Expanding access to mental-health supports for health-care, social service workers Health-care and community social services workers throughout British Columbia will be able to access more mental-health supports as the province expands tailor-made programs for the sector. The Government of B.C. has invested $735,000 to expand Care to Speak and Care for Caregivers – two unique programs that offer online peer support and targeted educational mentalhealth resources for health-care and community social services workers. Since 2020, the two services have reached more than 76,000 workers.
including workshops for those working in health care. “ M a n y health-care and community social service workers have experienced distress, anxiety, grief, depression and trauma when responding to the COVID-19 and poisoned drug emergencies,” said Jonny Morris, CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division. “Care to Speak provides free, confidential emotional support by people who get it, and offers a bridge into other services like the provincial Mobile Response Team. If you are a care provider, reach out for support. If you know someone who is, share this resource and show you care.”
“We have never asked more of our health-care workers as B.C. continues to fight two public health emergencies,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “Our government is expanding phone, text and virtual chat mentalhealth supports for those working in health care and social services so that the people that British Columbians rely on can keep helping others.” Care to Speak is available Monday
Through this investment, the Care to Speak service will be able to increase availability and ways for health-care workers in long-term and continuing care to connect to peers who have experience in the sector and who have been trained in active listening and can provide mental-health supports. Workers can also visit the Care for Caregivers website to access timely and tailored educational resources,

to Friday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., with additional hours on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Enhancing mental-health supports is an integral part of A Pathway to Hope, B.C.’s roadmap for building the comprehensive system of mentalhealth and addictions care that British Columbians deserve.

Drivers reminded to expect more horses, riders on roads
A
s warm weather draws more people outdoors, drivers in rural areas are reminded to stay vigilant and share the road with others, including horses and their riders. Horses and their riders are recognized road users under the Motor Vehicle Act. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are expected to share the roadway and give appropriate space to horses. Signs in rural areas alert drivers to use caution and be courteous when encountering and passing horses and riders. Drivers are advised to watch for these signs, especially at the start of any roadway or along narrow or winding rural roads. Even when signs are not present, people are reminded to share the road with all travellers to keep everyone safe.

Project Equality Day - Chetna Association of Canada
As a part of observing Buddhist Vesakh Week, Chetna Association of Canada hosted a meet and greet session with representatives of Aam Aadmi Party and Rashtrya Lok Dal Party at the Dr. Ambedkar Room in the Surrey Center Library. Ms. Jaskirat Mann of Abbotsford, is a national convenor (Canada) of Aam Aadmi Party while KP Chaudhary of New Delhi is the national Secretary of Rashtrya Lok Dal. The session was opened with the recital of Buddh Bandana. G.D. Gaddu, founder president of AISRO introduced KP Chaudhary while Dr. Sukhdev Mann of Aam Aadmi Party introduced Ms. Jaskirat Mann.
Manjit Bains, chair of Chetna’s Women Empowerment Committee, gave background on the Project Equality Day and acknowledged the support of various organizations and levels of governments for observing or proclaiming Dr. Ambedkar Day of Equality on the birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar, April 14. The project was launched in 2020 when City of Burnaby first proclaimed Dr. Ambedkar Day of Equality. This year, in 2022, in addition to City of Burnaby, City of Surrey, Province of British Columbia, Government of Tamil Nadu, along with various states and cities in the US and UK also observed Dr. Ambedkar Day of Equality on April 14. The Project Equality Day is a part of Chetna and AICS’ 2050 Goals which includes seeing equitable processes and frameworks for equality, liberty, justice, and fraternity.
British Columbians can access more in EV charger rebates
nesses and communities.
The Province and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) are making it more affordable for people to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in their homes, busi-
B.C. residents, businesses and municipalities can receive higher rebates for EV charging stations through the CleanBC Go Electric EV Charger Rebate and Fleets programs. For a limited time, funding will cover as much as 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs for EV charging stations, which is an increase from the previous 50% coverage. "With electric vehicles representing 13% of all new light-duty vehicles sold in B.C. last year, our province has the strongest adoption rate of electric vehicles in Canada. We're positioning ourselves to become leaders in the EV industry," said Bruce Ralston, B.C.'s Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. "We're working with our federal partners to increase rebates for home, workplace and fleet charging, and making it easier and more affordable for people to make the switch to electric vehicles."
With a $2-million investment through NRCan's Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) to top up the Province's EV Charger Rebate program, workplaces, condominiums and apartments can get a rebate for a Level 2 charging station for as much as 75% of purchase and installation costs to a maximum of $5,000. As many as 360 EV chargers will be installed through the program. "We're making electric vehicles more affordable and charging more accessible where Canadians live, work and play," said Jonathan Wilkinson, federal Minister of Natural Resources. "Investing in more EV chargers, like the ones announced today in British Columbia, will put more Canadians in the driver's seat on the road to a net-zero future and help achieve our climate goals." Through the CleanBC Go Electric Fleets program and in support of B.C. businesses that own and operate fleet vehicles, NRCan has invested $1.54 million through ZEVIP to top up rebates. Fleet operators can get combined rebates from NRCan and the Province for a Level 2 charging station as much as 75% to a maximum of $5,000 of purchase and installation costs, and 75% to a maximum of $75,000 for a directcurrent, fast-charging station. As many as 450 EV chargers will be installed through the program. CleanBC is a pathway to a more prosperous, balanced and sustainable future. It supports government's commitment to climate action to meet B.C.'s emission targets and build a cleaner, stronger economy.

Premier’s statement on family doctors in B.C. Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement following a meeting with representatives from Doctors of BC: “Minister Adrian Dix and I had a constructive discussion with Doctors of BC. I was pleased to have the opportunity to express how important primary care is to our health-care system, as doctors provide us with the confidence that someone will be there to help us when we get sick
ily physician is a real problem. They are left waiting hours for medical attention that, for many, could have been addressed with a visit to a family doctor. “While this is a problem across Canada, it is very acute here in B.C. I’ve heard from physicians throughout the province that they are both overworked and frustrated by the pressures they are under, which are compounded by the ongoing consequences of the pandemic.

It is through continued dialogue and co-operation with physicians that we will be able to provide solutions to provide transformational change to B.C. by building on our historic efforts. We can only make progress when we work together. “Going forward, the provincial government has committed to working closely with Doctors of BC on solutions, including a clear process with firm timelines in order to make tangible progress on this complex problem. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of family physicians was important and adaptable to the conditions as they moved from 62,000 visits by telehealth or virtual health in 2019 to 13.9 million visits during the pandemic. “The number of British Columbians without access to an in-person fam-
“This problem didn’t start yesterday. In 2003, there were 437,000 people unattached to a primary care practitioner and, by 2017, that number had doubled to 897,000. The impacts on B.C. families are clear today. Previous governments struggled with this problem and some efforts to address it were, unfortunately, abandoned. We will not abandon British Columbians. We have undertaken historic investments through team-based care in primary care networks, community health centres, Indigenous-led clinics, and urgent and primary care centres to expand access to public health care in this province. “Our government is committed to addressing this problem, but one path we will not take is privatization. Working with the other premiers, I have made it clear to the federal government that they must come to the table to address the lack of federal funding in health care throughout the country.”

STA’s 101 on Personal Injury Law Have you been injured in an accident or another harmful incident and are considering suing the atfault party but do not know where to begin? Or maybe you are unsure about how a personal injury lawyer can help you or what benefits you may be entitled to receive?. Today, I introduce you to the fundamentals of personal injury law and provide you with an overview of how a personal injury lawyer can help you. What is Personal Injury Law? Personal injury law (also known as tort law) allows victims of accidents or other wrongful incidents to file a civil lawsuit to claim compensation for damages, like medical expenses and wage losses. Compensation not only covers existing medical costs but can also include reasonable future expenses for your care, such as medication, equipment, ongoing rehabilitative treatment, assistance with housekeeping and personal care, etc. Personal injury law is often associated exclusively with bodily harm, but emotional damage, pain and suffering, and PTSD are also included in personal injury. Types of Personal Injury Claims Accidents, intentional acts, defective products, and defamation are all part of personal injury. Accidents include slip and falls, medical malpractice and motor vehicle accidents (subject to recent ICBC no-fault legislation). Intentional acts include activities that are purposely performed to harm you, such as assault and battery. Defective products include injuries caused by products that are defective or dangerous for human consumption. And last but not least there is defamation, which refers to actions that cause harm to your image, and can result in wage losses and emotional suffering and distress.
You will need to get familiar with multiple elements and terms when you begin a personal injury claim. Although every claim is different, plaintiff, defendant, settlement, and liability are probably the most recurrent terms you will hear during your claim.
be complex, delicate, and take a long time to settle or resolve. It is important you feel comfortable communicating with your legal team. Learn more about how a personal injury lawyer can help you on www. simpsonthomas.com.
Plaintiff: A plaintiff is the person who was injured from a wrongful act or accident and initiates a claim against the at-fault party in a court of law. To simplify it, a plaintiff is the person who starts the lawsuit.
Talk to STA’s Experienced Personal Injury Lawyers
Defendant: The defendant is the person whose actions allegedly caused an injury or loss to the plaintiff. The defendant is the person being sued. In many personal injury claims, the defence is funded by an insurance company from insurance purchased by the defendant. Settlement: A settlement occurs when the defendant and the plaintiff agree on compensation to resolve the claim. The defendant agrees to pay this amount, eliminating the need for a judge to resolve the controversy. Liability: In law, liability is the legal responsibility of the at-fault party to compensate the injured party. Sometimes, liability is 100% given to one party, but you can also be found partially liable for an accident. In this case, the calculation of your settlement will be reduced by the percentage of fault. E.g., if you are 10% at fault, you will recover 90% of the assessed damages. What Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Do?
Personal injury lawyers represent victims who have been injured due to an intentional or unintentional wrongful act from either another person, a company, entity or organization. They ensure your claim is adequately presented, craft a legal strategy, and negotiate or litigate a fair settlement or outcome. Having Elements of a Personal Injury a personal injury lawyer you trust is essential, as these claims can Claim PAGE 12

Paint colours for children’s rooms that stand the test of time (NC) Even the most style-savvy homeowners can struggle when it comes to decorating children’s rooms. Benjamin Moore colour and design expert, Sharon Grech shares three tips for creating a space that your child will love now, and for years to come.
(NC) Although the algorithms that rule the internet are pretty good at finding the content we like, sometimes you’re still stuck scrolling through social media, waiting for something to grab your attention or tickle your fancy. Here are some offbeat accounts that won’t let you down.
Murals Give any room a personalized touch by painting a mural instead of a solid accent wall. Look for durable paint which delivers an exceptional richness of colour and professional results that you can achieve at home in just one weekend. Neutral hues Gender neutral colours go with a range of styles and can appeal to younger children and more sophisticated teens as they grow up. For inspiration, consider Benjamin Moore colors such as Van Deusen Blue HC156, Green Hydrangea CSP-850, and Crystalline AF-485.
3 surprisingly good follows on social media
1. Your local library.
DIY together You may not always think about letting your child loose with a can of paint, but that’s why it’s a sure-fire way to engage them and create a space your child will love. “I always involve my kids in the painting process, especially for their own rooms. This is a great way to give them a sense of pride and involvement in the room’s design.” If you have leftover paint from additional projects buy a large canvas and let your child paint whatever they want – then you’ll benefit from accent art for your newly upgraded room.
To find book recommendations, author events and free workshops or classes, follow your local library on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. You might even get some behind-the-scenes stories about the origin of your favourite novel, or find out first about new book arrivals and be at the top of the request list to read them. 2. Your coolest zoo. If you’re in need of a serious dose of cuteness or simply a chuckle, follow a non-profit zoo or wildlife sanctuary. Think awe-inspiring and adorable upclose images of tiny owls, majestic tigers and playful otters. They’re sure
Harpreet Mann
to become your newest obsession, and you may just learn something too. 3. Your nearest farmers. Whether you’re a foodie or an agriculture enthusiast, you’ll want to follow Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada on Instagram. Meet the people of agriculture, the next generation of agricultural leaders and learn about the innovative work of agricultural scientists. You’ll be surprised and inspired by all the amazing work that goes into getting food from the fields to our plates. Follow them for a taste at @cdn_agriculture.

Tips to make moving easier for the whole family (NC) Moving can be exciting, but the whole experience can become overwhelming. Whether you’re heading into your very first place, downsizing or finding your forever home, there are a variety of tips and tricks you can use to ensure your move is as efficient and easy as possible. Ease the stress levels Moving can be hard on your family and your pets. Try to keep things organized by planning out your tasks ahead of time and enlisting help from family and friends. Recognize that emotions may be high as you get ready for a change, so do your best to be patient with yourself and others. If you have pets, remember that dogs and cats can be more attached to their home than you realize, and they can face high levels of anxiety when it comes time to move. A simple way to help them is to ensure you bring their favourite toys to their new space.
Finding someone to care for your pets a couple of days before and after the move is another great way to reduce stress for everybody. Make sure to cool off Summer moves are a great way to avoid moving your things in a snowstorm and get settled for a new school year, but they can get hot. Having cold water for movers and the family is important for everyone’s health. Keeping your pets cool and hydrated is also important. Pet fountains keep fresh water flowing even during the hottest summer days while you’re busy moving boxes. Take time to adjust Getting settled in your new home will take time, so take some steps to get oriented. The Reach Wins 2021 Governor General’s History Award
T
he Reach Gallery Museum is honoured to be the recipient of the 2021 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Community Programming. The organization and its collaborators are being recognized for the collaborative, multidisciplinary project Semá:th X̱ ó:tsa: Sts’ólemeqwelh Sx̱ ó:tsa/ Sumas Lake: Great-Gramma’s Lake. The project resulted in in a children’s history book, an exhibition, a puppet performance, and suite of educational resources. The working group responsible for the project comprises T h e t á x Chris Silver ( S e m á : t h First Nation), Xémontélót Carrielynn Victor (Cheam First Nation), and Kris Foulds and Laura Schneider from The Reach. Using memory and story, this collaborative project recalls a time when the lake was thriving, and invites the public to consider the ongoing repercussions of colonialism in their community. “My goal when we started the book was get the story out there to let everyone know about Semá:th X̱ ó:tsa (Sumas Lake), what it meant to our people, and how environmental changes have drastically impacted and changed our lives as a people,” says Chris Silver. “It’s important to acknowledge and respect our history and the history of S’ólh Téméxw, the land. It’s important to recognize our people and our place names for this land. It’s our history and it’s important. It is our Sqwélqwel: the truth as we know it.” The children’s book has been especially popular. Since its publication in November 2020, over 1,500 copies of the book have been delivered directly to Stó:lō communities, and an additional 1,500 were distributed PAGE 26
to school boards in Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack. The book was also picked up by education publisher Scholastic Canada Ltd. as a part of their Grade 3 Science Curriculum Resources. Since the lake temporarily returned during the 2021 floods in the Fraser Valley, this project has only become more timely. As artist Carrielynn Victor, who is responsible for the book’s illustrations, states: “recognition is important. It helps people near and far continue to observe how the lake
lives in the memory of the land, and when it rains long enough, we see the lake return to itself.”

also on the leading edge of climate action, building resilient communities and are preparing for the future. This new program will help communities of all sizes build a cleaner, better future for people across B.C.”
The program will provide predictable, stable funding for municipalities, regional districts and Modern Treaty Nations to accelerate local climate projects and build a better future for people in their communities.
The Local Government Climate Action Program was designed considering input from local governments, the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM), Modern Treaty Nations and the independent Climate Solutions Council.
“We’re working with local leaders to address the climate crisis and create new opportunities for people in the clean economy with more funding support,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “Local communities have been leaders in the fight against climate change, and this new program will accelerate their actions to cut pollution and build more resilient communities for everyone. We’ve listened to local leaders and designed a program that responds to their community priorities with funding they can count on each year.”
“As a project team of museum workers and Stó:lō community leaders, we share an interest in drawing awareness to historical realities that continue to shape our community today. “By working together with the Province, we’ve helped make sure local government priorities are reflected in the design of this new program.” To be eligible, participating governments are required to sign on to the B.C. 2022 Spring Freshet Update #2 Each spring the City of Abbotsford monitors the levels of the Fraser River during the annual snowmelt season (freshet) to assess the flooding risk along the Matsqui Dykes. BC’s River Forecast Centre published its latest snow survey last week, which states cool weather in April has increased the flood risk considerably, delaying snowmelt. Currently, snow levels remain above normal at 123 per cent, an increase from 108 per cent on April 1. Continued cool weather is increasing the risk of flooding if a prolonged heatwave occurs over the next few weeks. The City of Abbotsford will be
continuing to monitor river levels closely over the next several weeks as warmer weather arrives and address any potential flooding. In order to allow for accurate inspections of the dyke system, crews have completed work to cut back and remove grass and shrubs along the dyke system. Staff continues to perform regular inspections with the assistance of drones to inspect both the higher risk and difficult to access areas of the dyke system.

They will also continue to meet the enhanced infection controls that have been put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The older section of the VGH operating room suite is outdated and lacks proper space. The new 39-bed consolidated preand post-operative unit will support the new ORs by providing more space for patients, care teams and necessary equipment, and will improve the continuity of patient care.
The project cost is approximately $332.18 million and will be shared between the provincial government and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation.

Venus, the planet of peace, balance and harmony moves into your sign where it will remain until 29th May. For the moment it will help you to be more patient when it comes to waiting or dealing with hold ups. The right information may come your way, providing you with a new perspective on the decisions you can or should make.
Mercury, the planet of thought and communication has moved into your sign where it will remain until the 23rd May for the first time. It will return mid June to early July. For this reason don’t believe that decisions made now will be final. There will be something that changes in between time. Leave matters open for adjustment.
Getting away from it all and having some quiet time to yourself to think and consider, will do wonders. Taking a new direction with finances in some way might be a consideration you need to make. This doesn’t mean all activity will cease – the need to be involved with a group of people or friends remains. Balance it out more.
You need to contemplate things that need to be scaled down when it comes to your commitments, so that it brings a greater degree of balance to what you have to handle. It might take more than one go. Your priorities could go through quite a change encouraging you to focus on new goals in the long term. There is support.
You could either have more authority in a situation than you imagine or you could gain some recognition you didn’t expect. It might make you realise that you have more choices when it comes to the future than you believed. You may have been focussing too much on what others expect rather than where you want to head.
Someone else might start to become secretive. There might be an expectation that you take on more obligations. You should focus on being more freed up in the future rather than burdened. It is not all about them. This is why you need to be prepared to challenge anything you are not happy about. This can be done without argument.
You can find yourself busy with other people to late May. This can include a step up with social activity. If it is connected with work or business, some sort of change that will increase things could be the case. Expect it to develop in two stages though. The opportunity to get something much better organised is possible too.
Someone else could become demanding – there could also be some sort of underlying rebellion attached to it. You mustn’t allow this to unsettle normal routines you need to deal with. If you have to be firm with your words, so be it. You can try a gentler approach to begin with but if it doesn’t work, change tack.
An enjoyable conversation could start up with somebody else. You need to look at this as stage one. There will be more to the situation later. This could involve somebody you don’t know well or a person that you want to either make an agreement with or know their ideas more. Set out to streamline regular routines.
If you have been too busy of late to see to normal routines, especially at home, you have got the opportunity to remedy that this month. A large part might be working out areas that have been distracting you. Your desire to be able to enjoy yourself more can have a strong effect over taking things on without thinking them through.

planned. It might generate alternative ideas you have not previously considered. Making things more streamlined or simple could be part of it. This could lead to other decisions later on.
