Director’s Remarks By Susan Edwards, Region 1 Retiring Director Remarks

Milestones! Here in the Brandywine Valley in southeast Pennsylvania, where foxhunting, polo and steeplechase racing is a pastime, I extend my sincere hope that you are well and enjoying your Ayrshires with success. Congratulations to the Oklahoma Ayrshire Breeders for a successful Convention and National Sale. A milestone was reached by Oklahoma for our Association Annual Meeting history by inviting us further south into the American West. After an organizational meeting in 1875 in Albany, New York, our annual meeting did not venture west of the Ohio River until June 1, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio, where only the Executive Committee met because of wartime restrictions on travel. Though we met in Sacramento, California in 1962 and Hutchinson, Kansas in 1969, Oklahoma brought us into a new territory this year and we thank them for their hospitality. Our next venture as an Association, and my invitation to you, as members and Ayrshire enthusiasts, is the 2016 WORLD AYRSHIRE CONFERENCE, to be held from September 20th until October 9th, 2016 in the United States. Please don’t miss this opportunity to meet Ayrshire breeders from around the world to share ideas and visions for the future of the Ayrshire breed. Please refer to the ABA website for details of the schedule, fees and deadlines. When you ask why, I can only give some of my personal reflections. A smile comes to my face when I think of those many years ago, when Mother loved to have dinner parties with family and friends, and inevitably , she took the captive audience, including my siblings and I, to watch her extensive slideshow of our parents’ world travels with Ayrshire friends. There was a Breeders’ Tour to Great Britain in 1966, the World Ayrshire Conference to Lahti, Finland followed by visits to 13 Great Britain farms in 1972 and Colombia, South America, etc. Therefore, when the World Conference came to the U.S. a few years later and we hosted dinner for the visitors here at the farm, I knew several of them and their Ayrshires from Mother and Dad and their stories. It was so interesting and great fun when some of them stayed for long visits. This year, three phases have been planned for the World Conference, as the group travels by coach across the United States. The tour begins on September 20th in Springfield, Massachusetts, site of the first ABA annual meeting following organization on January 20, 1876. Your visit there includes the Eastern States Exposition and National Ayrshire Show where the historical grounds and exhibits exude the charm and colonial past of New England. Going west into upstate New York, stopping at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Sunny Acres Farm and the Evans Family will be your host for the evening meal. Phase II touches onto the Amish Community in eastern Pennsylvania and a wonderful opportunity to visit S&M Ayr Farm, owned by Susie and Mike Zook and family, who are always gracious in sharing their Ayrshire herd and Amish lifestyle. On the 25th, the Maulfair family will kindly host lunch at their beautiful farm that includes an outstanding Ayrshire and Holstein herd. Dinner will be hosted by the Gable family of Conebella Farm. September 26th takes you into Maryland, home of the “Preakness,” a visit to the famous Sagamore Thoroughbred Farm giving you a golden opportunity to witness the intricacies of the sport of Kings. Palmyra Farm, breeder of the outstanding Ayrshire sire of our time, “Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette-ET,” and their legendary herd of distinction will host your evening meal. Traveling west, the Wolf family of Ohio and the Borchardt family, Family-Af-Ayr Farm, of Illinois will be your generous hosts. Phase III will center all of their events from the Kalahari Resort in the Dells of Wisconsin. Ayrshire herds with the Ullmer, Busch and Hazeltine families as your generous hosts for meals will highlight the event. World Ayrshire Federation meetings will be held at the Kalahari Resort on September 30th and October 1st followed by the 2016 World Ayrshire Conference Embryo Sale and on October 7th, the World Ayrshire Event Sale following the International Ayrshire Show at World Dairy Expo. If your time is limited, please try to attend an event to meet our guests as you are their American host. ~Susan Edwards By Tom Gillette, Region 1 Director Remarks

Breeder Friendly Tools to upgrade Production In order to become more productive, the Ayrshire breed needs to improve its image for milk production. Many Ayrshire cows have made outstanding records of 30,000 and 40,000 pounds of milk. However, the overall breed average also needs to increase. On the world stage the demand for 100% U.S. Ayrshires is strong. Cont on pg. 21

ABA Award Presentations

As presented by Becky Payne, Executive Director at the Annual Meeting he ABA has three awards that are presented each year to three very special and deserving people. I don’t always get to make all of the presentations, but this year I’m especially honored for this responsibility as I love and respect each of them. All three rise to the top in much the same way. They are all especially humble. They all appreciate the Ayrshire people who paved the way ahead of them. They all love this Ayrshire breed in their own way and continue to give back for the betterment of the breed and the Ayrshire family of people. I truly don’t think I know of any time where any of them have ever turned me down when I asked for help in some way on behalf of Ayrshire. That is very special.

Young Breeder Award

Like all families, we take great pride in recognizing and encouraging young Ayrshire enthusiasts. The recipient of this year’s honor is someone that I have truly enjoyed getting to know. The longer I have known her, the more I respect her. Jessica Gatton Dixon got her start in the Ayrshire breed just 18 years ago with her parents when Ayrshires were introduced into their Holstein operation in Crane, Missouri. Since that time, she married Brett, and they started their Stil Dreamn Dairy located in Southwest Missouri. They milk around 70 head with an average classification score of 88 points. The dominant breed is Ayrshire with the remaining split evenly between Guernseys and Holsteins. The herd is really excelling on their grazing program with a rolling herd average over 16,000 pounds of milk. They do supplement with corn silage in the winter as well as wrapped rye grass and soudex. Jessica gets an awful lot accomplished during some long days as the primary caretaker of the dairy with Brett also having a job off the farm. With no hired help, this couple has learned the art of juggling. In addition to being mommy to nearly 3-year-old Diesel, Jessica also serves as a DHIA tester once a month for a large commercial dairy in Missouri. I told

Jessica one day that I’m a Facebook stalker on her page. I just love seeing the pictures and videos she posts of Diesel. You can see that she and Brett are instilling their love of the dairy industry in him. Jessica is very inspirational in her devotion to the Ayrshire cow. She has worked hard during her term on the ABA board of directors to always carry questions and comments from her fellow constituents to the board meetings. She has been a leader on the state level as well, serving as secretary and helping plan the upcoming 2018 national convention being hosted by Missouri. I asked Jessica’s good friend Cindy Wilson if there are any qualities about Jessie that maybe we don’t know. She laughed good naturedly and said, “Well, she does love high heels even though she hardly ever gets to wear them.” Jessica is always quick to promote and give credit to the Ayrshire cow for being profitable. She always states how profitable our breed can be, and backs up her statements with examples in her own herd. She has openly stated that if it weren’t for the Ayrshire cow, she would not still be in the dairy business. If you look at the cows that Jessica and Brett market and promote, you can see that longevity is key in this herd. This is another key testimonial for

Distinguished Service Award

The recipient of the Distinguished Service Award is Lynn Lee of Smyrna, Tennessee. Lynn has been involved with the ABA Board for 15 years, serving three terms as a director, one term as vice president and one term as president. His years of experience as a type evaluator have served the Ayrshire breed very well with him chairing the classification committee for many years. Lynn Lee has been a true steward of the breed. He has the ability to get his point across in a light hearted way without being insulting. During Lynn’s presidency, we really were at a cross roads. We’d come out of a hard-fought law suit before his term, and he had to find a way to bridge the gap between factions of breeders. At the same time, we weren’t stacking up very well against other breeds for some very key management traits. He and I worked together to compile as much information as we could to document these facts. In typical Lynn Lee fashion, he stated

ABA President Jim Tentinger (left) presented the Ayrshire Distinguished Service Award to Lynn Lee

to our membership that “if our butts were as narrow as our minds, we could all fit into the front pew at church.” The statement got a laugh, while also making people very aware

their herd and our breed. Jessica openly proclaims her belief that this breed is profitable, and our own breeders need to work harder at marketing this attribute. Please join me in congratulating Jessica Gatton Dixon with the 2016 Ayrshire Young Breeder Award.

of our status as a breed. Lynn has done a tremendous service to the Ayrshire breed in widening our circle of new breeders and enthusiasts in this industry. As he traveled across the country with his work auctioneering dairy sales and also as a classifier, Lynn would visit as many Ayrshire herds as possible in his path. There is no way to gauge the value of this field service, but I can tell you that it established an awful lot of good will. Lynn always calls me and recounts all that he learned so that I can try to follow up on the business side. This is truly distinguished service. In one of our conversations recently, I asked Lynn what it was that made him want to run for Director. He said it was because he respected the others so much who came before him. He said, “When I came on the Ayrshire board, the board was respected. It was a coat and tie affair. It was business with others who had class and character, like Raymond Jarratt, David Patrick, Doug Murray, Jim Patsos and Steve McDonald. That’s something I wanted

Master Breeder Award

The 2016 Master Breeder Award is being presented to Darryl Keehner of Guttenberg, Iowa. As a master breeder, Darryl took some calculated risks in his breeding program over the years that paid off for him and benefitted the Ayrshire breed. When I asked about what made him think outside the box, Darryl said, “At the years leading into my dispersal, when I looked at my cows, there was a lot of Milkman, Trident and BBBK, sometimes on both sides of the pedigree. Calimero had already been accepted as a percentage bull, so it didn’t feel like a big deal to me to venture out into some of the percentage genetics available. I always paid attention to maintain the 87% Ayrshire status. The success of this was to maintain or increase milk production. The failure was that some people want 100%, so that did eliminate a very small portion of the market share.” Darryl believes in using young sires, and would encourage all to try at least 25%. With genomics today, that can help eliminate some of the guess work of using young sires. Darryl said if he had to give advice to people on things to do to keep your herd progressing, he would talk to the classifiers and see if there’s an exceptional cow out there that could provide outlier genetics. He would ask guys who see a lot of cows that he trusts, such as Lynn Lee, Neal Smith and Steve McDonald, to give him ideas on what’s working out there. Maybe we could even encourage every state to nominate a cow that might be a bull mama. Darryl’s favorite and most consistent cow family is Sharwards Cornelius Dandy, EX-90 with over 266,000 pounds of milk lifetime. Dandy’s daughter, Modem Demi, was Dist. Serv. cont. from prev. page

to be a part of.” Lynn said it was time to get others to step up. The way the industry is going, there will have to be more groups working together. We will have to care enough and be proud enough of the Ayrshire breed to survive and thrive.” In true style of the type of people we’re honoring tonight, when I talked to Darryl Keehner, he had better quotes for me on others than himself, saying “I believe Lynn Lee does what’s best for the Ayrshire breed in everything he does.” I can’t think of any better way to sum this up. Those kinds of thoughts are just small snippets of what makes Lynn Lee the man he is and the reason we are honoring him tonight with the 2016 Ayrshire Distinguished Service Award.

July/August 2016

purchased by Donna Mertz in the dispersal sale. Demi’s Dreamer son, Dante, is now available at Select Sires. This gives him great pleasure, and he explains saying, “One of the most satisfying things as a breeder is for people to tell you they’re happy with the cows you bred.” Others carrying the Sharwards prefix have been noteworthy in recent years. Sharwards Calimero Megan is owned by the Megan Syndicate of Iowa. She scored EX-94 2E, has records over 28,000M and is a four-time AllAmerican. Sharwards Ashlyn, EX-92 2E, won the Rodriguez & Skiff Memorial Trophy last year for Damian Ullmer with a record over 41,000M in 305 days. Darryl worked hard to balance production and type in his herd. He explained that over the years, he’d go two generations of good solid production. Then on the third generation, he could come back with more type, although he never liked using a bull negative for type regardless of how good his production was. He said that Burdette was awesome because he had both. I did ask Darryl to share his master breeder thoughts on the question I get daily… “What should I breed my Burdettes to?” Darryl responded that he thinks we’re beginning another cycle much like he faced when he decided to try some of the SRB genetics. We’ll have to work hard to find some great outcrosses. Darryl has always been a source of great fun and inspiration to me personally. I tried to get some good information out of him recently for this presentation, and he provided this perfect example of his personality. He said, “I’m like Elvis… I’m more popular dead than alive.” Darryl and the Sharwards prefix have made an impact on many in the Ayrshire family. Lloyd Machin told me not long ago, “I can tell you where there should have been more bulls taken, and that’s Darryl Keehner.”

ABA Vice President Tom Fenton(left) presented the Ayrshire Master Breeder Award to Darryl Keehner.

Darryl told me that he found many ways to keep himself motivated and educated along the way. He enjoyed browsing the herd average lists to see how he compared to others. He read anything he could find and then tried to apply what might be relevant in his own operation. Darryl also says that he always finds that his family members and other breeders motivate him. He feels fortunate to have had the parents that he did raise him. His parents had Ayrshires, and that got him on the way to staying true to the breed. Darryl is quick to point out that the Ayrshire cow made him money, and profit drove his business. He had a farm to pay for and a family to raise, and he did it all with Ayrshires with their longevity, positive feed conversion and low somatic cell count. The Sharwards prefix began in the beginning with his parents. His mother’s name was Sharon and his father was Howard, therefore the Sharwards prefix. Please join me in congratulating Darryl Keehner for receiving the 2016 Master Breeder Award.

U.S. Ayrshire Breeders Foundation The US Ayrshire Breeders’ Foundation reported exciting news at the National Ayrshire Convention in Oklahoma City, OK on Thursday, June 16, 2016. The Foundation, still in its infancy, has received $53,800 in donations from individuals and businesses, and has a current fund balance over $61,000. The committee announced that three grants will be awarded in 2016. The University of West Virginia will receive $3,000 for an Ayrshire research project. The study will involve comparing feed efficiencies of Ayrshires and Holsteins in the University’s dairy herd. They will also analyze DHIA test day data from herds with both Ayrshires and Holsteins to document competitiveness between breeds. The study will take approximately two years to complete. The Foundation will award $2,500 for the 2016 World Ayrshire Conference. Specifically the funds will be used to sponsor parts of the business and education sessions to be held on September 30-October 1, 2016 in the Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. A grant of $1,000 will be awarded to the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association for the continued advancement of Ayrshire genomics testing. In its reorganization meeting following the ABA’s annual meeting, the committee elected Neal Smith of Smyrna, Tennessee to serve as chairman for the next year. Sharon Tentinger of Remsen, Iowa will continue as treasurer. John Rodgers, Belleville, Pennsylvania; John Dalton, Hartland, Wisconsin and Doug Fenton, Winchester, Ohio round out the committee. 7

he 2016 Grand National Sale was held on June 17th in Oklahoma City, at the state fairgrounds on a hot 106°F evening. The sale averaged $2,150 on 50 live lots in the air conditioned arena. With a wonderful lineup of cattle all the way through and some solid and great pedigrees, there was much anticipation and interest in the sale cattle. Cowbuyer.com was also on hand to provide live bidding. Topping the sale was a heifer who had been advertised in the Digest and sold as lot 25. Onward Predator Adina-ET, the Reserve Junior Champion and second-place Spring Yearling at the 2016 Ft. Worth Stock Show, sold for $8,700. Creating a lot of buzz during the week prior to the sale, this fancy, well ballanced, end-of-April Spring Yearling was purchased by Linda and Leslie Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland. Dir. cont. from pg. 4

The good news is, U.S. Ayrshire breeders have several new tools to work with. We have established the Ayrshire Foundation which I believe has great potential to advance the breed, with both grants to youth programs and genetics. Several of these grants are underway currently. Genomics is now a reality for the Ayrshire breed. Embryo transfer and sexed semen are not new, but should be used more extensively. Your Ayrshire Breeders’ Association (A.B.A.) board has made changes to the records and classification programs to make them more breeder friendly. Sexed semen is not new but very underutilized. Think of the progress your herd could make if the top half of your herd

all had heifer calves! The area of dairy nutrition has made huge gains in recent years. As a result, herd averages have the potential to make large increases. If your herd is below average for production, talk to a dairy nutritionist about a well-balanced T.M.R. (total mixed ration) for your herd. Milk production is the result of multigene hereditary. The total of many genes is the inherited ability of an animal to produce milk. Predicted difference milk (P.D.M.) is the number we have come to know as the milk proof of our A.I. sires. What P.D.M. says in population genetics is that a +500 pound bull will move the average of his daughters 500 pounds to the right on a bell curve of his daughters. Likewise a bull that is minus 500 pounds will move the curve

500 pounds to the left. With more and more plus proven A.I. Ayrshire bulls available, it is time to take advantage of this genetic tool to improve the Ayrshire cow’s milk production across the breed. The question is how much will these new tools get used in our herds? If they are only used by a few progressive breeders, the benefit will be very limited. I realize that not all of these tools will fit every operation. However, for the Ayrshire cow to become recognized as the great cow I truly believe she is, all breeders should use as many of these much needed tools as possible. This new breeder friendly technology is the key for the advancement of both your herd and the Ayrshire breed. ~ Tom Gillette

Annual Meeting Report Columbus, OH - The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association had a successful convention in Oklahoma City, OK hosted by the Oklahoma Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. President Jim Tentinger presided over the annual meeting which was held Thursday, June 16, 2016. The Association reported a slight decrease in registrations and transfers for the past year, as well as a decrease in net assets of $535. Three new directors were elected to serve on the ABA Board of Directors: Region 1 – Cindy Crawford of Whiting, VT; Region 2 – Rhonda Patrick-Winkler of Woodbine, MD; and Region 3 – Janet Jarratt of Los Lunas, NM. Mark Kortus of Lynden, WA was the recipient of two awards for his cow, Mainstream Real Bethany, EX-92. “Bethany” was

awarded Ayrshire Trophy for the highest actual 305-day record with over 4.0% fat and the Total Performance Award based on energy corrected milk, final score, bred and owned, and net merit. She made 38,5500M (43,984 ECM) 4.7% 1,822F 2.8% 1,081P in 305-days at 4-05. Dakota Hall and Leanne Vanderlaan of Cushing, OK were the recipients of the Rodriguez and Skiff Memorial Trophy for their cow, Muellers BBBK Calista, who made the highest actual 305-day milk record. “Calista” produced 38,790M 2.9% 1,125F 3.4% 1,306P at 8-05. Family-Af-Ayr Farm LLC of Caledonia, IL was awarded the Living Lifetime Production Award for Family-Af-Ayr Kellogg Lacey-ET. Her lifetime record is 230,750M 3.3% 7,696F 2.9% 6,760P.

Genomic Testing Goes Mainstream to Commercial Dairy Herds By Todd Bilby, Ph.D., dairy technical services manager, Merck Animal Health

Advances in genomic testing create new opportunities for commercial dairy producers to have more control over their herds’ profit potential. With an abundance of available replacement heifers, producers have the ability to replace less profitable cows with genetically superior heifers, shortening the generation interval and accelerating the genetic progress. Genomic testing offers a powerful screening tool to predict what heifer will be a top performer and which will be below average. The payoff can be big, as investing money toward feeding and housing heifers that are not going to contribute to the bottom line only narrows profit margins. Technology advancements make testing affordable Once a tool only affordable for dairy producers owning elite dairy herds to identify the best bull mothers, genomic testing is now cost effective on a large-scale basis. Costs have fallen dramatically since genomic testing first hit the market in 2008, and it is now possible to test for as low as $28 per head or approximately 1 percent of the cost to raise a heifer. Managing genomic information to find genetically inferior calves is quite simple. Dairy producers select a key indicator, such as the predicted transmitting ability (PTA) of net merit dollars (NM$) which estimates the expected lifetime profit of a cow compared to the breed base of an average cow born and raised in the same environment. NM$ include traits that capture an economic impact, such as milk yield, health, longevity, fertility and calving ease. If a heifer does not meet the minimum requirements for NM$, she could be sold prior to breeding. A heifer that ranks high in NM$ might be a candidate for sexed semen. Keeping the calves with the best genetics and applying sexed semen, while selling calves with the poorest genetics, can deliver substantial cost savings. Ultimately, producers realize value by collecting the NM$ information at an early age, allowing them to gain an understanding of how profitable the animal will be as a lactating cow.

How it works Genomics got its start in 2004 with the sequencing of the bovine genome, which is made up of approximately 25,000 useful genes. Sequencing allowed basic information about genetic coding to be used to improve how genetic values of cattle are estimated. For genomic selection, researchers look for markers or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A SNP is a place in a chromosome where the DNA sequence can differ among individuals. SNPs are most useful when they occur close to a gene that contributes to an important trait. Most traits are controlled by many genes, making this a very complex process. Significant progress was made when a genotyping computer chip was developed that could identify more than 50,000 SNPs (50K test) on the genome. Genomics has rapidly advanced in the past decade. Today most laboratories use custom chips that are able to use fewer SNPs through the use of imputation. Imputation is a method that uses knowledge of the parental genome in calculations to predict the genotype of the calf. The Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) maintains the genomic database and produces a genomic evaluation report on a weekly basis containing data on every animal. Producers can take a tissue sample from a calf and submit it to a laboratory, which then sends the genotype to the CDCB. The CDCB then calculates PTAs that are equal to progeny tests on many daughters of sires. While the reports contain extensive data, most dairy producers prefer to use simple rankings, such as Net Merit, Cheese Merit or Fluid Merit. For those who like more details, reports can be run to work with custom-made indexes. For more information on Ayrshire genomics contact the ABA at 614.335.0020.
