The UTA is extending one last plea for Minister Alghabra to take control of this file before labour action with the potential to cause billions of dol lars in negative impact occurs.
The UTA is demanding equality by being held to the AirCare ON-ROAD Program that currently applies to all commercial trucks operating in BC.
“This is the second implementation delay announced within the past year, which signals PV’s ongoing lack of interest in meaningful dialog with UTA members,” says Singh. “Instead of providing time for compliance as is being claimed, the newer and more punitive standard of truck age is forcing IOs into further cost and marketplace difficulty.” More specifically, the RTAP start date will require replacement trucks to be 2016 or newer. This is as opposed to the 2014 standard which would have been acceptable with a 2022 program
The UTA continues to appeal inter vention by Transport Canada via a binding sectoral steering committee premised on fairness, market viability and supply chain sanctity.
“Passive leadership that does not prioritize long-term supply chain stability must be considered gross negligence on behalf of Canada’s economy,” adds Singh. “Without a change of course, long-term labour instability will be the inevitable fu ture for the PV.”

United Truckers Association Demands Permanent Solution for Rolling Truck Age Program Port of Vancouver’s “Final” delay unacceptable; direct Government of Canada intervention necessary The United Truckers Association (“UTA”) is treating the recent Port of Vancouver (“PV”) Rolling Truck Age Program (“RTAP”) deferral as an inflammatory announcement that has the potential to permanently de stabilize the Metro Vancouver dray age Insteadsector.ofmeaningful con sultation with Indepen dent Operators (“IOs”) unfairly targeted by the implementation, the Port of Vancouver, under the guidance of Transport Can ada, announced a revised April, 2023 start date for the RTAP. While the UTA is happy with the inter vention of Minister Omar Alghabra and Members of Parliament Randeep Sarai and Taleeb Noormohamed, there are a number of in flammatory factors with the potential to act as a powder keg, according to UTA spokesperson Gagan Singh.
Theimplementation.Port’srationale flies in the face of current rules and regulations across British Columbia, where the other 98% of BC’s commercially-licensed trucks face no equivalent measures.

More people from under-represented groups can join B.C.’s growing tech nology sector through the Province’s Innovator Skills Initiative. “We know employers across Canada are finding it challenging to find staff amid this tight labour market,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “The Innovator Skills Initiative is an important tool to help our province be future ready and tackle our labour shortage, while creating a more in clusive economy that creates oppor tunities for lion to the Innovator Skills Initiative in fall 2021 to help people from under-represented groups get their start in the technology sector in 2022 and 2023. As a result of the program’s success, the Province is allocating a further $583,000 this summer to allow waitlisted businesses to ac cess the Innovator Skills Initiative “Programsprogram. like the Innovator Skills Initiative are an essential part of B.C.’s innovation economy,” said Brenda Bailey, Parliamentary Sec
$15providedProvinceThesector.”thegroupsresentedder-repunintechmil
The plan sets two main goals for the province – inclusive growth and clean growth – and puts forward six mis sions to keep B.C. on track.
The StrongerBC Economic Plan moves British Columbia forward by tackling the challenges of today while growing an economy that works for everyone. The long-term plan builds on B.C.’s strong economic recovery and works to address two longstanding challenges – inequality and climate change – by closing the skills gap, building resilient communities and helping businesses and people transition to clean-energy solutions.
The Province’s Innovator Skills Ini tiative funding from fall 2021 was supplemented by partners Mitacs and the Information and Communica tions Technology Council for a total investment of $29 million over 2022 and 2023. The program provides employers with grants for as much as $10,000 per job placement, as well as resourc es to support companies in recruiting, retaining and developing employees who self-identify as being from an under-represented group. “It’s absolutely essential that we encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion in B.C.’s tech sector. In novate BC is very proud to deliver the Innovator Skills Initiative,” said Raghwa Gopal, president and CEO, Innovate BC. “We’re facing a skills shortage in British Columbia and supporting the skills development of under-represented professionals is a crucial step in bridging the talent Sincegap.” it was created, nearly 3,800 people have been able to get their first technology or tech-enabled jobs through the program – an important step in filling more than one million job openings expected in B.C. over the next 10 years.

30 YEARS OF GURMAT EDUCATION
This year marks an exciting milestone as volunteers, staff, children, families, and community members celebrate Gurmat Center’s 30th anniversary. Gurmat Center saw its humble be ginnings in 1993 when classes first started on a farm on Clearbrook Rd. The original Gurmat Center class consisted of 40 students that curiously entered a renovated portable trailer which was previously used to house farm workers. Little did they know that they would be the pioneering class of a grass-roots Sikh school that would go on to educated thousands of Sikh children in Abbotsford over the next 3 Graduallydecades.increasing in popular ity through word of mouth, Gurmat Center reached a total of 300 students in the year 1999, prompting its tem porary move to the Old Clearbook Junior High School. In 2001, Gurmat Center purchased property on Town shipline Road which was the site of the former Glenmore Elementary School. Here, an old church was con verted into a Gurdwara which set into motion the first ever English Katha Program for Youth. In 2003, Gurmat Center Preschool was founded, the first Sikh preschool in Abbotsford. In 2010, making way for a new level of convenience and safety, Gurmat Center carried on the tradition of Sunday Youth and Family Darbar at Kalgidhar Gurdwara and decided to move all classes to that location in the following year. The initial objective of Gurmat Center was to teach the reading and writing of the Punjabi language. Maintaining this legacy set into mo tion 30 years ago, everything that Gurmat Center does revolves around the beautiful philosophy of the Sikh faith. Gurmat Center continues to educate Sikh youth in the language of their Gurus, the Gurmukhi script (Punjabi alphabet) and allows youth to explore their Sikh identity in a safe and supportive environment. Gurmat Center incorporates a variety of moti vating activities and a curriculum that has been designed by experienced and certified educators. Teachers are proficient in knowing how to reach the hearts and minds of our future generation. Gurmat Center strives to achieve its goals through listening to valuable input from students, parents, teachers, and members of the wider community. Accordingly, there are many classes and programs at Gur mat Center that are scrupulously run, including Punjabi Classes, Gurbani Santhia, Sikh Studies, Kirtan, Gatka, Sunday Youth & Family Darbar, Seva Club, Gurmat Camps, Annual Shaheedi Smagam, Annual Award Ceremony, and Dharm Parchar Store. We’re looking forward to another great year of learning as we come together to take care of our most precious resource, our children. With God’s Grace, Gurmat Center will continue to educate children and youth so that they develop a strong sense of identity that is rooted in their language and faith. The opportunity to educate a child is a great privilege that should be honoured with interac tions filled with love, compassion, care, respect, and dignity. The Gur mat Center community of children and families, both old and new, have much to be proud and so much to be thankful for, as we look ahead to what the next 10 years will bring. Gurmat Center’s core mission is summed up best by its popular slogan: “Taking care of our children’s future…today!”

“Developing, attracting and retain ing the talent B.C. needs to grow and innovate across our economy is an important part of our StrongerBC Economic Plan,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “With our province expecting more than one million job openings over the next decade, these internships will play a vital role in giving students the real-world experience needed for well-paying, long-term careers that will continue to bring world-class innovation to B.C.”
Earl Storey has put his name forward for a spot on the Abbotsford School District’s board of education in the upcoming local government election.
Also, out of all the candidates, he received the highest number of in dividual donors to his campaign, which is a testament to the faith the community has in him. He’s running under a “Parent’s Choice” banner because he believes parents need to have their voices heard once again in the classrooms. He believes the decision makingreins need to be handed back to the parents.

Storey’s goal is to help make their voices heard and support their free dom to choose what’s best for their Storey is a strong supporter of paren tal participation at all levels of educa tion. He believes parents remain the strongest influence as primary educa tors and advocates for their children.
As a father of 8, and grandfather of several students in the Abbotsford school district, Storey’s heart is for the children. He is a family man through-and-through and believes it’s time for change in the school system. Storey has nearly 40 years of busi ness experience in Abbotsford. He’s currently an account manager at B.A. Robinson and has served as an associ ate member and past board member of the Fraser Valley chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association Community(FVMCA).

Students performing cutting-edge research, get internship support
The $8.6-million one-time provincial investment is for the Mitacs Acceler ate and Elevate programs that connect student researchers with innovative companies to provide students with real-world experience in applying their research. The students who receive these grants work in sectors and on projects that support priority areas such as clean technology, life sciences, emergency management and advanced timber.
involvement has been a large part of Storey’s life since he and his wife moved here 38 years ago.
“I know that students can be more successful when they have real-world opportunities to apply their learning. These opportunities are also vital to building and strengthening B.C.’s economy,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “By continuing to work with industry through organizations like Mitacs, with the thousands of internships they facilitate, we’re helping students get a leg up in the innovation and technology commu nity. In turn, student researchers are helping us find the best, newest in novations like transforming coal into clean-energy storage and finding the most sustainable way to keep patients warm in hospitals after surgeries, pre venting hypothermia and improving recovery times.”
Student researchers are seeking the newest innovations to make life better for British Columbians in fields such as clean technology and emergency Governmentmanagement. encourages these ef forts by supporting more than 1,700 research internships to help students prepare for and thrive in the highdemand jobs of tomorrow.
The funding will help students create innovative, research-based solutions to challenges faced by not-for-profit organizations, B.C. businesses, and communities throughout British Co lumbia. The paid internships are ad ministered through Mitacs, a national not-for-profit organization that builds partnerships between undergraduate and graduate student researchers, post-secondary institutions, industry, not-for-profit organizations and com Onmunities.Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, Kang met with Atlas Power Technologies CEO Mitchell Miller and the two stu dents who are working at Atlas Power Technologies’ supercapacitor lab and the first Canadian supercapaci tor manufacturing facility, located in PastAbbotsford.internships include: a post-doctoral fellow at University of Northern British Columbia who worked with BC Biocarbon to re search a carbon-neutral replacement for coal in high-temperature combus tion uses; a PhD student from Simon Fraser University who researched the char acterization of stabilized lithium ion batteries for Nano One Materials Corporation that developed a scalable process for producing low-cost, highperformance cathode powders used in lithium ion batteries; and a University of Victoria student who researched the impacts of small ves sels on cetaceans, such as whales, dolphins and porpoises, in the Salish Sea with the Wild 4 Whales Founda Fundingtion.
for the research intern ships is part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready Plan. Future Ready is making education and training more acces sible, affordable and relevant to help businesses grow and prepare British Columbians for the jobs of tomorrow.
Storey currently volunteers at his local church, where he runs a weekly prayer meeting. He’s also involved in supporting the West Coast Water Protectors of the BC Metis Federation (BCMF). Additionally, he’s a board member of Abbotsford Elec toral District Associations (EDA) for the Conservative Party of Canada. He was voted in back in 2021. He has spoken with many parents who have real con cerns that they’re being left out of what’s happening in their child’s classroom. Many believe there’s not enough transparency between the school system and the parents and feel like their voices aren’t being heard.

This isn’t Storey’s first time around. In 2018, he took his initial run as school trustee candidate. While he didn’t win a spot on the board 4 years ago, he believes it was a successful run. Storey finished 10th in the voting out of 17 candidates (top seven in vot ing win). His name was checked off on 25.6% of ballots cast (8,514 votes from the 33,182 ballots).
You will need to be mindful of your spending up to March – you are not in a position to see these matters clearly. This could be because unexpected expense could arise and if you have been frivolous beforehand, it could worry you. Getting something new, organising a holiday or taking up a new interest will appeal to you right now.
If you haven’t seen a lot of your friends for a while – that could begin to change from now with a lot more contact through to March. Anything that might involve you with a group of people will become busier, as well as perhaps changeable. It would be wise to make balanced decisions now on the obligations you can manage.

Life will be super busy when it comes to interaction with others up to March. This could bring people from the past back into your life later in the year or bring up a situation again that you thought was settled. From mid January, you can be more certain of the way things will be. Other people can easily distract you as well. Whatever you need to manage on a daily basis can become hectic and full of distractions to March. You will need to keep your wits about you when it comes to maintaining routines. This will be an excellent time to get into more exercise, if you have been contemplating it for a while. It will be up and down but you will persist.
Doing the things that you enjoy needs to be the main theme from now to March. More social activity can have ways of presenting themselves. Life has had a serious tone since late 2020 and this can be the beginning of moving on from that. If there is a hobby or interest you have considered, this would be the time to take it up. Home and/or family will become the focus to March. If there is anything you have wanted to get done at home, there should be plenty of opportunity to do so. You need to expect stops and starts though. Conflict might arise in the family. This will not be sorted quickly, so be patient to go through the ups and downs that will occur. Life will become very busy from now to March. It would be wise to pace yourself when it comes to any situation, but particularly work, that you enthusiastically take on between now and late October. Your energy level won’t be as robust from then until Christmas, as it might be at the moment. Other people can be changeable.
The New Moon this week occurs in your sign, providing you with the opportunity to take a new look at what you want and where you stand in life. Be very careful of impulsively taking on new responsibilities as these could cause chaos up to March with anything that has been well ordered, bringing many distractions into your life.

Mercury, the planet of thought and communication moves into your sign where it will remain for the first time until 23rd September. There will be the need to rethink things after that. Future opportunities can be rather exciting up to March but even these will go through change. Unpredictability requires you to keep an open mind. The true intentions of others will be highly unpredictable to March. There could also be secretiveness involved. This will make it hard to for you to feel as though you have any control. It would be wise of you to find some time to yourself away from distractions for thinking, as matters may not be what you presently believe.

Mars has moved into your sign where it will stay for an especially long period until March. This is generating the beginning of a new 2 year cycle but there could be many stops and starts. You might also change your mind. Your energy level will be good. Watch impulsiveness. Distractions will come thick and fast, so be prepared. You will need much patience between now and March. There will be a lot going on that will be hidden from view. This could include people working to pull you down in some way. Be mindful of any new agreements that may have just been reached or that occur shortly. This could operate in two stages before it will become settled.
