work, ministry staff examined Work SafeBC injury data and other juris dictions’ labour laws relating to haz ardous employment. Based on that information, a number of industries have been identified, and are being considered for B.C.’s hazardous work regulation for young people. These include areas within: construction, forestry, food processing, oil/gas and power, asbestos abatement and others. This is the next phase of the work the Ministry of Labour has undertaken to protect the health and safety of work ing children and youth, and to bring B.C. in line with international child employment standards and other Canadian jurisdictions.

What jobs are too hazardous for young workers?

British Columbians are invited to provide feedback on what types of work are too hazardous to be done by youth under age 16, and in some cases, under 19. The Province has launched a consul tation site where stakeholders and the public can review and comment on a proposed framework that outlines the types of jobs that could be defined as hazardous and unsuitable for young workers. The consultation can be ac cessed through government’s engage ment site at: Ingovtogetherbchttps://engage.gov.bc.ca/developingtheproposedframe

The engagement materials are being translated into traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Punjabi and French, and will be available soon.

Last year, new rules came into ef fect that raised the general minimum working age from 12 to 16, and identified what jobs are considered ”light work” suitable for youth aged 14 to 15, with parental permission. The new rules do not prevent children from babysitting or delivering news papers part-time, or students from working in a work-study or work experience class which are among the jobs excluded from these rules.

While there have been previous at tempts to coordinate management through the Hatzic Lake Manage ment Plan developed in 2020, fur ther work is needed to ensure the protection of people, habitat, cultural values, farmland, and property in the greater Hatzic Watershed area. The plan also recommended that the Provincial government take a leading role in the overall implementation.

Provincial Oversight Requested for Hatzic Watershed Management

Last year’s atmospheric rivers trig gered flooding in Hatzic that resulted in the evacuation of local residents and major transportation disruptions throughout Mission, areas of the Fraser Valley Regional District, and Leq’á:mel First Nation. With extreme rainfall followed by summer drought expected more frequently in the future, the partners have been in regular discussion on how best to manage the issues and have reached an greement that Pro vincial oversight is needed to provide the necessary policy, funding, and long-term strategy.

In a letter co-written by Leq’á:mel First Nation, City of Mission, Fra ser Valley Regional District Area F and Area G, and the Dewdney Area Improvement District, the group outlined a proposed meeting agenda that would see topics like funding, coordinated diking and drainage plans, roles, timing, and traditional stewardship authority discussed with the overall goal of establishing a col laborative and resilient path forward.

The UVGI robots emit short pulses of UV light, damaging the DNA and RNA of harmful pathogens, including severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), Clos tridioides difficile (C. difficile), carbapenemase-producing organ isms (CPO), Candida auris (C. auris), and methicillin-resistant Staphylo coccus aureus (MRSA). The robots light up as they disinfect, removing viruses and bacteria from a patient room in as little as 20 minutes.

The stars of the disinfection process remain Fraser Health’s Xenex Light Strike Germ-Zapping robots, pur chased in 2020 and funded through local hospital foundations. The entire UVGI fleet has logged thousands of hours and disinfected nearly 62,000 rooms in the past 21 months.

Fraser Health’s 16 Ultraviolet Germi cidal Irradiation (UVGI) robots now have UVGI ‘helpers’.

Fraser Health’s germ-fighting robots and helpers log thousands of hours during the COVID-19 pandemic

“Embracing new solutions is pivotal to providing our patients with the best care possible,” says Dr. Victoria Lee, president and CEO, Fraser Health. “UVGI disinfection and our new disinfection pods are part of a multipronged approach to reduce hospital-ac quired infections.”

The robots keep an internal timesheet of where and when they work, and the data is sent to a server so Fra ser Health can monitor usage. If they need some “downtime,” a backup robot is brought in. Each robot is controlled by an envi ronmental services (EVS) operator, working with Fraser Health Infection Prevention and Control, housekeep ing staff and health care aides using traditional and chemical cleaning methods. Housekeeping workers are returning to the public system as Fra ser Health employees as part of the repatriation of workers under Bill 47.

“We must remain vigilant to keep all viruses and bac teria out of our acute and community facilities,” says Ruth Dueckman, ex ecutive director, Infection Prevention and Control, Fraser Health. “UVGI robots and pods are one of the inno vative tools to help keep our patients and staff safe. We have seen a reduc tion in some hospital-acquired infec tions such as C. difficile and MRSA since we first introduced UVGI disinfection into our region in 2016.

Two new UVGI disinfection pods have joined the team. The pods and robots are deployed at hospitals across the Fraser Health region to kill viruses and bacteria that linger on surfaces and can potentially cause infection. The pods reflect and trap UV rays and are easily moveable and collapsible so disinfection can occur in small areas without the need to close entire rooms. Mobile pieces of equipment such as wheelchairs, incubators and IV poles are placed in the tent-like pods so the robots can do their work.

“We put every one of our CPO ve hicles through a rigorous 166-point certification process to ensure CPO drivers enjoy all the quality, reliabili ty, performance and safety that comes with owning one of our cars,” says Bart Herring, vice president of sales, Mercedes-Benz Canada. “However, not all manufacturers’ CPO programs are the same. I encourage car shop pers to do their research, ask ques tions and read the fine print.”

(NC) Anyone who has been trying to purchase a new vehicle this year knows it’s been a challenge. Snarled supply chains and factory closures have contributed to a global short age of semiconductor chips, which has delayed vehicle production and created a shortage of new vehicles. While microchip production has ramped back up, it will take time to clear the backlog. For those who want their car right away, buying a pre-owned vehicle is a practical op tion instead of waiting for a new one. Certified Pre-Owned, known as CPO, programs are designed to minimize the risk involved in buying a used vehicle. CPO vehicles are gently used, come reconditioned and are backed by a manufacturer warranty; they are required to meet a certain age and mileage limit, which varies by automaker. They also need to pass a multipoint inspection of the vehicle structure, appearance and a review of interior components and functional ity. The test typically involves a technician getting behind the wheel to evaluate its steering, brakes, sus pension, drive shaft and overall ride quality. Some CPO vehicle programs also offer additional customer ben efits like roadside assistance, finance and leasing options, warranty cover age and more.

Why is it so hard to get a new car these days?

The building will be constructed using natural products, including stone and wood, consistent with the Province’s CleanBC plan.

The society offers healing, educa tion and employment programs for people in B.C. who identify as a part of the women’s community, including people who identify as transgender, cisgender, non-binary and TwoSpirit, and who have been affected by trauma, violence or abuse at any time during their life. The programs offered are trauma-informed and aim to meet each person where they are without judgement or expectation.

The new building will have 368 student beds in one-, two-, and fourbed units, as well as academic space, including new classrooms, student collaboration space, labs and offices, and food services.

“Bridges for Women Society is im mensely grateful for the funding from the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions,” said Patricia Raw son, executive director, Bridges for Women Society. “The additional services we can now provide change women’s lives. Clients often tell us how the counselling support around their mental health is a key factor in their Enhancinghealing.”mental-health supports is an integral part of A Pathway to Hope, B.C.͛s roadmap for building a comprehensive system of mentalhealth and addictions care for British Columbians.

Investing in student housing and academic space makes post-secondary education more accessible and affordable for British Columbians, and reduces the pressure on the rental market in surrounding communities.

The Province is investing $100,000 for the Bridges for Women Society (Bridges) to continue providing women and families throughout B.C. with trauma counselling, recovery and referral supports.

With classes moving to the new academic building, space will become available for other purposes, including a potential expansion of the college’s child care facility.

“We know the impact of recent crises, such as the pandemic and climate change, have increased peoples’ risk of being harmed, and this funding will support Bridges’ work to offer essential, trauma-informed counsel ling services.”

The $292.5-million project received $202.3 million in provincial funding, while Douglas College provided $90.2 million. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2023, with anticipated completion in summer “Students2026.need a place to call home that is affordable and allows them time and space to study,” said Jennifer Whiteside, MLA for New Westminster. “We recognize how important access to housing is for young people and how integral it is to their post-secondary experience. I’m proud that our government is working to make such a positive difference that will directly benefit the lives of future students and their families.”

The funding builds on $50,000 that government provided Bridges in 2021 to support trauma-informed counselling services for people who New housing will support Douglas College students, relieve pressure on rental market Douglas College students will be able to live where they learn for the first time in new student housing at the New Westminster campus.

“The work of Bridges in supporting women and non-binary people who have been affected by violence has helped so many people reclaim their lives,” said Grace Lore, Parliamen tary Secretary for Gender Equity.

Funding for the new student housing is part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan. Future Ready is making education and training more accessible, affordable and relevant to help businesses grow and to prepare British Columbians for the jobs of tomorrow.

“Bridges for Women Society gives compassionate, life-changing support to women, Two-Spirit and non-binary people affected by violence,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Men tal Health and Addictions. “With this funding, Bridges will help even more people restore hope and find healing.”

More women affected by trauma will be able to access extended mental-health supports.

Douglas College’s first on-campus housing will be a new 20-storey building with 368 student beds, academic space and parking. This will be the largest provincial capital investment into a post-secondary institution that will benefit both students and local renters.

“Students at Douglas College have told us everything we need to hear. They need access to affordable housing so they don’t have the barrier of long commutes and expensive rent,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “I’m incredibly excited by this project and historical investment by our government. We’re going to change lives, both at Douglas College and in New Westminster. In 16 years, the old government only built 130 student beds. Our government understands how important housing is for students, and we’re building 8,000 new student beds by 2028. Including Douglas College, we are now more than 85% of the way to reaching that goal.”

Shell Recharge Solutions is part of The Shell Group, whose target it is to become a net-zero emissions energy business by the year 2050, operate more than 500,000 charge points globally by 2025 and scale to 2,500,000 by 2030. For more in formation, visit shellrecharge.com/

The Indigo Group is the world leader in parking, personal mobility and related services on nearly 6,000 park ing facilities, with 14,500 employees throughout 11 countries serving in 750 cities. Indigo Canada operates over 1,000 parking facilities and is supported by a team of nearly 2,300 professionals from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coasts. Operating in a variety of parking and mobility sectors, In digo works with local authorities as well as private entities managing a wide range of properties and serving multiple market segments.

As an owner and operator of parking facilities, our goal is to make EV charging more accessible, as we are focused on actively contributing to their deployment all over Canada. That’s why Indigo is proud to be part of this pilot project.” This is part of Uber Canada’s ongo ing work to become a zero-emission platform in major cities in Canada by 2030. Just last month, Uber ex panded its partnership with Hertz to Canada so rideshare drivers who use the Uber platform can now sign up to rent Teslas on a weekly basis from Hertz in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Earlier this year, Uber Canada announced partnerships with Wallbox and FLO to offer discounts on home-charging solutions. Uber Canada also announced a partnership with Plug’n Drive to provide drivers the opportunity to learn about the total cost of owning an EV and the benefits of making the switch from gas to electric. General Motors is giving discounts to rideshare drivers on the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Drivers of fully electric vehicles are eligible for Uber’s Zero Emissions incentive, which lets them earn an extra $1 on every trip with Uber up to $4,000 until December 31, 2022. And last fall, we also announced Uber+Transit as a pilot in the Greater Toronto Area. By looking at transit schedules and UberX availability, Uber will suggest a combined route that’s both conve nient and affordable. About Shell Recharge Solutions

The first of three new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in British Co lumbia has opened in locations with high rideshare utilization, thanks to a collaboration between Uber and Shell Recharge Solutions.

As a pilot project for the first six months, the charging stations will be available exclusively to drivers on the Uber platform at a discount to en courage adoption and provide a more convenient solution than at-home charging. The longer-term goal of this pilot project is to apply learnings in the creation of similar programs to increase EV adoption in other cities where ridesharing operates in North TheAmerica.Greater Vancouver Region has the highest percentage of lowemission vehicles on Uber across all Canadian markets, but access to onthe-road charging options remains a key barrier. The first new EV charging station is located at: Metropolis at Metrotown Mall – 4750 Kingsway, Burnaby, Lot 218 – avail able today Two more charging stations are ex pected to be available later this year, and the locations will be announced in the coming months. This pilot project will have a total of six charging ports. Each site will feature 120kW fast-charging stations that are faster than most on-the-road chargers and has charge ports for two EVs.

“Reducing emissions from our trans port sector is a critical part of our efforts to fight climate change,” said The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources of Canada. “I want to applaud Uber and Shell Recharge Solutions for invest ing in EV infrastructure, helping to make it easier than ever for Canadi ans to make the switch to an electric vehicle with confidence.” Shell Recharge Solutions brought extensive experience providing turn key solutions scaled to the specific electrification requirements of light, medium and heavy-duty fleets. Sup port included site acquisition, system design and installation, and site op eration tools.

Shell Recharge Solutions is an in dustry leader in EV charging tech nology and services with a global footprint that spans North America, Europe, and Asia. Shell Recharge Solutions offers always-on technol ogy products and services including site planning and consultation, an EV charging software platform, on-site software and hardware installation, energy management, and turnkey maintenance support post-install for business and residential customers.

“As the largest mobility platform in the world, we know the impact we have goes beyond technology. We have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint, and we have an ambitious goal of becoming a zeroemissions platform by 2040 glob ally,” said Michael van Hemmen, Uber’s General Manager for Canada Mobility. “Vancouver far outperforms other cities in North America in terms of EV drivers on Uber, but we know how difficult finding an on-the-road charging station can be. This project is going to have a big impact for exist ing EV drivers as well as encouraging drivers to make the switch.”
