Announcement Joginder Kaur Sidhu, age 95, a long-time resident of Mission, passed away on February 4, 2022, the result of medical complications and advanced age. Joginder was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family members at the time of her passing. Joginder was pre-deceased by her husband Kartar Singh Sidhu (1991) and her daughter Suhkwant Kaur Kingra (2016). She is survived by her children, Nahar Singh Sidhu (Harjinder), Malkeet Kaur Bhangu (Parmjit), Jaswant Singh Sidhu (Manjit), Bam Singh Sidhu (Sindy), and Gian Singh Kingra (Sukhwant). She is lovingly remembered by her 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Joginder was born in village Dhudike, Punjab, India on August 15, 1926. She came to Canada in July 1963 with three children where she reunited with her husband Kartar (immigrated in 1952) and her son Nahar (immigrated in 1959). Joginder’s three brothers (Indar Singh, Joginder “Shah” Singh and Mohinder Singh Gill) had arrived in Canada many years earlier and supported the immigration process for Kartar, Joginder, and their children. Her youngest Bam was born in Mission in May 1964. Joginder spent many years working manual labour at different farms across the Fraser Valley. She eventually settled at the Berryland Cannery in Maple Ridge until she retired in 1986 to provide permanent care to her husband after he suffered a stroke. Kartar, Joginder, and their children carried the tradition of assisting families immigrate to CanadaHer home was always open to individuals or families that recently arrived in Canada. From the 1960’s to 2020’s her home was full of love and laughter. She was a friend to thousands across Canada and India and there are comprehensive monthly phone bills to support. Her daily telephone “check-in” calls are dearly missed. Joginder was most proud of the fact that her three sons developed enviable work ethics, and each carried their family name with renowned dignity. Joginder was the family pillar with an ability to weather any storm. We are deeply saddened by our loss but blessed for the wonderful years that we Joginder Kaur Sidhu were privileged to share her company. Once you start a personal injury action, the defendant—usually an insurance company backed by a team of adjusters, investigators, and resources—will hunt for any evidence to cast doubt on your claim. “From rebuilding after the fires and floods to getting through this difficult wave of COVID-19, we have shown we can accomplish anything by working together,” said Premier John Horgan. “At a time when similar challenges have increased polarization around the world, people here in B.C. have pulled together. As we begin a new session, our government will be there to support people every step of the way – just as we have from day one.” The throne speech highlighted that B.C. has one of the highest vaccination rates in North America and the strongest economic recovery in Canada – with more people working today than when the pandemic began. Keeping people healthy and safe through the rest of the pandemic and building a people-centred recovery will continue to be top priorities for government.

Hindu Community expresses Grief over use of Deity Photo alongside Profanity in Lower Mainland Business Logo

T

he Hindu community of the lower mainland is deeply saddened by the offensive use of a Lord Ganesha (Hindu God) photo alongside profane language in a B.C company’s logo. Several members of the community alongside supporters were seen protesting in Surrey, holding signs that read “Shame on local politicians! They won’t support! And [they] only want votes!” While members have contacted the RCMP to notify them of the accused company, “Big D—k Energy Coaching” using the deity’s photo inappropriately, they were disappointed when advised that the police could not do anything about it.

congregation with all the Committee Directors has also come forward to express his concern over the issue. “Lord Ganesha is a symbol of knowledge, strength and wisdom for Hindus” says Sharma, “the fact than an incident like this has taken place is hurtful enough, but what is even more concerning is that the company, so far, is getting away with it.” While Sharma is hopeful that rectifications will be made, he says more people need to come forward to express their concern.

The accused company has not made any efforts to change their logo or offer an Sukh Sharma, a local resident, and apology over the wrongful use of the member of the Abbotsford Hindu Temple photo at this time.

Work experience grant’s fourth intake offers new options The fourth intake of B.C.’s Work Experience Opportunities Grant offers $2 million for flexible, paid work experience opportunities. Non-profit organizations have until midnight March 7, 2022, to apply for the grant, which helps support paid work experience opportunities for eligible British Columbians receiving income or disability assistance and Indigenous people receiving equivalent federal assistance.

12-week work experience placement of approximately 20 hours per week or a new option of approximately 10 hours per week for as many as 20 weeks. Mission Possible, a non-profit, community economic development agency in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, was able to provide 10 individuals with 12 weeks of supported work experience in 2021, thanks to a Work Experience Opportunities Grant of $50,000.

We know that the return on investment in supporting subsidized employment pays dividends to the community, and it can also change the trajectory of the participant’s life.” In addition, eligibility criteria have been revised to focus on skilled operators in the non-profit sector who have experience and expertise working with individuals with disabilities or significant barriers to entering the labour market. “The Work Experience Opportunities Grant supports community social services agencies to play a vital role as we continue to move forward into economic recovery,” said Niki Sharma, Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development and Non-Profits. “By providing inclusive employment supports, we can remove barriers so that more people are able to participate in paid work experience opportunities.”

Province, Abbotsford partner to develop new supportive housing

T

he Province, through BC Housing, and the City of Abbotsford have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) formalizing their commitment to work together to develop new supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness in the community.

“The City of Abbotsford continues to work hard to advocate and find partnerships that will increase the number of homes for those who are unhoused and provide support services to people living in encampments, such as on Riverside,” said Henry Braun, mayor, City of Abbotsford. “Having a memorandum of understanding isn’t just about one project – it’s a long-term commitment that we hope will help those who are at risk and experiencing homelessness.”

KT's: Your New Organic Shopping Experience KT’s is an endeavor to make your shopping experience a complete and absolutely enjoyable one. Locally and proudly owned by two enterprising entrepreneurs, this store carries an interesting mix of the conventional and modern and being a convenience cum grocery cum eatery offers a complete shopping experience.

“Our government is working hard to bring people living outside indoors where they can access the supports they need to stabilize their lives,” said Pam Alexis, MLA for AbbotsfordMission. “We’re proud to work with partners such as the City of Abbotsford to deliver housing for the people who need it most. This is one of the many steps our government is taking to break the cycle of homelessness, and I am excited to see it move forward.” As part of the MOU, BC Housing will apply to rezone the vacant city lots at 1640 and 1670 Riverside Rd. into a new permanent supportive housing building with approximately 50 new homes. If approved, construction would begin in fall 2022 and be completed by summer 2023. The new homes would be built adjacent to the existing Cole Starnes Place supportive housing building on the same property.

In addition to the development of new supportive housing, BC Housing installed a temporary trailer with washrooms and showers next to Cole Starnes Place in November 2021 to support people sleeping outdoors in Abbotsford. Taking action to put future plans in motion could meet with some unexpected twists and turns involving other people. They might think you are moving too quickly or haven’t dealt with the details thoroughly enough. What they prefer could be more cautious or conservative. This might require you to reassess your priorities.

Whatever decisions you plan during January need to be viewed as an initial stage, so it would be wise not to attempt implementing them quickly, especially if somebody else is pushing for this. It will not be until mid February to mid March that you will be in a position of clarity and probably because of what goes on before that time.

Something needs to be brought to an end and while that should not be difficult to manage, wanting to do it could be the stumbling block. Clear vision of what the future will mean is difficult but there is an ending, new beginning energy involved. This could also require you to re-evaluate commitments up to early February.

There is a lack of clarity when it comes to others. It would be best that you observe their actions – it could tell you a lot more than what they have to say. Don’t rush into taking on any obligations, especially if you feel sorry for anybody or presume it will help. You need to wait and be asked and then carefully consider your answer.

Other people will prove interesting up to March. This could include coming into contact with people from the past from mid January to early February. They could seem very open with what they have to say or perhaps promise but you could find it will change, mystifying you. It will be from mid February onward it will make sense.

Don’t be too reliant on others when it comes to putting things in place – you will get a lot more done through getting on with these tasks yourself. You could begin to realise during January that daily routines need to be streamlined for complete success with changed structures. Complete clarity will arise from mid February.

This is a good time to present your ideas to somebody else – they could be keener to pay attention to them, even implement them than you anticipate. It won’t hurt to leave more regular routines to one side for the moment. You will enjoy having a break during January and perhaps visiting somewhere that has pleased you before.

Impulsive spending on something that could be useful in daily life can be worthwhile but on anything indulgent is a different matter. Family matters that haven’t been sorted in the past could come up again in January. You should take this seriously and give them thought. Final solutions can be established from mid February.

Social opportunities can come thick and fast this week. More practical things could curb being able to take advantage of them all though, so be sensible, otherwise, you could get over tired. From now to early February, put your mind to any details that need to be cleared up or plans that need to be put in place for this coming year.

Don’t be surprised to find yourself changing your mind or in a situation where you need to, from now to early February. This will concern something personal to you. Don’t expect to gain complete clarity yet – further contemplation could be required up to mid February. Then you can move ahead with certainty through to 10th March.

You will want things in order and could initially feel it is so. However, it would be best to make allowance for unexpected events or circumstances that could come out of nowhere and generate many distractions for you. Financial matters could need closer attention – there might be something you have forgotten to pay or allow for.

Hold yourself back from a serious commitment just because it feels right or seems to be what you have dreamed about. Don’t risk anything financially. There is something you need to contemplate to early February that could lead to re-looking at important priorities in life. You can make clearer decisions from 10th March.
