CrossOver brings music ministry to park

CrossOver, a Southern gospel family singing group from Mahaffey, began its music ministry at the Pennsylvania State Singing Convention in Martinsburg. From church services to gospel sings and private functions, even at the local mall, CrossOver uses music to follow God’s word, “Go ye into all the world and preach My word.” The family group is committed

to going anywhere to sing and give witness to others about the saving grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Their goal is to bring the joy of the Lord, through music, to everyone they meet. Their performance takes place in Barclay Square on Sunday, June 30 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. through the sponsorship of Miller Brothers Furniture.

Blackwood Brothers Quartet the best in gospel The Blackwood B ro t h e r s Q u a r t e t , “the best-known name in gospel music,” will perform Sunday, June 30 in Barclay Square with two shows, the first from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the second from 8 to 9 p.m. The quartet was formed in 1934 by brothers Roy, Doyle and James, and Roy’s son, R.W. James, Jr. continued the family tradition by bringing the name out of retirement after the death of his father, the last surviving member of the original quartet. Today the family tradition continues with Billy Blackwood, Wayne Little, Butch Owens and Mike Helwig forming one of the best gospel quartets in the country. Tenor Wayne Little formed the Crystal

River Boys Quartet and later sang with the New Millennium Quartet. He was a featured singer at the Pentagon for a 9-11 memorial service with the Rev. Franklin Graham. B i l l y, James Blackwood’s youngest son, sings baritone and is the music arranger for the quartet. Blackwood played drums for J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet at the age of 14. He also played for the Blackwood Brothers, Gordon Jensen and Sunrise, and Andrus/ Blackwood & Company and toured with Voice, the opening act for the Elvis Presley show. He has traveled in solo ministry and has worked in youth ministry and pastoral ministry. Butch Owens is the newest member of the

group but is no stranger to gospel music. He sang bass with an earlier version of the Stamps Quartet and most recently with Bob Jones

and the Songfellows Quartet. He recently retired from the Jackson, MS police department after 25 years. Joining the quartet as

their new lead singer is Mike Helwig. Helwig previously sang with the Wilburns, the Stamps Quartet and the Dixie Echoes.

“The therapy is really good here,” Naomi Schreckengost said of her short-term rehabilitation stay at Mulberry Square Elder Care and Rehabilitation. “I was in the hospital because of a sprained ankle.” Mulberry Square was recommended to Naomi by a family member who is familiar with the facility. “I got really weak and had to be built back up. The therapists at Mulberry Square helped me do that.” Mulberry Square offers Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies. Naomi received daily therapy to regain her strength and mobility and improve her activities of daily living with the ultimate goal of returning home. “They work with you. They don’t force you to do anything. If you need to rest, they let you rest, and they come back for you later. They have patience,” Naomi said of the therapy staff. “On a scale of 1-10, they are a 10. “The people were nice, and I was treated well,” Naomi said of the staff at Mulberry Square. During her stay at Mulberry Square, Naomi was able to enjoy a wide variety of activities offered daily. “I liked the country western group that played, and I liked bingo.” Activities include music events, games, parties, crafts, Cooking Club, Sunshine Club, religious activities, room to room activities and community outings. After spending several weeks in skilled care, Naomi will be returning to her home with the services of a home health agency.

Kids will be amazed at the Rock & Roll Pet Store Show Groundhog Festival Edition, The Punxsutawney Spirit, June 2013 - 19

The Rock & Roll Pet Store Kids Show, a unique children’s variety show, will set up shop in Barclay Square on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, July 1, 2 and 3. The store is a live musical and magical adventure of imagination made special by the participation of children in the audience. The excitement builds as one by one the live, friendly and gentle animals fill the store. Kids also have the opportunity to bring realistic animal puppets to life. Mike Zaffuto has shared his kid show stage with Joe Negri of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and as a musician in his early days, he opened shows for Ronnie Milsap and Toby Keith. Mike’s gift for music and his love of kids, magic and animals have combined with his imagination to create this one of a

kind show. Bring the kids to the square on Monday from 11:30 a.m. to noon, 1:30 to 2 p.m. and 3:30

The Holidays keep a Pittsburgh music tradition alive The Holidays bring freshness and vitality to the Groundhog Festival on Wednesday, July 3 for two

great shows with the sponsorship of the Punxsutawney Rotary Club. More than 50 years ago,

five young men from Clairton realized their dream when they formed The Holidays and made their singing debut in

1958. Replacing one member with a female singer, their style of harmonies was soon being compared to Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners. They recorded and sang until 1962 when the group disbanded. In 1995, they made a comeback with two original members and a CD of their earlier songs. Adding lead singer Sam Ferrella, The Holidays performed on the WQED film, “The Sound of Pittsburgh.” In 2002, the group recorded

a new CD and continued performing, opening for acts including Lou Christie, Bobby Rydell, Gary Puckett, The Vogues and many others. Joining Ferrella in the front line are singers Josephine Crooks, Walt Lendl and Wayne Zollinger. With an abundance of energy and charisma and outstanding harmony, The Holidays will take you through three decades of great tunes. The first show is from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the second from 9 to 10 p.m.

The Tot Trot is a race for the new walkers. Contestants who are 12 to 18 months of age will race the same course as the crawlers in the Diaper Derby. The carpeted surface guards against injury in case of spills. Encouragement from family and friends will insure an exciting time for the little trotters to stay on course and finish the race. Registration for the tot trot will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, and the race will immediately follow the Diaper Derby. The Tot Trot is sponsored by Adagio Health/GFC.

Greg Allan Band gives Garth Brooks his due The Greg Allan Band will present a stirring tribute to Garth Brooks in Barclay Square on Thursday, July 4 with two shows, from 7 to 8 p.m. and 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The band’s performance is sponsored by Proform Powdered Metals and S&T Bank. With a crisp, clear voice, Allan recreates Brooks’ songs with a spine-tingling accuracy that recalls the emotion and expression the country legend is famous for. Festivalgoers will hear Brooks’ most beloved songs from “The Dance” to “Thunder Rolls” and many more. Allan takes fans from the early country western days of Brooks through his award-winning career and the rock ‘n roll and pop elements he’s brought to his famous music.
