Director’s Remarks By Mark Valentine, Director Region 2

While debating what to make these remarks about, I thought, you know, I could try to debate great bulls, or the merits of genomics over traditional selection, strategies to keep afloat in a struggling economy and so on. But above all those things and more, I have been bothered lately by some of the trends I have seen happening not only in our industry, but in our country. Whether you are in this business to show or milk, have a herd of one or thousands, work on a farm or own your own, the fact is we are all in this together. Every one of us is different. We all have individual goals for our operations, our future and our Ayrshires; but the one thing that remains the same is the desire for success and to see our breed prosper. From choosing different bulls, feeding different rations, appreciating certain attributes more than others, we are not going to agree with each other, as generally happens when you get so many passionate people together. And ya know what? That is OK. I don’t need to agree with you to value your opinion. I don’t need to use the same techniques to see how they work for you. We just need to open our minds and stop criticizing. Keep in mind that we are not only repersenting ourselves, but the Ayrshire breed in most everything we do. The amount of diversity from farm to farm just goes to show the adaptability of our breed. If our cow can be flexible and accomodating, why should we be any less? I’m going to leave you with these words, and I want you to really hear them. This is a reminder I need in my life and think can be helpful in others. Read them twice and think about what legacy you are leaving behind… Hold the door, say please and thank you Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie, I know you got mountains to climb but Always stay humble and kind When the dreams you’re dreaming come to you When the work put in is realized Let yourself feel the pride But always stay humble and kind. Don’t expect a free ride from no one Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why Bitterness keeps you from flyin’ Always stay humble and kind . ~ Tim McGraw

Oklahoma City Beckons….

T

hroughout the week, opportunities will be available to explore all that Oklahoma City has to offer. Be sure to take advantage of these times and tours to delve into the rich culture and history that this beautiful city offers! Located on the north side of downtown, The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum teaches the lessons learned and the hope that rose from the April 19, 1995 domestic terrorist bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Start inside with the Memorial Museum, and then head outside to the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial to reflect on the powerful experience of the museum exhibits and artifacts. Also, be sure to swing back by at night to see the beautiful Outdoor Symbolic Memorial in a whole new light. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is located in the heart of the downtown Arts District. Its permanent collection consists of European and American art, as well as the most comprehensive collection of Chihuly glass in the world. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the 55 foot tall Chihuly glass tower in the atrium at the front of the museum. Grab lunch at their gourmet café and swing by the gift shop for some fun and funky souvenirs. If you are in town on Thursday night be sure to check out “Cocktails on the Skyline”, where you can grab a cocktail on the museum rooftop from 5pm-10pm. Myriad Gardens’ 17-acre living plant museum makes your senses come alive with bright blooms, bubbling fountains and lush foliage. The gardens and conservatory received a $38 million makeover in 2011, including a new LED lighting system that illuminates the entire “tube” at night with a beautiful array of colors. Other new additions include a Children’s Garden, a grand event lawn, special event pavilion, restaurant and activity plaza, a dog release area, and

numerous water features that provide a dynamic energy to this downtown space. Start inside the conservatory, but be sure to leave plenty of time to walk the entire grounds. The American Banjo Museum is a good place to start your exploration of the Bricktown Entertainment District. Even if pickin’ and grinnin’ isn’t your thing, seeing the beauty of these instruments and learning their uniquely American history is worth the stop. See over 300 banjos on display, as well as interpretive exhibits that tell the story of the banjo from its humble roots in American slavery to its modern day roles in bluegrass, folk and world music. Check the museum’s website for dates of live performances and special concerts. After you leave whistling from the American Banjo Museum, it’s time to paint the town (brick) red in Bricktown. Once a busy warehouse area, Bricktown is Oklahoma City’s hottest entertainment and dining district. Grab dinner at one of the numerous restaurants and then take a water taxi ride along the mile-long Bricktown Canal. If you’d rather keep walking, skip the water taxi and stroll along the mile-long pedestrian canal, lined with canal-side restaurants, nightclubs and shops. The canal ends in Lower Bricktown, where you can see the Oklahoma Land Run Monument. When complete, the sculpture-in-progress will feature 45 heroic (life and one-half size) figures of land run participants, frozen in motion as they race to claim new homesteads. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum preserves and embodies the histories and cultures of the American West, part of the nation’s identity and heritage. Explore the vast, diverse history and artistry of the American West through fine art and artifacts, educational classes and demonstrations. The museum is large, making it possible to spend

several hours or return for additional visits. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are boosted by a variety of events, including the annual Western Family Weekend and National Day of the American Cowboy. Each summer, visitors delight in a prestigious contemporary art exhibition and sale known as Prix de West. The Boathouse District along the Oklahoma River offers some of Oklahoma City’s more popular ways to spend time outdoors, enjoy views of the downtown skyline and get active. Located within walking distance of the hotels and restaurants of the Bricktown Entertainment District, the Boathouse District is the focal point for OKC RIVERSPORT’s rowing, kayaking, running, cycling and fitness programs. Visitors can rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and water bicycles and check out dragon boating. They can zip across the Oklahoma River and back on the SandRidge SkyZip or climb the six-story SandRidge Sky Trail and Slide, an 80-foot adventure course to be climbed while safely fastened in with a harness. Getting down requires sliding down the Sky Slide or dropping via the Rumble Drop. RIVERSPORT Rapids is a new 11-acre whitewater rafting and kayaking center. This state-of-the-art aquatic adventure facility will be geared for both family fun and elite athlete training, adding even more outdoor recreation opportunities to the list. The Youth Zone packs in plenty of adventure for the younger set – the Sky Tykes adventure course, the Cloud Bounce, a miniature zip line and the Extreme Air bungee. The Boathouse District playground is free. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes in order to enjoy these activities.

Queen’s Corner

Hello everyone! As I write to you for the last time as your National Ayrshire Queen, I can tell you that I have had an amazing year representing the Ayrshire breed as your queen. I highlighted my reign of queen in the last issue so I’ll keep this one pretty simple. I would love to welcome all of you to Oklahoma for the National Convention that is coming up pretty soon. We have an exciting week laid out and a great lineup of sale cattle. All of the tours we have lined up are pretty amazing. I know seeing the word ‘museum’ can be tiring, but the Western Museum isn’t one to miss. I really hope to see a good turnout of youth for the judging contest we are putting together which will be a great opportunity to see some wonderful cattle. I cannot wait to see ya’ll there and I want to wish everyone coming to Oklahoma a safe trip!

~ Leanne Van der Laan, Reigning National Ayrshire Queen

2016 Record Book Winners Beginner (Age 8 & Under) Winner Hunter Offer is the sixyear-old son of John and Shauna Offer of FoggyValley Farm, Auburndale, Wisconsin. Hunter has been a Junior Member of the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association for one year, and has completed two years of project work with his Ayrshires. He owns three registered Ayrshire calves and four cows in partnership, two of which he bred. Hunter attends Grant Elementary in Marshfield, Wisconsin and when he grows up, he wants “to be a farmer like my Dad and Grandpa.” Ayrshires have been in Hunter’s family for 64 years. Hunter has three favorite cows that he helps to milk; Jolly Rancher, Zoey and Nakita. Hunter is in Kountry Kids 4-H club and likes to attend shows and Ayrshire meetings and picnics. He is also involved with T-ball, Sunday School, his county Holstein club, and youth bowling. He has two younger brothers, Peyton and Tanner. Juniors (ages 9-12) Winner Andrew Curtis Szalach is nine years old and the son of Joseph and Diana Curtis Szalach. They hail from Cedarcut Farm of Cazenovia, New York. Andrew has been a Junior Member for four years and owns one Registered Ayrshire calf and two cows. When he grows up, he wants his own farm with Ayrshire cows and Case IH tractors. Andrew attends Burton Street Elementary, where he is in the third grade. He has an older sister, Erin, and a younger brother, Ryan. Andrew was given his first Ayrshire calf, Cedarcut Burdette Cali Cherry, from his grandfather in 2012. Andrew picked out the bulls for Cherry’s two calves, a Poker and a Homerun. The Homerun was Andrew’s very first homebred Ayrshire heifer, and he named her Emily. “Being in the barn is the best,” says Andrew. He does a variety of chores, including feeding heifers, calves, and milking. “My very favorite chore in the barn is to clean it,” he says. Andrew enjoys showing and is looking forward to showing an Ayrshire calf this year. This is his first year as a 4-H member. “I’ve been waiting a long time to be old enough to show at all the shows my family goes to,” he says. He is now the Club Reporter for his 4-H club, Caz, Cows & Clovers. Andrew is also a Wolf Scout and a very active member

of the New York Junior Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. He names the farm as “the best place on Earth.” Runner-Up Whitney Dunklee is the 10-year-old daughter of Jeff and Kelli Dunkle of Vernon, Vermont. Kelli has been a Junior Member for six years and owns four Ayrshire heifers and four cows. She is a fifth-grader at Vernon Elementary School. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Whitney lives on Vern-Mont Farm, where they milk 575 head of mostly Holsteins. Her favorite chore is feeding the calves. She also cleans hutches and feeds grain and hay. Whitney is also learning to milk and watch for cows coming into heat. Whitney received her first Ayrshire, NVArrowhead Doris, when she was four years old. She was taught by a nutritionist how to raise Doris for the show ring. “Teaching Doris to lead helped mold me into the cowgirl I am today,” says Whitney. “I think I have been hooked on farming and showing ever since Doris and I made our first circle around the ring.” Whitney likes to breed for power and depth, and has been successful before, placing second at the Vermont State Show and placing first in showmanship at the Vermont Ayrshire Junior Show two years in a row. Whitney is Vice-President of her Solids, Stripes and Spots 4-H Club. She plans to attend the World Dairy Expo and World Ayrshire Conference in Madison. She also serves on her school’s Student Council, plays in the band, jumps rope, participates in Theater Club, plays recreation basketball and is part of the Red Cross Aquatic Program. She has done charity work for Little Hands of Hope, the county Humane Society, Project Feed the Thousands and Ann’s Kitchen. Adam Wolf is the 11-yearold son of Tim and Erica Wolf of Shreve, Ohio. He attends Shreve Elementary School and owns five Ayrshire calves and two cows. He has been a Junior Member for five years. Adam’s father is the herdsman for Spring-Run Farms. Adam himself would like to be a farmer someday. Although he doesn’t live on the farm, he and his sisters go to work there every morning. Adam feeds the bottle calves each morning and evening and also helps to bed and grain. Adam’s first calf was Spring-Run Bingo Marissa, who he showed in Mini Showmanship at his county fair when he was six. This experience sparked an interest in

showing Ayrshires in Adam. Adam attends Dairy Palooza, as well as sessions on selecting projects, showmanship, and fitting; career expo and Skillathon. In 2012, Adam won Mini Showmanship. He also started participating in judging clinics and contests. “At the end of 2013, I received a Silver Dairy Achievement Rating,” says Adam. Adam also enjoys participating at Convention in the Display and Photo contests. “I have enjoyed all my dairy-related events and look forward to next year,” he says. Intermediates (ages 13-15) Winner Erin Nicole Curtis Szalach is the 14-yearold daughter of Joseph and Diana Curtis Szalach of Cazenovia, New York. Erin has been a junior Ayrshire member for seven years and currently owns six Ayrshire cows and three heifers. Erin is in the eighth grade at Cazenovia Central School. On her family’s Cedarcut Farm, Ayrshires are the primary breed, but they also have Holsteins and Brown Swiss. Erin is a member of the New York Junior Ayrshire Club, her state and county junior Holstein clubs, and her county 4-H program. She is also a dairy ambassador for her county. Erin’s favorite breed is the Ayrshire, and her love for them began at age five when she showed her first calf, Cedarcut Prudence Ellie Ember. These days, Erin helps feed calves and heifers and cleans out the barns. She also makes all the mating decisions for her own cows. She helped with the IVF process with her cow Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata, including selecting the sire used and travelling with her to the location where she was aspirated. Erin also helps maintain various records for the farm, including DHI records and registrations. Erin enjoys adding to the herd and has done so through sales as well as being the New York Junior Ayrshire Calf Scholarship Winner in 2009. Her careful planning of sire selection as well as hard work in preparing her animals has led to quite a successful show record. Last year, at age 13, she personally exhibited Colata at the World Dairy Expo where she was Grand Champion! Her favorite shows are those at the New York State Fair and Harrisburg, because she is competing against breeders that are family and friends. Erin plans on going to college after high school to study veterinary medicine and specialize in dairy. “I’m looking forward to continuing my work with my Ayrshires and meeting new people and seeing where Colata takes us!” she says.

Runner Up Joseph Real is the 14-year-old son of Steve and Kristie Real of Georgia, Vermont. He is in the ninth grade at Bellows Free Academy. He plans to study Dairy Science in college and would like to be a custom harvester and cattle fitter upon graduation. Joseph has been a Junior Member for seven years and presently owns two Ayrshire calves and two cows. Joseph was born on the day of the Champlain Valley Fair, where his family received Premier Exhibitor honors. “It seems that it has always been obvious to my family and their friends that I would grow up involved with Ayrshires,” he says. Joseph has lived up to these expectations, having spent the last six summers on his grandparents’ Arrowhead Farm in Milton, Vermont. Arrowhead Farm has been in his family for 73 years. They are a grazing herd with 80 head of Ayrshires, Holsteins and Jerseys. Joseph feeds calves, cleans and beds stalls, waters, mows the lawn, fixes fence, does field work and administers medicine, just to name a few of his variety of chores. He has learned a lot about farming from his grandfather and his uncle. Joseph also enjoys showing purchased and leased calves. His first bred and owned heifer was NV-Arrowhead Snow White, born in September 2011. “My best memories are at the shows with my family, my friends and my cows,” he says. Besides farming and showing, Joseph also enjoys hunting, gardening, 4-H and dairy youth activities. Alexis Diemel is 14 years old and is in the eighth grade at Bonduel Middle School. She is the daughter of Toni and Mike Diemel of Seymour, Wisconsin. Alexis has been a Junior Member for seven years and owns one Ayrshire calf and is a partner on one cow. She would like to own a farm and have a veterinary practice someday. Alexis started showing Ayrshires seven years ago. She currently owns one calf, Lazy M Simbad Dandy, who won her class at the High Protein Show, the Wisconsin State Show and the Wisconsin State Fair in 2015. Alexis then took Dandy to World Dairy Expo, where she placed near the bottom of the class. “This was the toughest competition all year, but the experience was unforgettable,” says Alexis. Besides showing, Alexis also participated in the National Convention in 2015, where she was in the scrapbook contest and photo contest. She plans on entering them both again this year. Alexis is also the Vice-President of her Country Korner 4-H club and is the secretary of her church’s youth group. May/June 2016

Mackensie Schofield is the fifteen-year-old daughter of Wayne and Jennifer Schofield of Happy Acres Dairy in Troy, Maine. She has been a Junior Member for six years and is a freshman at Mt. View High School. Mackensie and her two older sisters, Colleen and Nicole, are largely in charge of their 13-milking-head dairy, due to a parental injury that forced both parents to work off the farm. While they have mostly Holsteins and Jerseys, they also own “four Ayrshire babies.” Mackensie’s favorite chores involve taking care of the calves, including feeding, exercising and managing their health. In 2015, Mackensie purchased Hardy Farm Prime Kaylee from her aunt and uncle. Kaylee went on to be Junior Champion of the junior show at Eastern States, as well as first at the Eastern National junior and open shows. Mackensie is an honors student who is also involved in basketball and is the President of her Little Beavers 4-H club. “Having worked with many breeds over my short life I have really enjoyed working with the Ayrshire breed, and it is something I want to continue to do,” she says. Denice Wolf is a 14-yearold student at Triway High School. She is the daughter of Tim and Erica Wolf of Shreve, Ohio. She has been a Junior Member for 10 years and owns three Ayrshire calves and two cows. Denice shares calf chores with her cousins at Spring-Run Farms. She has a variety of skills and fills in when needed. She also helps her dad milk occasionally. In 2009, Denice was discouraged from showing when her calf broke her arm in Mini Showmanship. She decided she was too small to show, and focused on Quiz Bowl, judging and Skillathon. She has studied in-depth the parts of a cow as well as symptoms, treatment and prevention of diseases. Three years later, she decided to get back in the show ring at the county and state fair. “It felt good to get back into showing and knowing that I can control my animal,” she says. Denice has also participated at six National Ayrshire Conventions, entering the coloring, poster and quiz bowl events. She has also participated in Quiz Bowl, photo and Youth Book contests. She would like to become a math teacher after studying Math and Education in college.

Seniors (ages 16-21) Winner Sara Wolf is the 16-year-old daughter of Tim and Erica Wolf of Shreve, Ohio. She attends Triway High School and has been a Junior Member for nine years. Currently, she owns 10 Ayrshire heifers and nine cows. Sara has many chores on her grandparents’ Spring Run Farms, including taking care of calves and helping her dad milk. “I especially like petting the calves when I’m waiting to do the next job,” she says! In addition to chores, Sara also frequently works with her 4-H calves to get them ready for the county and state fairs. Sara is active in the Ohio Ayrshire Club and enjoys participating in National Convention contests, including the Youth Book contest and the Poster Contest. She is also a long-time dairy judge and quiz bowl participant, and was on the winning Junior Quiz Bowl team at the Wisconsin National Convention. Her activities have taught her how to read pedigrees, understand diseases, identify feeds and know more about the dairy skeletal system. She is a past Ohio Ayrshire Princess and Runner-Up Wayne County Dairy Princess. She participates in Dairy Palooza, which offers workshops on a variety of subjects. Sara enjoys opportunities to teach others about Ayrshires. Two special moments come to mind: first, when she spoke with Ayrshire enthusiasts visiting her farm from Finland; and second, touring her grandmother’s “city cousins” around the farm. Sara would like to study early childhood education and become a nanny. Runner Up Paige Demun is the 18-year-old daughter of Keith and Lisa Demun of Troupsburg, New York. She attends JasperTropusburg Central School, and plans on becoming a large animal veterinarian. Paige has been a Junior Member for seven years and owns four Ayrshire calves and six cows. Paige represents the fourth generation at Fi-De Farms, which is currently owned by her dad, uncle Gary and uncle Martin. She has been showing since she was 17 months old. In 2014 her years of hard work paid off when she was Master Showman at her local fair. Her love for Ayrshires began with her first calf, Christmas Star, born on Christmas day in 2008. Paige was part of the Dairy Princess program, where she promoted dairy products Cont. on pg. 12

at fairs, schools, grocery stores, parades and Farm Days. She has also participated in FFA dairy judging. She plans to attend Cornell University in the fall to study Animal Science. “I hope to one day show at the All-American Dairy Show and World Dairy Expo,” she says. Kristin Allen is 20 years old and is from Gillet, Wisconsin. She is the daughter of Jolene Moeller and Doug Allen. She has been a Junior Member for 13 years and owns five registered Ayrshires, including two in milk. Kristin attends Fox Valley Technical College where she studies Agribusiness and Science Technology. She would like to utilize her studies to develop crop and livestock management programs and business production plans. Her career goal is to own her own show heifer raising facility. Kristin began showing Ayrshires at the age of four. In 2009, she showed at World Dairy Expo for the first time, achieving Reserve Junior Champion with Grand View Sum-Total Divot. Kristin has made several purchases over the past few years to expand her Ayrshires herd. In 2015, she had a memorable year with her heifer Destiny, who was Reserve Junior Champion of the junior and open shows at World Dairy Expo. She also enjoyed taking

her to the Royal Winter Fair and spending time with her mom on the way there. She plans to work full time at Genex/CRI as a Geneiss Production Specialist, where she will take care of ET calves. Previously, Kristin was a member of the Country Korner 4-H club where she participated in a variety of projects. She also enjoys tractor pulling, hunting, RC racing and sewing.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Tylor McCaulley is the 19-year-old son of Teri Curtis of Cazenovia, New York. He attends the State University of New York at Cobleskill, where he studies Agricultural Power and Machinery. He will receive his Associate’s in May 2016, but hopes to pursue a Bachelor’s in this field as well. Tylor plans to find a job working as a mechanic on a dairy that will allow him to also work with cattle. He also plans to continue the Cedarcut farm legacy, “and to have a barn full of homebred, Excellentscored milking Ayrshires.” Tylor is very involved with Ayrshires, and one of his favorite activities is showing them. He describes a “fierce” competition between his sister Kayla and cousin Erin in the show ring. “These memories of competing,

practicing and going to the fairs with my sister and cousin and our Ayrshires will always mean a lot to me,” he says. Tylor’s family has participated at the New York State Fair every year since 1982, and he describes it as a “family affair.” Tylor is very proud of his Ayrshire herd. All seven of Tylor’s milking Ayrshires have scored Excellent. His cow Cedarcut Prudence Caye Cherish is his family’s highest-scoring cow in history at EX-93. He also won a National Production award with Cedarcut KBuck Cella Cathy. Ayrshires mean more than just cows to Tylor. “I also love to be involved with the people and the activities and opportunities that have been offered to me,” he explains. He has participated in Quiz Bowl, Jeopardy and the photo contest at National Convention. He has been the Vice President of the Ayrshire Youth Board and participated in the youth auction. He has also participated in organizing the New York Carousel sale and the “Little Britches” showmanship contest at the state fair. Tylor is active in 4-H as well, and has been the Show Chairman of his club for five years. He also is active in his county Holstein club and has participated in Holstein Jeopardy and Quiz Bowl. He is a member of the Dairy Cattle Club at SUNY Cobleskill and was the Freshman Barn Chairman for the Annual Cattle Sale in 2015.

Promote the best cows and heifers in your herd, along with a color photo for each, pedigree/production information and anything else noteworthy about the animal. The cost is just $100 per animal, or a discounted rate of $75 per cow when you advertise four or more. Every Ayrshire herd in the U.S. should be represented in the Year Book, whether it be your high producers, flush cows, show cows, promising heifers and more! Bulls with semen being marketed may also be advertised in the Yearbook!

The Sixth Annual Ayrshire Yearbook will be published in September in time for the fall national shows. The Yearbook is the perfect way to highlight some of the most prominent and influential Ayrshire females in the breed. It will also be published online at www.usayrshire.com and used for promotional purposes throughout the next 12 months at each event where the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association is represented, including international activities. As we promote the upcoming 2016 World Ayrshire Conference hosted by the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association, you won’t want to miss this great promotional opportunity!

International Dairy

By Neal Smith, Smyrna, TN arlier this year, my traveling partner Lynn Lee and I had the opportunity to travel to Tatura, Victoria, Australia, to represent U.S. Ayrshire in conjunction with USLGE at the International Dairy Week. Our purpose was to promote U.S. genetics and the upcoming World Ayrshire Conference. It was a great week meeting new friends, looking at good cows and experiencing good ice cream at IDW. As a matter of fact, I believe that Lynn experienced about $120 worth. As we got ready to return home, he said all he had spent any cash on was ice cream and then realized exactly how much he had eaten! But, all kidding aside, it was a great week.

U.S. genetics are being widely used “down under.” That was evident when the animals started parading through the ring and you started thumbing through the catalog and you saw sires like Burdette, Gibbs, Reality, Doublewhammy and Riggins. It became even more evident when a Covey-Palmyra O Ripkin daughter was named as Grand Champion, and Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette was named as Premier Sire of the IDW Ayrshire show. Here are a few photos of some of the champions and from our additional opportunities to travel through the country.

Jr. Champion - Added Entry in Class 5 (Heifers born 7/01/13 to 12/31/13) Sire: Palmyra Tri-Star Reality Reserve Jr. Champion – Boldview DreamA-Rilla (same class born 08/19/13) Sire: Nexus Dreamer

Sr. and Grand Champion – Cher-Bar Rippa Lasselle (Class 13: 6 Yr. & Over) Sire: Covey-Palmyra O Ripken Res Sr. and Res. Grand – Eastern View Modem Neenie (Class 13: 6 Yr. & Over) Sire: Lagace Modem

Int. Champion – Billabong Dreamer Bonny-C (Class 8: 2 ½ Yrs. In Milk) Sire: Nexus Dreamer; Res Int Champion – Encore Tri-Reality Keeley Scarlett (Class 9: 3 Yrs. In Milk) Sire: Palymra Tri-Star Reality These are some of the Burdette udders seen during the show.

Grand Champion Line-up Some photos of the USLGE booth where we greeted breeders of all breeds; however, we probably had more Ayrshire enthusiasts than anything else. We supplied them with a thumb drive that contained our Sire Summary, All-American results, a copy of our current Yearbook and other promotion materials that were gladly received by all. 22

Week ~ Australia

After the show was over, Lynn and I had the opportunity to travel to Gooloogong, NSW for some farm visits. The first stop was the farm of the Eagles Partnership and the home of John and Joy Eagle. The Eagles were very gracious opening up their home for Lynn and I to spend the night with them. And, what a nice herd! In fact, this is an interesting note: earlier in the week we had attended a meeting where they announced their national awards. The Eagles had been awarded the “Best Three Females” award. Well come to find out, two of the three animals that were used in that best three were results of embryos that they had purchased from our own Sunny-Acres Ayrshires during a previous IDW Sale. We were able to see those animals while there.

The next day we traveled to Cawdor, NSW to visit the Camberfield herd owned by Todd Biffin. We were hosted by Todd and Australian breeder Sam Gordon. The Biffins milk about 80 cows. Todd owned the cow that was first-place 4-Year-Old and Intermediate Champion at IDW.

After the visit with the Biffins we traveled on to Syndey. There Sam Gordon and his wife continued to host us with a nice evening on the water front. Should you ever get the opportunity to travel “down under”, don’t pass it up. As I said, great sites, great people and great cows!
