To prosper and to remain competitive, relevant and safe, nations must adapt to the changing global environment. Modern economies grow and prosper to the degree they can innovate and push the frontiers of technology. This will be best accomplished by nations that prepare their workforce and focus their research in the STEM disciplines. Gary R. Bertoline, college of technology dean

innovation the spark to
Some call it a spark. Others call it inspiration. Discovery. Innovation. We call it technology, where facts, intuition, drive and utility meet. In its nearly 50-year existence, the College of Technology has focused on using technology to spark improvements in business, industry and education. Its founders understood the value of putting concepts into practice, and they designed a curriculum full of concrete experiences to complement classroom lessons. The academic programs have expanded and shifted to respond to new technological needs, discoveries and trends. Industry representatives were invited to be part of the process, and they gained access to faculty expertise and research. These partnerships energized students and faculty with added purpose while improving companies near and far. Today’s programs are focused on 21st century innovations and emerging technologies, yet they are grounded in theory. They are grounded in people. In new applications and interpretations. And in the belief that Technology can move the world forward.

The Technology academic programs are designed to help students become leaders, no matter where they end up. And they end up in both expected and surprising places. From Fortune 100 companies to the newest high-tech start-up, they are engineers, developers, managers, vice presidents and designers. They are able to see where each process fits into a larger system and how to communicate the needs for each.

facul ty With a blend of industry experience
and focused expertise, College of Technology faculty provide a unique perspective to students and industry. They apply the latest research and technologies to today’s problems and involve students in the process. And they share their discoveries in the classroom to create a richer learning experience.
Faculty research interests encompass a wide range of topics, from industry standards to leadership techniques to big data and aviation safety. Their research projects often showcase the interdisciplinary nature of technology, as well as global reach and impact. Here are a few spotlights:
2
Thomas Hacker, Ph.D., is co-leader for information technology for NEES (George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation) at Purdue. Since Purdue began managing the NEEShub, the number of users and files uploaded has dramatically increased. “There is a growing recognition of the importance of that data and the need to facilitate access to the data and to visualize it,” Hacker says. “We’re now moving from the petascale to the exascale. We want to push the boundaries of data curation.” He also is working to improve end-to-end network performance for scientific applications operating on very fast wide area networks.
1 Bedrich Benes, Ph.D., is combining his work in computational simulations and visualizations with new work in materials science to create a new field of research: computational graphics. He has also collaborated with other researchers to create visualizations of carbon dioxide emissions in cities to track where and when they occur. With his graduate students and industry partner Adobe, he has come up with a way to add strength to 3D printing designs before they are created on a printer.
3 Marcus Rogers, Ph.D., is working with the U.S. Department of State to help train law enforcement officials in Eastern European countries before they join the European Union. He has made several trips to Croatia in anticipation of its accession to the EU. In addition, Rogers leads the college’s cyber forensics area. One recent project focuses on creating ways to visualize and analyze the vast amount of geolocation data available from cell phones and cell towers. In collaboration with other institutions, he is also working on ways to predict cyber attacks and then stop them, or at the least minimize their negative effects.
Founded in 1869 in West Lafayette, Indiana, the university proudly serves its state as well as the nation and the world. Academically, Purdue’s role as a major research institution is supported by top-ranking disciplines in pharmacy, business, engineering, and agriculture.
