Government of Canada allowing more international youth to work and travel in Canada

Canada benefits when diverse, engaged, and empowered youth are able to come from abroad to gain meaningful work and life experiences here.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Min ister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, launched the 2023 In ternational Experience Canada (IEC) Program with a 20% increase in the number of applicants who can apply.

Applicants will be able to apply as of January 9, 2023.

IEC is a reciprocal program that allows Canadian and international youth to work and travel in each oth er’s countries. This increase means that nearly 90,000 candidates will be able to work and travel in Canada, including Francophone youth, which will help employers fill labour gaps, including for seasonal work opportu nities in Canada’s tourism industry.

Families in B.C. getting ahead as child care fees are reduced

Investments in child care continue to save money for families throughout British Columbia by putting money back into the pockets of parents and making life more affordable as child care fee reductions take effect.

“At a time when global inflation is driving up the cost of so many essen tials, child care fees are going down in B.C.,” said Premier David Eby.

toward delivering $10-a-day child care across the country and build an economy that works for all Canadi ans.”

Increased reductions in child care fees of up to $550 more per child per month took effect on Dec. 1, 2022, and are helping approximately 69,000 families with the cost of child care. This is in addition to the savings

“That’s because we chose to invest in children and families. Expanding ac cess to high-quality, affordable child care opens up access to opportunity – and is key to making sure we have the skilled workforce we need to keep our communities running.”

The ChildCareBC plan, launched in 2018, began as a vision of uniting a patchwork of programs and services, and addressing skyrocketing fees that were increasingly putting child care out of reach for many families, and to build child care as a core service that families can depend upon. Through historic investments at the provincial level and a partnership with the fed eral government, child care in B.C. is more affordable, accessible and higher quality.

“As of yesterday, we cut child care fees in half on average across British Columbia – saving families up to an additional $550 a month per child,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “Our plan to make life more afford able is delivering concrete results for parents who are struggling with the rising cost of living and ensuring every child can get the best possible start in life. We’re going to continue to be there for people as we work

of up to $350 per month per child that were introduced in 2018 and which participating child care providers were already passing on to families.

“As parents of three kids – a toddler, a preschooler and a school-aged child – the reduction in fees is ab solutely life changing,” said Reut Dahan, a parent at Richmond Jewish Day School. “Thanks to this amaz ing program being implemented, our costs are now reduced by over $1,000 a month, allowing both of us to work full time and easing some of our financial stress. We have peace of mind knowing that our children are enjoying the benefits of safe and quality child care.”

Additionally, with the most recent batch of more than 2,450 spaces that have moved into the $10 a Day ChildCareBC program as of Dec. 1, 2022, there are more than 10,500 $10 a Day spaces in B.C. Thousands more spaces are under negotiation and expected to be implemented in the coming weeks.

The expansion of the $10 a Day program and the enhanced savings, which build on investments made as part of the Province’s $2.7-billion

investment in ChildCareBC since 2018, are being funded through the 2021-22 to 2025-26 $3.2-billion Canada-British Columbia Canadawide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.

“Richmond Jewish Day School pro vides families with quality, affordable childcare in an inclusive, licensed facility that honours and promotes Jewish culture and traditions,” said Sabrina Bhojani, principal, Rich mond Jewish Day School. “We are extremely grateful that the Govern ment of B.C. has prioritized early learning and child care. In addition to setting up our students for a smooth and seamless transition into kinder garten, these investments in child care will have long-lasting, positive effects on the well-being of children and families in B.C.”

In addition, the Province continues to make investments for all fami lies to access affordable child care through the Affordable Child Care Benefit. Families earning as much as $111,000 per year may be eligible for additional help with the cost of child care.

“We know families in B.C. are strug gling with the cost of living, and a lot of parents are worried about making ends meet heading into the holiday season,” said Katrina Chen, B.C.’s Minister of State for Child Care. “With parents in B.C. now saving as much as $900 per month on their child care fees, we know that British Columbians are feeling the benefit of our government’s efforts to make life more affordable. This is bringing us another step closer to $10-a-day child care for all families that need or want it and helping families get ahead.”

Since the launch of ChildCareBC, the provincial government, with sup port from the federal government, has also funded the creation of more than 30,500 new licensed child care spaces, with 10,500 of spaces open and more than 20,000 more spaces in development or construction.

The Province has also improved training and professional develop ment opportunities and wages for the early childhood educators needed to deliver this important service.

Families urged to get children vaccinated before the holidays

Public-health officials are encourag ing families and caregivers to get their kids vaccinated against influ enza in advance of the holidays.

There are several respiratory viruses causing illness in B.C. Some children have had more severe illness in the past few weeks, particularly from influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Many children have not been exposed to influenza and other respiratory illnesses following two years of low influenza rates due to COVID-19

this time of year, but it is important to make this part of your plans. To help, we are making it even easier to get your child immunized in the coming days. This helps ensure everyone can stay healthy and enjoy the festivities.”

The best way to protect children from influenza is to get them vaccinated. This has the added advantage of also protecting other vulnerable family members and friends, as well as eas ing the pressure on the health-care system.

In B.C., influenza immunizations

public-health prevention measures implemented worldwide, including Canada and B.C. This is why it’s especially important for children to get vaccinated against influenza now.

Children, especially those under the age of five, anyone with underlying medical conditions such as asthma or heart disease, pregnant people and people over the age of 65 are most vulnerable to severe illness or complications from influenza, such as pneumonia and respiratory failure.

“As we head into the holiday season, I strongly encourage families and caregivers to get their children vac cinated against influenza, especially if they’re planning to spend time with elderly loved ones,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer. “I know families are busy, especially at

are free for everyone six months and older. Children two and older have the option to get a flu shot or a nasal spray vaccine. Those under age nine who have never had a flu vaccine need two doses.

“Since it began in October, we have had a very enthusiastic response to the influenza campaign,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, executive lead for B.C.’s vaccine operations program. “At health authority clinics, commu nity pharmacies and health-care pro vider offices, we’ve vaccinated over 1.5 million people, but the uptake has been low for children. We would like to invite all parents and caregivers of children who have not received the influenza vaccine to register their kids in the Get Vaccinated system and book an appointment. Our health

authority clinics are flexible for those who wish to drop in, and many family physicians have influenza vaccine to vaccinate children in their offices.”

Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, said: “I am encouraged to see that this year is a record year of influenza vaccination in B.C. among older people thus far. This is particularly important as people plan indoor cel ebrations for the holiday season with friends and family of all ages, some of whom are at risk of serious effects from flu. However, we need to see a higher vaccination rate among young people. Therefore, I ask everyone to

Families and caregivers are encour aged to register their children in the GetVaccinated system, if they have not already, at: https://www.getvac cinated.gov.bc.ca/s/

There are five ways to book an in fluenza immunization for your child:

Book an appointment at a health authority clinic or pharmacy through the provincial Get Vaccinated sys tem: https://www.getvaccinated.gov. bc.ca/s/

Book an appointment by phoning the provincial call centre (toll-free): 1 833 838-2323.

do their part and get themselves and their kids vaccinated to help protect them and their loved ones, as well as our health-care system. I also want to thank our health-care professionals, primary care providers and publichealth immunization teams for their continued dedication in caring for British Columbians during this respi ratory season.”

To ensure an extra push to have more children vaccinated before the holi days, the influenza vaccine program throughout B.C. will be doing a blitz of clinics with lots of walk-in capac ity on Friday, Dec. 9, and Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022.

B.C. has a more than ample supply of influenza vaccine available for children and many appointments available throughout the province. If your child also needs a COVID-19 immunization, they can likely get it at the same time.

Book an appointment with your pri mary health-care provider if they are providing flu shots.

Visit a pharmacy or health authority clinic offering walk-in appointments. Pharmacies can provide an influenza shot for children aged five and older.

If you have already received an in vitation for influenza immunization for your child via email and/or text message, use it to book an appoint ment and get vaccinated.

Vaccination is safe. Any side-effects are typically very mild and go away on their own within a few days.

In addition to getting vaccinated, it’s important keep children home if they’re sick, encourage them to wear masks if they’re experiencing mild symptoms, remind them to frequently wash their hands and teach them proper respiratory etiquette, such as covering their coughs and properly disposing of tissues.

Canada announces National Funders selected to support charities and non-profits

Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) will distribute the Community Services Recovery Fund to charities, non-profits and Indigenous Governing Bodies.

On November 23rd, the Minister of Families, Children and Social Devel opment, Karina Gould, announced that

Bodies to invest in their own organiza tional capacity to:

• adapt the way they deliver services to support the needs of their staff and volunteers;

• buy equipment such as computers and software;

Community Foundations of Canada alongside Canadian Red Cross, and United Way Centraide Canada have been selected to distribute funding to help a broad and diverse range of chari ties, non-profits and Indigenous Gov erning Bodies adapt and modernize, so they can support pandemic recovery in communities across Canada.

The Abbotsford Community Founda tion is proud to be working with com munity foundations across Canada as part of the Community Services Recovery Fund. The Community Ser vices Recovery Fund is a one-time in vestment of $400 million that will help charities, non-profits and Indigenous Governing Bodies to acquire the tools they need to adapt and modernize so they can better support pandemic re covery in communities across Canada.

Since the early phases of the pandemic, charities, non-profits, and Indigenous Governing Bodies have struggled with increased demand for their services, reduced revenues, declines in chari table giving due to the rising cost of living, and a greater need to make use of digital tools as part of adapting and modernizing their operations.

Funding from the Community Services Recovery Fund will enable charities, non-profits, and Indigenous Governing

• create new ways of working, such as developing new fundraising ap proaches;

• provide support for staff and volun teers, such as staff training, supports for mental health and wellbeing; and

• develop plans to receive funding from diverse sources.

As a result of the investments provided by the Community Services Recov ery Fund, charities, non-profits, and Indigenous Governing Bodies will be better equipped to improve the efficacy, accessibility, and sustainability of the community services that they provide.

“The Government supports a more in clusive model of economic growth that creates opportunities for everyone in Canada as the long-term recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Dodge Durango SRT 392 : 475 Horsepower performance SUV

First off let’s gets straight to the good stuff! The Dodge Durango SRT SUV offers a stonking Hemi V-8 provides 475 horsepower, and in our testing, it propelled the Durango SRT from 0 – 96 kph in just 4.7 seconds, with top speed of 257kph. Now that’s seriously quickapproaching luxury ultra- performance vehicle performance from the likes of Porsche and Mercedes that cost more than twice the Durango’s price! In fact Dodge claims the SRT as North America’s fastest seven-seater SUV!

leather-wrapped instrument panel. A fancy hood and body stripe package is also available.

However, utility is not compromised. The full-size four –door Durango still offers three rows of seating but has been massaged with the 6.4-litre V8, with Fuel Saver MDS technology hooked to an 8-Speed TorqueFlite auto trans mission. The exterior receives the SRT treatment with a gaggle oof air scoops, ducts and vents in the hood and front valence. Nicely flared fenders are filled by 20-inch black-finished alloy wheels wrapped in performance tires. big twin exhaust, and a plethora of functional air vents and intakes. Stopping power is also uprated to cope with extra horse power in the form of high performance Brembo brakes. An uprated suspension with Bilstein adaptive shocks rounds out the package.

Standard features on the SRT 392 include navigation, leather-and-micro suede seats with heating and ventilation for those up front, heated second-row captain's chairs, and three-zone auto matic climate control. Options include cool red seat belts, a premium 19 speak er audio system and the Technology Group package with its adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, and other driver-assistance features. Buyers will no doubt be attracted by the extra cost SRT Interior Appearance Group that offers a suede headliner, carbon-fibre interior accents, and a

Interior wise, there is an optional $3,250 SRT Interior Appearance Group comprising carbon-fibre details, suede trim, SRT badging and other bit and pieces. Buyers also gain a sports flatbottom steering wheel with paddle shifters. There is comfortable, as standard Nappa leather seats that are heated and ventilates. The roomy in terior features, the standard second-row captain’s chairs, and a two-person third-row bench. Although there is also the option of a threeperson middle bench that deletes the third-row bench seat. The SRT is as roomy and family friendly as the normal Durango. Both firstand second-row occupants get heated seats; the fronts also get cooling. In terms of cargo space, behind the third row is a smallish 487, but with all seats folded the Durango SRT stretches to 2,392 L.

Feature wise, the SRT comes equipped with all the power conveniences you could wish for. There is a responsive 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment sys tem with clear bright graphics and the menu is intuitive and easy to navigate. Excellent connectivity and infotain ment features, plus big user-friendly controls are highlights. One neat trick is the ability to adjust the performance parameters of the SRT Durango via various SRT Drive Modes and Perfor mance Pages programs. You can also monitor and measure your results and performance times with this feature. Oil temperature, oil pressure, transmis sion temp, and air intake temperature. Available drive models include – auto, sport, track, tow, custom, and valet, plus adjustable performance param eters for the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, stability control, steering feel, throttle response, and suspension stiffness. Autonomous driver-assist aid includes lane-departure warning, lanekeep assist, adaptive cruise and active emergency braking as option.

On the road, the Dodge Durango SRT offers blistering straight-line perfor mance, the dramatic acceleration is accompanied by the roar of that huge

V8 and the burbling per formance exhaust. Stand ing starts are a hoot as the SRT just about aces anything at the lights. You can also tune and cus tomize the performance parameters by choosing one of the seven Drive Modes. The remapped 8-speed auto matic transmission delivers blazingly fast transitions and if it takes your fancy, you can use the paddle shifters for manual type gear changes. Traction and road holding is superb thanks to the handling package and quick steering. The full-time all-wheel drive can send up to 70 per cent of drive rearward. Yes, it is fast, but the SRT Durango is still a well-mannered comfortable cruiser in and around town. Fuel consump tion is rated at (liters/100 km): 18.3 city/12.2 hwy.

Downsides are few. The SRT 392 is expensive, not very low key, its loud and proud of its V8 and scarily intimi

dating- exactly what its dedicated buy ers want! However it can seat seven in roomy comfort and will give you thrills and straight-line performance that you won’t find in any other SUV.

Not enough power for you, well an available 710-hp Durango SRT Hell cat might suffice, billed as the fastest SUV on the planet- but that’s another story! Once for die hard V8 muscle fans everywhere!

How to cope when interest rates rise

(NC) Recent increases in interest rates make borrowing more expensive. And this comes at a time when Canadians have record high levels of household debt. Large household debt not only makes us more financially vulnerable, but also affects the economy. It’s not always easy, but trying to pay down debt and avoiding new debt as much as possible will help you build resilience when interest rates are higher.

In addition to saving on everyday ex penses like bringing your lunch to work instead of eating out, here are some ways to cope with an interest rate hike: Pay down your debt with the highest interest rate first (you’ll pay less inter est in the long run).

Consolidate high interest debts, such as credit cards, into a loan with a lower interest rate.

Build up an emergency fund to deal with unexpected expenses, such as covering higher loan payments to avoid penalties.

Re view ing your budget

When inter est rates

rise and your debt payments increase, it’s important to review and adjust your budget. If you don’t have a budget, set one. A budget can help you stick to a debt repayment plan and estab lish spending priorities. You can use the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s free interactive online budget planner to create a personalized budget. It includes tips, advice and alerts to help you take charge of your personal finances.

If you expect challenges in making your payments after reviewing your budget, be proactive and don’t wait to seek help. Discuss your options with your bank. They may be able to offer temporary accommodations.

How to prepare for a major move

(NC) Whether you’re relocating to feed your dream or out of necessity, a big cross country move or change of country involves lots of planning. Here are some key tips to help you have a smooth transition.

Don’t skimp on the research

You don’t know what you don’t know, so take your time with research to build your knowledge so you can best prepare. It’s important to get specific when it comes to research on important aspects like climate, job prospects, cost of living and health care options. In one country alone, the answers to these questions can vary significantly.

Learn about lived experiences

Theoretical research is one important factor, but lived experience is another. Connect with immigrant or expatriate groups online or through consular services before you make your move to get real-world, practical tips about life in your future home. Ask them

about what sur prised them or what they wish they’d known before they arrived.

Get your finances ready

There’s no doubt about it, moving far from home is an expensive endeav our. The sooner you can start saving up for costs of transporting your life and getting set up in your new loca tion, the more money you’ll have to work with. To make this easier, look to move money or open an account before you arrive. In Canada, for instance, permanent residents, inter national students and foreign workers can open a bank account digitally up to a year before arriving here through BMO’s NewStart program.

New cabinet ready to take action on cost of living, health care, housing, climate

Premier David Eby has announced a new cabinet made of experience and new energy that will focus on tackling the problems people are facing, and working to make life better for British Columbians.

“British Columbia is a wonderful place to live, but people are looking for action on the issues facing them and their families,” Premier Eby said. “If the pandemic taught us anything, it's that we can't solve these prob lems alone. We need to solve them together. My team of determined col leagues will use a wealth and variety of experiences to continue the good work we’ve started and go further to deliver results people can see and feel in their communities.”

The new cabinet members are tasked with helping regular British Columbi ans with the cost of living, strength ening the health-care system, tackling the housing crisis so people can find affordable, attainable homes, mak ing communities safer, advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peo ples, fighting the impacts of climate change and building a sustainable, clean-energy economy that works for everyone.

Shaping the future of immigration through Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy

Canada’s relationship with the Indo-Pacific region has been forged through generations of deep person-to-person connections.

As a major source of newcomers to Canada and the fastest growing economic region in the world, the Indo-Pacific will continue to play a vital role in Canada’s immigration strategy.

As part of the Indo-Pacific Strategy, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Min ister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced how invest ments in our immigration system will

What’s more, international students make immense social and economic contributions to Canada. In recent years, the Indo-Pacific region has accounted for nearly two thirds of the international students Canada welcomes. Thousands of those stu dents transition to permanent resi dence in Canada each year, while thousands more return home after completing their education, taking with them a personal connection to Canada. Funding received through the Indo-Pacific Strategy will help strengthen Canada’s International Student Program and promote greater

allow Canada to grow and prosper. An investment of $74.6 million over 5 years, and $15.7 million ongoing, will boost our application processing capacity both domestically and in the Indo-Pacific region—including New Delhi, Chandigarh, Islamabad and Manila. These new resources will bolster ongoing efforts to process the high volume of visa applica tions from the region, contribute to improved processing times, and sup port people-to-people ties, all with the goal of bringing more people to Canada—whether to visit, study, work or immigrate permanently— and doing it faster.

diversity in the region among those looking to study here. By giving them access to permanent residence and job opportunities that could lead to staying in Canada, these investments will attract students, who frequently become the highly skilled workers Canada needs to meet the challenges of our economy today and tomorrow.

The Government of Canada recog nizes the significant and profound role the Indo-Pacific region will play in our future. By investing in our immigration system and build ing a strong mutual partnership with the Indo-Pacific, we demonstrate Canada’s commitment to long-term prosperity for both regions.

Listen carefully to what someone else might actually mean by what they are saying. They may not be straightforward and this will be to benefit them, not you. Looking back to the past and what has taken place with them could enlighten you in some way. The main thing is not to agree to anything just because it sounds good.

Open and easy interaction can take place with somebody else, even a friend that gives you a comfortable feeling. Then they could become secretive or shut off for no apparent reason. It would not be wise to establish priorities in your own life around relying on them. They could be guarded about what is important to them.

Any responsibilities you have avoided in the past could come back to haunt you now. This could generate a lot more work than would have originally have been the case. Interactions with others, including social activity can become busy from now into December. This could mean catching up with people from the past as well.

It could be worthwhile to look at doing something you have enjoyed in the past, mainly for relaxation. You could realise you have learnt a lot in between time and that making it part of your future again could be wise. You will need to focus on daily routines into December and apply some sort of order for effective handling.

You can come into contact with people that are unique in some way and where you feel as though you are on the same page as them. This could also be a friend or colleague you have not seen in a while. Social activity is likely to pick up from now into early December. Having got things in order of late will leave you free to enjoy.

It might be wise to start thinking and communicating over any plans you might want to make involving family between now and 10th December. It could be difficult to get definite answers to begin with, so it might take some persistence. What you will have to watch is ending up with the majority of the responsibilities to deal with.

A very busy time is about to begin that will go into early December. You might need to keep your wits about you because you can be pulled in many different directions making it easy to forget some things. The other thing you have to watch is ending up with more to handle than anybody else because of being too generous with your time.

The focus is beginning to turn away from you personally to your finances into early December. Anything involving another person and finances may not be as clear as you have presumed. It may now place you in a situation where you need to make other financial decisions on a personal level. It is not a time to risk anything.

Both Mercury, the planet of thought and Venus the planet of peace, balance and harmony move into your sign this week until 7th and 10th December. Life could at last become clearer and seem to be going your way. You should think about yourself in this time in relation to just being happy. Perhaps buy some new clothes too.

You will need to find some peaceful time to yourself into early December to perhaps collect your thoughts and focus on the most balanced way to move forward later. Whatever you need to deal with on a daily basis will continue to be busy and full of distractions. This is why a calm and withdrawing approach will be necessary.

A good time to catch up with friends or attend any sort of group activity will be from now into early December. Don’t feel guilty about altering your obligations or leaving them until later. A social event that didn’t take place in the past could come up again. This could involve a freer attitude on the part of other people in some way.

Challenges could start to become obvious in relation to any future directions you might have been considering lately. It will be easier now to recognise how this could get out of hand because when you get down to details, there is a lot more to the situation than was initially apparent. Be realistic about the commitment you can make.
