BC Parks day-use pass program continues in three popular parks The free BC Parks day-use pass program will continue in three popular provincial parks this summer to maintain a balance between growing numbers of visitors and conserving the natural environment. Beginning June 17, 2022, people accessing Golden Ears Park, Joffre Lakes Park and three trailheads at Garibaldi Park during peak hours will need to obtain a free day-use pass. The passes will be available online at and can be reserved at 7 a.m., two days prior to the planned visit: https:// reserve.bcparks.ca/dayuse/ People will be able to cancel a pass if they don’t intend to use it. “Some of our most popular parks continue to experience more visitors than ever who are connecting with nature and enjoying the health benefits from outdoor recreation,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “Overuse has become a growing challenge in these three parks. First monkeypox case detected in B.C A case of monkeypox has been confirmed in B.C. through laboratory testing at the BC Centre for Disease Control and awaiting confirmation at the National Microbiology Laboratory. The individual resides in Vancouver. Vancouver Coastal Health is conducting public health follow-up. More than 700 cases of monkeypox infection have been found in non-endemic countries since May 2022, with the majority identified in Europe. Infections caused by a West African clade have also been diagnosed in Canada and the United States. This clade tends to cause mild disease. While most, but not all, recent global infections are among young men who identify as men who have sex with other men, the virus can affect anyone through close person-to-person contact. Monkeypox is spread from person to person through contact with sores and items like bedding or towels that have monkeypox virus on them. It can also spread through respiratory droplets such as coughs and sneezes during prolonged close, face-to-face contact with a person who has monkeypox.
While the virus is not known to transmit through semen, vaginal or rectal fluids, it does spread through close contact during sexual activity. There is a vaccine available in Canada that provides protection against the monkeypox virus. It can be used to manage spread of monkeypox and prevent serious illness in people who have been exposed. For every case, public health teams will assess if vaccination is appropriate for close contacts. Vaccine does not have benefit for those who are already infected. The risk of monkeypox to the general public is very low. There is no need for the general public to get vaccinated. People who have been exposed should monitor for symptoms. Symptoms of monkeypox can present from 5-21 days after exposure. If you develop symptoms, visit a health care professional. Wear a mask and cover the lesions, and inform the clinic ahead of time of the reason for your visit. Limit close contact, including sexual contact with others.

Cari Guri named the City’s 20222023 “Artist in Residence”. Following a two-month call for submissions, the City of Abbotsford, in partnership with the Abbotsford Arts Council is pleased to announce visual artist, Cari Guri, has been selected as the “Artist in Residence”, a paid summer residency through the Go Play Outside Artist in Residence program.
inspiration from interactions and conversations with local residents in the park she will create a series of painted and mixed media works focusing on this year’s theme of social inclusion. This collection will be displayed at the Abbotsford Art Council’s Kariton Art Gallery next Spring.
Guri is an emerging artist currently based in the Fraser Valley, whose current painting practice explores the relationship between identity construction and portraiture. Through her paintings, she looks at the dynamics of viewership as she uses the process of creating a work to observe, consider, decode and recode her encounters with herself and outside world, ultimately allowing her to question what it means to see and to be seen. Her work has been exhibited online and in galleries across Canada and in New York.
The Go Play Outside program will be at Mill Lake Park from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. every Thursday throughout the summer, beginning June 30th and will be hosting pop-up events at various neighbourhood parks on weekends. Along with the art demonstrations by Guri, the Go Play Outside team will be leading interactive recreational activities and handing out Culture Kits, hands-on art-making kits for kids ages 6 to 13, designed by The Reach Gallery Museum and inspired by their summer exhibitions.
As part of the Artist in Residence program, Guri will be on-site at various Go Play Outside pop-up events offering live art demonstrations in the City’s parks throughout the summer. Drawing

Start your small business side hustle (NC) With the rise of e-commerce and social media platforms, starting a business has never been easier. Whether you’re interested in pursuing your passion project, creating a new product, or filling a need, a side hustle can be very rewarding with the bonus of extra income. It can also be a smart way to test the waters if you’re thinking about making a career change. Here are a few tips to help you get started: Be realistic about your time The first step is to assess the time required; do the needs of the business match what you can balance in your life? Do a self-audit to figure out a reasonable weekly amount of hours you have available for your venture. Decide how much time you will devote to the side hustle, where it will fit in your schedule and how it will affect your other jobs. Remember, your time is money. Be sure to place a value on your time and track it carefully. This foresight will help you avoid overscheduling and burnout. Track your income and expenses Side hustles can be extremely helpful for meeting your financial and life goals, but it’s important to stay on top of all your expenses, income and balance sheets. Tracking your income and expenses can also help you predict the future of your side hustle
PAGE 12
and ultimately guide your decisions in becoming a full-time entrepreneur; just don’t forget to include your time as an expense. Never stop networking For any stage of a personal venture, networking is key. Your network can be a great resource for landing new investors, finding future employees, meeting mentors, and reaching new customers. Obvious tools such as social media and events are great ways to network, but it can start closer to home too. Keeping consistent communication with your customers even after their purchase, touching base with suppliers in between orders and asking for feedback from other professionals are great ways to network on a budget. Make the most of free resources You can’t put a value on research, information and insights. Give your venture a leg up with up-to-date resources like newly released census data. This location-specific data offer information on average income and population makeup – valuable market research for any business. Understanding your customer’s needs, behaviors and preferences are essential for side hustle longevity. Find more information about the newly released census data at statcan.gc.ca/census

What jobs are too hazardous for young workers? British Columbians are invited to provide feedback on what types of work are too hazardous to be done by youth under age 16, and in some cases, under 19. The Province has launched a consultation site where stakeholders and the public can review and comment on a proposed framework that outlines the types of jobs that could be defined as hazardous and unsuitable for young workers. The consultation can be accessed through government’s engagement site at: https://engage.gov.bc.ca/ govtogetherbc In developing the proposed framework, ministry staff examined WorkSafeBC injury data and other jurisdictions’ labour laws relating to hazardous employment. Based on that information, a number of industries have been identified, and are being considered for B.C.’s hazardous work regulation for young people. These include areas within: construction, forestry, food processing, oil/gas
and power, asbestos abatement and others. This is the next phase of the work the Ministry of Labour has undertaken to protect the health and safety of working children and youth, and to bring B.C. in line with international child employment standards and other Canadian jurisdictions. Last year, new rules came into effect that raised the general minimum working age from 12 to 16, and identified what jobs are considered ”light work” suitable for youth aged 14 to 15, with parental permission. The new rules do not prevent children from babysitting or delivering newspapers part-time, or students from working in a work-study or work experience class which are among the jobs excluded from these rules.

for the Indigenous Spirit Fund. This year, the golf tournament will be back again, and there will be more information in the coming months. “It has been an honour to work with Sharifa, the Balmoral team and the Asian community over the years, and I can tell you from first-hand experience, your donations have an incredible direct and positive impact on our Indigenous children and youth in our city,” said Kenn Richard, Executive Director, Native Child and Family Services of Toronto. “We are grateful for our longstanding relationship with this community.” The Indigenous Spirit Fund offers several programs to Indigenous People, including: On the Land – Culture Camps for Indigenous children and youth, designed to give this next generation a stronger cultural identify and sense of belonging. It offers Culture Programs to help maintain and strengthen Indigenous languages and cultures, engaging with Elders and Knowledge Carriers. It helps those who may have grown up feeling disconnected from or unaware of their rich Indigenous cultural backgrounds to re-connect and access their culture, and strengthen their identities. Another program in the fund for Indigenous children and youth in Toronto, is called: Honouring The Indigenous Spirit Awards. Individual applicants can receive funding to support their “Indigenous Spirit” and their contribution to community. This initiative aims to change the way success is measured, celebrating the everyday victories that Indigenous children achieve, when they are already so systemically disadvantaged. If you or your organization would like to put efforts on this fund, donations can be made via Canada Helps at: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/native-child-and-family-servicesof-toronto/campaign/indigenousspirit-fund-isf/. Ministers’ statement on 619 lives lost during 2021 heat dome Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, have released the following statement regarding the BC Coroners Service’s Review of Heat-Related Deaths in B.C. in Summer 2021 report: “We are saddened by the confirmation that 619 people lost their lives due to heat during the unprecedented heat dome in summer 2021. Our hearts go out to the families and friends who continue to grieve the loss of a loved one. “After last year’s tragic heat dome, and the increasing impacts of climate change, it was clear we needed to work together to be prepared for heat events, particularly extreme heat emergencies, and we thank the Heat-Related Death Review Panel for its recommendations on how the provincial government can do that. “Many of the recommendations within the panel’s report that are addressed to the Province are complete

The Province has implemented a provincial co-ordinated heat alert and response system, the BC Heat Alert and Response System, which alerts people, First Nations governments and local governments of heat warnings and extreme heat emergencies, and lays out actions to be taken by provincial government agencies to keep people safe. The system is ready to be used this summer and includes the potential to issue broadcast-intrusive alerts through Alert Ready to notify people about extreme heat emergencies.

Good Times at the West Zone Mini Track Meet For the first time in nearly three years, local elementary schools got together for a much anticipated Track and Field Meet at Abbotsford’s Rotary Stadium. On June 17th, grade 4-5 students from Blue Jay, Dave Kandal, Harry Sayers and King Traditional competed in ball throw, frisbee throw, long jump, hurdles, sprints, long distance, and relays. “I was really nervous before my race. When I finished, I was so proud of myself because I won a 1st place ribbon,” stated a King Traditional Elementary School athlete.

“It is wonderful seeing all these children running and competing! We have all waited a long time for this,” said Mrs. Dhaliwal. The weather cooperated and the meet finished on time. It was very nice to see all the teachers and coaches working together to put on such a fun event. Congratulations to all of the students that participated! See you next year!

Minister Kahlon; European trade mission concludes, significant agreements signed Ministry of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, and B.C. delegates concluded a trade mission to Europe, highlighted by signing two agreements with European countries to create opportunities and jobs for British Columbians. “It was a privilege to represent B.C. and showcase the work being done to build a stronger B.C. for everyone,” Kahlon said. “I’m excited about the strengthened friendships and new partnerships. I look forward to building off of these significant agreements and discussions to bring in sustainable investments, opportunities and good-paying jobs for B.C. businesses and workers.”
Vancouver Police to Allow Kippahs for Officers Following B’nai Brith Recommendation After a recommendation from B’nai Brith Canada, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) has decided to modify its policies to specifically allow Jewish officers to wear a traditional headcovering for Jews. Responding to B’nai Brith, Drazen Manojlovic, the VPD’s Director Planning, Research and Audit Section, said the force will modify its equity, diversity, and inclusion policies to incorporate kippahs.
business leaders who are interested in B.C.’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) values. Highlights of industries discussed on the trip included madein-B.C. products and services, such as agritech, mass timber and forestry, shipbuilding, biomanufacturing and hydrogenenergy production. “ N o w, m o r e than ever, we must expand our reach with key partners to diversify trade relationships and create stronger, more resilient supply chains to better protect and support British Columbians,” Kahlon said. “This mission was an important step to showcase the StrongerBC Economic Plan and position B.C. as a front-runner in renewable resources and clean-energy solutions to drive investment and support good, sustainable jobs for people in B.C.”
The 10-day trip included the signing of two agreements. The first was signed with the Netherlands on May 24, 2022, and centred around co-operation and resource sharing in agritech to support food security in B.C. and better position the province to trade and supply food globally. The second agreement was signed with Finland on May 31, 2022, and focused on both regions working together to further develop the mass The tour began in the Netherlands timber sector and forest bioeconomy. on May 22, continued to the United The tour featured one-on-one meet- Kingdom on May 25, Ireland on May ings, business roundtables and facil- 27, Germany on May 30 and finished ity tours with government officials, in Finland on June 1. academic experts, and industry and PAGE 26

“We do not have policy that specifically permits the Jewish Kippah and your enquiry helps identify this is as a gap in our policy,” Manojlovic said. “To my knowledge, a Jewish member has not brought this to our attention but we are aware of it now. Coincidentally, we are doing a review of our policies (on) Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and we will make the inclusion of the Kippah in our policy.”
“The VPD has been a leader in Canada in promoting a diverse work force,” said Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of B’nai Brith Canada. “Its uniform regulations allow candidates who wear the Sikh turban and the Muslim hijab to be hired as police officers. However, B’nai Brith’s inquiry revealed that there was a gap in the VPD’s policy with no specific mention that wearing a kippah was allowed. This is commendable recognition on the VPD’s part.”
“No one should have to choose between a career in policing and following the precepts of their faith,” added Marvin Rotrand, B’nai Brith’s National Director of its League for Human Rights. “Observant Jews serve with distinction in many police departments in the United States. We appreciate the VPD’s rapid response in correcting this gap in its policy. It sends positive signals to B’nai Brith Canada is delighted with potential Jewish candidates that they the development. are welcome.”

Mars, your ruling planet will join beneficial Jupiter in your sign this week where it will remain until 5th July. This marks the beginning of a new 2 year personal cycle and this combination could certainly provide very beneficial opportunities, though you might have to watch being overly optimistic and taking on too much at once.
You have got the opportunity to rethink personal matters that may have first required your attention mid to late April. What needs to be let go could become very obvious now, so go that way. This won’t necessarily completely establish new directions you can follow – that will begin to take shape in early July, so prepare.
Greater clarity about what is important personally can emerge but you should be cautious of acting too quickly. There are things you need to carefully consider to mid June. Right now you have the chance to bring an end obligations expected that you feel do not suit your purposes. Handled slowly will result in success for you.
A lot more can be expected of you up to early July, particularly from any person who has authority. This does not mean you should not question this. What you have to guard against in the next couple of weeks is being too generous in regard to what you take on. Watch out for someone wanting to make things easier for themself.
You can become more fired up from now to early July about any long-term goals you have recently considered. This could involve letting go of obligations that somebody else has expected. Streamlining what you need to manage on a daily basis could be necessary as well as a big help in enabling you to reach your goals.
Commitments you had to deal with so far in May can now make you aware of how somebody else will put themself first. There may not be a lot you can do about this up to early July but you should certainly not allow it to increase and work on ways to eliminate it altogether. Stay focussed on your own future directions to mid June.
Things will get very active and busy when it comes to other people, particularly up to early July. It might be wise to consider bringing an end to any situation that puts too many demands on you for the benefit of others. You may have considered this from mid to late April but now the time has come to do something. Free yourself up.
You can find yourself with a lot more work to handle one way or another. The need to get better organised is now here. A good routine needs to be put into place from now to early July. If you have overindulged of late, paying better attention to your health and perhaps getting some exercise can pay off as well. Not a time to be lazy.
The more effort you have put into getting a good foundation in place since mid April, the greater will be your opportunity to enjoy yourself up to early July. This would be an excellent period to have a break. If you have been spending too much, now is the time to put better routines in place to get it under control. Be persistent.
Matters connected to home and family may require greater attention to early July. You might need to get a better routine in place. You will more than likely enjoy it and not find it difficult at all. That might be a different matter for family that don’t want to change or take on any new routines you see as necessary. Don’t be put off.
11 The ability to leave behind the need to spend, You need to carefully watch your spending kuMB- pyt Krfb, Dn lfB pr ivsyLsL Krcf hovy, jLmIn-jfiedfd lfAux dy Xog, sMqfn dy whether by choice or by circumstance, could from now until early July, as it will be easy nvIN Xojnf vfsqy ivsLysL Krcf hovy. meI 20, 21, 22, 30, 31, qy jUn 8, 9, 10 asLuB. be a blessing. finalising something that required attention from mid to late April. Be cautious about making quick promises to early July. They might turn into something much bigger than expected.
be the case, even if more money happens to come your way. You could begin to see your priorities from a different perspective. This could be associated with more practical information coming your way now.
