The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Volvo XC40 B5 AWD Ultimate: The Swede to beat!

For 2023, Volvo’s premium XC40 remains a compact SUV that is both stylish and practical. It looks great with Volvo’s corporate grille up front and the unique T-shape headlights while the side profile is smart and effortless looking. It is the ideal sized SUV for most people and arrives beautifully packaged. The XC40 is available with variety of powertrains available including an all-electric model, known as the XC40 Recharge. The gasoline model has either the B4 2L gas engine with 194hp or the upgraded B5 247-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit with a 48VOLT integrated starter/ generator touted by Volvo as more powerful than any of its segment competitors. The transmission is an eight-speed Geartronic automatic, The 2023 model year received a few very understated styling updates to the front bumper and headlights.

A well-designed dash is the norm with a plethora of digital displays abound, including the 12.3-inch gauge cluster screen and a 9.0-inch touchscreen in the center of the dash that is the mother ship control unit for almost all the infotainment functions. The interior gest top marks its spacious, neat, and thoughtfully designed Scandinavian ambience and high-quality materials such as open-pore wood, metal trim, and sturdy attractively grained plastics.

On the road, with 258lb-ft of torque the Volvo has pace and the 8-speed Geartronic automatic transmission makes a good team. There is sprightly acceleration and a smooth, comfortable ride. The eight-speed automatic transmission is responsive and performs up and downshifts with cohesiveness, providing more power for passing or merging as needed.

The 48V integrated starter/generator provides an exceptionally smooth auto start/stop system. The XC40 comes standard with multiple drive modes, including Eco, Comfort, Off-Road, Dynamic, and Individual (a customizable setting for steering and powertrain response). Each mode adjusts various engine, transmission, and chassis, Generally there are no issues on road, with the decent enough acceleration, supple ride quality, and good cornering. The B5 powertrain fuel economy is rated for 10.2 L/100km in a city and 7.9 L/100km ) on a highway.

Downsides are few, some of the onscreen buttons are too small, and nontechies may groan at the fact there are few hard buttons to control functions and you have to use the touchscreen.

Overall, the XC40 is highly recommended and good to see a premium Volvo SUV within the reach of most buyers. It is indeed a more discerning alternative to the usual German competition.
