Promotion Committee By Gay Rodgers, Promotion Committee Member

Marketing: Lady Gaga is my muse

Always looking for that unique marketing idea from a new and different source? Currently I am taking some lessons from Lady Gaga… In dire need of some promotional adrenalin, Monster Loyalty: How Lady Gaga Turns Followers Into Fanatics by Jackie Huba was recommended to me. Initially I was reading and concentrating on the summer program here at the farm, but not long into the thought process I began to see the possibilities for marketing the Ayrshire Cow! Ms. Huba breaks down the success of Lady Gaga into 7 lessons: Lesson 1: Focus on your one percenters Lesson 2: Lead with values Lesson 3: Build community Lesson 4: Give fans a name Lesson 5: Embrace shared symbols Lesson 6: Make them feel like Rock Stars Lesson 7: Generate something to talk about Seven lessons! OK, let’s look at these lessons and how our cow could be featured: Focus on your one percenters. Statistically 1% of your fan/purchaser base is your most loyal. They want everything you have to offer. Sheer numbers give Lady Gaga the edge. With 60 million Facebook followers her 1% is at 60,000. They will purchase albums, t-shirts, perfume, fashions and more because they believe in Lady Gaga. Yes, the numbers for Ayrshire enthusiasts are a bit smaller, at the moment, making it more manageable… and we can identify them, the board and committee members/the worker bees of the national and/or state organizations. But who are THEIR one percenters? And how are they focusing on THEM? The rest of the lessons give insight and guidance as to our approach. Lead with values. This lesson transcends the ‘what we do’ and the ‘how we do it’ on our individual farms. It attempts to get at ‘WHY Ayrshires?’ I can only answer for myself. The value of having Ayrshires on my farm is based on my heritage, their grazing ability, milk components and the Arts. A bit before the farmers of Scotland were rallying around this ‘new’ cow that was able to make milk on ‘scanty rations’ my bagpipe-toting ancestors arrived in the Big Valley. Through the generations a regard for Scotland was kept alive. So for me to have Ayrshires at Hameau is an homage to that hard-working, fun-loving and hospitable core of my DNA. And these girls have purpose—they forage! My four-legged harvesters are still (in January, no doubt out of habit) visiting the happy pastures of once greener grass. Side note: eight cuttings in 2015 on 21 paddocks throughout the grazing season. During which butterfat stayed strong in the 4-4.2% range and protein was 3.3%. My mailbox milk price tends to be stronger than my neighbors milking another breed. And for the artistic value of the Ayrshire cow: my sister, Joy, and nephew, Jack, are artists. And there are groups of artists that participate in painting workshops on the farm in the spring and fall. All have shared this bit of artistry and wisdom--look to the color chart. Red and green are complimentary colors! By design Ayrshires on lush pasture is a beautiful thing. Build community. Ayrshire breeders are respectable at this one. We have identified the ‘common thread’ that sews us together—our cow. We have our conventions. We participate and attend state meetings and county or state shows. Yet this lesson is perhaps about relevancy. Where/how does the Ayrshire fit in to the scheme of American Agriculture? Are we successfully embracing the community of supporters already out there? Who can be further identified as a population to be introduced to or engaged by our cow? This lesson is also about the people connection. Enthusiasm can be contagious. In every group—church, book clubs, other farm organizations, advisory groups--I am involved in I introduce myself as an owner of Ayrshires, every time. There is a population of metropolitan girls who come to my farm and know only the Ayrshire cow! They will indeed take the memory and message home to their present and future spheres of influence. More questions to answer: Who is our community? How can we build it better? In Pennsylvania we have decided to try something new. Our Association is working on a Spring Heifer Show, adding to the comradery of our membership meeting and sale, April 15-16, 2016. It is an open show, consider joining us! Give fans a name. To establish an elite sense of community, I understand the importance of this one. Let’s revisit this one in a later conversation. Embrace shared symbols. Pepsi/Coke. Donkey/Elephant. Blue/Red. Need I say more about Cont. on pg. 8

he Southern National Ayrshire show was held Tuesday, November 10, 2015, in Louisville, Kentucky. Joe Sparrow of Edmenton, Kentucky, placed the 110 head exhibited by breeders from across the country. The title of Junior Champion went to Family-Af-Ayr L Madison, the winning Fall Yearling of the day as well as the winning Fall Yearling at the International Show. Madison, owned by Cheyene Hughey and Mark and Becky Brown of Stitzer, Wisconsin, was the 2014 All-American Fall Calf. Sired by FamilyAf-Ayr R. Lancelot-ET, she is the daughter of an EX-93 Lucifer with several All-American nominations, and then two more Excellent dams. The Reserve Junior Champion was Topp-View Bendig WannaWatch-ET, owned by Keaton and Kinley Topp of Botkins, Ohio. WannaWatch is a Bendig daughter of the EX90 Felton’s Whoa Baby, the Unanimous AllAmerican Winter Calf in 2006. Burdette continued to prove himself as the sire to beat, as he sired the Intermediate Champion, Barrick Burdette Dora VG-88. Dora was the winning Junior Two-Year-Old for Megan Bailey of Glasgow, Kentucky, and was coming off a second-place finish at the International Show. She is backed by a Wilton dam. A Calimero daughter, Old-Bankston JC Bri’s Bikini-ET, took home Reserve Intermediate Champion honors for John Cannon and Kurt Wolf, Dyersville, Iowa. The VG-86 winning Senior Two-Year-Old is out of the EX-94 Steam-Valley Wilton Magic

Bri, Grand Champion of the International Show in 2011 and that year’s Unanimous AllAmerican Five-Year-Old. A pair of Burdette Four-Year-Olds caught Judge Sparrow’s eye for Champion titles. Senior and Grand Champion titles went to the winning Four-Year-Old, Hi-Ayr View Burdette Andie-ET, shown by Brian and Kristi Dinderman of Orangeville, Illinois. Scored EX-92, she is backed by an EX-92 Harmony with over 120,000M lifetime. Felton’s Burdette Magic Moose, the second-place Four-Year-Old shown by Emerald Farms of Winchester, Ohio, was named Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion of the show. She is VG-88 and was Nominated Junior All-American in 2014. She is backed by a Cedarvale Alexander dam with records to 4.4% fat. Ohio came in strong as the winning State Herd, with additional help from the Premier Breeder & Exhibitor, Emerald Farms, and the winning Total Performance Cow, Miller’s Burt Bran Muffin. Bran Muffin, the secondplace 100,000 Pound Cow, is scored EX-93 and has an extensive show record in milking form. Backed by an EX-91 dam, Bran Muffin is owned by Jack Miller of Bradner, Ohio and has records to 31,729M and 7.0% fat. Following are the top six in each class: Spring Heifer Calves (16) 1. Don’t miss out! March 31 Deadline!

Lady Gaga cont. from pg. 4

the power of branding? At Hameau, as we recognize the Plum Bottom herd, purple will be the color of choice! Make them feel like Rock Stars. Lady Gaga has the edge on this one as she saves prime spaces, front and center, at her concerts for her fanatic fans. She truly ‘celebrates her customers and puts them in the spotlight.’ What more can we, as an organization or as a farm or individual, do to celebrate our customers and put them in the spotlight? Generate something to talk about. No, I will not be sporting a dress of red meat in Oklahoma as Lady Gaga did in 2010 for the MTV Video Music Awards, but this lesson is one of creativity. Out-of-the-box thinking which leads to great chatter. One of the best summer activities here at Hameau stemmed from a program idea where community was the theme, and the Ayrshire cow was featured. To climax the discussion we designed a

‘Peace & Love Cow Parade!’ Two white heifers (blank canvases) were chosen. Two teams assigned. Thirty minutes allowed for preparation. Tempura paint, hats, feather boas and environmentally friendly hairspray could be used. On their own the teams added music. And the parade that followed was one talked about for days. (See photo. Tempura paint is easily washed out of girls and heifers and clothes…) So in the midst of winter, let’s put pen to paper and ink out some ideas to feature the Ayrshire cow, celebrate her loyal, albeit fanatical fans, make them feel like Rock Stars and give the Agricultural world something to TALK ABOUT! Audrey Gay Rodgers is the current owner/ director of Hameau Farm in the Big Valley, a summer ‘Cow Camp’ for girls and home to the Plum Bottom Ayrshires, in Pennsylvania. And as you read this she is probably wearing purple…

Mentors &

Memories

with David Patrick By Donna Mertz, Director-at-Large

I

t is my honor & privilege to interview David Patrick of Maple-Dell Farms, Woodbine, Maryland, for our next installment of Mentors & Memories. Mr. Patrick is a fourth generation dairyman who received his first two Ayrshire heifers as a present from his dad in 1940. Those two Ayrshires were bought from Wilber Barktell in Mt. Alto, Pennsylvania. The county agent was Warren G. Myers who was a LOVER of Ayrshires. Hence why 2/3 of the dairy herds in Howard County were Ayrshires at that time!! From those first two heifers, David grew a herd of 45 Registered Ayrshires by 1955. David became a member of the US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association in 1947 and since that time has held numerous positions and achieved many well-deserved honors. He has served as a Director on the Board and Vice President as well as holding the office of President from 1998-1999. In 2002 he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award. David has also been very influential in his state Ayrshire association, serving as President of the Maryland/Delaware Ayrshire Association from 1974-1977 and 1981-1982. He has served on the planning committees for the 1989, 1999 and 2011 National Ayrshire Conventions held in Maryland. In 1994 David was inducted into the Maryland Dairy Shrine during the Maryland State Fair. David was awarded as the US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Master Breeder in 2010. When I asked David, ‘Why the Ayrshire cow?’ he responded, “The Ayrshire became a favorite breed to me because of the good production and the excellent conformation that they possessed. Since I had very little money in my early life I could purchase my Ayrshire animals at a reasonable price. Unfortunately my early heifers had a large number of bulls so it was difficult to increase my herd numbers. Even now I love to help

with the milking because of the Ayrshire cows. I remember talking with my son one morning and stating that if it wasn’t for the Ayrshires coming in the parlor I wouldn’t get up at 4:00 am to help milk the Holsteins!” David took his passion for the Ayrshire and has paid it forward. He has been a major influence in exposing and encouraging youth for Ayrshire Cattle. In 1989 David helped to initiate the Maryland 4-H Dairy Leasing Program. Now many of Howard County 4-Hers join in showing the Patricks’ Ayrshire cattle at shows alongside his grandkids. Maple-Dell also holds the annual Maryland State Ayrshire Judging contest as well as welcoming other local 4-H and collegiate judging teams to practice. Throughout the years Maple-Dell has also provided Ayrshires for numerous dairy promotional appearances at venues such as professional Baltimore soccer, basketball and baseball games. One of the most notable appearances was at the famous Camden Yards for the Baltimore Orioles! David has also taken Ayrshires to Washington D.C. schools for inner city kids to experience farm life.

“I remember talking with my son one morning and stating that if it wasn’t for the Ayrshires coming in the parlor I wouldn’t get up at 4:00 am to help milk the Holsteins!” David has been active in exhibiting his Ayrshires at the local, state, and national levels for over 65 years. Maple-Dell Farm has been awarded numerous All-American and Junior All-American honors over the years as well as All-Canadian honors with Maple-Dell

I.R.S. Sweetnine. One of the most memorable years was 1988 when the Patrick family won Senior and Grand Champion, Reserve Junior Champion, first-place Dairy and Breeders Herd and was awarded Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor Banners at the All American Dairy Show. In 1993 Maple-Dell had the honor of four of their cows composing the Ayrshire class in the Hoard’s Dairyman Judging Contest. Maple-Dell I.R.S. Sweetnine was named Junior Champion at World Dairy Expo and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 1995, a first in history!!! In 2003 David Patrick was honored with five others at the All American Dairy Show for being an Ayrshire Exhibitor for 40 consecutive years dating back to the first show in 1941. Again in 2013 he was honored marking 50 consecutive years exhibiting at the All American Dairy Show. Maple-Dell Farm has had the Grand Champion Ayrshire Bull at the Maryland State Fair from 1968-1971 as well as Grand Champion Cow 11 times! These are just a few highlights of Maple-Dell Memories over the years. When asked what his favorite thing about showing is David laments, “Cleaning up the cows and making them look their very best is rewarding. Winning is fun too, but we also have to show good sportsmanship for those times when we don’t win. Showing is in my blood. One either loves to show cattle or they don’t. Showing gives the opportunity to view and appreciate a quality animal and is a true measurement of your own cattle against the best in the country.” I also asked David to name a cow or cows that has imprinted herself in his memory. His answer, “A cow that I really liked when I was in my twenties was Lucky Puff from Strathglass Farm.” How many of us wish we could have seen that great cow! For his

favorite Ayrshire cow families he named three. Maple-Dell Hi-Kick Sweet Pea EX91, who is the dam of Maple-Dell Soldier who today has over 800 offspring in the US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association pedigree system. Sweet Pea was nominated by fellow Ayrshire breeders for the Purina Mills, “Dairy Cows of North America” painting by Bonnie Mohr. She was also first runner-up in the 1998 Ayrshire Digest Centerfold Contest. MapleDell Trident Song EX-91, who is no stranger to the tanbark trail, is the second matriarch David listed. Song was named Reserve Intermediate Champion of the 2002 MidAtlantic National and Reserve All-American Jr 3-Year-Old. She came back to be first FourYear-Old and Grand Champion of the 2003 Mid-Atlantic National. She then traveled to Madison to be named first Four-Year-Old, Reserve Sr. and Reserve Grand Champion of the Central National Show at World Dairy Expo. She was named All-American 4-YearOld in 2003. Song is the dam of notable bulls Maple-Dell Shipley-ET, Maple-Dell Avenger Sarge-ET, and Maple-Dell Sum Total. However, David’s all-time favorite cow family is Maple-Dell Zorro Dafourth EX-95 2E. This Ayrshire beauty was born on July 4th, 2002, and was named “Dafourth” by Ann. Dafourth graced the colored shavings earning Intermediate Championship Honors at the 2005 Mid-Atlantic National and second-place Jr Three-Year-Old at the Central National Show, World Dairy Expo in 2005. She was awarded Reserve AllAmerican Jr. 3-Year-Old honors that year. In 2006 David led Dafourth to Senior and Grand Champion Honors at the All American Dairy Show. The pair followed this up by being named Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion of World Dairy Expo. She ended the show year being bestowed Reserve AllAmerican 4-Year-Old. Not only did this cow

do well in the show ring, she also worked when she was at home. She made a lifetime production of 165,180 lbs. with a 4.4% fat and 3.1% protein. She has 27 offspring registered with sons in A.I. such as Maple-Dell Modem Diego-ET and Maple-Dell Modem DrewET. Her grandsons, Maple-Dell O DixonET and Maple-Dell Burdette Dempsey are also in stud. Dafourth showed, milked, and transmitted….she was the complete cow! David recalls his favorite moment as, “Favorite Ayrshire moment (that I can remember) is having the National Ayrshire Convention come to our farm for breakfast and a tour in 2011. Seeing the Ayrshire youth stroll through the barns amongst us older farmers was encouraging. Being able to say a prayer amongst so many wonderful Ayrshire breeders was a blessing in itself. We are blessed in so many ways with our families and friends. And my Ayrshire breeders are surely close to my heart because of our shared bond with the beautiful red and whites.”

always remember as a true friend that I miss dearly. There are many that I have worked with that I admire: Doug Evans, Charlie Gable, John Dalton, Raymond Jarrett, Jim McConnell, Lynn Lee and Steve McDonald.” He also stated that it is good to see herds with great production such as the herds of Dale Maulfair, Don Gable and Doug Evans, to name a few. David’s advice to all Ayrshire breeders is, “The one repeating lesson I have learned from my many mentors is to always be proud of our Ayrshire cows. I try to attend the annual meeting every year to see and meet people that I have worked with over the years. It is a true pleasure in life to see friends that have meant so much to me over these many years.” It has been an honor to interview one of the great mentors of Ayrshire breeders. Mr. David Patrick is a humble gentleman who has and continues to leave an indelible mark on the Ayrshire breed.

“The one repeating lesson I have learned from my many mentors is to always be proud of our Ayrshire cows.” When I asked David to name his mentors, these were his remarks. “There have been many breeders that I have admired and too many to name all of them. But I must name local Maryland breeders that were an inspiration to me. First it was the Hill family – Wauwatosa Farm, right down the road. They had a great herd and were the best when it came time to having the string ready for the show ring. Next it was the Shank/Creek family of Palmyra Farm living in the western part of Maryland. One of the best herds in the country with Ralph Shank Sr. who I will

Ayrshire Youth Scholarship Contest 2015 Winner By Christopher Sweeney

When I joined the 4-H Dairy Cattle Clover Bud Club at age five, my parents bought my first Ayrshire, and I became an Ayrshire youth member. Marinda was a junior calf that I could exhibit in the cloverbud show. I was so excited. We brought a hutch over to our house and placed it in the back yard so I could work with her all day. From cloverbud days I graduated to regular 4-H and continued to exhibit my Ayrshire animals. Every year I made an Ayrshire poster for the fair and a local sponsor created an Outstanding Ayrshire Exhibit award in memory of all Ayrshire breeders. My brother and I worked hard to include as much educational information about the breed so people at the fair could learn about the “red” cows in the barn. Over many years we have enjoyed working together and creating new displays. In 2012 our county celebrated “75 Years of 4-H,” and we had a huge celebration. My brother researched our farm heritage and I researched the family’s role in 4-H. We discovered that our great-grandfather was the dairy leader at the fair and our Ayrshire cows traveled to the fair by train. We also learned that my great-grandmother was the manager of the 4-H Milk Bar, a place all the dairy kids enjoy working today. Since age nine I competed in 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl at the county, district and state levels. I also competed in Dairy Jeopardy, a contest that I had never participated in before. In 2012 and 2013 I was fortunate to be able to travel to the conventions and both years placed first in the Dairy Jeopardy contest along with doing well in Dairy Quiz Bowl. Every year I created an Ayrshire Folding Display for the contest and submitted pictures for the Photo Contest. My state youth leader encouraged me to enter the Ayrshire Intermediate Record Book Contest. I did not own many Ayrshires so I did not think I was able to fill the pages in the book, but when I started to list all the things I had learned and accomplished, I was very proud of my finished product. As a participant of the ProDairy Junior Leader program, I had the honor of attending the National 4-H Dairy Conference and the World Dairy Expo and I eyed the outstanding Ayrshires in the show. In 2014-2015 my senior year was busy with scholarship applications, cross-country, basketball, and track, along with the school musical, Mary Poppins. I applied early decision to Cornell University and was accepted into the CALS program as an Animal Science major. I was encouraged to enter the Senior Record Book contest. Between baccalaureate and graduation I was able to attend a few days of the national

convention in Pennsylvania in 2015. I was interviewed for the Distinguished Ayrshire Youth member and participated in Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl. My first place Senior Record Book was on display. The New York State youth program was very successful at the convention. As a member of a 4-H third generation family, I participate in many projects because my dad is the 4-H Dairy Cattle Key Leader in the county and my mom is a Family and Consumer Science teacher. I have had the honor of being named Grand Champion Showman, Premier Exhibitor, first-place Herdsman, first-place Stall Decorating, firstplace Outstanding Ayrshire exhibit, and Outstanding Dairy Member. The 10 years of Dairy Bowl meetings has taught me a great deal about nutrition, breeds, dairy products, and feeds and forages. For four years I have been the 4-H Dairy Cattle Junior Leader and recently the 4-H Dairy Cattle Clover Bud Club assistant. I love working with the younger members at fair and teaching them what they need to know. Many fair awards demonstrate my success in numerous areas. I have been awarded the 4-H Citizen of the Year, 4-H Junior Leader of the Year, 4-H Royalty and am a member of the 4-H Family of the Year. One of our biggest honors is being selected as the first place Open Colored Breed Herdsman at the 2012 and 2013 New York State Fairs. Many of my exhibits such as “got Ayrshires,” Ayrshirepardy and Farm Safety were part of the winning displays. Since my career plan is to return to the family farm, I have a vested interest in our farm, Maple View Dairy. I assist with artificial insemination, breeding records, reading bull proofs and selecting sires for my 4-H animals and for the herd. I play a major part with the tillage, planting and harvesting of the crops on our 300-acre farm. During the school year I work 15 hours a week and during vacations about 60 hours a week on the farm. I do not get paid; mom and dad call it room and board. I also work with Farm Bureau for the Ag in the Classroom project by reading to second graders and telling them about life on a farm. (They have a lot of questions.) Just as farmers years ago were taught to help your neighbor and treat your community with respect, I volunteer for many school and community activities. As one of the few youth members in our church, I perform multiple roles. I am an acolyte, greeter, communion server, scripture reader, choir member and assist community dinners and outreach programs. Since the Somerset Masons #639 F. & A.M. are such a service-

orientated group, I enjoy helping give back as I deliver poinsettias to widows, help serve at dinners and breakfass, and ring the bell for the Red Kettle. This group was very kind to my grandmother who became a widow at a young age. The Lions Club is another group I give back to, as I help serve and perform at their breakfasts and am a guest speaker at their dinners. I discovered at a young age that I enjoy performing and have had major roles in the school musical. I play trumpet in concert and jazz band, which has won gold performance awards. I sing in Concert Choir and Men’s Choir and am an Area All-State vocalist. I also am a three-varsity sport captain and scholarathlete. Presently I hold the school record for three point shots in basketball and a member of the New York State Cross Country Champion Runner-Up team. Recently my teacher asked me to join the town Historical Committee. I enjoy learning about antique farm equipment and presently am cataloging and labeling it for the future as a youth board member. I also created a cow chip bingo contest at the annual farm festival. I am passionate about dairy farming. Every farmer’s goal is to produce more milk. My goal is to return to our family-owned dairy farm and share the same character traits that were instilled in me. Responsibility, discipline, and a good work ethic, are all attributes that people need to become successful. I feel it is my responsibility to teach others about the vital role that the dairy industry plays in today’s society while incorporating those traits. My career goal is to graduate from Cornell University majoring in Animal Science. As a college graduate, I plan on following our legacy and bringing back new technology that can be implemented on our 105-year old farm as a fifth generation farmer. My family and farm life has sculpted me into a wellrounded individual with goals that I am ready to achieve. My senior quote by Og Mandino states, “Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later.”

Queen’s Corner

Hello fellow Ayrshire breeders! I would like to start off by congratulating everyone on their All-American nominations; the hours of preparations for shows and your hard work at home have paid off! As we start off a new year, I would like to remind all the junior members about the due dates for our youth contests. Entries for the record book are due March 1st. The display board, photo, and the queen contest entries are due June 1st. Ladies, I strongly encourage you to participate in the queen contest. It is absolutely an amazing experience and a great way to be involved and to interact with breeders and board members. If anyone has any questions about youth contests please do not hesitate to email me at leannev@okstate.edu I would like to highlight a little on the busy fall show season that I had being your Ayrshire Queen. I started off with my first trip to Harrisburg in September, which I have to say was an absolutely amazing time with my

mom and Kailey. I was extremely impressed on the emphasis the show put on the youth and the quality of the cattle that were shown. I had the opportunity of meeting a few new people and realizing that for some people it is just as hard to travel south west as it is for me to travel north, especially to Pennsylvania which happens to be nowhere near Oklahoma but definitely worth the while (sweet tea being almost non-existent was a little of a surprise). We all get excited when we hear the words “colored shavings” am I correct? Well this year was a totally different experience for me since I did not only show but help with the award presentations. Being prepared takes on a whole new meaning. Being able to stand in the ring the whole time allowed me to never miss a beat which I could not ask for more. World Dairy Expo was definitely one that I will never forget. Louisville was a whole new experience this year and I have to say that it was not only

because I was Queen but also because my mom did not attend. Not only did we lose our main cook, we lost a washer, b e d d e r , motivator, someone who makes us all laugh and a dowhatever-needsto-be-done mom. Gene, Patrick and I really could tell the difference. All I can say is that we are glad to have you on deck for Fort Worth. The youth meeting had a good turn out and I was impressed on the amount of juniors who did attend. I encourage all of you to attend next year for our “John Deere Green” shirts. Until next time, Leanne Van der Laan Reigning National Ayrshire Queen

Understanding Linear Traits

By David Kendell, ST Genetics

For most purebred dairy cattle producers the emphasis in the classification is on final score. For many final score is a marketing tool and a way to compare one herd with another herd. In addition final score presents the impression to breeders of being able to see improvement from one generation to another. However the most important role that classification plays is in providing genetic evaluations on specific traits. Classification results are converted into Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) that can tell us if a bull sires tall daughters that are narrow in the chest; or if he sires shallow udders with strong fore udders that are also weak in udder support; or if a bull sires a straight leg when viewed from the side on a strong pastern but his daughters severely hock in when viewed from the rear. When you read the Type evaluation for a bull you will see numbers for the individual traits expressed as PTAs. For instance Bull A is -1 for Stature, Bull B is 0 for Stature and Bull C is +1 for Stature. Intuitively you could conclude that on average Bull A’s daughters will be shorter than Bull B and Bull C’s daughters, and Bull C’s daughters would be taller than Bull A and Bull B’s daughters if bred to the same cow. But what do the numbers mean? The PTAs for each trait are presented as Standard Deviations from the Breed Average for that trait. The average is recalculated at every base change. The current base year is cows born in 2010. Logically you would expect that half the breed would be above average and half below average or that an January/February 2016

average bull would have a PTA of 0. In this case a +1 for Stature indicates a bull’s average daughter, when that bull is bred to the average cow in the breed, will be taller than 84% of the breed: it does not tell you in absolute terms how tall the daughter will be. This point can be confusing. The first thought that comes into breeder’s minds when they see a +1 for stature is that it means the daughters will be 1 inch taller or some other similar unit. I think it is easier to think about our PTAs for linear traits as ranking percentile rather than a direct measure. From this perspective you can think of a bull that is +1 for a trait as being 84% percentile for that trait. (Note we present Milking Speed in a different fashion with 100 being average and 5 points either way for each Standard Deviation, the older I get the more I like that approach. Many countries present their type and management evaluations in such a fashion. I think it is easier for producers to understand that system and not over react to negative numbers such we see in Stature, Strength, Thurl Width, Body Depth, etc. ) The next complexity to think about when looking at linears is if a positive number always what you want? In Milk, Fat, Protein, Productive Life and Fertility, higher numbers are always considered better. But think about those in comparison to Somatic Cell, Sire Calving Ease, Sire Stillbirth, Daughter Calving Ease, and Daughter Stillbirth where lower numbers are better: Higher is not always better! Not too many people will argue that you can ever have too high or wide a rear udder; positive numbers perhaps always better. But

what about Teat Length? Zero is average for a breed in Teat Length, negative numbers indicate shorter teats and positive numbers longer teats; perhaps 0 is not only average but ideal? The same issue arises with: Rump Angle, positive numbers indicate more slope, negative numbers high pins: Rear Legs Side View, positive numbers more set, negative numbers straighter legs: For Teat Placement positive numbers closer, negative numbers wider. Or consider Stature, can you get your Cont. on pg. 29

How Do You Use Info?

We asked Don Gable of Conebella Farm, Elverson, Pennsylvania, a few questions regarding his use of bull proofs. They milk 115 cows and have numerous animals on the High-CPI list. When proofs come what’s the first thing you look for? Gable: I look for the top bulls first so I can be using the top genetics. What changes do you look for? Gable: The changes that are most important to me are the top genomic bulls so if there are new or different ones I can be getting that semen. How quickly do you start looking for the new information & where do you go to get it? Gable: I probably do not think to look as soon as I should when proofs are run, but I get the info from either the Ayrshire website or the Blue Book. 13

animals too tall? Or too Strong/Dairy/Deep Bodied? In closing think about linear type traits as differences from breed average presented as Standard Deviations not as direct measurements. When looking at the numbers consider that the numbers tell you the direction on that trait from breed average, not the absolute value or economic worth. In some cases a negative number might be preferred over a positive number for a corrective mating, in other case a positive number might be preferred. In all cases always ask questions and continue to learn.
