The Patrika Auto Review: 2023

Ford Ranger SuperCrew XLT-

Great for Work and Play!

The 2032 Ford Ranger is the Blue Ovals compact pickup truck, a good counterpart to the hybrid Maverick model and the mighty Ford F-150. Not many changes for 2023. The truck still has the handsome, almost graceful lines for a well-integrated look. Short overhangs, a high beltline, steeply raked cabin windshield, trapezoid black honeycomb grill, and big fenders complete a contemporary visage. The engine powering the Ranger is the second-generation Ford 2.3L twin scroll turbocharged Ecoboost fourcylinder, making 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. It is mated to a tenspeed automatic.—there is no manual transmission option. The Ranger can carry up to 1,650 lb of cargo with the short bed Crew Cab 4 x 4 configuration, and 1,560 lbs for the SuperCrew. All Ranger models have a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 lbs, (When properly equipped with tow package) which Ford says is best-in-class.

All Rangers in Canada are 4×4 equipped. The mid-range XLT comes in a Super Cab version at $38,290, or SuperCrew at $40,840. The ;top-line Lariat is available in Crew cab format only. Options and stand-alone extras will increase the price substantially. Our tester XLT model was optioned with the FX4 Package offering beefier tires, front tow hooks, a steel skid plate, special suspension with offroad-capable dampers, an electronically locking rear differential, and an additional off-road screen in the main instrument cluster. The as tested Supercrew XLT featured five roomy seats, and four conventionally opening doors.

fortable leather seats, contrasting orange trim stitching and the high spec optional equipment list. Also included was the technology package, FX4 Offroad package, Chrome appearance package, sprayed in bedliner, running boards, auto stop start feature, 18-inch wheels and trailer tow package. Total options came to a hefty $10,025.

The Ranger’s cabin design is neat and well organized. Kudos to Ford for ensuring there are proper button or knobs for major functions as well as a touchscreen. The dash is uncluttered with nice big dials for stereo volume and tuning. The infotainment system is powered by the latest version of Ford’s excellent SYNC3 system with an 8.0inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is also included. There is also dual-zone climate control and heated front seats, but a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats are not available, even as options. The Rangers front seats are incredibly supportive and comfortable and have eight-way power with lumbar support on the Lariat model. The rear seats can fold up for some extra cargo space. Storage space up front is good, with

B.C. helps farmers prepare for extreme weather

Farmers and ranchers are being supported with a new round of funding to help strengthen their resilience to wildfires, flooding and extreme heat, and mitigate future climate impacts.

“Climate change and extreme weather pose an array of challenges for people throughout British Columbia, including our farmers, ranchers and food producers,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “It is important that we support them with programs like this so they can be more resilient to the impacts of climate change and better protect their livelihoods, while ensuring we have a stable, sustainable food supply.”

The Extreme Weather Preparedness for Agriculture program was launched as a pilot last summer and aims to build a more resilient and sustainable agriculture and food sector by helping prepare for future climate events, such as wildfires, flooding and heatwaves.

In the first year of the program, more than $1.4 million supported 129 projects in the poultry, dairy, beef, tree fruit and berry sectors. One of the primary projects funded was improving barn cooling systems to help keep poultry and cattle safe in the event of extreme heat.

“The welfare of our animals is the number 1 concern for B.C. farmers when we’re faced with extreme weather,” said Mark Siemens, farmer

and president, BC Egg Producers Association. “This program supports important projects like improved cooling systems and shade trees that provide a safer space for animals. The poultry sector was hit hard during the 2021 heat dome and flood as our farms had never been tested through these circumstances, and this funding will ensure we’re able to better prepare for and mitigate future extreme weather events.”

For 2023, the program is supporting projects with up to $2.5 million. It is expanding its criteria to include B.C.-licensed apiculture (beekeeping) and aquaculture producers, as well as federally licensed cannabis and hemp producers.

“More than ever, farmers need to be equipped to deal with the kind of extreme weather events that have devastated agricultural production in several regions of the province in recent years,” said Danielle Synotte, executive director, BC Agriculture Council. “BC Agriculture Council has advocated for more support for industry in this area and is pleased to see this funding is already making a difference for the agriculture sector.”

The program is part of B.C.’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, the Province’s plan to help people, communities and businesses work together to be better prepared for the impacts of climate change.

There will be a lot to think about and to perhaps communicate over to the end of June. Now would be a good time to investigate your facts if there are details you are not entirely sure about. Amongst all of this can be many distractions of which some will be of an enjoyment nature. It is possible that important things can wait a bit.

Something you are determined to do in your own way can progress well if you have taken the time to get a good foundation in place. The cost could play a role in cutting back in certain areas, making you realise that perhaps you were being too ambitious. Even so, the outcome can be well balanced and free you up in some way.

Mercury, your ruling planet is now in your sign where it will remain until 27th June. This should pick things up somewhat, though you will be required to take a practical approach right now, especially when it comes to obligations. If they are necessary, it will be difficult to escape. Enjoy spending some time to yourself.

Find some quiet thinking time to yourself to give serious consideration to what is or is not worth pursuing in the future. Part of this is what will produce the best outcome when it comes to finances. It might be time to trim things down so they will be more manageable rather than stretching yourself to the limit. Think about it.

Remain focussed on your own priorities to late June, though you can certainly be challenged by the expectations of somebody else. Your own obligations can increase. You can maintain a good balance if you work on keeping this under control if you do not attempt to spread yourself in too many different directions.

The obligations you need to deal with on a daily basis may be more of a decider, to late June, when it comes to decisions that would be wise to make in the future. You need to act on your own priorities rather than being overly generous when it comes to what others seem to need from you. They will have to learn to manage themselves.

Decisions about the pressure to take on certain commitments might need to be made by late June. More important in your long-term considerations can be the desire to implement time for relaxation and pleasure for yourself rather than responding to what someone else thinks might be a better use of your time.

Activity with others will step up to late June. There can be some very interesting conversations that will make you think seriously about the best type of structure to put in place that would be practical and realistic. You might like to think more in terms of being carefree but that will come with a lot more work than you realise.

It can be difficult to know what somebody else is really thinking to late June. It might put a damper on things for you, but you should get on and not worry about it. Interaction with others, particularly in a work sense, can bring some recognition and benefits your way. You may realise you are appreciated more than you thought.

If you remain focussed mentally, you can be very successful in catching up with work that needs doing up to late June. You might also realise that leaving things until later is not the best solution – it only builds up. There can be plenty of opportunity for enjoyment but will this suit somebody else more than you?

Somebody else can encourage you, to late June, to get into the habit of focussing on what will give you pleasure in life. Finances might bother you but there are things you can do that will not cost a fortune. The main thing is to feel you have a sense of independence, if only with something small. It can make life feel worthwhile.

You could see the practical benefits in putting your mind to getting something better organised by late June. It can result in a greater sense of stability. Once you feel more settled on a daily basis you will find life seems to balance itself out a little bit more. You might still get annoyed at things that put sudden demands on you.

decent sized door pockets and cubby holes. The fit, finish, and comfort in the interior is far better and luxurious than the Japanese competition in this sector- less utilitarian with a more car-like ambience. So, well done on that Ford!

On the road, the Rangers 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder engine offers good acceleration and cruising speed. The torque comes on strong in the fully useable mid range. Meanwhile, the manoeuvrable size, and impressive turning circle make it easy to drive. The steering is light and responsive. In typical pickup truck fashion, the Ranger is bouncy and jittery over bumps if unloaded but it is a smooth ride on most surfaces and with a load and occupants. Note, the 4×4 system is part-time and for less traction situations. Terrain Management, operated by a button on the console, optimizes performance in mud, snow, sand, and other conditions The Terrain Management system also features Ford’s low speed forward crawl control system that can operate up to 11 km/h. Fuel economy is rated at 12.3 l/100km city and 9.7 city with 11.1 L/100 km

combined rating (Natural Resources Canada). Downsides are few, no heated steering wheel, or heated rear seats and the climate control buttons are small and difficult to see.

I was impressed that although you sit high, the narrower cab and smaller size means it is not a chore to park the Ranger like a full- size truck. Overall, the new Ford Ranger is very well executed. Ford expect customers who had a Ranger in the past to once more consider the advantages of a smaller fuel-efficient truck that will fit in a townhouse or condominium parking space. The Rangers handy 7,500 lb of towing capacity (when equipped with its trailer brake controller and towing package) means it is the ultimate versatile family or work and play truck. Highly recommended.

2023 Ford Ranger Base priced from: $40,840 - $43,340 plus options destination and taxes. Supercrew XLT Model as tested with options :$50,865 plus fees amd destination.

The best father-daughter activities

(NC) Father’s Day is coming up, and there is no better time to nourish your special bond. If you are looking for fun ways to spend the holiday with your daughter, check out this list of sure-to-be-favourite activities:

Gardening. You can spend a nice summer morning out in the yard. Gardening is hard work that requires a lot of knowledge, but it is also fun. You can teach your daughter about different types of plants and how best to take care of them.

Biking. This is one of the best sports to do with someone else, because you can still talk while cycling. Plus, there are so many beautiful places you can bike to, making it fun to exercise and relax together.

Cooking. If you are planning on having a Father’s Day meal, why not prepare the food together? Cooking is not only an essential life skill, it is good fun if done right. Who knows, you might even spark your daughter’s

interest in the chemistry involved with cooking.

Fathers have the special ability to teach girls that they are just as good as boys are, and that they can be anything they want. If you are a dad who believes girls deserve an equal chance, consider donating to an organization like Beautiful World Canada, which provides comprehensive higher education scholarships to girls in sub-Saharan Africa.

Learn more about how you can help girls around the world achieve their dreams at beautifulworldcanada.org.

5 easy habits to help keep your gums healthy

(NC) Are you concerned about seeing blood on your brush or in the sink when brushing your teeth? Bleeding gums are one of the earliest signs of gum disease that affects 65 per cent of Canadians. The good news is that you can help prevent and even reverse early stages of gum disease, if caught early.

Gum health is part of your overall wellness. If you notice symptoms like swollen, red or bleeding gums, receding gums, bad breath, pus coming from your gums, changes to the fit of your bite or dentures, or loose teeth, you may have gum disease.

Keeping your gums in check can help you avoid gum disease symptoms and you can do so by doing the following:

Brush daily and add a specialized gum care toothpaste which provides long-lasting antibacterial activity.

Also add an antiseptic mouthwash to help kill bacteria - rinse your mouth after brushing.

Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients for your immune system.

Visit your dentist two times per year. Avoid/manage stress - it can increase inflammation in your body and can also weaken your immune system. This can cause plaque bacteria to wreak havoc on your gums.

Don’t let bleeding gums go untreated – take action to help improve your gum health with an oral care product specially developed for you, like Colgate PerioGardSF, a daily toothpaste clinically proven for healthier gums. Pair this with a toothbrush specifically designed for gum care, such as the Colgate PerioGard. And don’t forget to see your dentist at least two times per year. Healthier gums mean a healthier you.

New survey will help fill gaps in government services

Everyone living in B.C. is encouraged to take the BC Demographic Survey to help identify systemic racism in government services.

The survey is online and available in 15 languages at: https://antiracism. gov.bc.ca/bcdemographicsurvey

People without access to a computer or smartphone can take the survey by calling toll-free: 1 833 376-2452

“We have heard from many Indigenous Peoples and racialized groups that they are being left behind because government services weren’t designed with them in mind, which is why we are continuing the work to create a more equitable province,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Citizens’ Services. “The BC Demographic Survey is our next step in confronting systemic biases and advancing racial equity in B.C. If you’re a B.C. resident, I invite you to participate in the survey to help us build a province that works for everyone.”

The information collected through the BC Demographic Survey will help the B.C. government deliver stronger, more accessible, and more inclusive programs and services for everyone. The survey was created through engagement with Indigenous, Black and other racialized communities. It includes questions related to race, ethnicity, ancestry and other areas of identity.

“Everyone deserves equitable access to the supports they need,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “We need to understand how systemic racism shows up in government services through data collection. The BC Demographic Survey will help us identify data gaps so that we can improve access to government programs and services for everyone.”

The BC Demographic Survey is being conducted by BC Stats, the Province’s trusted source of statistics about B.C.’s people and economy. Personal identifiers will be removed

when survey responses are combined with information about government programs and services.

This will enable anti-racism research on the priorities brought forward by Indigenous Peoples and the AntiRacism Data Committee. Those research priorities were released May 29, 2023.

“We all need fair and impartial opportunities to thrive,” said Mable Elmore, Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives. “But many people experience obstacles that make getting ahead more challenging. By participating in the BC Demographic Survey, we can better understand where people are experiencing barriers when accessing public services so we can address them and build a better B.C. for everyone.”

While the survey is voluntary, everyone, regardless of ethnicity, is encouraged to take it. The more people who complete the survey, the better and

more accurate the data to identify, then eliminate, systemic racism in B.C. government services.

The Province has developed a digitalawareness campaign that alters the B.C. logo to show how gaps in services can be filled by participating in the survey.

Ongoing community involvement is at the core of the Anti-Racism Data Act. The Province is also providing grants to community organizations to raise awareness of the survey within their networks. Interested community organizations can email: arda.engagement@gov.bc.ca

The survey is open until Sept. 29, 2023, and is part of the Province’s cross-government work to collaborate with Indigenous Peoples and racialized communities to dismantle systemic racism and build a better, more inclusive province.

Archway Golf Tournament Hopes for Biggest Year To Date

The Archway Community Services Charity Golf Tournament is returning for its 6th year on June 20th and organizers hope it’s the most successful tournament to date.

“Our tournament has been steadily growing and with the increased number of players, sponsors and online options, we hope to break our $75,000 fundraising record from last year,” said Steve Carlton, Archway’s Board President and chair of the tournament organizing committee.

“The need in our community keeps increasing and the funds raised help keep critical programs operating.”

One program that benefits from the proceeds is In It Together, a gang prevention program whose government funding has ended and is in danger of closing.

“With the community’s support, we hope to keep the doors open so we can support at-risk youth and their families,” said Carlton. “Support -

ing prevention and intervention programs like this and others at Archway is an investment into the wellbeing of our community.”

The tournament also supports Archway programs such as Meals on Wheels for seniors, support for new parents and practical items like car seats for newcomers.

Mike Gibson, a realtor with Sutton Group WestCoast Realty shared why they are returning as the title sponsor for the third year. “Abbotsford is where we work. It is where we live. Being local Realtors, and being out in the community every day, you get to see firsthand, the needs of the community. Archway gives our office an avenue to put our resources to work to help reach those that need it most.”

While the Archway Charity Golf Tournament is sold out with a record 144 golfers, the accompanying 50/50 online raffle and online auction are open to the public.

The 50/50 raffle is a new component of the tournament and participants have the opportunity to win up to $10,000 if all tickets are sold.

Items up for auction include an Abbotsford Canucks limited edition Diwali jersey autographed by Arshdeep Bains, gift baskets, farm fresh blueberries, vintage hockey cards plus much more. For the second year, the University of the Fraser Valley has donated a semester’s tuition with

up to 15 credits valued at more than $2,400.

Raffle tickets can be found at Archway.ca/Raffle and the auction can be found at Givergy.ca/ArchwayGolf2023. Both will close after the tournament on June 20th at 7:00pm. The event, presented by Sutton Group WestCoast Realty and supported by the Abbotsford Canucks, will take place at the Ledgeview Golf and Country Club.
