Good Luck, Teams!
‘We have to get the best 11 guys on the field’ By Michael Waterloo Of The Spirit
2013 Fall Sports, The Punxsutawney Spirit & Jefferson County Neighbors, August 2013 - 7
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The title of this article is a phrase that Punxsutawney Head Football Coach Alan Nichol uttered at least seven times during the season preview interview. As cliche as it sounds, Nichol believes it, and will live by those words throughout the upcoming football season. The 2013 Punxsutawney Area High School team is fresh off a 5-5 season, which was good enough to qualify them for the playoffs. The Chucks are returning some big playmakers, but for the first time in Nichol’s tenure, the team’s quarterback situation is up in the air. During an interview at the start of camp, Nichol said that Dakota Thomas, Matt Burkett and Ryan Jones will all be competing for the starting quarterback position. While he wouldn’t get into details, Nichol did hint that there’s a possibility of having the quarterbacks rotate in-and-out throughout the course of the season and each game. “That certainly could develop, where they have their separate set of plays. Burkett and Thomas both have styles that are somewhat dissimilar,” Nichol said. “We could have a package for Burkett and then have a package for Thomas.” It’s whichever one will result in having the best 11 guys on the field. Whichever quarterback it is, he will have big shoes to fill. After all, they are following up two successful quarterbacks in Garrett Zimmerman and Logan Weaver. “They’re making the adjustment. Garrett Zimmerman was our quarterback the past two years. He’s 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, and was a downfield type of guy,” Nichol explained. “Logan Weaver — who is at Indiana University of Pennsylvania now — was one of the best quarterbacks we’ve ever had here. He was also a downfield guy. Our guys now are drop back guys. They did a good job of finding the open man during the scrimmages. It’s working itself out.” The quarterback situation is going to be one of the storylines to keep an eye on during the course of the season. With short passes, Nichol is setting either Thomas, Burkett or Jones up for success. It also doesn’t hurt that the offense is loaded with threats all over. Clayton Dale and Dakotah
Byers — both All-Conference slot backs — return for their senior and junior seasons respectively. Byers hauled in 10 receptions for 193 yards and three scores last season. Dale led the team in receptions (24) and yards (329) and tied for the lead in touchdowns with four. As you would expect with their accolades, Nichol expects a lot from them. “They worked hard over the summer,” Nichol said. “We have a nice solid group of guys that worked real hard in the offseason that know what’s going on.” Sure, Dale and Byers both know what’s going on in general, but that’s with the proven quarterback that Zimmerman was. With a young team, will Nichol think about changing his offensive philosophy? “We aren’t changing the whole offensive game plan. I’ve played a lot of football and have coached a lot of football,” Nichol explained. “I’ve seen things that work. Whenever you’re good at, something that works, that’s what we’re going to run, you know?” I know, coach. And the players do too. What this team is good at is running the ball. The best comparison that can be made is Doug Marrone. Marrone, now the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, ran the ball as much as he possibly could last season as the head coach of Syracuse University. “I’m going to run the football. I’m going to find ways to run the football with a bunch of different formations. Whatever we have to do. But, we like to use our run to set up the pass,” Nichol said. “I think I’d like to be 50-50, but I’ve been 60-40 running the ball.” And not to single any one player out, but when you have a weapon like Christian Falgout coming out of the backfield, you have to utilize him. Last season, Falgout carried the rock 172 times for 742 yards. On the ground, Falgout had nine touchdowns. Not bad numbers, right? Did I mention he was splitting carries with Jamie Bush? Marrone said he wants to run C.J. Spiller “until he throws up.” While I wouldn’t go that far with Falgout, don’t be surprised to see him be utilized as much as possible. “Christian comes back with a lot of carries and experience. He’s a team leader,” Nichol said. “He worked extremely hard in the offseason so that
he could carry the load at any given time. He really worked on his speed, and he’s just really looking forward to having a good year.” Falgout will be carrying the bulk of the load, but Perry Arrington’s scat-back ability, and Travis Perry’s downhill style will complement Falgout and the Chucks’ offense as well. To be a running back at any level of competition, you need to be able to pass-block. Picking up the blitz is an overlooked technique in football. Nichol expects all of his backs to be able to do this, and if they can’t, another man will be given the chance. It is, after all, all about putting the best 11 guys on the field. Ten of those 11 guys could come on the offensive line. No, not at one time. That is, unless Nichol created some kind of new formation. But with a young line, Nichol expects to see some guys rotate in-and-out. To drop a baseball term, you’ll see some platoon action going on. Luke Shiock will anchor the line at left guard, but after that, it gets fuzzy. Jonathan Voss, Jacob Coalmer and Kammeron Rummell will all look to get time being the quarterback’s best friend at left tackle. Ethan Ambler and Blake Bizousky are taking reps in practice at center. Jacob Gotwald is back after a year of being a manager to try to solidify the right guard position. Meanwhile, Brandon Douthit, Keegan Fischer and Dalton Maines are working in at right tackle. Despite the youth, Nichol is optimistic about his frontfive. “We’re looking pretty young up front at this point. But I like the fact that we have two full groups of guys that either have a lot of experience at the junior varsity level or have worked hard over the summer,” Nichol said. “We have about 10 guys that we are really counting on at those positions. They’re competing to get the best five guys on the field.” The team will put up points. Even with the quarterback situation, Nichol said the team isn’t lacking anywhere. But will they be able to stop the opposition? Nichol brings back his 4-25 defensive scheme. After he broke down the x’s and o’s of it for about 15 minutes, it seems to be the perfect fit. Of course,
he’s had great success with it in the past at Punxsutawney. “We’ve kind of developed into a 4-2-5 over the years. It’s sort of the same defense I’ve always had since I’ve been a head coach. It’s a pressure 4-4, but it’s evolved into a 4-2-5,” Nichol said. “My second year here, we ended up in that. We were third in the state at that time in points given up that year. We had the safeties that could do it. They could come up to the line and make tackles, as well as play the cover 4.” It’s a type of defense that is geared more for the pro game that features nine guys in the box. The key to the defensive scheme is the play of the safeties. The safeties are playing a guessing game with the quarterback, and they have to be prepared to attack the line of scrimmage to shut down the run. The one thing that Nichol wants to stress with his defense is the importance of making “splash plays.” For comparison, take the Pittsburgh Steelers of last year. The Steelers led the league in defensive yards allowed, and were ranked as the top defense. They passed the numbers game
as the top ranked D, but what about the eye test? The Steelers were unable to capitalize on turnovers. Nichol is hoping his guys are able to take advantage of those opportunities. “Let’s get after the ball. We’ve got to be aggressive,” Nichol preached. “If we wait around, the other guys are going to be making a play. I think we have some guys that are aggressive.” Nichol said he is counting on the play of Byers, Arrington, Josh Shuckers and Andrew Fedigan on the defensive side to lead the charge. One position that needed tweaking was inside linebacker. With graduation, the team thinned out on the inside. Instead of Nichol going to the players about the issue, one of the leaders came to him instead. “Falgout knew over the winter that we may need some help, and as a team player, he said he wanted to move inside,” Nichol said. “He’s grown into the position. He’s been working in there, along with Fisher and Perry.” (Continued on next page)

‘We have to get the best 11 guys on the field’ (Continued from previous page)
“He’s grown into the position. He’s been working in there, along with Fisher and Perry.” For the football team to succeed, Nichol needs his veterans and young players to step up — maybe more the latter than the former. In fact, Nichol said he wants all of his guys to go as hard as they can for as long as they can. “Their breathing time is Saturday night. We’re not

going to worry about that,” Nichol said. “We’re going to go as hard as we can for as long as we can, and the next guy is going to come up and do the same. We have to put the best 11 guys on the field.” What about the fans, coach? Should the fans be expecting a down year after reaching the playoffs last season? Is it the dreaded “R” word? “I wouldn’t say we are rebuilding. I’d just say we are young,” Nichol said. “We have guys moving around and competing. We have a ways to go because they need repetitions. We have seniors who have worked very hard. I think if you use that term, it gives them a big disservice.” Nichol is focused, as is the team. They know what it was like to reach the playoffs last year, and they want to achieve that feeling again. “They played really well in the second half against a very good Clearfield team. We are building off of that,” Nichol said. “We are trying to close the gap down. We have nine seniors who are eager to get back to the playoffs and the District IX Championship game.”
In order to get back to the the playoffs and have a successful season, Nichol said it comes down to one word: focus. “The team will be successful if they can focus on each day’s work. Focus on each day’s work and take it one play at a time. Don’t get caught up in anything but hard work,” Nichol said. “We believe in blocking and tackling. That takes all of our focus. Other things will happen. We’re looking right now to prepare ourselves for Brookville. They’re a worthy opponent and are someone we have to prepare ourselves for.” “When the games get there, you have to learn to focus on the next play. The last play’s over and there’s nothing you can do about it. I think we’ll win a lot of games if we do that. That’s the challenge and that’s always the challenge as far as high school football goes. You never really understand it until you become the head coach and see all of the distractions.” The overall goals won’t change for Nichol. He said he keeps them the same as always.
“We want to win the KSAC Big School Conference, we want to get to the district championship game, we want to win the district championship game, we want to get to the PIAA playoffs and compete on the state level,” Nichol said. “The goals are always the same. I think you measure people by how they grind it out day-to-day.” Day-to-day will be the key for the Chucks. They’ll be home for four games (Union, St. Marys, Karns City and Clarion) and on the road for five (Brookville, DuBois, AC Valley, Clarion-Limestone and Moniteau). If you’ve listened to a coach give a press conference before, you know what they say about the schedule, right? “The next game. The next one up. That’s the one I’m looking forward to the most,” Nichol said. “You’ve got to focus on the very next opponent because in football, on any given night, the other team can beat you. You’ll hear that from me all of the time and it’s a cliche, I understand. If you don’t do that, you get caught looking back or looking forward.”

Raiders football looks to draw upon seniors for success By Dan Long Of The Spirit
2013 Fall Sports, The Punxsutawney Spirit & Jefferson County Neighbors, August 2013 - 33
BROOKVILLE — The 2013-14 Brookville Raiders varsity football team will not be shy on experience this season, as the team boasts 10 seniors on its 28-man roster. The 10 seniors: Braiden Smith, Derek Grant, Zach Vroman, Dane Gilhousen, Stewie Chesnutt, Nate Nosker, Easton Singleton, Logan Myers, Cecil Grubbs and Conrad Schindler will look to provide leadership both on and off the field during the 2013 campaign. “All 10 of those seniors are quality players who are going to get a lot of playing time,” said Chris Dworek, who is in his 18th year as the Raiders head coach. “If they’re not on offense or defense, they’ll really contribute on special teams.” Since the first week of practice, the seniors have already asserted themselves as vocal leaders on the team. “Attitude and effort are the number one things that stand out (from the seniors). You could see last week in the practice — the coaches didn’t even have to say anything to them — they were helping the younger kids and guiding them along, which is great to see. They know that those guys are the future and they know a strong chain is important to the team, so that was nice. In the scrimmage (against Union), you could just see guys (seniors) flying around, and the effort was there. When the second (younger) group was in, the older guys were cheering, rooting and hollering on the sidelines for them. So those things are powerful intangibles that lead, a lot, to having success down the road,” said Dworek. With nearly every position, the Raiders will have seniors with game experience to help guide the underclassmen. At running back, senior Vroman will look to further enshrine his name in the Brookville history books after two dominant years at the position as a sophomore and junior. Vroman is currently sixth all time in total rushing yards as a Raider with 1,977 yards and is tied for sixth all time in rushing touchdowns with 17. Vroman also broke the school record last season for the longest TD play from scrimmage with a 98-yard run against Clarion. Juniors Jonah Sampson, Cole Clever and Damien Payne will look to take some of the load off Vroman in the back field this season. “Jonah Sampson is ready to go. He was ready last year, but it was a crowded back field. Later in the year, when we went with three running backs, he was the third guy in and he was fine; it wasn’t a concern at all having him in there. He’ll be ready,” said Dworek. “Cole Clever is having a good camp and Damien
Payne is having a good week so far, so we have some guys that we feel comfortable with. The main thing is that they want to be here and contribute, which is something we appreciate.” The quarterback position is one slot that will not have a senior at the helm, but still has a player with game experience — junior Bobby McGranor — who Dworek feels is probably his best fit to replace the athletic Cam Yard from last season. “I would say the frontrunner is Bobby McGranor (for quarterback). He had a good scrimmage (against Union) with running, passing and decision-making, and he had a good off season with the summer, spring and open gym. He seems interested and seems committed in doing well and he had a good scrimmage. That’s where we’ll start, and things are always open to change, and he knows that and all the other quarterbacks know that, too,” said Dworek. McGranor is already familiar with playing at the varsity level, as he spent time at the receiver and cornerback positions last season. “He (McGranor) is very similar (to Cam Yard). He’s athletic, a good runner, a good passer; so he’s very similar. It’s nice to have an athletic quarterback who can scramble if needed. We have a lot of quarterback run option plays, and he fits the bill for that,” said Dworek. With the loss of Nathan St. Laurent and Evan Matheny at the wide receiver, senior Braiden Smith will look continue his success at the position after a solid junior year with some help from the underclassmen. “Braiden Smith coming back is a big help. He knows what’s going on and has had a good camp so far,” said Dworek. Dworek predicts senior Grubbs can also catch some passes to help the Raiders’ offense. “He (Grubbs) knows exactly what’s going on and is a good route runner,” said Dworek. Dworek also looks for juniors Brandon Bietz, Jake Kessecker, Jordan Haugh and newcomer Logan Thrush to help out at the position. “If we had six solid receivers, that would be perfect. If we get into games and would want run a lot of four receiver (formations), we can rotate those guys in, and I think so far we do (have solid receivers),” said Dworek. “We’ve got some returning guys who have had good practices and good summers and know what’s going on, know how to run their routes and know the plays; so that really helps.” For Smith, in addition to playing wide receiver, he will use his breakneck speed to return punts this year after setting the Raider record last season with a 90-yard return
against St. Marys. With the loss of Yard as the kicker, Dworek must decide between Clever and fellow junior Kyle Reynolds. “So far, Cole Clever and Kyle Reynolds are having a good competition (for the position),” said Dworek. With the departure of Nathan Bonfardine, Derek Geer and Justin Snyder on defense, Dworek will look for new players to step up to fill the voids. “Sam Clowes is doing very well at middle linebacker, where Nort (Bonfardine) was. We have a good rotation at defensive tackle with Nate Nosker, Stewie Chesnutt, Easton Singleton and Bryce Town,” said Dworek. “The defensive end (positions) are looking well too with Conrad Schindler, Derek Grant and Kyle Reynolds. So these three guys will get some playing time and fill the void left by those guys (Bonfardine, Geer and Snyder).” Senior Nosker will also provide support on the offensive line after a being named to the Pennsylvania Football News AA All-State third team as an offensive lineman. “We have good, quality kids there (on the offensive line). There’s seven kids that we rotate in without feeling funny or (having) any weaknesses, I think. We have some other guys that are learning the position that will be OK, but it might take them a little longer, but those first front seven are doing really well,” said Dworek. The Raider coach looks for the strong linemen unit to do big things this year. “I think the linemen are very enthusiastic. Coach (Jim) Rush did a good job with them this offseason in the weight room. They were breaking records on the weight room record board. You have Stewie Chesnutt, Nate Nosker, Easton Singleton and Logan Myers; those four were really lighting hard with coach Rush this year. That gets everybody excited when they see those big guys getting bigger and stronger. That encourages the running backs, and Zach Vroman is going to have a good year. The receivers know that they’re going to have time for the quarterback to throw, so they’re going to get some more action. Defensively, those front four are going to eat up a lot of blocks and it is going to free up everyone behind them,” said Dworek. Dworek will be able to utilize some sizable players at the tight end position with Schindler (6’3”), Grant (6’1”) and Reynolds (6’). “He’s (Schindler) looking good. He had a couple good games (last season) until he got injured. Derek Grant, he’s a new kid and he’s a senior, but he played when he was
younger. He (Grant) is having a good camp and is looking good at defensive end, too. Kyle Reynolds is another kid that is having a good preseason so far,” said Dworek. Coach Dworek has analyzed the issues the Raiders had with last year’s team, which finished with a 6-5 record (6-4 regular season). “Offensively, we’ve got to get a little better. We’ve got to protect the ball (better). We had too many turnovers (last season), especially during the last part of the year, which led to the defense struggling. They (the defense) were on the field too much and those things intertwined together, and it’s something we’ve talked about and stressed in practice. We had a really good scrimmage in which we created a lot of turnovers, and I think we only had one by the end of scrimmage,” said Dworek. Kessecker, Thrush and Wyatt Shaffer are newcomers who Dworek feels could contribute this season. “Jake Kessecker has had a very good summer and a really good camp so far. He came between the middle of the year and the beginning of the year last year and he was brand-new to our program, and he stuck it out all year and got a lot of playing time with special teams last year. So he’s ready to
step up on offense and defense,” said Dworek. “Logan Thrush is a new kid moving in; he’s going to play a lot. He looks like he can handle himself really well,” said Dworek. “Wyatt Shaffer is a 10th grader that had a good week and a good scrimmage last week. So he’s pushing the old guys for starting time at receiver and defensive back,” said Dworek. Dworek will look to earn his 100th win as the Raiders head coach — he’s currently at 99 — during Brookville’s 10-game regular season schedule that will feature six home games. “DuBois will be tough. Karns City and Clarion, I think, will be the toughest teams. They’ve got a lot of players coming back and a lot of good players coming back,” said Dworek. The Raiders begin their season against rival Punxsy on Friday, Aug. 30, in Brookville at 7 p.m. “Its a rival game. It doesn’t matter who is coming back or who’s doing what. It’s the first game and it’s always a surprise. That fact that it’s a rivalry game makes it even more intense, and it really evens the playing field when that sort of thing happens. They’ll be tough,” said Dworek.
