourite, a pop of colour on the ceiling velop.” enhances a bedroom's character. New ICBC No-Fault Auto Insurance Model - What You Need to Know If you are not aware yet, ICBC implemented a new no-fault auto insurance model on May 01, 2021, also known as “Enhanced Care.” This new nofault scheme promises drivers annual savings on auto insurance fees - an average of $400 per year- and expanded access to recovery for those who need it. Sounds good, but only on the surface.

You are only eligible to receive a lump sum payment for compensation for your injuries if you sustain a permanent impairment, such as loss of mobility, amputation, or other everlasting damage to a part of your body or bodily function. Permanent impairments are categorized as either catastrophic or not catastrophic injuries. ICBC assigns injuries a percentage based on their level of impairment and category or type, and the lump sum amount you would receive is then calculated with the percentage assigned to your injury.

Taking a closer look, we can quickly identify how Enhanced Care does not actually benefit British Columbians in the unfortunate case of being injured in a motor vehicle accident, as it restricts their right to compensation As is to be expected, the most seand their rights to access BC courts vere and disabling impairments are assigned the highest compensation should a dispute with ICBC arise. amounts. you will not be able to sue the at-fault driver for compensation, except in very particular and limited cases. Under Enhanced Care, both parties can receive benefits for their injuries and wage loss after the crash, no matter who is at fault. There are also no significant consequences for the at-fault driver, other than an increase in their premiums.

As we mentioned before, under the new no-fault model, incidents where victims can sue the at-fault driver are limited. One of the circumstances in which a victim can sue is when the at-fault driver is criminally convicted of committing a specific criminal offence during the car crash. However, it is important to note that the at-fault driver must not just be charged, or plead to a lesser offence, but they must be criminally convicted of the specific offence that allows the ability impairments is $264,430. Taking action to put future plans in motion could meet with some unexpected twists and turns involving other people. They might think you are moving too quickly or haven’t dealt with the details thoroughly enough. What they prefer could be more cautious or conservative. This might require you to reassess your priorities.

Whatever decisions you plan during January need to be viewed as an initial stage, so it would be wise not to attempt implementing them quickly, especially if somebody else is pushing for this. It will not be until mid February to mid March that you will be in a position of clarity and probably because of what goes on before that time.

Something needs to be brought to an end and while that should not be difficult to manage, wanting to do it could be the stumbling block. Clear vision of what the future will mean is difficult but there is an ending, new beginning energy involved. This could also require you to re-evaluate commitments up to early February.

There is a lack of clarity when it comes to others. It would be best that you observe their actions – it could tell you a lot more than what they have to say. Don’t rush into taking on any obligations, especially if you feel sorry for anybody or presume it will help. You need to wait and be asked and then carefully consider your answer.

Other people will prove interesting up to March. This could include coming into contact with people from the past from mid January to early February. They could seem very open with what they have to say or perhaps promise but you could find it will change, mystifying you. It will be from mid February onward it will make sense.

Don’t be too reliant on others when it comes to putting things in place – you will get a lot more done through getting on with these tasks yourself. You could begin to realise during January that daily routines need to be streamlined for complete success with changed structures. Complete clarity will arise from mid February.

This is a good time to present your ideas to somebody else – they could be keener to pay attention to them, even implement them than you anticipate. It won’t hurt to leave more regular routines to one side for the moment. You will enjoy having a break during January and perhaps visiting somewhere that has pleased you before.

Impulsive spending on something that could be useful in daily life can be worthwhile but on anything indulgent is a different matter. Family matters that haven’t been sorted in the past could come up again in January. You should take this seriously and give them thought. Final solutions can be established from mid February.

Social opportunities can come thick and fast this week. More practical things could curb being able to take advantage of them all though, so be sensible, otherwise, you could get over tired. From now to early February, put your mind to any details that need to be cleared up or plans that need to be put in place for this coming year.

Don’t be surprised to find yourself changing your mind or in a situation where you need to, from now to early February. This will concern something personal to you. Don’t expect to gain complete clarity yet – further contemplation could be required up to mid February. Then you can move ahead with certainty through to 10th March.

You will want things in order and could initially feel it is so. However, it would be best to make allowance for unexpected events or circumstances that could come out of nowhere and generate many distractions for you. Financial matters could need closer attention – there might be something you have forgotten to pay or allow for.

Hold yourself back from a serious commitment just because it feels right or seems to be what you have dreamed about. Don’t risk anything financially. There is something you need to contemplate to early February that could lead to re-looking at important priorities in life. You can make clearer decisions from 10th March.

It’s too early for me to decide what I am good at and stick to it : Aayush Sharma Every artiste has a bucket list of roles he wants to explore. While some wish to dabble in a genre, which surprises the audience, others are on a constant quest to outdo their last performance. Aayush Sharma, who is overwhelmed with the appreciation coming his way for ‘Antim: The Final Truth’, which featured him as a brutal gangster, has a wish-list, too. And if it is anything to go by, there is no stopping the actor from digging into every character that Bollywood has to offer. Aayush, who impressed the audience with his gangster act in ‘Antim’ after playing the quintessential hero in his debut film, ‘LoveYatri’, says, “I love Bollywood and I don’t want to be

slotted into any category or genre. I don’t want to be in a box. I want to explore everything, including comedy, romance, intense love stories and action. In fact, I would love to do a fun love story like ‘LoveYatri’, which makes people laugh. It’s like a typical popcorn entertainer, which people can watch without any stress.” But that’s not it! The actor has more to add to the list. He shares, “I would love to do a period film as well. I feel it will be quite challenging to go back in history. I have opened my horizon to everything. Also, it’s too early for me to decide what I am good at and stick to it. Chances of getting an opportunity to play a character like Rahuliya in ‘Antim’ are far and few between. The character had such a strong arc, which very few films offer.”

It's tougher to get a comedy script as compared to drama : Kirti Kulhari

Actress Kirti Kulhari is all set to surprise fans with her upcoming medical drama in an allnew avatar which will be released on the OTT platform. Co-starring Shefali Shah, Ram Kapoor, Seema Biswas, Aditya Srivastava and others, the series will see Kirti stepping into the shoes of a medical professional caught in a tight spot. Talking about her choice

of projects and inclination towards drama, the actress said, “There is so much more drama in drama as a genre, the characters are more complex and layered. I personally feel I like playing with complexity as a person hence portraying them on screen as well. It is a very challenging process as an actor and I truly enjoy that challenge.” “Also, I am an actor who likes to talk about different subjects when I touch a script. There is so much to talk about. It involves people, the drama has to be there. It's just something I love to do. It’s far tougher to get a good script in terms of comedy and others as compared to drama. I happen to be doing well with drama, and if it's categorized as serious stuff, sure, I would like to take every opportunity as an actor to take things that matter to me” she added. Meanwhile, Kirti is also keeping herself busy as she took over a new feature film ‘Nayeka’. Actor Bhumi Pednekar, Recently, she posted a picture of who recently wrapped up the script, written by Ajaykiran Nair shooting for Anubhav Sinha's and shared images of herself in a 'Bheed', revealed that she would police uniform as she announced now want to play a freedom fighter the film. She has now begun on the big screen, terming it as shooting for the film.

Mimi has made me more confident about taking risks: Kriti

Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon has indeed come a long way with rich content-driven and commercial films. This year, she will be seen in five films all of which belong to different genres thereby allowing her to push the boundaries with her work. The actress clearly outshone all in the last year with her outstanding performance in her solely lead film, Mimi. She credits her last year's release 'Mimi' for giving her the strength to take on more risks. Reflecting on the year gone by, Kriti says, "2021 was an amazing year professionally. The kind of love that 'Mimi' got has been extremely

overwhelming and has not only made me more confident as an actor to take risks but has also made me hungrier to push the envelope further". The hunger for playing challenging roles is not over for Kriti and so she does look forward to having more experimenting roles in the coming year. Stating her expectation from 2022 Kriti shares, "What excites me more is the fact that all these projects belong to completely different genres and worlds. So there’s a lot to look forward to in 2022!"

Emraan Hashmi’s serial kisser memes are so funny : Nikita Dutta From being a television actor to taking a plunge into Bollywood and then working with actors like Shahid Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan in interesting film projects Nikita Dutta has come a long way. Enjoying this phase of her career, in her earlier chat, the actress had opened up about the equation she shares with her co-stars from films. Now, she opens up about one of her latest co-actors who she says she best vibes with. The actor being, Emraan Hashmi, from her last horror flick. The duo shares quite a friendly equation, so much, that she doesn’t shy away from goofing around with him. The actor, who of late, has been doing quite serious roles was once known as the serial kisser of Bollywood. In his earlier films,

Emraan, would get multiple kissing scenes with his female co-stars leading him to win the title. It is this image associated with Emraan that Nikita finds a lot funnier especially every time she comes across a meme. She shares, “I am Emraan’s meme supplier. There are so many memes on social media about him and his serial kisser image. Every time I come across one, I just forward it to him and we have a good laugh.” While she loved to essay interesting roles in Hindi films so far, in an earlier chat with BT, Nikita had mentioned that she’s hoping to get a role in an action film. “I am a lot into fitness and so I would like to showcase it in a film soon. I want to challenge myself as an actor with the action genre,” she said.

her "dream role". The actor, who is known for her diverse film choices and portraying strong female characters on screen, said, "Playing a freedom fighter on screen would be my dream role! I'm fascinated by such remarkable personalities and it would be an honour for me to play someone like that on screen. I actually want to do that and I hope that the universe is listening to this. I would also like to be a part of a f a n t a s y project. There are so many different types of projects that I would love to explore and experience as an actor." The actor, who is gearing up for her next release, 'Badhaai Do'

with Rajkummar Rao, has many other projects in her kitty including Ajay Bahl's 'Ladykiller', Shashank Khaitan's 'Govinda Aala Re' with Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani, Karan Johar's 'Takht' and Aanand L. Rai's 'Raksha Bandhan', which would mark her second film with Akshay Kumar. "I think one common thread in all my films or the work I have done is that I am trying to break stereotypes. I have done that right from 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' and I do see myself playing ambitious, vocal, beautiful, gutsy women on screen because I relate to them deeply. I'm thrilled that I'm an artiste today and that I'm living my dream every single day and creatively expressing myself freely," added the 'Sonchiriya' actor. Bhumi made her acting debut in 2015 with 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha', opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, where she played the role of overweight but feisty girl Sandhya, which earned her rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Playing a freedom fighter on screen would be my dream role : Bhumi Pednekar
