Letter to the Editor

As we reflect on the one-year anni versary of the floods and landslides, we are reminded of the enormous loss and overwhelmingly strong com munity spirit of those days. From the pandemic to wildfires, atmospheric

with my riding of Mission-MatsquiFraser Canyon smack in the epicenter of it all. It’s been a year since the fate ful day we heard a rainstorm was on its way to hit B.C., but in our rainy province no one seemed to take too

ing the alarm bells for dike upgrades for decades could not have predicted the level of disaster that struck in November 2021.

Farms were consumed by a lake, sections of roads, highways and homes were literally washed away. The Canadian Armed Forces were dispatched to rescue residents from landslides and sandbag pump stations in Abbotsford.

The Port of Vancouver was rendered to ‘distress’ with over 50 ships stalled in our ports and the Trans Mountain pipeline was shut down leading to gas rationing.

To say we were in a crisis is an un derstatement. Significant gaps in our emergency response and recovery protocols were exposed and this was not a drill. We are now learning the hard way thanks to years of inatten tion of federal and provin cial governments on flood mitigation infrastructure.

The outpouring of com munity generosity was awe-inspiring. Canadians look out for each other and readily gave every thing they had to help one another. We need govern ments to match that spirit with collaborative work outside the box to get things done. Specifically, we need to:

Upgrade our pumps ca pacity accounting for cli mate change and popula tion growth.

Establish a Canadian Armed Forces presence to quickly respond to natural disasters

Improve protocols for working with all levels of government during an emergency and ensure public officials are educated on processes. Special care should be made in recognizing the small administrative capacity of towns in crisis.

Create a First Nation liaison to en sure reserves are receiving the same real-time emergency notifications and assistance municipalities receive through Emergency Services BC.

Rebuild our dikes and flood mitigation infrastructure using sustainable technology.

Canadians generously gave their time, money, badly needed supplies, and shelter at the drop of a hat. As Member of Parliament of MissionMatsqui-Fraser Canyon, I wish to send my deepest gratitude to all who stepped up and selflessly supported our community during our greatest time of need.

UFV Young Distinguished Alumni: Kara Chan making a global impact by combating climate change in Australia

Inside a high-rise office overlooking Sydney’s end less sea of skyscrapers, Kara Chan and her team are helping solve Australia’s most pressing climate and energy-related issues.

On any given day, the team might brainstorm, debate, and build strategic plans around the country’s im pending forest fires, floods, heat waves, energy con sumption, and alternatives, and extreme storms.

The mission: adapt or create critical infrastructure and processes that can withstand the extreme elements. A task that can be incredibly challeng ing considering the rapidly shifting unknowns of climate change.

“When we look at building or main taining existing energy infrastructure, we need to hold them to a higher standard to mitigate the exponential risk based on all of the impacts of climate change,” says Chan, Senior Manager of Climate Resilience Strat egy at Ausgrid, one of Australia’s largest electricity distributors. “We have a lot of the same climate issues as British Columbia, and we need to build these assets to future climate conditions that are meant to last for future generations up to the end of the century.”

At just 30 years old, Chan’s innova tive contributions and growing global influence in the urgent battle against climate change are the reasons why the UFV alumna (BA ‘13) and Ab botsford native was named this year’s UFV Young Distinguished Alumni (YDA) award recipient. The award is given to a UFV graduate under 35 years old who has achieved outstand ing distinction in career, educational achievement, or community service.

“It is incredibly humbling to receive this award, to be honest,” Chan said. “It was not something that I expected

I would be able to accomplish in my career.”

“Kara is passionate about making a difference when it comes to climate change and has been an industry lead er in the space for the last decade,” added Dana Wong, Senior Manager, Renewable and Low Carbon Fuel Strategy at FortisBC, who Chan worked under during her own time at that company (2016-19). “This work that she is currently conduct ing in Australia is some of the first of its kind in the energy networks space and Canadian utilities may also look to adopt some of these industryleading activities.”

Chan’s curiosity for environmental issues originated in the late 2000s as a high school student in Abbotsford. There, a geography class in Grade 12 enlightened her about the impact of the choices we make — from eating meat to driving — had on greenhouse emissions and our collective global footprint.

Her passion for facilitating global change and sustainability continued to blossom at UFV, where she ma jored in political science. Growing up in the Fraser Valley also exposed Chan to extreme weather events like forest fires and atmospheric rivers, as well as Indigenous Reconciliation. At UFV, Chan, who is biracial, worked as a research assistant in the political science program, volunteering for

any cause that furthered gender equality, race relations, and climate change reform.

“Climate change policy, political sci ence, and social justice all go hand in hand, and I was always interested in taking courses that explored the in tersection of those three,” says Chan, who lists Dr. Hamish Telford and Dr. Rita Dhamoon as her most influential political science professors at UFV. “I think it is important to recognize that those who are most impacted by climate change are often those who are most vulnerable, and often that is people of colour.”

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at UFV in 2013, Chan quickly rose up the ranks at local energy companies like BC Hydro and FortisBC, focusing on en ergy conservation and management, and climate action policy. Chan and her husband Ethan relocated halfway across the globe to Sydney in 2019 and she began working at Ausgrid in 2021.

Almost immediately, Chan put cli mate resilience policies at the fore front of national government regula tors and industry leaders. She also led a climate impact assessment of Ausgrid’s network, collaborating with climate scientists to create a white paper that maps out likely fu ture climate situations.

No matter what change she is helping drive in Australia, climate change and social justice issues in her hometown of Abbotsford are never far from her mind.

Chan has an honest and direct per spective of the environmental trends of the last few years in the Fraser Valley, from the heat dome to the catastrophic flooding.

“Our current climate state is the best it’s going to be,” she says. “Unfor tunately, it’s only going to get worse and we need to do as much as pos sible to try and preserve what’s left by reducing our emissions, and adapt to the future risk.”

Chan hopes that if winning the Young Distinguished Alumni award accom plishes anything, it will inspire the next generation of students — par ticularly young women and people of colour — to get involved and edu cated in environmental and sustain ability issues. She is living proof that you can make an immediate impact.

“There’s a lot of power in diversity of thought,” Chan concludes. “Never be afraid to offer ideas that people have never ever thought about or present things in a different way. You’ll be amazed at how much creat ing meaningful change is actually in your control.”

SUPPORTING AN AGING POPULATION EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS: SFU RESEARCH

Improving supports for older adults who expe rience homelessness in three major Canadian cities is the focus of an ongoing study being led by Simon Fraser University adjunct pro fessor Sarah Canham.

The research, high lighted on National Housing Day (Nov. 22), builds on a pilot study that docu mented evidence-based interventions, in shelter and housing services that support persons with experiences of homelessness for people aged 50 and older in Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary – cities that have seen a dramatic increase in homelessness among the 50+ age group. Their new project will evaluate these promis ing practices to improve services for those who are experiencing home lessness.

“This trend is expected to continue as Canada faces an aging population, in creasing urbanization and an ongoing shortage of affordable housing,” says Canham. “Younger baby boomers are particularly at-risk for homelessness due to life course disadvantages as sociated with competitive job and housing markets and resulting chal lenges in accumulating assets to protect against housing insecurity.”

The team will conduct evaluations of 11 shelter/housing practices to determine which are most useful in supporting Aging in the Right Place (AIRP), focusing on four programs in Calgary and Vancouver and three in Montreal. Researchers will con duct interviews with providers and clients, analyze intakes and conduct environmental audits.

Their findings will help to inform decision-makers on issues related to housing, homelessness, health and social service provider’s design and delivery of services.

Older adults have unique challenges such as health and mobility issues often requiring support to live alone. According to Canham, research shows that they face harassment and bullying in emergency shelters from those who are younger than them.

Aging in place—for some, that means the home they have always occupied—may not be possible and researchers suggest the focus should be on aging in the right place, with the right supports for the complex needs of this cohort.

The pilot study identified several categories of shelter/housing for older persons with experiences of homelessness including:

• Emergency, temporary, or transi tional shelter/housing with supports

• Independent housing with offsite supports

• Supported independent housing with onsite non-medical supports

• Permanent supportive housing (PSH) with onsite medical support and/or specialized services

• Long- term care

• Palliative care/hospice

Other SFU researchers involved in the project include Habib Chaud hury, professor and gerontology chair; Atiya Mahmood, gerontology associate professor; Julian Somers health sciences, distinguished pro fessor; Andy Yan, director of SFU’s City Program; and Rachel Weldrick, postdoctoral fellow.

Province urges people to get vaccinated, stay safe during respiratory illness season

Public-health officials are asking all British Columbians to get their influenza and COVID-19 immuniza tions as soon as possible, as rates of respiratory illnesses are on the rise throughout the province.

VID-19 or influenza, until they no longer have a fever (without needing fever-reducing medications) and are well enough to participate in usual daily activities.

Vaccinations remain the best defence against COVID-19 and influenza. Everyone older than six months can get both immunizations for free. People can book their shots through the provincial Get Vaccinated system. While COVID-19 continues to cir culate in communities, the situation has changed. In B.C., more than 90% of the population has built some im munity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus through vaccination, infection or both, and the number of people at risk for serious outcomes from CO VID-19 has dropped significantly.

There are many tools to get people through respiratory illness season. The most important is to maximize protection through vaccination. People are also encouraged to check daily for symptoms of respiratory ill ness, wash their hands regularly and practise respiratory etiquette. This includes wearing a mask if they have mild symptoms, covering coughs and disposing of tissues appropriately.

If people have symptoms of respira tory illness, they should stay home and limit close contact with others, especially those at higher risk of developing severe illness from CO

The Province has been expecting and preparing for an increase in respira tory illnesses, such as COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial vi rus (known as RSV), as people gather more indoors and many viruses that cause respiratory illnesses circulate more in the fall and winter.

Hospitals throughout the province have well-established systems in place to manage high patient vol umes, including regional and pro vincial surge plans. They have been planning for various scenarios and are ready to respond to an influx of patients requiring care for respiratory illnesses.

While hospitals are seeing higherthan-normal volumes of patients with respiratory illnesses, including chil dren, they are not yet experiencing volumes that necessitate activating provincial surge plans that include postponing non-urgent scheduled sur geries and moving patients to other care settings to free up hospital beds.

The Province will continue to care fully monitor respiratory illnesses in B.C., throughout the country and around the globe, and adapt the responses and measures in place as needed to protect public health.

Canadian MPs demand direct flights between Canada and Amritsar, Punjab from Air Canada and Air India

Last week, the Minister of Transport, the Honourable Omar Alghabra, announced the conclusion of an expanded air transport agreement between Canada and India. The expanded agreement will allow des ignated airlines (Air Canada and Air India) to operate an unlimited number of flights between the two countries. The previous agreement limited each country to 35 flights per week. How ever, this new negotiation failed to meet the need of thousands of people that travel between Canada and Punjab, India. Despite many pleads to the government, and designated airlines, there have been no direct flights established between Canada and the state of Punjab.

As a result of this conclusion, Con servative MPs- Brad Vis, MP for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon in B.C. and Conservative Critic for Small Business Recovery and Growth, Conservative Deputy Leader Tim Uppal (MP for Edmonton Mill Woods, Alberta), Conservative Critic for Finance Jasraj Singh Hallan (MP for Calgary Forest Lawn, Alberta) and Conservative Critic for Transport Mark Strahl (MP for ChilliwackHope, B.C.) have written to Air Canada’s President and CEO Michael Rousseau and Air India’s CCO Nipun Aggarwal to state the value of a direct flight between Canada and Amritsar.

Letter:

As Canadian Members of Parliament representing vast and diverse com munities, we write to highlight the significant economic and social value in establishing direct flights between Canada and the state of Punjab.

With the recent renegotiation of the Canada-India Air Transport Agree ment under Canada’s Blue-Sky poli cy, new rights have been granted for airlines to use immediately including unlimited flights between our two countries, expanded from the previ ous limit of 35 flights per week. This

new expansion recognizes the need to facilitate faster and easier travel between Canada and India.

This year, over 14,000 Canadian citi zens and permanent residents joined an official parliamentary petition call ing for the creation of a direct flight from Canada to Amritsar, India in the heart of the state of Punjab. Many families living in Canada have direct ties to family, friends and businesses in the Punjab, however current travel between destinations is lengthy and arduous.

The COVID-19 pandemic high lighted the significant need of flights from Amritsar directly to Canada. At the time of initial lockdowns, 30,000 Canadians were in India when border closures and flight cancellations took effect forcing the federal government to instate 37 repatriation flights, many directly out of Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport to Pearson International Airport in Toronto. The pandemic has shown us that direct flights from Amritsar to Canada is both feasible for air lines and met by a high demand for travellers.

There are currently no direct flights between Canada to Amritsar, India, requiring travellers to make multiple stops along their journey. As the city of the Golden Temple and an impor tant pilgrimage site for hundreds of thousands of our constituents estab lishing a direct flight would lend to stronger relationships between our countries.

As elected members of Parliament representing Canadian-Punjabi con stituents, we encourage Air India to establish direct flights between Canada and Amritsar recognizing the high demand and market opportunity which would symbiotically bolster tourism, trade and empower families to stay connected.

We look forward to your response.

Punjab from Expanded Canada-India Air Agreement Unacceptable- WSO

The World Sikh Organization of Canada has written to Canadian Minister of Transport Omar Al ghabra with respect to the recently expanded Canada-India Air Trans port Agreement. The Agreement provides for unlimited flights between Canada and India be tween selected airports, however, excludes Amritsar and Chandigarh in Punjab, which is home to the majority of the Sikh community and the destination of the majority of travellers from Canada.

The full text of the letter follows below:

November 21, 2022

Hon. Omar Alghabra

Minister of Transport

Dear Minister Alghabra,

RE: Exclusion of Punjab from Ex panded Canada-India Air Transport Agreement

We are writing with respect to the recently expanded Canada-India Air Transport Agreement which was an nounced last week. While expanded transport relationships and the po tential of greater flight options are a positive development, Sikhs in Canada were disappointed to see that airports in Punjab were not included in the agreement.

As you know, Canada is home to a large Sikh community which has strong connections to Punjab. Many Sikhs in Canada have advocated for years to create direct flight options between Canada and Amritsar, with out success. A majority of travelers between Canada and India are con nected to Punjab. As a result of no direct travel options between Canada and Punjab, these travelers are forced to spend substantial extra time and money in order to reach their desti nations.

Since the start of the pandemic, Ca nadian travelers to India continue to face significant hardships such as the continued suspension of the In dian e-visa scheme, which has been restarted for countries such as the USA, Australia, France, Mexico and many others. As a result, Canadians seeking Indian visas are forced to wait between four and six weeks for a visa or wait in line outside of Indian Visa Application centres for hours. Indian ten-year visas which were re stored for citizens in other countries, continue to be suspended in Canada.

So, while the expanded Canada-India Air Transport Agreement may be a positive development for travelers to Kolkata and Chennai, it has left many Sikhs in Canada disappointed and wondering why Punjab has once again been excluded. We would re quest that you work with your Indian counterparts to ease the hardships faced by Canadian travelers to India but also to heed the long-standing demand of creating direct travel links between Canada and Punjab.

We look forward to your timely reply to this matter.

Yours truly, Tejinder Singh Sidhu President

World Sikh Organization of Canada

Archway Toys for Tots Event to Collect Gifts at Sunday Event

The 10th annual Toys for Tots event is being held this Sunday, November 27th at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre. The event collects toys and donations for the Christmas Bureau program of the Archway Food Bank.

Community members are invited to bring gifts and enjoy a free buffet breakfast along with entertainment at the drop-in event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers are hoping for a strong turnout as the event returns to in-person after two years of COVID and flood related interruptions.

visit the photo booth, children’s craft corner, and Santa.

While the event title highlights tod dlers, gifts are also collected for older children, teens and seniors. Organizers request that the gifts are unwrapped and new for safety reasons. Gifts are gathered into a toy mountain that grows throughout the event. Gifts for seniors are gathered under the Seniors Tree, which is sponsored by the Varing Marketing Group.

There is a drive-thru option for those unable to stay long which includes a Starbucks coffee or hot chocolate.

Toys can also be dropped off at the Archway Food Bank during the work week or at drop-off loca tions at partici pating sponsors in the month of November.

The Clarion Ho tel and Confer

With the increased need for food bank services, Supervi sor Rebecca Thuro estimates they will give out more than 2,500 gifts this holiday season to children, youth and seniors.

“So many families are having difficulty providing enough food, and the holiday season just adds to the financial pres sure,” said Thuro.

“We see how relieved caregiv ers are when they’re able to find the perfect gift for their child and can only imagine all the smiles that happen on Christmas morning thanks to the gen erosity of our community.”

The Christmas Bureau toy room opens December 1st and all the toys donated at the event will go directly to stocking the currently empty shelves.

Live entertainment will be provided by the Ever After Character Company, Ryan McAllister, MEI Chamber Sing ers and Marching Band, Creative Edge School of Arts. Cliff Prang is returning as the event emcee and attendees can

ence Centre partners with Archway to host the event and other long-term sponsors like Envision and Jag’s fur niture help cover other event costs and provide volunteers to help run the event.

“Toys for Tots is one of my favorite events of the year,” said event orga nizer Patricia Driessen. “Watching everyone come together to make sure that children in our community can experience the magic of Christmas is such a great way to kick off the holiday season.”

Start a new tradition this holiday season

(NC) It’s that time of the year again: we pick out greeting cards, maybe take a family photo, and open up that box of unique decorations and ornaments.

Other favourite traditions may include putting lights on the house or a fresh tree, or perhaps a reusable one. And, of course, we make plans to visit friends and family to celebrate the holidays and see in the New Year.

This year, why not consider getting to know other traditions, or even creat ing a new tradition with your family or friends?

Here are three idea starters: Host a holiday dessert party – invite colleagues, friends or neighbours to a sweet potluck where they share and describe their favourite traditional des serts that all can enjoy with a cup of egg nog or mulled cider – and be ready to share the recipes digitally, too!

Host a holiday story evening – guests bring a craft, ornament, decoration or photo if it’s too large to bring – and

share its story. How did they acquire it, or why did they buy it, and what does it mean to them?

Create a new giving tradition – char ity gift catalogues like World Vision Canada’s offer a unique opportunity for children to pick a family gift like goats or chickens, or to gift a teacher or grandparent with a meaningful gift like school essentials, crop seeds for farmers, a scarf or jewellery – or a special angel ornament for the tree! Ask children, or help them, to write in the gift cards why they chose that specific gift.

This time of year is so special for so many reasons. Take time to learn the stories behind treats or traditions, and see the holiday season in a new light.

Youth With A Mission visits Richmond Gurdwara

A group of about 25 grades 9 to 12 students, ,their teachers and some church leaders from Paradise Valley, Alberta were in Vancouver recently to do some volunteer work in the community. As part of their visit here they decided to visit Gurdwara

members asked very interesting ques tions and were very curious to learn about Sikhism and the South Asian community in BC and Canada. Later, they were treated to very delicious samosas, cake and tea in the Langar Hall. Before leaving, they profusely

Nanak Niwas and a few other places of worship on Richmond’s Highway to Heaven on November 9. In ad dition to paying their respect at the Gurdwara , they were keen to learn about Sikhism and the South Asian community . It was an honour for me to speak about both of these issues and answer their questions. The group

thanked the Gurdwara management for very warm welcome. Visits like this by students and adults go a long way in creating more pride in our community.

The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Rivian R1 SUV begins Vehicle Deliveries in British Columbia

Rivian, a new EV vehicle manufac turer based in Irving, California has started delivering its well received delivering R1 EV vehicles in Brit ish Columbia, the first outside the United States and the beginning of the company’s international market expansion. Certified by Transport Canada for sale, deliveries of both the all-electric R1T pickup and R1S SUV will take place through the end of 2022 and ramp further in 2023.

Rivian celebrated this milestone with an Open House event in Vancouver on Saturday and Sunday, November 19 and 20—welcoming more than 1,500 local customers and their fami lies for a first look at the company’s flagship vehicles and the chance to interact with team members who work and live in the region.

During the two-day event at Vancou ver’s Rocky Mountaineer Station, visitors learned about the features and capabilities of Rivian’s electric ad venture vehi cles, from the Gear Tun nel to Camp Mode, with expert guid ance from the compa

ny’s service and delivery teams.

“We’re thrilled to begin deliveries in British Co lumbia, not just because it’s a great place to use our products, but because many of our Canadabased employees work ing in software and cus tomer engagement call Vancouver home,” said Tony Caravano, Riv ian’s Senior Director of Customer Engagement. “We’re looking forward to forming new relationships and celebrating as our customers in B.C. embark on their own R1 adventures.”

Starting in British Columbia and ex panding to other provinces over time, Rivian is dedicated to providing a comprehensive ownership experience for Canadian customers as it builds out its network of service centers in the country.

With over 150 employees in the Van couver area, Rivian has established a strong and growing foothold in the region with a focus on building the software that powers the ownership experience from mobile app to invehicle systems. The company has engaged with local universities and educational institutions to create a robust co-op program, leaning on the region’s status as a tech hub to shape the future of vehicle ownership.

The All electric powered 2023 Rivian R1S SUV is a premium luxury orien tated vehicle with either five or seven seat configurations. Rivian’s vehicles are the most distinguishable on the road now with a slightly retro-cool design aesthetic.

The 2023 Rivian R1S has a quadmotor all-wheel drive setup that enables four-wheel torque vectoring. Power equates to a combined 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque. Recharging the Rivian R1S is supported via s 300 kW DC Fast Charging system that takes around 70 minutes to charge up

a Rivian from 10-90 per cent using the correct charger. Completing the full charge on a Level 2 charger will take 12 hours or overnight.

Feature wise, the R1S has several clever ideas. There is an internally rechargeable 1,000 lumens of power flashlight hidden inside the driver’s door. and different brightness set tings. There’s also a portable and removable Bluetooth speaker stored under the centre console and a wire less phone charger that can charge two phones. The Rivian key is of unique carabiner clip design, and there is phone-as-key support, and a key card for your wallet, as well as waterproof bracelet that can all be used to lock and unlock the Rivian. Another cool feature is the integrated air compressor ideal for low tire pres sure or for recreational use.

The R1S demonstrates versatility with its maximum towing capacity of 7,700 lbs. a frunk with 311 litres of cargo space, while the rear cargo can accommodate 200 litres. The equip ment spec is very high as befits the brands premium standing and there are a number of Rivian upgrades and options, including alternate wheels, paint color options and off-road features.

Final pricing is to be official con firmed staring at $94,000 for the en try-level Explore trim, and $101,250 for the Adventure trim. More infor mation at www.rivian.com. (Sources Rivian press.)

Fraser Valley poultry farms test positive for avian influenza

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed seven commer cial poultry farms in the Fraser Valley tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza between Nov. 16 and 19, 2022.

Six infected premises in Abbotsford and one in Chilliwack have been placed under quarantine by the CFIA. The B.C. government has notified produc ers within a 10-kilometre radius of each of the positive test results.

The risk of avian influenza to com mercial poultry farms and small flocks increases each spring and fall with the

migration of waterfowl and other birds to and through British Columbia.

Since the first 2022 confirmation of avian influenza in B.C. poultry in mid-April, there have been 36 cases in B.C. Eighteen were before June, and 18 since September after the fall migration began. Of the 36 cases, 14 were on commercial farms, 21 in small flocks and one in a captive wild bird.

Avian influenza is a federally regu lated disease, and the CFIA leads the investigation and response with pro vincial support for testing, mapping, surveillance and disposal. B.C.’s Min

istry of Agriculture and Food continues to work closely with the CFIA and B.C. poultry producers to ensure enhanced pre vention and prepared ness measures are in place to protect poultry flocks.

To reduce the risk of the virus spread ing, B.C.’s chief veterinarian issued an order on Sept. 14, 2022, requiring all regulated, quota-holding chicken and turkey operations to maintain indoor operations. On Oct. 14, a second or

der was issued requiring birds not be taken to commingling events, such as auctions, poultry swaps, bird shows and fairs.

To help small-flock owners prepare, the ministry is hosting free, online infor mation sessions on Nov. 30 and Dec. 5, 2022. The registration link is below.
