How to make achievable New Year’s resolutions
(NC) It’s that time of year where many of us think about setting a goal or resolution for the year ahead. It will come as no surprise that keeping a New Year’s resolution can be tricky for most people.
Fortunately, there are scientifically proven strategies that can be used to help people better realize their goals. Here are some simple, evidence-based tips to help you stay on track:
Nudges
These are gentle reminders that work to influence the choices available to a person at the point of decision-making, so as to make it easier to comply with the desired behaviour. Try connecting with a friend or family member, telling each other your goals and committing to giving each other nudges to stick to them.
E-messages
Electronic messages such as emails, texts and phone notifications will pro-
vide you with a series of prompts or reminders until the completed task is done. Set these up to get you started on your goal, and if it’s something ongoing like exercising twice a week, make sure these reminders occur regularly to prompt you.
With COVID-19 still circulating and a bad flu season upon us, a great goal to set is developing a plan for if you develop a serious illness. Plan Well Guide is a free online tool that focuses on helping people make an advance medical care plan and uses these evidence-based practices to help people realize their goals.
The benefits of making your medical care plan in advance are that you are more likely to get the medical care that is right for you if you develop a serious illness, like COVID-19 or pneumonia, and you and your family will have greater peace of mind. Find more information at planwellguide.com.

Cold and flu season is here: ways you can avoid getting sick
(NC) It’s that time of the year, when respiratory viruses like the flu to make the rounds, and every year you hope to avoid them. While there’s no guarantee that you won’t get sick this year, there are plenty of tried-and-true steps you can take to help reduce your risk of catching the flu or getting really sick if you do catch it.
1. Get your flu shot
It’s the best way to prevent getting sick with the flu.
It helps you reduce the risk of spreading the flu to those around you, including those most at risk of getting seriously ill from it, such as children under five.
It’s effective, safe, and serious side effects of the vaccine are rare.
It’s approved for everyone ages six months and up.
2. Use simple preventative measures
Wear a well-fitting, well-constructed mask.
Wash your hands regularly.
Regularly clean high-touch surfaces. Improve ventilation indoors.
3. Take steps to stay healthy overall
Try to set a regular sleep schedule and get enough zzzs.
Aim to get regular exercise and eat a balanced diet.
Keep up to date with all routine vaccinations for children and adults.
If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, find more information on where to book a vaccination at canada.ca/flu.
The importance of self-care
(NC) When hearing the words “selfcare,” some people may think it means indulging yourself, such as getting a massage or buying yourself a treat. In some ways it can include these types of things, but it is also much more. Whatever your form of self-care, there is real value in taking care of yourself in simple, regular ways. For you, it might be your daily walk through the neighbourhood, a good chat with a friend or a session with a therapist.
Taking care of your physical and mental health can help you handle difficult experiences, help you feel more confident in yourself and your abilities and improve your ability to regain some control after you’ve been through a tough time.
Of course, many things can affect mental well-being, and they aren’t all within our control. But, having things to look forward to and putting aside time to prioritize yourself are important parts of everyone’s well-being. As many of us learn the hard way, you
can’t do your best for anyone else if you’re not showing up for yourself. If even the small things seem challenging or you’re finding that emotions like sadness, worry, loneliness or anger are long-lasting or interfering with your daily routines, it may be time to reach out for help. This is another important act of self-care itself.
There are many free and credible mental health resources available online, including self-guided therapy, one-on-one counselling with qualified health professionals and moderated peer-to-peer support. You can find more information about these resources at canada.ca/mental-health.

(NC) It can be extra difficult to grow or maintain healthy habits when the cost of living is high. With an overloaded health care system, it’s also a benefit to stay in shape. Here are few budget-friendly ways to help you stay healthy this year.
Choose in-season produce: We all know fruits and veggies are a core part of any healthy meal plan. So, learn to love some cheaper staples as they rotate through the season. Winter squash is a delicious choice that can feed a crowd and be incorporated into everything from baked goods and pasta to casseroles and winter salads.
lower, and set your freezer at -18°C (0°F) or lower so your ingredients are stored safely.
Protect your sleep: Sleep is precious for your health, but it can be hard to come by. Skip the pricey home remedies and consider adjusting your routine instead. Plan to go to bed at roughly the same time every night and wind down with a library book or podcast. It’s easier said than done, but if you can just let it go, you might start to fall asleep.
Build activity into your day: Exercise doesn’t have to mean joining a gym or subscribing to costly programs. Take advantage of movement you get day to day, like choosing a hilly route when you take the dog out or doing a little dance while you wash the dishes. You’ll be more likely to fit in free activity if it’s a simple extension of your routine.

(NC) Alongside physical health, mental health is an essential part of our overall well-being. Being mentally healthy can help you enjoy life, while coping with its challenges.
Many factors can affect it, and they aren’t all within our control. But we can take some actions to care for ourselves and help protect our mental health overall. Here are some ideas to help you boost your mental health on
Learn to recognize your patterns: Do you binge on junk food when you’re stressed and then feel guilty about it? Or forget to eat when you’re overwhelmed? Maybe you tend to get snappy when you’re feeling tired. Once you recognize common patterns in your own thoughts or behaviours you can try to plan ahead to prevent them, like stocking up on healthy meals ahead of a busy season at work or doing your best to get enough sleep.
a day-to-day and longer-term basis.
Get some regular exercise: Whether it’s playing a team sport, going for a walk or doing yoga, and whether it lasts 5 minutes or 50 minutes, getting your body moving can have a positive impact on your mental health
Reach out to others: Feeling lonely and socially isolated can harm anyone’s mental health. Connect with family and friends or join activities like recreational sports or a choir where you can meet new people. Even if it feels intimidating to reach out, positive social connections are a crucial part of well-being.
Find what’s meaningful to you: We all need something fulfilling in our life to help give it meaning. Experiment to see what activities or practices bring you joy or satisfaction and make them part of your routine. Re-evaluating your goals can be an important part of this process too.
Remember what you can and can’t control: Taking a few moments to be mindful, thinking about the big picture, and recognizing the things you can and cannot change can be valuable ways to shift perspective and get you thinking more positively.
Consider working with a professional: If you feel like you’re struggling with your mental health, there is help available. Seeking out extra support can help you get through whatever challenges you’re facing in the moment.
While we all struggle from time to time, if you find you’re experiencing long-lasting sadness, worry, loneliness or anger, or if these feelings are interfering with your daily routines, consider reaching out for help.

(NC) The beginning of the new year is a great time to reorganize and recharge your life. Here are three things to add to your home improvement to-do list.
Clean or replace your filters
Regularly changing the filter in your furnace improves indoor air quality and the lifespan of the equipment. Humidifiers, heat-recovery ventilators (HRVs) and wall-mounted ductless air conditioners all have filters that need cleaning or replacing. Check their manuals for suggested intervals.
There are also washable filters in the exhaust vent over your stove. Some can simply go in the dishwasher.
Inspect your smoke and CO detectors
Your home should have smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors on every floor and near all the bedrooms. They should be periodically vacuumed to remove any dust buildup. If
they have a backup battery, replace it twice a year. Others have 10-year built-in batteries. Look for a label on the unit saying when it should be replaced.
Maintain your electronics
The various devices in our homes, from phones and tablets to computers and TVs, rely on software to operate. Developers regularly issue software updates to keep the device working efficiently and help prevent security breaches. Install updates as soon as you receive them. Better yet, enable automatic software updates where available.

Improved processes will help renters, landlords
Renters and landlords in B.C. will soon benefit from more timely and efficient supports and services as government takes action to speed up and strengthen residential tenancy dispute resolution.
“Renters and landlords have been clear that the current residential tenancy dispute resolution process isn’t working fast enough to address their needs,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “We hear you and we are taking action to speed up service and strengthen enforcement to address things like repeat or serious offences like illegal evictions, so renters and landlords can get the fair treatment and timely support they deserve.”
Government is increasing the Residential Tenancy Branch’s (RTB) operating budget and staffing by 40%, adding as many as 50 new full-time employees to cut waiting times and doubling the size of the Compliance and Enforcement Unit (CEU). The CEU was launched in 2019 to investigate complaints and take action on repeat or serious residential tenancy
offences, such as illegal evictions, and levy monetary penalties, if necessary.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and overall demand from more people moving to B.C., the RTB has received a high volume of applications. Waiting times for dispute resolution remain long. This new investment of as much as $15.6 million over three years is a significant injection of new staff and resources to improve service delivery and speed up waiting times for hearings.
“As tenants grapple with the ongoing housing and eviction crises, it is essential that they can access and enforce their rights at the RTB,” said Robert Patterson, lawyer, Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre (TRAC). “This additional support for the RTB will mean that tenants whose landlords are ignoring the law can have their urgent concerns addressed sooner. TRAC hopes that adding more staff will mean not only that tenants’ cases will be heard more quickly, but also that arbitrators will have the time and support they need
to give well-reasoned decisions. We also applaud the government’s investment in the Compliance and Enforcement Unit, which has been an incredible resource for tenants, by preventing illegal evictions and taking meaningful action against badfaith landlords.”
Doubling the size and increasing the capacity of the CEU will improve its ability to address serious issues and ensure people are getting fair treatment. It will also allow the CEU to intervene earlier and prevent the need for hearings in the first place, and also take on more cases, which will reduce matters that escalate into multiple requests to the RTB for arbitration.
“Not only will this new investment alleviate financial concerns for landlords by allowing them to solve rental disputes faster, but it will also ensure that their unit is available to provide housing to people in B.C. at a time when it’s needed most,” said David Hutniak, CEO, LandlordBC. “We are pleased to see this government take action to resolve a process they recog-
nize isn’t working. We look forward to continuing to work alongside them to create better solutions for landlords and renters in our province.”
In addition to hiring more staff, the RTB will continue to revitalize its dispute resolution processes to make those processes more user-focused and easier to navigate. This includes an increase in early intervention to resolve disputes without a hearing. The RTB is in the process of making enhancements to its online service portal, which has sped up the application process.
This funding builds on actions government has taken to better protect renters since 2017, including capping rent increases below inflation at 2% in 2023, banning illegal renovictions, launching Canada’s first provincewide rent bank, closing the fixedterm lease loophole, ending all strata rental-restriction bylaws and limiting age-restriction bylaws in strata
ing with the exception of 55 and older.

New Year’s resolutions you can actually stick to
(NC) For many of us, it’s an annual tradition: come up with New Year’s resolutions so we can be our best selves, diligently follow the plan for a few days or weeks, and then ditch the resolutions and go back to our usual habits.
Part of the problem is that we often set overly ambitious targets. Once we start to fall behind on our goals, we eventually give up in frustration. This year, set some goals you can actually achieve.
Ease into exercise
Most of us would benefit from some more physical activity. But joining a gym or signing up for classes can feel daunting. Instead, start small. Find a friend who you can go on a brisk walk with two or three times a week. If you’re back in the office, consider riding your bike to work once a week. Get off the bus or subway a couple stops early and walk the rest of the way. And use the stairs a couple of times a week instead of taking the elevator.
Master home cooking
We’ve all felt the pinch of inflation. One way to save money on meals is to skip restaurant and takeout meals and prepare your food at home. Cooking at home also gives you control over how much sugar, salt and fat you consume.
If you’re the kind of person who eats out for almost every meal, set a goal of making at least one dinner at home a week - and make extra so you can have leftovers or freeze it for another day.
If you already cook at home regularly, encourage your children to join in and learn a valuable life skill. Inspire variety by challenging yourself to try one new recipe every week.
Get to bed earlier
Regular, restful sleep boosts your mood, health and cognitive functioning. Try to have your head hit the pillow 30 minutes to an hour earlier than you’re used to.
Start by avoiding caffeinated drinks and vigorous activities late in the day. To help you fall asleep earlier, put away
your phone and laptop and turn off the TV at least an hour before you plan to go to bed. Instead, dim the lights in your room, and maybe curl up with a book. Protect your digital self
Make this the year you protect yourself from cybercrime. Don’t reuse a password for multiple purposes or accounts. If you’re worried about remembering all your passwords, consider using a password manager. With this tool, you only have to remember one password to access all your accounts.
For a higher level of security, consider using passphrases instead of passwords. Passphrases are a series of four or more random words that are easy for you to remember, but almost
impossible for cybercriminals to guess, such as BathroomLampClosetMug.
Also set up a schedule to make sure all your devices and software are updated. Better yet, enable automatic updates whenever possible. Make a habit of clearing your cache and browser history after browsing online, and always log out of your accounts.

Is mortgage protection worth considering?
(NC) Moving into a new home or renovating your current one can be an exciting time with many decisions – from renovations and upgrades, to landscaping and furniture selection. But in tough economic times it can feel risky.
And while these decisions are important, a key consideration is how to help ensure you can keep your home for the long run.
As a homebuyer, you probably already know about home insurance, but you may not know that there are optional coverage choices which may help protect your ability to remain in your home in case of a covered health event.
Optional mortgage critical illness and life insurance, like TD Mortgage Protection, can pay down or pay off the remainder of your mortgage balance in case of certain health events, so it may be worth considering.
According to a 2022 TD survey, almost half of Canadian respondents reported their homes as the most important asset they have. And just over 30 per cent of respondents said they would be willing to cash out their investment assets to save their home in the event something unexpected happens, including a covered critical illness.
But what if they didn’t have to worry about that?
Get your applications in: B.C.’s new rural economic diversification program
Rural and remote communities, First Nations and not-for-profit organizations are encouraged to submit applications for B.C.’s new economic diversification program aimed to help strengthen their economies.
The first intake for applications to receive funding from the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP) will close on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023, with a second intake planned for spring 2023.
“People in rural B.C. work tirelessly to build vibrant, inviting communities and we are proud to support them,” said Brenda Bailey, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “Through this new program, we are giving communities the tools they need to diversify and grow their economies, and create more opportunities and jobs for people across B.C.”
The B.C. government has allocated $33 million annually for three years for rural and remote community projects, including grants for capacity building and infrastructure projects. A portion of the funding is dedicated to communities affected by changes in the forest sector.
“People across rural B.C. know how to pick themselves up and come back even stronger when times get tough,” said Roly Russell, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development. “REDIP is one part of our plan to help build more resilient, stable rural economies, and I’m eager to see the projects that communities bring forward to create new opportunities for residents and newcomers alike.”
Building resilient communities is a key action of the StrongerBC Economic Plan, helping move British Columbia forward by tackling challenges and growing the economy.
How to choose an air purifier
(NC) As we navigate this winter’s combination of colds and flu many of us could use cleaner, fresher air to breathe indoors. In fact, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, it’s recommended that room air be changed almost 5 times per hour to enhance ventilation.
One way to improve the air in your home is with good-quality air purifiers. An air purifier works by pulling stale, dirty air into the unit and forcing that air through a filter that captures microscopic pollutants. It then returns cleaner, fresher air back into the room.
When purchasing an air purifier, look for the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) symbol on the purifier’s packaging to know the recommended room size and the clean air delivery rate. The higher the CADR number, the faster it will clean the air in that room.
High efficiency particulate air filters, known as HEPA filters, are consid-
ered the gold standard in air purification, using technology recommended by doctors. An air purifier with a HEPA filter, like Honeywell options, can filter as much as 99.97 per cent of microscopic particles from the air that passes through the filter, as small as 0.3 microns or larger.
Some air purifiers also come with carbon activated pre-filters that help trap larger particles and reduce odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These also help to extend the life of the HEPA filter.
There are many different types and sizes of air purifiers. To get the best results, it’s important to get an air purifier that is the right size for your room. You can find a guide for room sizes at honeywellpluggedin.ca.
Research, innovation make people’s lives better
A new, artificial intelligence-guided point-of-care ultrasound imaging platform is under development at the University of British Columbia (UBC) as one of 18 new research projects funded by the B.C. Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) to improve the lives of British Columbians.
“Bettering the lives of people through research and innovation is an important part of our StrongerBC Economic Plan and a personal passion of mine,” said Brenda Bailey, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “The BCKDF gives students and researchers access to state-of-the-art equipment to develop technologies and innovate in areas
personalized screening to provide affordable, remote, early-stage risk assessment of non-communicable diseases.
This round of funding also supports a UVic project that aims to find new ways to reduce traffic-related air pollution, as well as a project at SFU that uses new virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology to improve service delivery for British Columbians in under-served areas by reducing the need for travel, which then limits greenhouse gas emissions.
“This funding is crucial in the modernization of our universities’ research infrastructure capacity and capabilities, and in advancing the
like cancer treatments and the fight against climate change, helping improve the way we deliver the services that people rely on.”
Through the BCKDF, the Government of B.C. is providing more than $4.3 million for projects at UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, the University of Victoria (UVic), Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Vancouver Island University (VIU) in fields such as health, natural resources and technology.
One of the projects at UBC has the potential to decentralize patient care and work toward developing
research needed in our province,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Supported research projects will make a difference in people’s lives and will help British Columbia become future ready.”
The BCKDF helps grow the economy by improving B.C.’s productivity and competitiveness, which is a key objective of B.C.’s Economic Plan. Other benefits include potential commercialization, spinoffs and patents, improved environmental management, and discoveries that directly affect the health and well-being of British Columbians.

Tips for easy post-celebration clean up
(NC) Hosting family and friends during the holiday season is special, but the clean up before and after a big event isn’t as fun. Use the tips below to make cleaning a little easier.
1. Create a schedule and stick to it
Cleaning an entire house in one go is overwhelming. Try creating a weekly cleaning schedule in which you complete a different task each day. For example, one day can be dedicated to mopping and vacuuming, while another is straightening up and emptying the trash. Breaking down cleaning tasks into smaller daily chores helps give you time back to focus on the party planning.
2. Clean as you go
When hosting a dinner party, load up your dishwasher with as many pots and large kitchen tools as you can and run it while guests are eating. This way, a large number of dishes are already done so your next load will be dinner plates and glassware from your guests. If it’s a party where you’re taking turns un-
Prymr kfrpYNtr
wrapping presents, keep a bag nearby to toss the wrapping paper after every person’s turn.
3. Use quality tools
Half the battle of cleaning your space –whether large or small – is having the right tools to make the job easier. Make sure you have what you need to handle the heavy lifting. Look for an easy to manoeuvre and versatile vacuum that can condense dirt, pet hair and debris, such as the LG CordZero lineup of vacuums with Kompressor technology. Extra sponges, microfibre cloths and extendable dusters go a long way too.

The Patrika Auto Review:
2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid: A New Version of this Excellent CUV. Review
The Kia Sportage has been a stalwart seller for the brand ever since its introduction over two decades ago, And now the fifth generation of this compact crossover is the best so far. With its sleek premium looks and upmarket interior the latest 2023 Sportage is the best looking and well equipped with features and technology as standard that are usually found in far more expensive vehicles.
The 2023 version also scores high with a thoroughly upgraded interior with a cool digital dual-screen cockpit, sleeker dashboard design, and a center console. The top-end 2023 Kia Sportage gets a curved display panel just like in an expensive BMWs that seamlessly merges a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display, covering more than half of the dash. There’s a new touchpad with climate and audio controls beneath the infotainment system. A 360-degree Surround-View Monitor with a 3D view is available for the first time in a Sportage.
The Kia Sportage is available with gasoline, hybrid (HEV) and soon to be released all electric-powered versions. All gas-only models are powered by a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine producing 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of
torque peaking at 4,000 rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic. Power goes to either the front wheels or an active AWD system. AWD is optional in the LX trim and standard in EX and SX-Prestige trims.
The hybrid HEV model as tested uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 44-kW electric motor powered by a 1.49 kWh battery. A six-speed automatic transmission with a rotary-style shifter and paddle shifters is standard in the hybrid variant. Except for the unique 17- or 18-inch wheels and the HEV badging, the Sportage Hybrid variant looks no different from the gasoline- engine Sportage.
The 2023 Kia model lineup starts with the LX FWD, at $28,395 (plus $1,900 destination charge.) and arrives with as standard: Heated front seats and heated side mirrors, 17-inch wheels, LED headlamps, a 60/40 split rear seat, an eight-inch infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, among other features. Forward collision warning, lane keep and follow assist, and a new rear occupant alert system are standard. Other models that progressively add more features include, EX ($35,595), EX Premium ($37,595) and the high-end X-Line trim is priced at
$33,995. The Hybrid model on test is base priced from $40,995. Safety is high across the range.
Interior wise, there is good detailing around the cabin, high quality plastics, glossy black finishes, metal detailing, premium textiles, and material all round, Smart cohesive designs elements add to the upscale ambience. There are cool details such as: multiple USB ports on the backs of the front seats, retracting cup holders and integrated coat hangers in the backs of the front-row headrests. The seat themselves are comfortable and supportive with decent bolstering. Interior room is good with more than adequate room to stretch out. At the rear an adjustable cargo floor can be set to two positions, the lower of which provides a maximum cargo space of 1,121 litres with the rear seats up and 2,098 litres with them folded flat.
On the road, the new 2023 Sportage Hybrid provides a relaxed and stable ride whether on the highway or around town and is agile enough for the cut and thrust of urban driving. The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid powertrain combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (177 hp/195 lb.-ft.) with a 44.2 kW (59.3 hp)/195 lb.-ft. electric motor, and it produces a total power
output of 227 hp. The electric motor obtains juice from a 1.49 kWh battery pack. The transition between the hybrid electric motor and the gasoline engine is seamless, with a smooth unobtrusive switchover. The new Sportage Hybrid features a new ‘E-Handling’ system for improved agility and stability during cornering. The MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear provide tight and controlled handling. Steering is well-calibrated with good feel and direct feedback. The driver can select from four drive modes: Eco, Sport, Smart, and Snow (AWD-only).
In town and the highway, the Sportage feels firmly planted and responsive. Few negatives here, its not the sportiest driving SUV, but is a competent, safe, and easy to drive SUV. The hybrid offers an excellent combined 6.2 L/100 km in combined driving and a class-leading 2,000 lb towing capacity.
To sum up, the 2023 Kia Sportage HEV offers great fuel economy, a roomy upscale cabin, desirable features, and plenty of curb appeal. Add to this Kia’s excellent warranty and the very good as standard equipment list and it is very tempting. Kia is now one of the most sought-after brands and has grown in estimation by consumers so order quickly as demand will be high!
2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid: priced from $40,995 plus destination.
