Local Business Joins in Rotary Beautification Project For over 20 years the AbbotsfordSumas Rotary Club has looked after the upkeep of the Abbotsford sign on the south side of Highway 1 at Sumas Way. The Rotary club had tended to the weeding, pruning, cleaning and mowing of the area bordering the sign. In the past, volunteers have even repainted the sign several times. This year a local business stepped forward to assist the Rotary club in their efforts. As part of their “Communities in Full Colour” program, Otter Co-op has donated the paint needed to refresh the sign. Co-op’s Social Responsibility Program is part of their ongoing commitment to give back, lend a hand and do what they can to support the causes that matter most to the community. Co-op staff even joined the Rotarians in the work crew to help paint. Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as

Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. Clubs are non-political, non-religious and open to all cultures, races and creeds. As signified by the motto Service above Self, Rotary’s main objective is Service; in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world.

Tips for navigating your way through flu season (NC) With the beginning of flu season near, many of us are already practicing behaviours that will help prevent us from getting sick. If you’re washing your hands, avoiding touching your face and wearing a mask, you might start to wonder: why worry about the flu this year? But the truth is that it is more important than ever to be proactive about the flu this year to help keep emergency rooms free and our immune systems strong.

“As many of us learned at the beginning of allergy season, it’s very uncomfortable to be the one sneezing or coughing in public in this current climate,” adds Victor Wong, pharmacist at Shoppers Drug Mart. The flu can come out of nowhere and hit hard, bringing with it high fever, coughing, muscle aches, headaches, chills and fatigue lasting anywhere between a few days and a few weeks. Fortunately, by following a few simple rules of illness etiquette we can easily stem the flu virus’ spread and avoid putting other families at risk. Stay home when feeling unwell. “While many of us may have sent our kids to school or daycare sick, or even gone to work when we were feeling under the weather, that is no

longer an option,” says Wong. “The flu spreads easily and can have especially serious repercussions in families with young or older family members, so be courteous and keep you and your germs at home.” Te a c h k i d s t h e basics. Using tissues for runny noses, coughing into sleeves and hand washing are all things children can easily do to halt the spread of germs. Because the flu is contracted through mucous membranes, reminding kids to keep their fingers away from their mouths, noses and eyes can also be helpful. “Make it fun and you’ll make it a routine,” suggests Wong. “Teaching vampire coughs or giving your kids a 20-second hand-washing song or

countdown are great ways to subtly share good hygiene practices.” Get vaccinated. “Vaccination is part of a comprehensive flu prevention plan and one of the best things you can do protect your family and others,” advises Wong. “Spending just a few minutes getting your flu shot at your local pharmacy could save you and your kids weeks of misery. It might even save someone else’s life.” PAGE 3

“BRIDGING COMMUNITIES”

From Balwant Sanghera’s Desk: My Journey to Canada

t has been more than fifty-four years when I set foot in Winnipeg, Canada in the midst of a very cold winter in the last week of January, 1966. On my way to Canada (from my hometown Pharwala in Jalandhar District) I had spent a week in England visiting my friends and relatives there. The flight on BOAC (which later changed its name to British Airways) from New Delhi to London was quite enjoyable and a pleasant one. After staying in England for a week or so, I flew from London to Prestwick on Air Canada and then on to Winnipeg for immigration and customs. It was the middle of winter. From Winnipeg I flew to Vancouver to join my brother, Gurbux Singh Sanghera and family. When I look back to those times and the current situation in Canada, I am amazed at the changes that have taken place both in Canada and in the South Asian community. It is a very different Can-

ada than the one there was more than fifty years ago. Same is the case for our community. Some of my friends have urged me to share my experience and perspective with the readers in this and some of the articles that will follow this one.

Before coming to Canada, I had completed my B.Sc. degree from Punjab University. Soon after my arrival in Vancouver, my brother suggested to me that I should apply for admission to the newly opened Simon Fraser University to pursue a career in teaching as this was the profession I intended to follow in Canada. This brand new university on Burnaby Mountain had just opened its doors a few months ago in September, 1965. The university’s architecture by prominent architect Arthur Erickson was just amazing. My academic session was to begin in September, 1966. Thus, I had a few months to

All three of them, despite their limitations have contributed a lot to making this province what it is to-day. Regardless of their political affiliation, all of them have left an indelible mark in BC. Their legacies like the highway networks, infrastructure, ICBC, ALR; Expo etc. were the turning points in this province. Their vision and foresight along with the natural beauty of BC have made Metro Vancouver in particular and British Columbia in general as one of the most attractive places in the world for visitors, immigrants and The lumber industry in BC has played investors alike. a very important role in the growth and development of this province. In the 1960s and 1970s it was the backbone of BC with thousands of people working in various saw mills and related industries all over the province. A lot of small towns were totally dependent on this industry. Similarly, International Woodworkers of America (IWA) was one of the most powerful unions in BC at that time. As a matter of fact, the lumber industry has been a boon for our community. It has provided good paying steady jobs to IndoCanadians in general and Punjabis in particular Balwant Sanghera, O.B.C., MEd ’83 since their arrival in Canada in late Backgrounder 1880s and early 1900s. adapt myself to the new environment. A relative of mine was working in a saw mill (Selkirk Spruce Mills) in Donald, BC, about 15 kilometers west of Golden right on Trans-Canada Highway about 800 kilometers east of Vancouver. He asked me join him and work at that mill till the session started at SFU in September. Incidentally, it has been reported that Golden was the home of the first Gurdwara in Canada built by South Asians working in a saw mill there. That mill burnt down in 1927 and the workers moved to other places including Metro Vancouver. It was a great learning experience for me to work in the saw mill in Donald prior to attending SFU.

As a keen observer of politics, soon after my arrival here, I found political developments and interactions here to be very different, fascinating, interesting and entertaining. For example, by just looking at three of our premiers PAGE 6

Nivetha on talent exchange between film industries

South star Nivetha Thomas is happy with the talent exchange happening within film industries in the country.Several actors from film industries down South including Prabhas, Vijay Deverakonda, Dhanush, Sudheer Babu have forayed Bollywood lately, or are set to do so, even as a huge list of Bollywood stars, including Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan among many others have worked in the south Indian film industries.Nivetha she welcomes such talent exchange. "It is cultural integration. I welcome it with open arms. At the end of the day when we are talking about it from the broader front. It is great to have people from across regions working together," she said. The actress added: "It is like an exchange of different ideologies, practices and methods because when I was for the first time with a Bombay team, I got to learn a lot of stuff I didn't know."Nivetha agrees that there is a lot of "give and take" but as long it is healthy, it is amazing."At the end of the day you can't set a formula to this. Just because you want to work with different people you can't have them there. You only have to do what the film requires and if that character requires somebody who will do justice, forget the region. Take the actor who does justice to the role," she said.

Need to create gender neutral environment at home : Pankaj Tripathi Acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi says, be it son or daughter, parents should allow their children to be independent."Centuries of conditioning and gender blocks can be defeated only if we consciously create a neutral environment at home. Be it for your son or daughter, I often tell parents to allow their children to be independent," said Tripathi. He added that if parents instill confidence in children to be their own decision makers, they will be responsible."They should take charge of their lives and even as we are available to guide them at every step, we shouldn't overshadow their life with the baggage of our lived experiences and opinions. If we instill the confidence in children to be their own decision makers, they'll be

They will always criticize you, speak badly of you : Giorgia Andriani Over the last few months, the one thing we have missed is Yay or Nays! For all those who know us, you know how big of a fan we are of celebrity style and the pandemic put a pause to the whole idea of Bollywood fashion. While we did have quite a lot of looks to fall back to, we do love the fact that things are slowly getting back to normal and this time we have Giorgia Andriani’s latest look to keep us company! Nothing screams 'statement' like Black especially when you know all the A to Z of styling. G i o r g i a Recently shared some of her pictures from her photoshoot and captioned, "They will always

criticize you, speak badly of you, it'll be hard to meet someone who will like you as you are, so live, do what your hear tells you to do ... Life is like a play that does not allow testing. far more responsible," she said. The actor is winning applause for his role in the recently released "Gunjan Saxena: T h e Kargil Girl". He played Anuj Saxena, father of the protagonist."As a parent, I tell my daughter that my wife and I are with her but eventually it's her life and she has to become her own person. Our guidance and support is always there but the choices have to be hers, the victories are hers and the mistakes are hers too," said Tripathi

Missed my makeup man : Rakul Preet Singh Five months after the last leg of their film was expected to go on floors, the unit of Rakul Preet Singh and Arjun Kapoor's upcoming love saga resumed shooting in Film City. Filming for Kaashvie Nair's untitled directorial debut, a cross-border love story set amid the Indian Independence, is taking place with caution.

Life is all about creating wonderful memories : Rajkummar Rao

Actor Rajkummar Rao says life is all about creating memories. He took to Instagram, where he shared two pictures. In the first image, he is seen enjoying himself in the swimming pool. The second picture has the actor posing with his actress girlfriend Patralekhaa and some friends. As the caption, Rajkummar wrote: "Life is all about creating wonderful memories."Speaking about his work, the actor will be seen sharing screen space with Priyanka Chopra Jonas in an OTT adaptation of the Man Booker Prize winning novel "The White Tiger". He will also be seen opposite Nushrratt Bharuccha in Hansal Mehta's comedy drama "Chhalaang". He is also a part of "Ludo", "Roohi Afzana" a n d "Badhaai Do".

"When we wrapped up the previous schedule, no one could have imagined that our next leg would see such drastic changes. When I stepped on the set, it looked like I was entering another world. There are sanitiser showers, unit members don PPE kits, and constant temperature checks are conducted for cast and crew members. This is the new normal," says Singh.Despite the luxuries afforded to actors on set, Singh admits that she hasn't seen a vanity van being maintained as well as it has been, this time around. "Measures to maintain cleanliness are being taken, and [the set is] frequently sanitised. I was glad to be back at work. All these months, I had been doing my own make-up. When I saw my make-up artiste do a fine job [with me], I turned around and told him that I missed him." Amid all the modifications, Singh says she found comfort in the camaraderie she shares with her co-artistes, John Abraham and producer Nikkhil Advani. "John makes us laugh all the time. Kaashvie and he have a Tom-andJerry vibe between them," says Singh, who has also begun work on Krish's Telugu film in Hyderabad.

You can have a clearer idea of the results or success that is possible with something you could have started out with 2 years ago. Anything that has gone through hold ups since late May can now move forward to early August. If you feel there are obligations that need to be dropped now is the time to take definite action.

There could be some frustration when it comes to money matters, especially if a past situation wasn’t properly dealt with. The need to communicate or do a lot of running around can step up from now to early August. Anything that has been held up or has not been clear can move forward. Avoid taking on too much though.

Attempting to enjoy yourself socially could be disrupted by the expectations of somebody else or restricted because of obligations connected to the needs of somebody else. A sense of being able to move forward when it comes to finances can result in less of a worry from now to early August. Avoid impulsive spending.

You can either move forward with personal decisions from now to early August or anything you have been attempting to make a decision on can become apparent. Something that requires other people to be involved could become clearer. What you would like from the situation in the long term could fall into place easily.

Health matters, not necessarily your own, could interfere with social plans that have already been put in place. You could be quite happy to isolate yourself and get on with work that has been put to one side for too long. There is much you can accomplish. Things will begin to go your way more from late July to early August.

Any situation involving you with a group of people that has experienced hold ups could now move forward. This week could be the beginning of a lot activity with other people. Don’t feel you need to be involved just because it is expected of you, especially if this will cause difficulty with responsibilities you must see to.

Having to move back to a situation you thought you had moved on from can cause some aggravation. It may seem that you get little choice right now. All you can do is move forward with decisions from now to early August that are connected to the responsibilities you are happy to accept. See what pans out by the end of the year.

A way forward when it comes to the future may become clearer from now to early August though it may be necessary to gather more information. This could be generated because of somebody else doubting your ideas. In the end though the detail and work involved will be up to you so you need to decide if you want this.

You need to be careful when it comes to your finances and anything expected or recommended through other people. If you feel you are being pushed into something you don’t want, especially if it will cost you money, don’t be afraid to put a hold on it. This may not be the best time to splurge out on a holiday either.

You can be very busy with other people. If they have been holding back when it comes to making a final decision on something, they will move forward from now to early August. If there is something you want to have done at home that requires other people to get involved now would be the time to move forward on that.

This is a good time to get moving when it comes to get on with the job of getting rid of things you have been thinking about for some time especially if this will make things easier for you on a daily basis. You could also make a decision to develop your fitness level or pay better attention to improving your eating habits.

The opportunity to involve yourself in things you enjoy could present itself perhaps in an area you had given up on or didn’t think would go ahead. This could bring you into contact with people you have not seen in a while or that have some sort of connection to situations you have been involved with in the past. Much to enjoy.

Mental-health supports for postsecondary students

A

s post-secondary students hit the books this fall, the Here2Talk mental-health counselling and referral service is available 24/7 to provide support to students who need it. “We know that students beginning or returning to their post-secondary studies this fall may be feeling apprehensive about many things – including all the normal concerns like course work, relationships, employment on top of navigating the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “I want anyone who feels alone or isolated or overwhelmed to know that it is OK to not be OK and that there is help for you when you need it, 24/7.” The free mental-health counselling and referral service launched in April 2020. It provides 24/7 mental-health services for all B.C. post-secondary students regardless of where they are studying, be it from their homes or face to face in classrooms. Students can access chat sessions with a trained counsellor at here2talk. ca or by downloading the Here2Talk app. Students can also speak to a counsellor by phone (toll free 1 877 857-3397 or direct 604 642-5212). Students calling from outside Canada can dial +1 604 642-5212 (international calling charges may apply).

M.P. BRAD VIS NAMED CONSERVATIVE SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOUSING

B

rad Vis, M.P., Mission–Matsqui–Fraser Canyon, was appointed the Conservative Shadow Minister for Housing by the Hon. Erin O’Toole, P.C., M.P., Leader of the Official Opposition. A complete break-down of the new Shadow Cabinet for the Conservative Party of Canada is found here. MP Vis has issued the following statement: “I am honoured to be named to Mr. O'Toole’s Shadow Cabinet and am excited to continue working with my colleagues in this new capacity as part of our Conservative government-inwaiting. We have a strong, capable team that is ready for the potential of a fall federal election. The Trudeau Liberal government is failing to deliver on numerous issues and sadly, housing is no exception. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporations’ own data shows that

over the past two years, only 0.5 per cent of $1.46 billion allocated through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund has gone to affordable housing projects in B.C. Accessible, targeted federal programs with builtin regional equity provisions are clearly needed. Affordable, appropriate housing remains a challenge for far too many. Canadians should have a reasonable opportunity to own their own home, and everyone should have access to safe and affordable housing. I look forward to providing solutions and driving policy change to ensure this is the reality for Millennials, Gen Z, and future generations of aspiring homeowners.”
