2016 World Ayrshire Conference By Becky Payne, Executive Director

T

he task of writing a summary for the World Ayrshire Conference to share with our membership might just be the most difficult one yet. I have never been so proud of our US Ayrshire breeders! How do I thank all of the people who supported this event in so many different ways? To those who contributed financially as donors, we owe you much gratitude. All were individually listed in the last Digest, so I won’t name you again now. Please know how appreciated you are. Your financial support enabled us to do some of the extras that made the conference unique and special. We thank you so much. The conference got off to a great start at the Big E and the Eastern States National Show. What a great event this was! The Ayrshire breeders who participated at the show set the energetic and positive tone for the entire conference. These amazing people somehow put together a social in the barn the night before the show where each farm exhibit welcomed our guests with drinks and snacks (Mind you, they were all showing early the next morning.) I knew from that moment on, it was going to be a huge success. The show itself had great quality, and we appreciate all the effort that went into that. The farm visits were unbelievable, from the first to the last! You would not believe the effort our breeders put forward and the hospitality extended to each of our guests. I can’t begin to tell you how much our visitors enjoyed the unique attributes of each farm. They appreciated seeing the different genetics being used and the variety of management styles. When the committee worked on the schedule, the goal was to make each stop unique, and this goal was surely met. Attendees routinely commented throughout the conference how much they enjoyed the diversity presented to them. This surely would not be possible on a routine tourist type of excursion. Since there is no way to possibly give justice to these breeders for their effort, I will simply say thank you. I sincerely hope you enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed you. Many of you attended events as the traveling tour went through your home area. You have no idea how much your support was welcomed. The host families at each farm appreciated your backing, and the attendees enjoyed your company. We thank you for taking that time to join us. It’s almost impossible to put into words how much gratitude and appreciation I have for the breeders, exhibitors, volunteers and management

at the World Dairy Expo. The quality of cattle that were exhibited was awesome, and the attention to every last detail was fantastic. Many of you went to great efforts to make our guests feel welcome; making this an experience they will never forget. World Dairy Expo as the grand finale of the conference was magnificent. There is nothing like it, and it was fun to experience it with our guests. To all of our international friends who put their trust in us to attend the conference, I say thanks. You were such a diverse and awesome group. Where in the world, but for Ayrshire people, can you take such a variety of people, throw them together for three weeks and then miss them like you lost a family member when they leave. I thoroughly loved making a connection with each person who came for the conference. It was very inspiring. We are blessed right now with a lot of talent around the world in our delegates and employees from each country. It’s a great motivator for all of us to keep fighting for the Ayrshire to prosper. There is great work to be done! The business of the World Ayrshire Federation was tended to as well during the meetings held in the Wisconsin Dells. Delegates from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Finland, Kenya, New Zealand, Sweden, South Africa, United Kingdom and the USA were in attendance. Our own Mary Creek, Palmyra Ayrshires, presided throughout the conference as the World Ayrshire Federation President. She did a first-class job, and we thank her for representing us so well. There was some deep and divided discussion on what is accepted by all countries as official Ayrshire genetics. As you know, the US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association made a policy many years ago to identify the percentage of purebred Ayrshire genetics in our pedigrees. The discussion was centered on some ancestral genetics and whether or not they should be labeled as Ayrshire. A motion was made by Ayrshire Canada “That the World Ayrshire Federation accept as policy that the Ayrshire breed includes animals descended from original Finnish Ayrshire, original Swedish Red breed, original Norwegian Red breed (prior to 1980), old English Shorthorn and old Swedish Shorthorn, in determining Ayrshire parentage.” After considerable debate, the motion passed. The US delegates did not vote in favor of this Cont. on pg. 23

Eastern States For Reserve Senior Champion, Judge Fitzsimmons selected a cow “with lots of balance.” The honor went to his winning Four-Year-Old, Vieux Village C Pink. Pink is an EX-93 Charleston daughter out of a VG-88 Blackaddar BB Kellogg. The Total Performance winner and winner of the 100,000 Pound class was Legacy Lane Sam’s Bloom. Scored EX-93 2E for Beverly Donovan of Benton, Maine, Bloom has a current lifetime in four lactations of 111,444M 5.3% 5,980F 3.2% 3,616P, and was the 2014 National Ayrshire Association’s Total Performance Winner.

T

he Eastern States National Ayrshire Show was the first stop for the World Ayrshire Conference and the folks of New England put on a great event and show. There were 140 head exhibited. On the beautiful fall day of September 22, in West Springfield, Massachusetts, this year’s judge for the Big E’s 100th Centennial year was Robert Fitzsimmons of East Montpelier, Vermont. Selected as the Junior Champion heifer was the tall, long, balanced first-place Winter Calf, Vieux Village Predator Gold. Exhibited by the Foleys of Piopolis, Quebec, Canada, the Forever Schoon Predator-ET daughter is out of an EX-92 2E Charleston dam, backed by an EX-91 3E Kellogg. The Reserve Junior Champion honors went to the winning Summer Yearling, Blue-Spruce Prime Little B-ET, for Blue Spruce Farm of Bridport, Vermont. This long, stylish and tall De La Plaine Prime daughter is out of a cow who has graced the show ring shavings as well. She is Blue-Spruce Baltimore 9822 EX-93, a nominated All-American Spring Yearling and the Reserve Intermediate Champion cow at this show in 2014. She has records to 25,881M. This was the first year that a Futurity was held at the Eastern States National. A tremendous group of 16 two-year-olds graced the shavings for an exciting class that will surely be the first of many more. Winning the Futurity and then the JuniorTwo-Year-Old class was Ridale Nemo Serenity-ET for Ridale Genetics of Cummington, Massachusetts. From a cow family that is quite familiar with the show ring, this VG-88 young cow, with an 89-point mammary, is the daughter of Geminaecho Showstar Shirley and sired by Beau Lac Nemo.

A special young cow, Scapeland DB Sicily, was crowned with the Intermediate Champion title. Certainly no stranger to the show ring the Unanimous All-American Spring Calf, All-American Spring Yearling nominee and Reserve Jr. All-American Junior Two-YearOld, she is again creating her mark. Sicily won the Junior Three-Year-Old class and continued on to win Best Bred and Owned of the show, Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion honors. Owned by Dacey Anechiarico or Whiting, Vermont, the EX-91 Dbl Barrel daughter is out of a Bendig. For Reserve Intermediate Champion, Judge Fitzsimmons selected Vieux Village C Gem, owned by Megan Caruso of Gorham, Maine. The Charleston daughter is scored Excellent and won the Sr. Three-Year-Old class. Bred by the Foley family of Quebec, Gem is out of a VG-88 Kellogg. Hardy Farm Rio Verify was the cow selected for Senior Champion of the show for Ryan and Marjorie Rida of Ridale Genetics. Recently scored EX-94, she is the daughter of three Very Good and Excellent dams and was bred by Marjorie’s family’s farm. She is sired by Morning Dew BBK Rio, a homebred bull by the Ridas that goes back three generations to Hawksfield Bronara, EX-94 4E with lifetime production of 352,302 4.3% 15,02F 3.4% 11,824P. Judge Fitzsimmon’s comments during the Grand Champion selection of the show were: “She’s an incredible cow, just a long frame, long body, beautiful, beautiful udder under her. She’s a cow that moves very well, and the kind of cow that can get along in any kind of environment.” Judging by the cheers and the crowd’s applause, she was a favorite in the stands as well. She was also given Best Udder of the Show.

I

t was a record-setting exhibition of Ayrshires at this year’s International Show in Madison, Wisconsin, on October 6 and 7. The show itself was the finale of the threeweek World Ayrshire Federation Conference. Judge Molly Sloan and Associate Judge Blair Weeks placed the multitude of beautiful Ayrshires before an appreciative international crowd. After the judges placed 154 heifers, their first- and second-place animals re-entered the ring to vie for Junior Champion honors. Pulled out for contention were the Winter Calf and Summer Yearling, as well as the first- and second-place Spring Yearlings. Judge Sloan talked about the quality heifers she and her associate had seen that afternoon. “We’ve pulled out four of our heifers that are extremely stylish, extremely correct on their feet and legs, heifers that have so much balance on their dairy strength and frame.” She then went out and tapped the first-place Spring Yearling for Junior Champion honors, the Winter Calf for Reserve Champion honors and then the Summer Yearling for Honorable Mention. Judge Sloan returned to the mic after her selections. “For Junior Champion we are going to go with the Spring Yearling. She’s a heifer that was really just lights-out when she came in the ring. We love the style of this heifer; we love the dairyness of this heifer. She is so balanced and blending of her parts and deserving of the Junior Champion.” GVP Dreamer Gabriella-ET, owned by Palmyra Farms, Hagerstown, Maryland and David

and Linda Hanson, Goodridge, Minnesota, was the winner of the Junior Champion honor. She is a Nexus Dreamer out of an 89-point Berkley with 19,340M 4.3% 829F 3.0% 570P at 2-02 305D. The next dam is an Excellent Poker with over 24,700M and an All-American nominee. The Reserve Champion rosette was won by the first-place Winter Calf, Woodman-Farm Lochinvar Adele exhibited by Stephen and Tyler Woodman of Claremont, New Hampshire. She is a Lochinvar out of a 91-point Shady Walnut Conn. Honorable Mention honors went to Sco-Lo Dream Mistress-ET owned by Leslie and Linda Bruchey of Westminster, Maryland. The Unanimous All-American and Junior All-American Winter Calf returned to the winner’s circle again. She is a Dreamer out of an 88-point Lotto with over 25,000M. The following day, 92 young cows paraded before Judge Sloan and Weeks prior to the selection of Intermediate Champion of the show. Pulled out for contention of champion honors were the Junior Two-Year-Old, Senior Two-Year-Old, Junior Three-Year-Old and Senior Three-Year-Old cows. Tapped for Intermediate Champion was the Senior TwoYear-Old followed by Senior Three and Junior Three-Year-Olds. “For Intermediate Champion we are going to go with that Senior Two-Year-Old Cow. When you get her out here she has so much bloom to rear udder, height to udder and width – and when you get her out here she’s the longest cow.” This marked another win for Palmyra Farms with Palmyra Berkely P Ruth-ET owned in

partnership with Julie and Larry Schirm of Ohio. The first-place Senior Two-Year-Old is a two-time All-American nominated 88-point Berkely daughter with 18,270M 4.5% 814F 3.1% 565P at 2-00 in 264D. She is backed by two Excellent dams. Mowry’s Popo Mistletoe, the first-place Senior Three-Year-Old and Reserve Intermediate Champion is an 84-point Mowry’s Poker Popo-ET owned by Glamour View Farm of Walkersville, Maryland. She is backed by an EX-91-2E dam. Honorable Mention honors went to Scapeland DB Sicily, the 89-point Junior Three-Year-Old owned by Dacey Anechiarico of Whiting, Vermont. Sicily is a Family-Af-Ayr Rem Dbl Barrel out of a Bendig. Sixty cows in four senior classes graced the colored shavings before the naming of the Senior and Grand Champions. Judge Sloan gave an offering of thanks to the World Dairy Expo staff, Ayrshire breeders and organization staff, her associate judge and family. She then tapped her Senior Champions for Grand and Reserve of the show, the Aged cow and FourYear-Old cow followed by the Intermediate Champion for Honorable Mention Champion of the show. “For Grand champion of the show we are going with the Aged Cow. When she walked in the ring we fell in love with her. We love the dairyness, we love the openness and the beautiful udder on her. She is a modern cow that fits the breed and fits the dairyness that we think the breed is going for.” Taking home the Grand Champion banner of the International Show in front of an enthusiastic crowd was Margot Patagonie,

motion, mostly because we felt that we didn’t have enough time to consider the facts, how it would affect our pedigree system, and we wanted discussion with our board of directors. Each country has its own rules and regulations, so our Board of Directors will have great discussion on this to determine if it will have any impact within our own country. The Federation body also asked the Swedish Red members to modify their name to include the word Ayrshire. In further voting, the delegates passed a motion for the Federation secretarial duties to transfer from Ayrshire Canada to the UK Ayrshire Society effective January 1, 2017. The new executive committee was appointed to include: President Greg Edmonds, Australia; Vice President Gordon Glentworth, New Zealand; Director at Large Robert Albertson, Sweden; Past President Mary Creek, USA; and Secretary Duncan Hunter, UK. Each country made a presentation where we shared current information from our Associations, such as production leaders, policies, genetic data, and much more relating to any other important topics from our respective countries. Two very good presentations were made that encouraged active participation from those in attendance. Larry Schirm from ABS gave an interesting talk on genetic improvement. David Kendall from ST Genetics discussed facing the realities in using technology to advance the breed. Portions of all of the presentations are available online at the World Ayrshire Federation website.

Last but certainly not least, we need to acknowledge the core planning committee for their efforts. They went into this with a large task at a time when the dairy economy around the world was suffering, the exchange rate for the US dollar was not in our favor, and knowing that we would have to disappoint some of our own breeders because the tour could not possibly go everywhere. Many thanks to our chairs, Steve and Deb McDonald, World Federation President Mary Creek, Tom Fenton, Donna Mertz, Lynn Lee, Neal Smith and our ABA President and First Lady, Jim and Sharon Tentinger. Hopefully all who wanted to find a way to participate in some way did so. If you didn’t, please take time to visit dairyagendatoday.com. Their staff did a great job following us on this journey with photos and news coverage. For those who got a taste of the international Ayrshire culture and want more, make plans to attend the 2020 World Ayrshire Conference in Australia. I can’t imagine a nicer break from January winter weather than to be with fellow Ayrshire breeders in the beautiful, warm climate of Australia.

Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Public Statement “After an open admission of discrepancies, action was taken against Mike Dilly of Montour, IA and Patty Dilly of Tama, IA for violation of the ABA Bylaws and sanctions were imposed.”
